Today, we want to share with you another big thing that you will first see in the developer channel for Opera for computers.

We are the first major browser maker to integrate an unlimited and free VPN or virtual private network. Now, you don’t have to download VPN extensions or pay for VPN subscriptions to access blocked websites and to shield your browsing when on public Wi-Fi.

VPN settings

Why we are adding free VPN in Opera

Bringing this important privacy improvement marks another step in building a browser that matches up to people’s expectations in 2016. When you think about it, many popular options offered by desktop browsers today were invented (quite frequently by Opera) many years ago. The innovation energy in the industry has been recently so focused on mobile, even if the desktop is still thriving.

In January, we were reviewing our product plans, and we realized that people need new features in order to browse the web efficiently in 2016. It also became apparent to us that what people need are not the same features that were relevant for their browsers ten years ago. This is why we today have more engineers than ever before working on new features for our desktop browser.

So far we have the native ad blocker. And, we’re introducing another major feature in just a matter of a few weeks; a native, unlimited and free VPN client, right inside your browser!

VPN enabled popup

Enhanced privacy online with Opera’s free VPN

According to Global Web Index*, more than half a billion people (24% of the world’s internet population) have tried or are currently using VPN services. According to the research, the primary reasons for people to use a VPN are:

– To access better entertainment content (38%)
– To keep anonymity while browsing (30%)
– To access restricted networks and sites in my country (28%)
– To access restricted sites at work (27%)
– To communicate with friends/family abroad (24%)
– To access restricted news websites in my country (22%)

According to the research, young people are leading the way when it comes to VPN usage, with almost one third of people between 16-34 having used a VPN.

Better than traditional VPNs

Until now, most VPN services and proxy servers have been limited and based on a paid subscription. With a free, unlimited, native VPN that just works out-of-the-box and doesn’t require any subscription, Opera wants to make VPNs available to everyone.

That’s why Opera’s built-in free VPN feature is easy to use. To activate it, Mac users just need to click the Opera menu, select “Preferences” and toggle the feature VPN on, while Windows and Linux users need to go to the “Privacy and Security” section in “Settings” and enable VPN there. A button will appear in the browser address field, from which the user can see and change location (more locations will appear later), check whether their IP is exposed and review statistics for their data used. It’s free and unlimited to use, yet it offers several must-have options available in paid VPNs, such as:

  • Hide your IP address – Opera will replace your IP address with a virtual IP address, so it’s harder for sites to track your location and identify your computer. This means you can browse the web more privately.
  • Unblocking of firewalls and websites – Many schools and workplaces block video-streaming sites, social networks and other services. By using a VPN you can access your favorite content, no matter where you are.
  • Public Wi-Fi security – When you’re surfing the web on public Wi-Fi, intruders can easily sniff data. By using a VPN, you can improve the security of your personal information.

Download Opera 38 developer and give the free, unlimited VPN a try. BTW: beyond our native ad blocker and VPN, you can expect more exciting features to come very soon.

Other changes

Video pop out

This feature has been extensively described here. It is now present in developer, too. Enjoy!

Add your own photo as theme

Some time ago, we introduced the “Create your theme” option in the theme manager. It turned out, though, that the option was not visible enough for users. Now just go to Customize startpage and click ‘+’ button and use your own photos to create a theme.

Extension button visible on the Speed Dial side panel

All extension users will have the extension manager always handy. The extension icon is visible on side panel on the left side of the Speed Dial page.

Support for adding a personal ad blocker list

Our ad blocker now contains support for adding your own block lists. To add your own custom list file, head to Settings and click the ‘Custom Block Lists’ button in the ad-blocking section (note that ‘Show advanced settings’ from the ‘Browser’ panel must be enabled to see the button).
The lists have to be in EasyList-style format, and you can use existing lists such as the EasyList affiliate lists to ensure you get to block all that you want. As a reminder, Opera itself provides a block list based on the publicly available EasyList and EasyPrivacy.

Speed Dial improvements

Did you ever remove your speed dial accidentally? Now you won’t. You’ll notice three little dots on hover in place where close button used to be. It has the same content as context menu, so you can open, edit or remove speed dial.

  • Matej Szendi

    Will be x64 build available?

    • BK

      Not today.

      • RafaellaG

        Tomorrow?
Or do we (again) have to wait for the next developer build?

    • nxootsre

. dont use Opera. Opera is sending every url to sitecheck2.opera.com Its spy, Opera has nothing to do with users url being sent to Opera servers without their permission

      • Marcin Mitek

I already removed two of your comments. Please don’t make me ban you.

  • Flavoi

Oh my gosh. This is what’s called innovation. Thanks guys, keep up the good work!

  • Kurt Zon

    Nice surprise!!

  • Piotrooo

    Wow! Brilliant!

  • Zero Kiryu

That’s a really nice surprise, thanks! BTW, how can I add my own custom block list from that Easylist website? I can’t find any download links in there

    • Marcin Mitek

Hmm, they are in form of .txt files, http://adblocklist.org/adblock-pxf-polish.txt this is the one for Poland for example.

Here is the German one: https://easylist-downloads.adblockplus.org/easylistgermany.txt

There is plenty of them available in the Internet, do as Arjan said, save them and load from Opera settings.

      • RafaellaG

Is the content of the custom block lists stored somewhere (and where) after adding them to Opera or are they loaded every time from the specified locations?

        Better (as noted somewhere above):
“I think custom adblock lists should be loadable from an URL”

    • Arjan van Leeuwen

Right-click the ‘view X list’ link and choose ‘Save linked content as…’.

  • bviktor

I hope you do realize this is quite ironic for a company owned by the Chinese. Or did that deal go south? I haven’t heard anything since the “we’re considering it” part.

    • anonym

yeah, i thought the same (chinese or not, its a company that somehow needs to make money). therefore i still trust my good old-fashioned DFN vpn more than anything else.

    • Our main goal is to deliver value to our users. If we see that more and more people want VPN, but they have troubles in set it up, we make it free and easy to run.

  • shadow118

This is awesome! Now I’ll be able to watch FIA WRX 2016 livestreams on youtube 😀

  • helsten2

    Great idea!
    Two comments:
When I click on the VPN icon the IP address is always blank. Bug?
There are only 3 virtual locations available (CAN, USA, GER). How can I include my home country?

    • Aneta Reluga

      As the note says:
“A button will appear in the browser address field, from which the user can see and change location (more locations will appear later)”

      • helsten2

        Perfect. Thanks

    • Kornelia

It’s a developer stream. We’ve working on this.

      • sxz

When I click on the VPN icon the virtual locations is always blank. 🙁

  • shane

+1 for the speed dial improvements. So sick of accidentally deleting speed dials especially when using a touch screen. Very welcome improvement, thanks.

    • Aneta Reluga

This was *exactly* the reason why we decided to introduce this change. Thank you so much for confirmation the change is OK for you 🙂

    • Kornelia

It’s nice to hear that someone actually survived to the end of blog post 🙂

  • x a

The problem is, how to integrate/”alternate” internal SurfEasy with SwitchyOmega Proxy manager, eg…

  • Marcus

Have used Google Chrome since a very long time…
But recently I’ve looked at other browsers and i gave Opera a try (using beta) because it is based on chromium it is similar to Chrome, and so far i think it is amazing and all the development & features is excellent.

Keep up the good work & looking forward to test the native VPN in Beta!

  • iYuzver

    It is excellent!
The number of the available countries will grow?

    • BK

      yes, very soon 🙂

  • iPristy

Cool, i can now drop Firefox and ZenMate.

  • Sergey Ivanov

Men Make a list of sites on which will be included VPN

  • Cat

Free VPN is awesome, but could you add synchronization and import of custom search engines? I really miss this feature.

    • Aneta Reluga

      Thanks for the suggestion.

  • kapsi

Nice. I think custom adblock lists should be loadable from an URL, not only from a local file.
Also after adding this, all pages stopped loading:
    https://raw.githubusercontent.com/MajkiIT/polish-ads-filter/master/polish-adblock-filters/adblock.txt

    In console there’s this error:
filter_content.js:52 Uncaught HierarchyRequestError: Failed to execute ‘createShadowRoot’ on ‘Element’: Author-created shadow roots are disabled for this element.

    • Druszlak

“I think custom adblock lists should be loadable from an URL(…)”

My thought exactly. Current implementation force us to load a new list every time the list will be updated.

      • Aneta Reluga

Thanks guys. I passed your suggestions to the responsible team.

    • Kornelia

By allowing only local files, we make sure that it’s the user’s responsibility to see that content. Of course users are free to update the file themselves (with a script if they want to) to automate the process.

      • Sidney Guioy

Providing an add-on with this feature, would be possible ?
I’m asking for both if opera could provide said add-on ( safer so no other addons would be able to change that list )
And if it’s technically possible to do/ allow it.

  • ga_pechorin

good improvements in speed dial, i agree at everything.

you havent mentioned it, but the “get more themes” link in the context menu and in the right panel is a great idea, i was tempted to ask for it in the previous version (it was pretty unaccesible then) but now you have do it for yourself 🙂

i also wanted the manage extensions button, but i thought right click on the address bar wasnt so bad. i particulary love this side bar, it was one of my favourites features of opera 12 and i miss it. i am secretely hoping you will add it to any page, not only speed dial.

    • Aneta Reluga

Thank you for your insights! As you can see, big things happen, but smaller things are going to happen as well, so every suggestion is welcome and stored for review. 🙂

  • ThanhLiem

    Great!
Looking forward to seeing what you will bring to us

  • ga_pechorin

oh, i almost forgot, there is a kind of bug with proxys.

i use opera from work (too) and here everything come through a proxy. when you open a new page, the pop up shows up asking for credentials and it is ok, it remains, but when you open opera from a previous session, the pop up appears when it tries to reload the page but one second later it goes away. i have to reload a page for the pop up coming again. it is a little bit annoying.

    • ThanhLiem

I’m not sure i understand all you said but I think it would be ok if you try to go to Setting and setup cookie permission into “keep local data only until i quit my browser”. If ok, browser will delete all cookie in your machine when you close Opera and website will ask for credentials when you reload the page.

  • catup

Are you sure Qihoo will hold Opera soon after your guys launched the great VPN feature?

  • Druszlak

Native adblock, VPN… Opera is gonna be the most hated browser by the media concerns, intelligence agencies and illuminati ofc. ^^

    • SteveC

      Nah, it doesn’t even work.

      • 1337

It works great. Be sure to follow instruction. Submit a bug report if it persist.
Also be aware that this is a dev beta, only for testing purpose, not consumers.

