Smart Home in GX
Smart Home in Opera GX
Does your browser live in a bubble? Opera GX’s Smart Home feature links your browser to your real-world setup. Control lights, react to meetings, and trigger automations as you please.
Control your home with Opera GX.
What is the Smart Home feature in Opera GX?
Smart Home in Opera GX lets your browser connect to your smart home system using MQTT. Actions in your browser (like opening a meeting, streaming a video, or closing a tab) can trigger real-world automations such as muting speakers, changing lights, or activating scenes. It also works the other way around: smart devices can trigger browser actions (like muting audio, changing tabs, or closing private windows).
Which smart-home systems does Opera GX support?
Opera GX works with any smart home platform that supports MQTT. This includes popular systems like Home Assistant, Homebridge, and Node-RED, along with many custom or self-hosted setups.
How do I enable Smart Home support in Opera GX?
Open Settings (Alt+P), search for Smart Home, and enter your MQTT broker details. Once connected, you can install the Opera GX Smart Home extension directly from the settings panel. Your browser will then appear automatically as a device in supported platforms like Home Assistant.
Does connecting my browser to my smart home compromise privacy or security?
No. Opera GX does not control your MQTT broker or connection, and all broker settings stay under your control. The browser only sends and receives messages through the broker you configure. You can also isolate devices using custom topic prefixes for extra separation.
Is the Smart Home extension open-source?
Yes. The Smart Home extension and its full documentation are open-source and available on GitHub. The official Opera GX Smart Home extension uses some private browser APIs, so clones cannot be publicly released, but it can still be extended and tested locally.
Can I use the Smart Home feature with existing browser extensions or settings?
Absolutely. Smart Home works alongside all your existing GX settings, mods, and extensions. It does not interfere with how the browser already works. It only adds the ability to send and receive automation signals through MQTT.
