Debunking Misinformation About Opera GX
No. Opera GX is a browser. Opera GX collects a minimal amount of data and only if you agree to it. With the data we collect, it’s not possible to identify any individual in any practical way. We only use it to show you content you’re interested in, and advertising so we can keep feeding our devs in Poland.
Opera GX is safe to download, but always make sure you’re downloading Opera GX from our official website – opera.com/gx – as scammers often disguise malware as well-known products to trick users into downloading and installing it.
No. First of all, Opera is headquartered in Norway – not China – so it operates under Norwegian law. Opera GX itself is developed in Poland, which is in the European Union. As a European company, we are GDPR-compliant, which means that we’re governed by one of the strictest data protection laws out there.
Secondly, in 2018, Opera was listed on NASDAQ and became a publicly listed company. That means we have thousands of shareholders/owners around the world. As a publicly listed company, anyone – even you* – can buy shares and “own” part of Opera. So neither China nor any other country owns Opera and its products. Our largest shareholder is Kunlun Tech, a company listed on the Shenzhen stock exchange. But like all other shareholders, it is not part of the Opera Group of companies and it does not have access to user data or servers.

No, Opera does not sell your data. Opera also does not collect your browsing history. If you consent to it, we collect website categories – not specific URLs, but broad topics like “News” and “E-commerce” – so that the ads you see won’t have you reaching for the “x” button right away. And if you choose to opt out, we don’t even collect that.
Opera only collects minimal data to improve our browsers, as well as personalize content and advertising if you consent. It is not sold. We can't use this data to find out who you are, and to Opera, our users are essentially anonymous. Simply put, we don't know who you are, and we don't want to. You can toggle data collection off during or after installation. Read our Privacy Statement for full details.
No. Opera's free VPN is a strictly no-log VPN that never logs your data, and encrypts your connection within the browser with state-of-the-art AES-256 encryption. Our VPN has been independently audited by Deloitte for its no-log policy and by Cure53 for security. You can also read our Transparency Report for details about how we deal with data requests from law enforcement authorities.
Like most other free software, Opera makes money by selling ad placements to other companies. Users can disable such promotional placements inside the settings. In addition, search engines such as Google pay browser companies – not just Opera – to be the default search engine. For more information, check out our blog post on how we monetize or look at our Quarterly Financial Statements.
As a publicly listed company, we are required by law to disclose our activities every three months. These disclosures are open to the public and available for anyone to read (and no, we can’t lie in these disclosures – we’d be in a world of legal and financial hurt if we did).
You can also look for independent, third-party verification. For example, our VPN has been audited by world-class auditor Deloitte for its no-log policy, and by well-known German cybersecurity firm Cure 53 for its security. Other independent audits include Opera for Android’s security audit by US-based security firm Leviathan.