  • iVarun

The VPN is still leaking real IP through the well known WebRTC issue.

    Just test here
    https://www.privacytools.io/webrtc.html
    https://ipleak.net/

As this post says itself about the reasons for having a VPN, 2nd is anonymity.
Thus one can’t have real IP’s leaking like that.

Now VPN extensions don’t solve this either but since this inbuilt VPN solution is being done by Opera at a browser level why not deal with this Leaking issue as well, since its said the disabling WebRTC helps in this regard but why not do that automatically when we turn on the VPN, instead of resorting to turning on and off manually/using some script/extension and so on.

    • Aneta Reluga

Indeed. This feature is under heavy development – note: it is a developer stream. You can expect fixes and improvements in the upcoming updates. Thanks for spotting it, by the way 🙂

    • L33t4opera

Hi @clarrisani:disqus, follow the below steps, and see if it helps in your case:
      1. Open opera:about, and copy the path to the profile, close the Opera,
      2. Open your file explorer, and navigate to the profile folder, make a copy of the Preferences file (if you make a mistake, you can overwrite the original file with a copy),
      3. Open the Preferences file in your text editor, go to the end of the file, and after the second “}” from the end, add the below code:
      ,"webrtc":{"multiple_routes_enabled":false}
as a result of it, the merged code should looks like below:
      },"webrtc":{"multiple_routes_enabled":false}}
Save the changes, close the file, and relaunch the Opera 😉

      @disqus_6Vsuf9mjcD:disqus @YggrofAsgard:disqus @eredinbreac:disqus

  • Clarrisani

Having an issue with the VPN connection being very, very slow to the point it drops out.

  • Hewhowaits

A 7 day free trial is NOT FREE VPN.

    • Aneta Reluga

Could you please elaborate what you mean? Our implementation is totally unrestricted. Are you even sure you are using Opera? 😉

    • helsten2

Are you sure you are using the latest developer version – 38.0.2205.0 ?

  • andreloxas

My wish was that you also included a way to bypass the dns resolving mechanism in each OS, make the dns query go trough the vpn for user selected dns servers and hav a decent default, so we could include the dns servers we want to use and plus have more local security (lan, man) while surfing the web. People on my neighborhood pass close to me and whisper the sites I visit if I don’ t use a full vpn solution. It is boring and silly, but stressfull at times, when it comes to online banking, e-mail and online shopping.

  • Oskar

Tried the VPN feature real quick and it seem to work super smooth. Well done! I love how it plays well with my regular VPN and I can get double security that way!
Maybe a feature where you could chose not to use it on some tabs?
Most important is the WebRTC leakage though, please fix it, it seems to be one of the bigger security threats on any chromium browser.

On another note, haven’t tried it yet but don’t see the reason to use video pop out, maybe you could explain it in a future post?

I’m back to Opera now after leaving to Chrome for about a year (still checked the developer version regularly). Been using Opera for 10+ years before that. Hopefully Opera keeps improving and not frustrating me. What I notice right away is that changing language for spell check stills requires you to click on each paragraph after changing language, this could be improved.

  • Yggr of Asgard

VPN feature (beside the WebRTC) bug is great, but for some reason I can not get it to run in “Private Window”.

  • Ankur Yadav

I can not find the vpn in my browser. I am on build 38.0.2205.0 developer version still its not available
    EDIT: Got it.

    • Aneta Reluga

Please go to Settings > Privacy &security section. The VPN section is right under “Privacy”.

  • Does not seem to be working for me… stuck at “connecting”, no matter what. Any advice?

Also, it’d be great if it could be switched on and off on a per-tab basis; I very often need a VPN connection just for a single site, no need to make it program-wide!

    • Kornelia

      What’s your operating system?

      • Win7Prox64. Tried first enabling my own VPN, too, but that doesn’t seem to help.

        • Kornelia

Are you sure your ‘own’ VPN is disabled? It might causes problems..

          • Aneta Reluga

Also, could you please try temporarily disabling your antivirus and try again? Thanks.

          • Unfortunately I can’t, it’s a company PC…

          • Aneta Reluga

I see. So please tell us what antivirus is it? As the VPN is working OK here, we have to try to identify otherwise why it is not working for you, and just maybe it is the cause. Thanks.

          • It’s Trend Micro; but, I asked our kind sysadm to disable it for me and he did – I still can’t connect to the VPN in Opera. Still stuck at “connecting”.

          • Marcus

i guess your company client / PC is part of a domain and furthermore that often involve policies that could be related to network & firewall rules etc, especially if you are connected to your company’s wired / wireless network?

          • Well, not much use then. How come every other VPN solution I’ve tried (including browser extensions like ZEN) work just fine…

          • Just noticed something – in the VPN menu, the “Virtual Location” drop-down menu is empty. Could there be something wrong with my Opera setup?

          • Yup, I’ve exited it and my real IP address is reported correctly.

  • Cyrris

Thanks for the speed dial close button improvements. My pet peeve has finally been shown the door =)

    • Aneta Reluga

      You’re welcome 8)

  • Johny

I’m having problems to use it through a proxy.
We can only send traffic from proxy and directed to 80 and 443 ports.
It keeps in connecting, but never ends connecting.
Is it possible to use the proxy settings and connect using the 443 port?

    • Kornelia

You cannot use Opera VPN and custom proxy at the same time.

      • Johny

Do you plan to change it in the future?
Otherwise users within corps that block all the traffic except for proxy traffic can’t use it 🙁

        • Kornelia

I don’t think it’s something we can solve anytime soon.

      • Oh wow. If Johnny’s interpretation is correct then it’s really a half-baked solution… Every other VPN product I’ve works just fine at work, so why can’t Opera?

  • pokemiu

    Nice release. Thank you.
    The surprises keep coming.
I hope it won’t be at the cost of the performance (ram/cpu usage).
    That’s why I use Opera.

    • I agree. Really nice release, all the new features are useful and nice!

    • Aneta Reluga

Be ready for more nice surprises then. 🙂

      • Gloriam

        Looking forward to it!

  • taneli

Well, apparently my Youtube re-reloading bug seems to be gone, that’s nice.
Is there a way to disable the video popup in the settings? Or do i need to do it via flags?

    • Marcin Mitek

There is an exception list for video popup coming, it should be available in the next developer release.

      edit: and beta 🙂

      • taneli

        Okay, thank you.

  • iPristy

Can’t edit speed dial thumbnails if there is just one line of it, it’s out of reach.

Is this in every Opera, i don’t know or is it just limitation?

    • Kornelia

What do you mean by ‘it’s out of reach’? You can now edit using menu button visible on every SD entry.

    • Aneta Reluga

      Thanks, reporting.

      • iPristy

No thank you, well this i called service, it’s not like old Opera.

    • RafaellaG

It’s in every Opera beta and developer build.
Do have only one line of speed dial thumbnails myself.

      • Aneta Reluga

Ok, I must admit I was adamant that the old bug was fixed and re-introduced with the context menu. Well, one way or another it got a load of attention now. Thanks.

        • iPristy

It’s also in O36 Stable. I guess nobody try that before.

  • Opera, you are saying goodbye to China, when the time you add native vpn within your browser.

    • Кostadin

Well. it could be a big ‘Hello’. I think there are enough ways to download a software you want to use 🙂

      • Ariane Lu

        We love Opera.

But if Opera provide VPN without limit in China, Opera’s website will be blocked in China, By Government , We will unable to download or get any new version of Opera in China.

        • Sidney Guioy

They could make a special version for user downloading from china, with vpn service not available. So it’s solve the government problem, and someone who want that feature can use a vpn to download opera with vpn integrated 🙂

        • Cesar Napoleon

they’re doomed to fail at blocking things from people who want them by a community raised from the first years of mankind : hackers.

          • Ariane Lu

Something already went to bad, our international bandwidth is slowing down. with packet loss, large response time. And more site in black list.

A lot of developer will use proxy , like me. or just stop learning new technology, disconnect from the world.

            We hate firewall.

        • Sosialisten

A Chinese company is buying opera anyway, so the browser will soon be Chinese government spyware.

  • This is excellent news!

  • qwerty

How about anonymous torrent downloads? Opera still has a torrent client, right?

  • oic

    Theme from menu is missing?

    • Kornelia

Yes, but it’s still available in three different places: 1. Settings – Basic, context menu on speed dial page and under Customize start page.

      • oic

I don’t like the new changes. You basically merged downloaded themes and themes online into one sliding window. If I have lots of animated themes, its a pain to search thru it all. Plus I don’t know which theme is located on my hard drive and which is online that require downloading

        • bwat47

If you go to opera:themes from the addressbar | my themes you should see just your list of locally installed themes.

It would be nice if there was an option for the main theme selector on the speed dial page to only show local themes though

          • RafaellaG

And the themes could be a little bigger
Don’t has be so big as in opera:themes ;P

      • RafaellaG

don’t forget the “opera:themes” in the address field^^

  • tarkus

Well, great news and an even greater browser! I wonder why anybody bother to use a browser other than Opera these days. Even I must try to assimilate the innovations you are bringing with every new version! Bug reporting will come later, for now let’s enjoy the software!

    • Kornelia

Thank you for a nice feedback! 🙂

  • DS2902

Take the opportunity to include individual sites . It will become the new killer feature for users in Russia .

    • Alex Wazovskiy

      Чую, скоро Роскомнадзор запретит Оперу)

      • DS2902

Да и не только оперу. Сидят там сцуки и думают, как бы все эти VPN и прокси запретить.

        • Russian Dance Music

Скоро у нас будет доступен только один сайт – сайт президента) Все остальное запретят))

          • RafaellaG

Could you – and the above users – please post your comments in English (or at least an additional translation in English). This is an English speaking community! Thanks!

Не могли бы вы – и вышеупомянутые пользователи – пожалуйста, оставьте свои комментарии на английском языке ( или по крайней мере дополнительный перевод на английском языке) . Это английская говорящая община ! Благодаря!

          • Alex Wazovskiy

It’s just a small russian branch of comments That new feature such important for us, so we couldn’t resist to discuss that. English readers doesn’t need to understand what is written here 🙂

Юху, я могу читать Лурк! =)

  • senja1

What about 64-bit version for Windows?

    • Aneta Reluga

      Apologies. Not today.

      • RafaellaG

Please don’t wait for the next developer build (again)

  • Mit Navn

When i enable VPN and try to open opera again it crash every time 🙁
    Version: 38.0.2205.0
    developer
    System: Windows 10 64-bit (WoW64)

    • Kornelia

It’s a know issue unfortunately, DNA-52714. Sorry for that.

  • drkrvn

How do you finance this service?

    • Kornelia

We are profitable company, we do have the money.

      • Sidney Guioy

I was going to ask the same question. Even if a agree this is an awesome feature, question of how much it cost is still in my head .
Internet has taught us to be careful of free services.

i ( but i’m not as aware as you guys of every details of the company/market ) would have included free vpn with limited bandwidth and allowed for users to pay/( watch ads like in opera max/surf easy) a bit to get more bandwidth )

Anyway, this announcement gave you even more media coverage than Native ad blocker, that’s really cool for you guys ! 😀

As suggested an optional “white list” of site we want on vpn (we may not need all website going through vpn) would be a nice feature and save you guys some bandwidth in the same time

PS: i know some website looking for HTTPS and Privacy friendly ads services, that looks like something opera ads team could make available ( and in the same spirit of recent features you are providing on desktop )

sorry for long post, here a potato.. Oh wait, wrong community :p

        • Aneta Reluga

Well, we appreciate cute kittens too. 😉

The question is sort of philosophical though. Actually, how do you finance any freeware application, feature or service? Since it is not a matter of simple “do ut des” calculations, there are varying business models, and the market is constantly evolving. I can only address your understated doubts by saying that we are doing our job in both the legal and the ethical way, and ethics is a meaningful word.

          • Sidney Guioy

I know it was probably a rhetorical question but ..
Usually free things are financed through :
            -Partnaires
-Additional services ( paying users pay for free users )
            -Ads
            -User Info selling

*You have partners ( speed dial, search engines )
*You have ads ( vpn isn’t supposed to block ads ? or only intrusives one/ same model as native ad blocker )
*You keep our info safe ( ethical )

*Your aditional services, Surf Easy is still usefull for full computer / mobile vpn
i don’t use Opera Max (wp user) but if i recall, it allow free service against ads

So yeah i suppose that if you do that, you are still profitable, but providing free VPN for 60 million user ( and even more if you add that to opera for android ) look something so big in servers ( thanks surf easy) / costs ^^

That was my concern, but once again, i trust you guys ! ( since opera 8 😀 )

  • zor1

Yap! It was nice move from opera but I just wonder how you can do fast access to VPN services across all the majority of countries that is supposedly has most of the opera user base. Anyway its nice feature and mostly much more useful then what Firefox developers implements in their browser for the few decades in past. I mean these is for people not for developers mode or something like that. And I found Opera is more intuitive and convenient to use then Vivaldi for now. Just because Vivaldi have had to fix minor usability features in line with current Opera development to be more like transactional alternative to jump off from Opera, if you wish to switch off from of course. Well I found for myself that Opera brings up much nicer look and feeling then Chromium or Google chrome for me with a same performance or better plus visual quality of content represented on pages despite that I am personally wont like too much new icon but that’s not a big deal for me. The Firefox for me looks like combine of a lot of unneeded stuff which can be just separated to the developers edition as a basic user I don’t see any point of ability to enable developers mode in simple application like a browser which is supposed to do what it does not being monstrosity clone of Dream-viewer app. Still in any browser you have the ability to review page code and or see not shortened or cutoff URL’s if you need so. And these is a basic things that used supposedly by many people who would like to analyze the page or given URL for some sort of fishing attack if it is presented in there. Most modern browser has the fishing tracking feature which is why I suppose we don’t need the complete developers functionality in the firefox. ;D That being stupid but I thought it has impact on the browser performance anyway.

I am not in mood to test developers build but as far these changes are applied to mainstream stable versions I am 100% I try to install Opera once more to test new features.

    Thank you.

  • You cannot put the video in fullscreen:

    http://animeflv.net/ver/joker-game-3.html

    • Marcin Mitek

This is a known issue. Tracked as DNA-52342, embedded videos cannot be played properly in fullscreen. It is already fixed and should be available in next developer release.

  • Dark Magician

I’m glad you took my advice of integrating VPN.

  • Ryan Ringle

Having code signature issues with 1password on OSX El Cap.

    • Kornelia

What kind of issues? Could you send us screenshot?

      • Ryan Ringle

Basically when trying to fill login/password fields. There’s a popup stating “Cannot Fill Item in Opera Browser”. It goes on to state that the code signature could not be verified and filling and other features are disabled. I can send a screenshot, just tell me where you’d like it sent. Thanks!

        • Kornelia

Well, this extension is not officially supported by us, but you can send us a ticket using bugwizard. We’ll see what we can do about that.

  • And will Adobe Flash plugin connect also through VPN? 🙂

    • Eredin Breac

Nope. Your real IP still leaks through Flash and WebRTC 😛

    • BK

Plugin VPN support is being worked on.

  • sanchower

Oh, all right, Opera, I have deleted Chrome. I’m yours now.

  • sanchower

Please add a list of sites to turn on VPN automatically. I’m pretty sure VPN is not needed for every site.

    • Devocalypse

May I second that. I only need VPN for sites that implement geofencing. Having an inclusion list in the form of website > country would be best. Also are there any plans to add exit nodes in JAPAN?

  • dim supi

it shows me orange not blue when i use vpn and it doesn’t work

    • Sp Soul

Try to change country in the vpn settings. I changed usa to germany and icon become blue.

      • dim supi

i’m stuck at connecting ,so i can’t change anything

  • Alex Wazovskiy

Opera pleases me more and more with each version of. Keep it up!

  • Meshaan

I can’t download opera 🙁 ” This site can’t be reached ” yours site maybe is down 🙁

    • Kornelia
      • Meshaan

tried it and no luck, still i can’t download it

        • Aneta Reluga

Both the regular and offline packages download fails? Can you please try once in every while – perhaps there was a temporary link overload?

          • RafaellaG

            he downloaded it already.
you answered to the wrong (not latest) post from him.

          • Aneta Reluga

            Ahh, right. Thanks.

      • Meshaan

I download it. thx Kornelia 🙂

  • NoName

Would I be able to use my own VPN in the future?

  • Ariane Lu

Well, I think opera.com and sync service will disconnect in mainland of China as soon as possible , Because China government don’t allow any kind of proxy that can access website blocked by GFW, like Google, Facebook, Youtube, or other Adult website.

If any company provide VPN service , there server will blocked by GFW(Great Firewall), Once site add to blacklist, it’s almost impossible to get out from it.

We need internet private, but we also need stable service. If Opera continue this service without any change, we will unable to download, login, update Opera in China.

    • Zdenka Micka

It’ time to leave China. India is the future of Asia

      • Ariane Lu

Worry about bad English. India? Maybe in the future, but not now.

    • Sosialisten

That wont help. A Chinese company is buying Opera Software, so the browser will soon be Chinese government spyware.

      • Ariane Lu

Yeah. I know, but still hope Opera will keep it’s pure

        • Sosialisten

Well… if you really live in China, I think you know your government well enough to know that is not going to happen.

          • Ariane Lu

Yes, i know they will monitor all things we talk on chat tool, such as : QQ, no personal private.

Emm… Did you see any news about some popular browser called QQ Browser and Baidu Browser will upload user personal information to server at background without ask user?
Most user of China don’t care about this, but i care about it.

  • angourakis

    Hey,

Are you planning to expand this capability to Opera’s Browser Android version?

    Best Regards,
    Rafael

    • Aneta Reluga

There are plans to do so, there’s no ETA though.

      • xirit64

Is native ad-blocking for Opera 37 in the cards as well? Many Android browsers already have it. And night mode like in Opera Mini is needed asap too. I hate to say it but lately UC Browser stole my heart, please don’t stay so much behind!

        • Aneta Reluga

Yes, there are plans to implement both features in Android releases. Unfortunately, no ETA I know of, as well.

          • xirit64

That is nice to hear, thanks!

  • Herlan Ramos

I tried to watch Netflix and detected the VPN, its not working. Very Sad and dissapointing. I live in Costa Rica.

  • Wando Schneider

@disqus_YDJhOQt4lR:disqus was not kidding when he talked about kicking some asses 😛

  • Wando Schneider

@disqus_YDJhOQt4lR:disqus was not kidding when he talked about kicking some asses! 😛

    • RafaellaG

And it’s VERY useful stuff 🙂

      • Except tje VPN doesn’t work in a most popular scenario – in an office… 🙁

        • RafaellaG

It’s early in development. Maybe in the next build(s) it works there too.

          • Crossing fingers about that. I bet tons of people would find it useful…

          • RafaellaG

Hopefully it’s then a lot quicker too.
Loading sites with VPN on is very slow at the moment.
            (For me at least).

        • Cesar Napoleon

          tested and failed : uninstalled

  • Russian Dance Music

“Extension button visible on the Speed Dial side panel” … Ok))
download button would not prevent the sidebar)

  • PlonPlon

The full windows installer is NOT the latest version.
I’m on Windows XP and the regular installer does not work for me (can’t find some DLLs).
Where can I download the LATEST full installer for Opera Developper? I would like to test the VPN. Thanks!

    • Marcin Mitek

We are not supporting Windows XP and Vista starting with Opera version 37 and above. Only Opera 36 will receive security updates on those OSes.

      • PlonPlon

Thanks for the info. I’ll try it on Windows 10 then 🙂

        • Marcin Mitek

          No problem, go ahead 🙂

  • The VPN works for US netflix outside of us here. But not in HD, the resolution is terrible.

    • Marcin Mitek

There is a neat shortcut in Netflix (Ctrl+Shift+Alt+S) that allows you to override the stream settings and force the better quality than the detected.
Usually takes some time to buffer the better quality fragments, but sometimes it’s worth waiting.

      • Useful! Thanks!

        • Marcin Mitek

Also, replace Alt with Option on Mac 🙂

      • And it’s gone. Got the proxy screen of death in the middle of an episode of Torchwood.

        • RafaellaG

Torchwood is great (the original English first two seasons)! 🙂

  • Colin Michael

    NO VPN Option on Mac..

UPDATE>>> I’m Thick.. downloaded wrong one.

  • Dark Magician

But as far as I know Chromium still has WebRTC leak, and so does Opera. So when is it going to be addressed, it reveals your IP no matter the VPN?

    • Aneta Reluga

It is on the to-do list.

    • L33t4opera

Hi, you can try this, and see if it helps in your case 😉

  • Tousif Rahman

trying to use US netflix from Australia with the new VPN service but can not…still showing the error !! any idea how i can overcome this?

  • Valentin Radu

Wow, I left Opera quite a while back, when it lacked features because of switching to Chromium. Now, I saw on a web site the news about built-in VPN, and decided to give it a try – I don’t regret a single thing about it. The browser is great, and has incredible features that really make it stand out, video pop out being one of my favourites (ideal for wide screens, where content isn’t anyway taking up the entire width of the screen), besides built-in ad blocking, and the modern layout engine, and extensive customization options – oh, and on Windows 10, the browser looks awesome, just a bit hard to make out the tabs from the ‘Menu’ (Opera) button.

One small feature request: please add an option to set inactive title bar colour, or stick to the system provided one (which can be customized in Windows 10, even though Microsoft’s Settings app does not offer an option – Opera always uses the default gray colour, no matter if the default has been changed). Oh, and a darker theme for the navigation bar would be appreciated, as an option of course.

Also, one question: is there a 64-bit version available? I guess it is not that necessary, since Opera anyway splits tabs in separate processes, and each of them can access a maximum of 4 GB of RAM on 32-bits, which is highly unlikely I guess (a tab accessing that much), but just asking…?

TL;DR Great job, Opera, keep it up! Thanks!

    • Wando Schneider

“please add an option to set inactive title bar colour, or stick to the system provided one” – Go to Settings > Browser > and enable the “Show System colors…”

“is there a 64-bit version available” – Yes, It’s experimental, will be back in the next release.

      • Valentin Radu

Thanks, but again, that sets the active title bar colour and I am fully aware of that. I would appreciate an option to have the inactive title bar colour synced to the system value, not hard coded.

I am looking forward to seeing the 64-bit version soon as well.

  • pidgin

I’m experiencing crash-loop. Could use fine after first installing but after closing have not been able to start it up again. Just crashes, starts itself again for like 4-5 times and finally closes. Win7x64

    • BK

Sorry for that. What’s your OS ?

      • pidgin

        win7x64

        • BK

can you try to restart your browser few more times, we will get some more crashlogs to find it 😀

          • pidgin

did it 6-7 more times. What happens is I start it, then it automatically crashes and starts/crashes again automatically 3 more times. After that it doesn’t start anymore. One time it asks if I want to add more information to crash report but I am unable to click Yes/No, usually just “Opera has recovered from crash”

      • valshebnaya

I am having the exact same problem, Windows 7 64 bit as well. >.<

    • Aneta Reluga

      1) What is your OS?
      2) I know it is sort of ever-given advice, but can you please backup your profile to a safe location, remove it, restart Opera, set up VPN and again restart a few times? Did it occur again?
I am unable to reproduce. My primary machine is Windows 7.

      • pidgin

Did that. It starts up only once successfully and after that the crash-loop again.

        • Aneta Reluga

          Thank you. Pushed for investigation.

    • Ricardo Burrows

I also have the exact same problem on my Win7x64.

  • Just one question. How can you offer a VPN for free? I ask, because I’m suspicious ever since I learned that hola does it by actually letting other users use your internet connection when you connect to it.

    • Aneta Reluga

We are earning money using a different business model – namely, we are making money through partnership agreements with major internet companies.

  • Puneet Kumar

This is not working for me, I am behind my college proxy. Is that the reason?

  • O. Lee

…nice I thought, finally some light at the end of the tunnel for us in China, but… sadly not! Even managed to download it (using another VPN) and setting it up, it does not work. Cant get any access with the VPN on.

So, no use for us here in China, where we need it most. Of course there was a news item about Opera being bought by a Chinese company recently, so no suprise it will not work here. Sad and un-necessary hype.

And quite useless as it is….

    • Marko Koivuniemi

This is just first developer version. It’s no need to be so dramatic. (It could be that this is not gonna work in China but we don’t actually know it yet.)

    • Ariane Lu

We should’t use built-in VPN, or Opera’s domain name and services will say goodbye to us.

  • Licaon_Kter

addons.opera.com/en/extensions/details/github-notifier/ still gets disabled out of the blue, either 2.2.2 from Opera or 2.3.2 from Chrome Store 🙁

  • PlonPlon

Are you planning to add France to the VPN soon?

  • Denyer

Can we get tabs on the left/right side yet?

    • BK

we are looking into this, but not yet.

      • Denyer

        Look faster! 😀

  • Nekomajin43

    Not bad. 🙂

    • BK

      Yes for merging.
Blue – not red – as red across UI is associated with error reporting.

Anything else on the “to kill” list ? 😀

      • Nekomajin43

Well, since you are getting better in avoiding accidental data loss (trash folder in bookmarks, removed delete button on SD), the next huge step would be an optional confirm exit feature… 😛

Blue/red reasoning is OK. But you should do something with the icons then, because the address field is starting to become a visual mess.

      • Kai Ockendorf

I have 2! The first one you already know 😉 & the second: customized Speed Dial tiles…with own pictures! 🙂

  • Parmeet Singh

The IP address seems to remain the same in Mac version, even after switching on the VPN

    • BK

sorry for this bug, it’s already on our radar 🙂

  • Elroy

Just Heard Opera is sold to Qihoo Chinese company accused of fraud in anti Virus http://www.myce.com/news/chinese-antivirus-vendor-cheated-several-antivirus-tests-results-withdrawn-75932/

  • MadHakker

any plans on a 64-Bit version of this browser?

    • RafaellaG

      There (is)/was a Windows x64 – experimental Version for the last build(s).
The 64-bit version is hopefully coming the next days again.

      • MadHakker

        looking forward to it! thanks!

  • Calusa

Trying the developer edition with the VPN set for Canada (I am in US) and after exiting Opera it wont restart…keeps crashing

    • Stephen Bard

      same here

      • Calusa

I went into UsersAppdataRoamingOperasoftwareoperadeveloper….deleted the preferences file and Opera was able to start. seems like you need to change the VPN back to USA or your domicile before exiting. Sure wish they could add UK.

        • Compu Majix

Yes, deleting the Preferences file makes it work again, but if you sign out of VPN before closing it, it opens fine next time. Now that’s great for simple browsing, but if you want to use the VPN to download torrents privately, signing out so you can close the browser makes your IP visible to the torrent swarm you are in, doesn’t it??

          • Calusa

Good question….I dont use torrents so not able to answer that

      • Aneta Reluga

To you and basically to all the people getting crashes: the issue is identified and being worked on. Sorry about that.

  • Galactic Humanity

I downloaded Opera today after reading about VPN. No VPN activation found, instead an offer to download SurfEasy VPN. Win 8.1, Lenovo, US. Should I just wait for update or proceed with SurfEasy VPN?

    • Vux777

can you see it here ?

      • Galactic Humanity

        No, do not see it

    • BK

have you downloaded developer version ?
      http://www.opera.com/developer

      • Galactic Humanity

        No, downloaded from the opera.com

        • Wando Schneider

          Only in developer, for now.

          • Galactic Humanity

            oh, i see. thanks

    • RafaellaG

Your Opera DEVELOPER build should be 38.0.2205.0

And yes, VPN is also provided by SurfEasy. It’s an Opera company.
“Secure proxy provided by SurfEasy Inc., an Opera company based in Canada. …”

see in Opera settings as shown in the picture provided by Vux777

    • Aladin Osmić

thing is not on regular opera you need to download opera developer it is version 38

  • Crypto Bitch

don’t sell to the commies. stay strong norway. they will destroy you like they did everywhere else. bolshevik genocide. not that all chinese are bad but their end game isn’t for you or your people. communism is not good or for the best people and your people are worth saving. They WILL kill you like they killed the people in the usa and east europe. they are ruthless. DO NOT SELL

  • DoesntMatter

I wouldn’t use this VPN knowing that the commies can grab my data at any time to server their authoritarian purpose whatever it might be.

The same guys that are already spying and censoring the Chinese people to death now want to place their dirty hands on our data!! F**k off!!

Sorry, but commies involved = no trust.

  • Piotr Łabuda

Downloaded, VPN is permanently in “Connecting” status. No location to choose from, nothing.

    • RafaellaG
      • Test

I’m having the same problem VPN is stuck in “Connecting” status. I’m using a work internet connection which currently blocks some sites. Do you know what the issue is? You’re link just links back to this post.

        • RafaellaG

          No I do not, sorry.
Maybe a person from the Opera team can you help here.

But keep in mind: this is a developer build and it’s introduced today for the first time. There will surely be improvements and fixes in other builds to come until the stable release.

          EDIT:
Btw. Could you please provide your OS. It would surely help Opera team in their bug-tracking.

      • Piotr Łabuda

Sadly, no virtual locations appear for me here. I live in Poland

  • Dark Magician
    • Aneta Reluga

B rating is only for supporting older algorithms. However, I forwarded your concern already, but I’m not sure if or when it is going to be addressed.

      • Dark Magician

Since it is accessed by Opera users (and Opera supports modern algorithms). I see no point in leaving legacy stuff that can be only used for some new downgrade attack in the future.

  • Ghirahim

    Good job, lads.

Now tab stacking and notes and life will be perfect.

  • adamcole

It’s awfully slow, should it be?

  • ga_pechorin

hi, i can’t see the message with the url when i am over a hiperlink, i am using windows 7 64 (it works for bookmarks)

    • Aneta Reluga

You mean the pseudo status bar which should appear in the lower left (or sometimes right) corner when you hover over a link? I have seen user complaints already about this, but it looks like a pretty rare “sometimes” issue 🙁

      • I’m so rare? Flattered 😀

        • Aneta Reluga

          Both of you are 😛
Anyway, it is now reported as DNA-52902 just for your information.

      • ga_pechorin

yeah, that one. i will try a clean installation, thanks!

  • Rick

Now if you can just provide the most advanced feature of all: the option to add a “Home” button, we’ll be all set. I realize this is way-out there technology, but it should be possible (and no, not with an extension, that would be silly).

  • sgrandin

in nearing two years, we can’t get tabs on the bottom or scalable printing, but VPN. The latter is great, the priorities not so.

  • Phil DeNegri

so far there are only 3 locations, canada, us and germany. will they be adding more?

  • cncritic2014

There is no such function on Opera China!

  • Wraith

The VPN works well just a little slow but is a nice addon.. :), and a few days ago I deleted one of my Speed dial tile and I was about to ask for this, wow you just read my mind with the new button on dials. 🙂 Nice update guys.

  • grumblecat

    Does it work on XP?

  • yigido

Is it just proxy changer or VPN? or you just called it VPN?
most popular extension (Zenmate) it is not VPN, it just changes the proxy.. It only effects the browser itself.

  • led9ru

VPN your is damn slow, I have tried all three countries, Canada does not work, the other terrible pause when loading site!
I have Torbrowser, i believe him when I need stealth. I can forgive him for the slowness, but your vpn = slow shit without trust and reputation! (hello China).

Your vpn as a replacement turbo mode unacceptable! Slowly and sucks!
TURBO MODE 1 = NOT WORK!

    sheer frustration..

He says “dig around” – lied.

    • Nekomajin43

What does the word “developer” say to you?

      • BK

developer? a person/company trying to build this skyscraper next to his flat 😛

    • RafaellaG

The feature should hopefully improve in the next build(s).

    • BK

sorry for temporary slowness, we are working to enhance and speed up the backend servers infrastructure. Should be much better within days.

  • Ian

And when we will be able to disable WebRTC detection ?
Without that every VPN is quite useless…

  • Jerry Emery Delacruz

Just tell me how to enable the damn thing and stop with the endless sales pitch.

    • BK

Read the damn post and come back if you fail;)

      • Jerry Emery Delacruz

So I’m traveling thru death valley and had time to kill. Five paragraphs in are the instructions for activating the vpn. Of course you’re not told until the end of this article that this applies only to the developer version.

        • Aneta Reluga

I agree – looks like the first sentence of the article:
“Today, we want to share with you another big thing that you will first see in the developer channel for Opera for computers.”
          seems to be totally unclear.
          Oh wait.

    • lol. We have been asking for detailed posts forever and now that we get them people are complaining about it. You can’t win.

  • tim

So I downloaded the “Opera developer for 64-bit Linux – deb file”,
extracted it and got 2 folders, DEBIAN and usr, tried all the Opera
developer icons, but but can’t start, run it…. Any suggestions…?

    • Łukasz Jagielski

      Which distro are you using?

      • tim

        Kali Sana, so Debian based…

        • Łukasz Jagielski

Deb is not an executable so you shouldn’t be able to run it, you can install it with dpkg or some other program for package management in your distro.

  • beBoss

Do you have any problems with Facebook chats? I receive messages (i can see them on my phone), but the browser not showing them until I refresh the page!

  • Marek

I’m really impressed by the latest features, good work.
Anyway, I can’t change volume in the pop-up videos on developer. I don’t know if this is a know issue. I’m on win 7.

    • BK

It’s not yet there, under construction.

      • Marek

Ah, alrigh them, am waiting 🙂

  • Dave Diehl

I have used Opera for a while. This new beta with VPN is great and is very fast on my windows 10 laptop.

  • Vlad Violenty

Please. Add “Add custom adblock list by url”

  • Nico

    I have a suggestion:

Could you please move the VPN button out of the address field and next to the toolbar (where the download button is). This way, I could easily turn on/off the VPN before visiting a specific website (since the VPN is not visible on Speed Dial). Turning on/off VPN in the settings everytime is cumbersome.

TunnelBear is a great example with a nice and clean UI, maybe you can adapt some of it for your own VPN client.

    • BK

Thanks! we are going to work for a while now on improving recently introduced features, so every suggestion is very welcomed 🙂

      • Nico

        Thank you! 🙂

        Here’s another idea:

Would it be possible to introduce something similar to whitelists/blacklists for the VPN feature? Meaning that the VPN feature will turn on/off automatically when visiting a specific site. I don’t know if this is possible, because the VPN actually needs to turn on BEFORE the site is opening. But this is just something that came to my mind.

        Example:

http://www.opera.com is on my VPN blacklist (meaning that I always want the VPN to be on when visiting http://www.opera.com, ideally with a pre-set location)

I enter http://www.opera.com into my address bar and hit ENTER

Opera detects that the site is on the VPN blacklists, turns on the VPN, waits for the VPN to be activated and then starts loading the site.

Maybe this is just something for power-users, so it doesn’t have to be ready for Opera 38 or even 39, but it would definitely be nice to have.

        • Captain Kay

Should not be difficult to implement, the browser would always have a vpn connection on and if you use a site from blacklist then opera would automatically use the vpn connection. Useful feature.

          • David_Gould

I use an extension called Auto Switch Mode to do this for TOR. Basically, you can tell it to use a proxy for certain domains.

    • Leonardo Gomes

Why do you need to turn the vpn on/off in settings? You can just click on the button at the address bar for that.

      • Nico

I don’t like to repeat myself, so please read my explanation in my original comment. In short: I want to be able to turn the VPN on/off before visiting a certain site. Right now, that’s only possible through the settings, because the VPN button is not visible on Speed Dial pages. Got it?

  • Ralf Brinkmann

64 bit, 32 bit, 64 bit, 32 bit… I’m too old to jump around every week like a kangaroo. Please make 64 bit standard.

Download manager page still not TABable. 🙁

VPN not tested yet. Can I watch NBC with it?

    • BK

Ralf! you are too old? So behave like and adult please 🙂 I expect your regular professional review, not complaining!

      • RafaellaG

        Why is it so complicated to provide Win x64 build every time?;
x32 and x64 Linux build you provide too.

        • Tommy Wille

Since it’s experimental, I would guess there’s problems with compiling.

          • RafaellaG

But it’s not complicated to do the same for Linux?
Btw. they should learn to do it right. And how to learn it? Provide us with more Win x64 builds^^

          • Tommy Wille

Without knowing the techical details, I guess the two operating systems behave differently and therefore also its code and compiling. Opera might use a third-party library that is not originally coded for 64-bit builds on Windows for example, which might create unexpected results. I would assume that if x64 fails to compile on a planned developer release, they won’t hold the update back just because of that. Especially not since 32-bit programs runs perfectly on both. 🙂

          • Tommy Wille

But hey, I understand you want x64 builds, especially annoying missing build updates because of it (or switching between). Therefore I continue with 32-bit because of it, as I’d rather just wait until it’s stable. Have a good weekend.

          • RafaellaG

But if they always delay the x64 builds because they won’t deal with the difficulties it gives them, then there’ll never be a stable Opera x64 build released.

          • 1337

On Windows OS, x32 and x64 are very different and don’t use the same libraries which make it hell to compile. It’s two times more work.
            On Linux it’s much simpler.

          • RafaellaG

            Thank you. Good to know.

        • BK

join us, you will see what’s easy and what’s not for yourself from inside 🙂

      • Tommy Wille

Ralf been busy touring today with his one man band, so it’s probably just exhaustion. 🙂

      • Ralf Brinkmann

Okay, here is my regular professional review:

        – I am missing the 64 bit version. From now on it should be present every time. It’s 2016 now.
        – The download manager page (CTRL-J) is only good for tennis-elbow-fans and people with good eyes. Still no keyboard handling possible.
        – Flash videos are playing – good.
        – This VPN thing sounds very interesting, but I don’t have any experience with VPN. So I have to find out what I can use it for. Maybe I don’t need any Proxmate or Youtube unblocker any more. Or I can watch Chicago Fire or Chicago PD on NBC now.
        – The name of my browser is OPERA, not MENU! And it’s a good name.

    • RafaellaG

With virtual location USA, you can.
But you have to deactivate (atleast) Ghostery, if you have that add-on.

      • Ralf Brinkmann

Ok, good to know. Maybe I can try this out one day.

        • Veger

Take a whole day… Tried NBC and it is slow (but it does work here!!)

      • Ralf Brinkmann

Can you tell me what is the reason that I have to deactivate Ghostery? Is this recommandable in general while using vpn or just for this special purpose?

        • RafaellaG

I think, one or more of the blocked content is needed for youtube to work. Don’t know exactly which.
You can try to configure it and permit trackers manually in Ghostery. Or you can whitelist (deactivate it for that site) Youtube.
You don’t have to deactivate it as whole though.

          • Ralf Brinkmann

Ach so, then this is only a setting for Youtube. Now I have to find a video that is not playing in Germany for testing purposes. I don’t find any just now. Do you have any hint for me?

          • RafaellaG

            Sorry, I don’t.
            https://apps.opendatacity.de/gema-vs-youtube/
You can use this link and hover with your mose over /click on the red squares in the picture. All that videos (and more) are blocked in Germany.

          • Ralf Brinkmann

Ok, great! With VPN I can play them all. No more Proxmate, no more Youtube Unblocker and unwanted Ad- and Spyware.

          • Ralf Brinkmann

I found a list of actual in Germany blocked videos and I could watch them all, except videos which are blocked because of copyright reasons (contains material from UMG). The only thing that I have disabled (allowed) in Ghostery is the Google AJAX search API, because I also need this for some other pages.
Btw: I was surprised how many german videos are blocked in Germany and I wonder who is able and allowed to watch them.

          • RafaellaG

I think most are blocked precautiously, to get no trouble with German GEMA.^^

  • Rick

    The Developer version keeps crashing.

    • RafaellaG

Where? In which situation? Is it repeatable?
      What’s your OS?

How should the Opera team work with your one sentence. It’s meaningless.

      • Rick

I’m on Windows 10 Pro. I just downloaded and installed it. So it’s the latest developer’s version. I don’t know if it’s repeatable or not on your end but it worked just one time. Now every time I try to open it, it opens and close, open and close and finally just shut down.

        • RafaellaG

Seems to be the same problem pidgin and Ricardo Burrows have (search for the names; currently on comments page 2 or 3)

          • Rick

read their comments. so no solution at this moment?

          • RafaellaG

Not that i know of. But I’m not from Opera.

          • Rick

What the? I thought you were from all your comments here. Anyways, I’ve uninstalled and reinstall. Seems to be ok for now. Hope Opera fixes this problem.

          • RafaellaG

I’m only a user with currently “some” time to read all the posts and write commentary and and a passion for Opera^^

But that that will change soon. The time thing^^

      • Rick

        California

        • clamo Joat

don’t give people that kinda personal info on the web

    • clamo Joat

don’t turn on the VPN. if you have it on, it will loop crash and then close after a few times. to get back in, you need to uninstall and reinstall.

    • O. Lee

yep, second that! same here. Installed the Developer version 38.0.2205.0 on Mac OS X 10.8.5. Starts and works fine. Then enabled the VPN in the Preferences, and no longer connects to any site.

There sometimes seems to be a blue or orange VPN button in the browser address bar, but clicking it, crashes Opera.

Tested from Beijing on Unicom fibre network.

      • Aneta Reluga

Unfortunately, it is known and being worked on. Sorry for the inconvenience.

      • Same with Windows 10. “Opera developer Internet Browser has stopped working”

  • Dragomir Petrov

Am I doing something wrong ? I thought the vpn is free but it sends me the surfeasy vpn and payment window ?

    • clamo Joat

ya just like me. it’s only built in when using the developer version.

      • Dragomir Petrov

        Yes . I found that too .

    • Leonardo Gomes

Have you downloaded and installed this build of Opera developer?

      • Dragomir Petrov

Hey, that was the reason lol. I just did it and it works . Anyhow the free option is limited to 500 mb . Still the paid version has some good offers , so will consider ! Thanks for the reply !

        • Leonardo Gomes

The built-in vpn has no data limits.

          • Dragomir Petrov

Will that vpn let me download safely torrents ?

          • Leonardo Gomes

I think so. At least i don’t see a reason for the vpn to not let you do it.

          • Dragomir Petrov

I see . Thanks one more time for the replies .

          • Leonardo Gomes

Just note that it will allow you to download the . torrent file but not its contents as Opera is not a torrent client.

          • Dragomir Petrov

            Sure I understand that . I have bitTorrent . Cheers !

  • Ben S.

This does not work for me, (on Windows), it never gives the option of VPN in the Privacy section, it only has SurfEasy VPN that requires a subscription. I have gone to the developer site for the setup file, not just the normal download link.

    • RafaellaG

VPN only works with current DEVELOPER version (build 38.0.2205.0) (see installation links above).

      • Ben S.

It says not compatible but to choose the ‘get full installer’ option to get it to work, which only brings up a blank page, hence why I had already stated that I went to the DEVELOPER page itself seeking that setup version. That developer version on the opera.com/developer page and the free VPN developer one are obviously not the same so I guess that I will have to do without.

  • Captain Kay

As always very good browser with latest technology.
I have a suggestion for countries like China, Iran and some others they will block the ip relatively quickly, you should use some mechanism that use a pool of dynamic ip numbers, and give randomly one from the pool to the client. Also use https port for vpn so to hide that it is vpn traffic.

  • MaxImus

If I enable VPN, Opera just crashes. Now I can’t even disable it because it would automatically closes itself if I open it. The only way is to uninstall then reinstall. Is this a bug? Guess I’ll just wait for the final/non-developer version.

    • clamo Joat

if there is a way to run the program in safe mode, we could find out.

    • BK

Sorry for this bug. Currently the only work around is to remove the profile data, or install opera is USB mode in new folder/path (see installer options)

      • jova

It says i am at another location, does not work on amazon prime, chrome does work. This does not, it’s on USA, but does ID it. Help anybody PLEASE

  • DoesntMatter

A VPN operated by a company based in China, where censorship and monitoring is the rule. Will that work??

    • Leonardo Gomes

How great it’s not the case of Opera.

    • O. Lee

of course it doesnt… tried it on the Unicom network from Beijing just now. No go!

  • Veger

When I measure the speed gain of the adblocker on Facebook, it is (somehow) slower without ads. (which could be considered a bug…)

But, it still (proudly?) says that it is XX% faster (in the circle) even though it is XX% slower…

  • Biohazard

    Fuc&%$n AWESOME

  • jova

It says i am at another location, does not work on amazon prime, chrome does work. This does not, it’s on USA, but does ID it. Help anybody PLEASE

  • tzoller

Running the Opera Developer with VPN. Initially runs with VPN with Florida address. Shut down and restart Opera Developer and it crashes. Running under WIndows 10.

    • Kornelia

Hi, we’re aware of this crash (DNA-52714) and we’re already working on this. Sorry for that!

  • Oleksandr Moskalenko

Thanks guys. Working properly. I live in Crimea, Russia and its very useful to have that free option here. Keep going!

  • You are the best. You have bring the most wanted features. VPN and native ad-blocker. I am switching to Opera since I am a chrome user it is very easy to switch. they have the same core browser (chromium).

  • Alexander Lecard

too bad, installed developer to check out the vpn. im on a $12,000 rig
running windows 7 64 bit. installed wont load pop up white screen
crash, pops up white screen crash 3 times then nothing. no error messages
nothing. oh well back to firefox 45 which been using for 10 years.
    sorry opera you blew it.

    • You know what Developer version means right?

That being said, I also ran into a crash without error messages or anything. Happens each time I start the browser it instantly crashes.

      • Alexander Lecard

Uhh yes id say so ,since i retired after 14 years for federal govt and cyber command.developer or not when it crashes out of the gate that tells me all i need to know.

Yes i know about 15 computer programming languages too.sorry thats unacceptable to crash at gate tells me they posted before they verfied or checked for code violations. Simple fix.thats not point.bad trying to get new users away from other browsers.

        • Leonardo Gomes

As it seems that you have no idea about what it menas to use a developer build of Opera, then i guess you should read this explanation.

Opera’s developer builds are not for those who can’t deal with (big nasty) bugs.

          • Alexander Lecard

Guess you folks dont understand english.im very well known ok.again 30 years in computers.started way back before netscape.ive used developer builds for 30 years.using several as we speak.developer does mean bugs.It DOES NOT mean releasing a build that wont even open or start.thats just bad programming and code quality control.

Learn that these forums and builds are for criticism suck it up thats nature of coding.crash at start .not a way to sway power users to use your product.

          • kstuffs

You’re just wrong. The developer version is being developed by the Opera developers. There’s minimal quality check. There’s no guarantee. There are GOING to be BUGS maybe giant ones that won’t start or crash. Why don’t you go by the definition that Opera defines? You can read right?

          • Alexander Lecard

Ok ive said my peace.im a programmer and have been for over 30 years.i do not agree bugs means the program wont even start.not in my world.btw opera doesnt need fanboys to defend it.

They need users to express problems.i have .rest is up to the developers.

          • Jack Burton

No one cares about your cred.

How are you going to complain about free?

            They’ll fix it soon enough.

    • Programmatic410

I like Firefox in a lot of ways, though it practically takes a $12,000 rig to get Firefox performing as well as Opera.

Thanks Opera for adding the search box option! The separate search box was keeping me using Firefox. Please add the ability of portable installs of Opera to allow pinning their shortcuts to the taskbar separately, without that they all merge into sharing the same icon… Vivaldi’s and Comodo’s portable installs don’t have that problem. I setup multiple portable installs of browsers setup for different tasks, and Opera’s icon sharing issue causes I can’t use more than one portable install of Opera per desktop.

Seems as if I remember that Opera didn’t like Windows 7 when I tried it a couple months ago. I suppose we’re noticing the start of what will be an increasing number of programs that don’t work well with Windows 7 or aren’t supported at all.

The upcoming new FIDO biometic auth support in Windows 10 is a good reason to upgrade, and I expect it to work with LastPass when it releases (I hope, since I just renewed). Manual logins are slow and hopefully soon to be made obsolete.

      • Alexander Lecard

Firefox has always worked out of the box for me.from low end to high end. If indeed its windows 7 so be it.im not upgrading to big brother windows 10 that records your activities, keystrokes, logs, scans your hard drives and sends microsoft info non stop 24/7.i also think anyone using windows 10 but yet using a privacy browser/vpn is laughable.

  • John Miller

I tried it, but with the VPN on I can’t use Google, Gmail, nor Youtube. A message appears “This site can’t provide a secure connection. http://www.google.com sent an invalid response.” …. Anybody with the same problem??

    • Leonardo Gomes

No problems here. I tried using the Canadian server for the matter.

    • Kornelia

Could you describe exactly what steps you made? And what operating system you’re using?

  • shane

Liking the video pop-outs. Really handy to watch a video while reading other tabs. Would be nice to see a ‘fullscreen’ button on it eventually. A pity many sites are still using flash – I wish it would hurry up and go away.

Haven’t had much use for the VPN. I tried it to get around some geo blocking but they just detected the IP as a vpn/proxy and blocked me anyway. So I don’t have a lot of use for this.

You do need to include the ‘use extensions from chrome store’ as native functionality.

  • Laga Mahesa

Ooo built-in VPN! I believe I can very very easily sell Opera to my fellow Indonesians now that this feature is in place. I’ll hold off until it’s more accessible though – As Nico has already mentioned, the procedure for activating/deactivating VPN needs to be improved.

  • Does this Opera built-in VPN also work for external apps…like downloading torrents with Transmission?

  • Jose Silva

I downloaded opera developer installed it and there is no free VPN whatsoever… just a subscription one. Is there any secret option here?

    • Leonardo Gomes

So you are clicking on the VPN icon on the left of the address bar and aren’t seeing the button to turn vpn on?

      • Jose Silva

I have not any VPN icon on the left of the address bar

        • Leonardo Gomes

Are you using this build of Opera?

          • Jose Silva

By “this build of Opera” do you mean developer? Yes the version is 36.0.2129.0_Setup.exe because version 38.0.2205.0 says it is not for my OS (Vista). Is there any Opera developer for this Vista 32 OS with the VPN unlimited? Is there going to be one? Thank you LG.

          • Leonardo Gomes

Nope, i mean Opera 38.0.2205.0, which is the first build with the vpn.
Last Opera with support for Vista is 36, so those in that OS will not be able to use the vpn.

        • Jack Burton

Make sure you’re using the dev version not the regular. You enable it in settings>privacy.

        • shane

You need to first enable the VPN in the settings.

  • Thorin Oakenshield

Is this also available on mobile phones?

    • Leonardo Gomes

      Nope.

    • Jack Burton

It is, but not the free version. They also have a pay VPN that includes mobile devices.

  • Desperate.Weirdo

You guys at Opera HAVE TO enable this VPN feature for Android.

  • Keith Martel

So despite proven, persistent wifi connection, latest developer version comes with error: No internet connection. What gives?

    • Kornelia

I would suggest to reset your connection and try again.

  • Jack Burton

In case you missed it you have to install and use the dev version, guys.

It works and is about 90% of my 100+ Mbps line. Fast VPN for free!

Only problem I have now is it constantly crashes and I can’t use it anymore.

  • Alexander Lecard

I would sure hope the developers accept and understand bugs and complaints.better then few of the insisting fanboys of this forum.fanboy on social media.NOT where professionals are reporting issues.

    • Leonardo Gomes

And i (and others, i would say) hope that people could accept and understand bugs in an alpha version of a software as something trivial and part of the process of development and not as some big deal that would cause the end of the world.

      • Alexander Lecard

I would say to you and few other defenders.im being singled out.why.others here have had same issue as me.

I stated the issue and said a program not even starting isnt a way to win new users.

I was immediatly attacked as some noob idiot who doesnt know what a developer build is.even after stating professional, programmer etc i continue to be attacked because i like others here cant open the friggen browser to use it.yet you continue to act like my 1 bug complaint was somehow me acting like its the end of the world.

I use nightly builds of firefox and alphas the browser works, opens yes theres bugs but it least opens and operates thats alphas and nightly builds.

So please take your attacks ,fanboy nonsense elsewhere.now its you few pushing new users away.

        • Leonardo Gomes

New users usually don’t install and use the alpha version. Those using developer (alpha) builds use to know the consequences of it.

  • Richard Hamel

Works perfectly. Will cancel my VPN subscription. I hope they will come up with an iOS version of that browser for my iPad.

  • SteveC

There’s no VPN! I found where to enable it in Settings, Privacy & Security but nothing happens unless I stop and restart it but then it crashes so it doesn’t work!
Also in the blog it says “Let us know what you think” but there’s no way to do that. Seems like Opera still sucks as much as before so don’t use it.

    • Richard Hamel

If you look next to the place where you enabled it in the settings, privacy & security, you’ll see a link that is written “learn more”, if you click that link, it will open a webpage with VPN enabled. You can save that link for next time…that’s it. Enjoy!

  • David_Gould

I have one concern. With this VPN coming after Opera’s purchase by a Chinese consortium, how can we trust that it will protect our privacy?

If you can satisfy that concern, you have a winner.

    • Leonardo Gomes

Let me answer with another question: how can you trust that those “made in China” parts of your (or any) device aren’t compromising your privacy? 🙂

      • David_Gould

That traffic can be monitored and thus verified. Secondly, doubling up on privacy risks just doubles the threat.

    • Kornelia

The acquisition offer is still in process and has not yet been finalised. In the meantime, we continue operating Opera business as usual, and our usual business is giving users the best internet experience. Web users are demanding more privacy online and improved access to content, and we want to give it to them.

      • Sven Slootweg

VPNs and proxies do not provide privacy. They allow the provider in question to see (and if they so desire, log) all the traffic passing through, and still can’t provide any protection for the ‘last mile’ to the destination server.

      • David_Gould

Thanks for the reply, Kornelia, and I truly appreciate this direction — indeed I have been asking for it for about 8 years.

I would tell your colleagues that they need a better answer. People who are thought leaders in this area are naturally suspicious and we know that bandwidth is expensive.

Here’s one example where Opera Software missed out on good free publicity:
        https://yro.slashdot.org/story/16/04/21/1217239/opera-adds-free-vpn-client-with-unlimited-usage-to-its-desktop-browser#comments

Ideally, you would employ someone like Privacy International to advise and verify what Opera Software are doing. Failing that, you would tell us where the servers are located and thereby what privacy laws they are bound by. I’m sure we’d also like to know what kind of encryption is used.

  • Hotman Putra Silalahi

can get link for offline installer?

    • Leonardo Gomes

On the right side of the page as always.

    • Kornelia

Installation links are placed under the blog post.

  • lzzmoo

so, What i want to know is that can be free also in android ??

    • Richard Hamel

That is a “developer” version, which means that it hasn’t been “officially” released yet. I guess that you’ll have to wait a bit for that?

      • lzzmoo

that’s ok ,I can wait for a long long time xD

    • Leonardo Gomes

Probably, but you will have to wait the Moblie Team to release it on Opera for Android.

  • RobDecker

I’m in China. Downloaded, changed the VPN to “on”. Facebook worked. Then restarted and Opera is in an endless crash mode. Doesn’t work! Can’t get it to stop crashing.

    • lzzmoo

      in China too

      • RobDecker

Is it working for you, because it’s not working for me?

        • lzzmoo

          yeah,there’s a problem too

    • Ben Wong

      same problem in mainland chn

    • Same problem everywhere. It happens when you turn on the VPN and then close it and try to open it again.

  • Richard Hamel

I wonder what O/S people who have a crashing issue are using?

    • RobDecker

Windows 10 for me. I also changed the setting to delete cookies on close in Opera.

      • Nith Proxy

so it wont crash on win 10 if you delete cookies and history ?

        • Aneta Reluga

The temporary workaround would be to use a standalone installation. The issue itself is unfortunately known, with fix coming hopefully soon.

  • tri ms

why is vpn not activated when we use private window?

    • Richard Hamel

For some security reasons, a lot of features don’t work in private windows (like flash player for instance).

      • Leonardo Gomes

Flash player should work on private windows without any major issues. And here it works.

Only extensions should not work on private windows by default.

    • bwat47

it looks like the VPN is activated (if you visit a site that shows you your IP, it’s the VPN’s IP if it’s enabled), just that the VPN icon is not showing in the addressbar

  • Ben Wong

only successfully use vpn for the initial try, and then when i try to restart the browser it keep crashing and unable to stop crashing

    • Kornelia

Sorry for that but it’s a known issue, DNA-52714. We’re working on it.

  • Harley Ren

Cannot download Opera developer for linux version .

  • JG

Any rough time frame as to when the VPN feature may show up on the Android app?

    • Kornelia

Good question. We are launching a VPN for iOS very soon, and we are thinking about making one for Android, as well. Stay tuned.

  • mirifem

Works perfectly. I want to know how much free bandwidth per month.

    • Waterman Smith

      free, unlimited

it’s loop crashing on windows 10 x64bit when you have the vpn turned on

Also is there an offline installer because the online one download is blocked here

  • Side

Would it be possible to only enable the VPN on a per Tab (or at least a per window) basis ?
    Possible use cases :
    – You need to access resources on a local (read enterprise) network
    – You need to have access to your full bandwidth to access some resource

    • yeah, I asked for that, too. It’d be the smart thing to do. I want to have a site continuously opened that requires a VPN connection, but not the rest of my myriad of tabs – that’d be an overkill.

    • Tuten Hu

is it hard to use two browsers?

      • Oh yes, I remember a time, before I first used Opera (when was it, 2002 I think…?), when we were opening multiple browsers… fun times! 😀

    • BK

Yeah, we need to enhance the UI switcher.

  • Waterman Smith

great work. Once this news have been released, many many users have installed opera browser

  • It was working perfeclty. But if you close it with the VPN then it starts loop crashing everytime you try to open it. Tried reinstalling but I cant open it again.

    • linux mint user

      I have the same problem(linux mint17.3)

    • Side

Working fine for me Windows Server 2012R2

  • Nerdebeu

90% of the sites are not launching with the VPN, either from the SD or Favorites (for the 3 countries). On the other hand, if I go on these sites without VPN, and I restart it, I can browse. Empty the cache and cookies does not change anything. Windows 10 x 64.

  • Sha Wokou

can you increase a japan vitual location?
speed is very slow on china when i use USAcannadagermen vitual location.

    • Kornelia

This is a developer release. We will add more countries as we progress towards a final version.

  • Ants

Is there a way for businesses to block the VPN whilst people are on the corporate network, eg through GPO? If not, we’d have to block through the firewall or block the app. We need to see what is happening on the network.

  • yigido

You said VPN but it is actually a proxy changer with 256bit encryption. Whats the difference between Opera Turbo and this new VPN feature?
    Please answer me thanks

    • Kornelia

      No compression, choice of location.

    • Юлия

said VPN but it is actually a proxy changer
Is it true? How do you know (I am curious for myself)?

I found this article which explains the differences between them, and read fast a few paragraphs. My understanding is that a VPN would make your activity hidden from your ISP, whereas a proxy changer would not. And if that’s the case, Opera needs to step up its game.

      • yigido

Please read it, this is how you will learn the differences between them: https://www.helpnetsecurity.com/2016/04/22/opera-browser-vpn-proxy/

        • Юлия

Thanks 🙂 I would have not switched from my VPN service anyway, at the end of the day I’m interested in protecting all the traffic that goes out/in of my laptop if I’m on a public WLAN, let’s say. Other browsers, e-mail client, etc.

          • yigido

            Good move 😉

    • Leonardo Gomes

Well, you can’t change location using Turbo. Also Turbo doesn’t work for secure connections.

  • Pushkar Gogte

Why windows x64bit version is not released?

    • Kornelia

      Not this time, sorry.

      • RafaellaG

So we again have to wait for the next build?
        I hate it to install – uninstall – install… 🙁

It is time that there is finally a (stable) Windows 64-bit version of Opera.
How long there is a Windows 64-Bit OS???

  • TheBearJew

What kind of logs does the VPN keep?

    • It is a no log network.

      • Sven Slootweg

That’s a fairly meaningless promise, as there’s no way whatsoever for users to actually verify that this is the case.

VPN services (whether yours or that of any other third-party provider) can’t actually provide either privacy or security: https://gist.github.com/joepie91/5a9909939e6ce7d09e29

        • jho

this is of course a problem which every VPN has. Maybe you should only use VPN for non critical stuff like unblocking youtube. Never use a VPN for your bank acount.

          • Sven Slootweg

If you’d read my comment carefully, you’d have seen that I *am* addressing other VPN services indirectly as well, not just that of Opera.

It doesn’t matter what you use it for. Outside of the few edge cases listed in the article I linked, VPN services will *always* compromise your privacy and security, and *never* be an improvement upon either of the two. Whether you’re browsing YouTube or e-banking.

  • oic

Other free VPN tend to have bandwidth problems. Making downloading stuff very slow. Will opera have similar problems?

    • Kornelia

These problems are typical for VPNs that struggle to earn money, for example by selling data. Our browser has different business models, making money through partnership agreements with major internet companies. That’s why we can focus on the product quality and put more resources on the development side.

  • My1

is there also a portable version?

    • Юлия

Get Opera from here: Opera developer > Windows (Offline) (always avoid network installers), click advanced/options during install and follow these steps.

You can install extract it wherever you want, and even move the whole folder afterwards, just don’t place it in folders like Program Files or similar.

      Open Opera via launcher.exe

      • My1

oh I didnt know that that option is in the setup file (it should really be written somewhere this is great)
also yeah I always avoid network installers when possible because in many cases I like to keep the setup files (especially when e.g. saving them in the network drive at work so everyone can install flashplayer or java without having to DL it again.

  • Amir

what kind of encryption do you use for these proxy servers? does it use ssl encryption?

  • . 紅葉

is there anyone have problem install it in ubuntu 16.04 64bit? tried it using software center and gdebi but still failed. is there any solution?

    • Boaty McBoatface

Download the .deb 64bit developer browers form the website… open a terminal under Downloads and type: sudo dpkg -i name of file

      • . 紅葉

        thank you! it worked!

  • Amir

it tries to reconnect every time i head to a new domain address. and it makes web browsing slow. ( however, exploring one website is fast and satisfying)

  • jho

Is this the same VPN function like your Surf Easy VPN? I am asking because I could not use Surf Easy because I was not able to register. The extension always says “network error”

    • Kornelia

With the VPN feature built right into the browser, no additional download is needed. It also avoid making the OS send certain requests like certificate revocation checks – these normally leak when you use an encrypted proxy.

      • jho

Thanks for the answer. So assume that we do not need any log in info. Good to hear.

  • 连培培

I have an Opera browser with version 36.0.2130.65 on my 64bits windows computer. Why no VPN option in my settings?

    • BK

Sorry, you will need to get your OS upgraded. VPN is available only on O38+ which is available only on Win 7+.

      • Larry

I have windows 10. Why did I only get the same download?

        • Leonardo Gomes

          What same download?

          • Larry

Sorry. I downloaded the wrong program.

          • Larry

I finally downloaded Opera 38 and enabled VPN in the settings. However I now can’t find the VPN button to turn it on. Where is it supposed to be?

          • Aneta Reluga

The button appears in the address bar, near the badge, when you go to any page.

          • Larry

OK. Now I see it. Thank you. Too bad it is empty right now.

          • Leonardo Gomes

It’sIt’s on the left of the address bar, when you are on a page.

      • CS

So why didn’t the Opera team state it in the beginning?! Pushing people to update the OS is no good.
I liked the VPN option as now I am on a paid VPN (expat in China) but no thanks, I hate the attitude and so goodbye Opera.

        • Leonardo Gomes

What exactly they should have stated?

That Opera will no longer work in Windows versions older than 7 was stated O37 cycle started.

That the VPN is available only from this build? Well, there are download links in the article/post.

          • CS

Well my Windows is 7 Home Premium and I don’t really think it is as outdated as to be considered “too old”. Still the version I was able to download was 36-something. I downloaded and installed it in belief that it was the latest one and it was exactly the one packed with the features advertised. It was not, and there was no warning.
This sucks, whether you like such a definition or not.

          • Leonardo Gomes

And are you sure you are downloading Opera developer?
Are you trying to download using the links gave on this post?

          • CS

            Leonardo, I EAT MY WORDS.
            I was wrong.
I first downloaded a standard pack from Opera website, not the developer option. That’s why there was no vpn.
Downloaded and installed the one you pointed at, and voila, vpn is right here.
            Sorry. I suck.

        • Aneta Reluga

No one is pushing anyone to do anything here. Besides, the information about stopping the support for older Windows versions was issued earlier.

  • DoesntMatter

It’s great a idea, but it should be P2P and open source.

And please sell Opera to a free country instead.

  • Юлия

    VPN Needs more countries, especially non -EU or -US ones, like Switzerland, Ukraine, Russia, Belarus, Norway etc.. That is if you want privacy (;

It’s good that you currently have Germany though, I’d rather have my traffic routed through EU servers than US ones.

  • Lewis Cairney

no VPN option for windows 10?

    • Kornelia

Are you sure, you’re checking the right build? 38.0.2205.0 is the one. And you need to enable option in Privacy & security panel in Settings.

  • My1

god is this epic. first time I use opera but this thing looks a bit like firefox (especially with the opera button topleft, which reminds me of the Firefox button which actually snapped into my Firefox via classic theme restorer)

  • sxz

When I click on the VPN icon the virtual locations list is always blank. 🙁

    • Kornelia

      What operating system?

      • sxz

        Windows 7

      • catup

        Neither Windows 10

  • daniellz

After this or previous update i’ve lost statusbar. I mean, that I can’t see link url at the bottom while hovering link. Fresh install with removing current profile data did’nt helped. Does anyone have this issue?

  • TDTDW

What a great innovation ! -:) Can you have setup instruction for each device? It doesn’t work on my computer and ipad.

    • Kornelia

To activate the VPN in the developer version, click the Opera menu, select “Preferences”, “Privacy & security” section and toggle the VPN feature on. An icon will appear in the browser search and address field, from which you can see and change your location, check whether your IP is exposed and review how much data you have sent through the VPN.

      • catup

        No available location now.

        • Aneta Reluga

The dropdown became empty after restart?

  • Here’s two problems I’ve noticed:

-Hitting “pop-up” in a Gmail message opens a new window, but that window is blank
-clicking on the Disqus bubble next to my name doesn’t opent he floating bubble – it looks like it’s refreshing, but it doesn’t. Second time I click on it it opens (correctly, I think) the Disqus page in a new tab.

  • The vpn doesn’t work in incognito mode, because I don’t see the vpn button in an incognito window?

    • Kornelia

      Not yet.

    • Parry

This was the question I came here to ask.. I will patiently wait for it to be implemented.

  • Bora Bosna

I’ve enabled the VPN in Opera Settings but still cannot access sites blocked by my government.

    • RafaellaG

Have you tried to click on the VPN symbol (with VPN on in settings) in the address bar and chose one of the yet available countries (USA, GER, CDN)?

If no (or not enough) countries are available, don’t worry. As stated below by the Devs more countries to chose from will come. Try again in the next build(s). It is still a Developer Opera.

  • I have the same issue, crashing constantly.

  • Where did the free VPN end up? Now it justs says something about surfeasy.com VPN which is a PAID service.

    • Aneta Reluga

That’s something different. To use the free built-in version, you have to enable the option in the Settings > Privacy & Security section (in the newest developer of course).

  • Freiderikos Valmas

I click on the VPN button, then when I try to select anything from the “Virtual location” drop down, nothing appears – the list is empty. Any clues? I’m behind a corporate firewall if that helps.

    • Aneta Reluga

Unfortunately it is a known issue – apologies. 🙁

      • Freiderikos Valmas

Is there a workaround, something I can do? Or just wait for a next build? Thank you in advance.

  • LoverOfLife

    1. When custom order of toolbar extensions ?
    2. When more development of Search box ?
    3. When will we have others countries in news ?

    • xirit64

      3. Agreed.
      From North to South

      -Finland
      -Lithuania
      -Ireland
      -Austria
      -Switzerland
      -Romania
      -Serbia
      -Greece
      +…
      to just name a few.

      • BK

no worries, more countries are incoming.

  • Johan

    Add Britain please.

  • Amir

why does it integrate cookies and history with google chrome?
for example when i login to facebook in chrome, i automatically get logged in in opera as well!!
    how do i disable this?!

  • icetom

How can we be sure that you dont leak our personal information with your deal with the asian company that wants to buy you? Whats the news with that deal anyway, we have not seen here anything anymore about it?

    • Leonardo Gomes

Well, how can we be sure that someone with access to our personal information will not leak them? We simply trust those persons (or companies or whatever).

      • David_Gould

We don’t trust them and we avoid giving them information where possible. That’s the point.

        • Leonardo Gomes

So why are you using a software that you don’t trust or made by a company that you don’t trust?

If you use a product is, basically, because it fits your needs and you trust in that product.

          • David_Gould
          • Leonardo Gomes

And as a Norwegian company based in Norway, Opera needs to follow those lawz.

          • David_Gould

No it doesn’t. Please stop with the false information.

          • Leonardo Gomes

So a company with its head office in Norway should not foillow Norgewian laws? That’s new to me.

          • catup

You are wrong…… How do you know that?

          • David_Gould

            Know what?

      • icetom

im asking because this service is “free” and free nowadays means we pay with our personal information. thats the ressource nowadays.

  • Compu Majix

It’s working perfectly for me and I haven’t noticed any slowdowns at all. This is awesome!!

  • Compu Majix

If you are stuck in the crash loop because you left the VPN on when you closed it, deleting the “Preferences” file makes it work again.

Here is where you find it….
    UsersAppdataRoamingOperasoftwareoperadeveloper

Just delete it then restart Opera.

I had to do that, but then it stopped crashing when the VPN is on and it works perfect now. I have no idea why it stopped though.

  • Dark Magician

It turns out ”VPN” isn’t a VPN but a proxy. Don’t mislabel things.

And if it’s really a VPN:

    1. What are the cipher and key size?
    2. Data rentention/logs policy?

    • Somewhat Reticent

(No-Log (save aggregate bandwidth) SurfEasy (Canadian), 128bit OpenVPN for desktop and Android and 256bit AES IPSec for iOS?)

  • Boaty McBoatface

The VPN / Browser leaks WebRTC so what the point of using it?

    • Aneta Reluga

The issue is known and in the roadmap to fix.

  • catup

No location is available now. It used to show three locations.

  • Just downloaded Opera, the website says it has built-in “free” VPN but as soon as I go to access it, I see that there is a monthly fee to pay? How does this qualify as free??

    • Aneta Reluga

Are you sure you have downloaded the developer stream version from here: http://www.opera.com/developer ? Please note it is a *developer* stream, not the stable one.

  • eric

glad to add this wonderful VPN feature, but it doesn`t work in China using both Mac and windows 10 OS, and no selections in the Virtual location list. anyway, thx a lot.

    • catup

      Try now.

  • Mole

Well, VPN sure would be nice if it worked, but in (developer) version 38.0.2205.0 it simply doesn’t. Not on a corporate LAN anyway.

The LAN is not unduly complex and does allow setting up and using an OpenVPN client to access an OpenVPN server out in public IP space so if that works, Opera should too.

Disappointing – a premature release perhaps?

    • Leonardo Gomes

Nope, just initial release on the developer channel. So problems are expected to happen.

  • ThanhLiem

Sometimes Web contents crash when activating VPN

  • Dustin Gardiner

VPN (in fatc proxy) lovers, please read it: https://www.helpnetsecurity.com/2016/04/22/opera-browser-vpn-proxy/

    • BK

Every VPN is a proxy 🙂
We’ve delivered browser proxy. Read http://www.opera.com/blogs/news/2016/04/opera-doubling-server-capacity-vpn/

      • yigido

Can you please enlighten us about this?
“There’s also a potential privacy issue: when setting up the VPN, the browser requests something called device_id, this is subsequently sent in every request to the proxy and it survives browser restarts and reinstalls unless you also delete your user data when uninstalling. This might be used for user tracking for whatever purpose,”

        • Marko Koivuniemi

Did you read comments of this link you got? Maybe you should, there Krystian answered for similar question: “nothing has changed here since Opera 12 – you can read the details in our privacy policy (available at opera://about/privacy). Each installation of Opera – like almost any other software offering auto-updates including antiviruses – has its hashed ID – it is used so we could count number of users using the browser.

          Best!

  • Fábio Rodrigues

There’s no VPN option for Linux whatsoever. So, please remove this from the above information: “… while Windows and Linux users need to go to the “Privacy and Security” section in “Settings” and enable VPN there”.
Is there any plans to offer this feature on Linux at time soon?
Besides this we got a excellent and fast “new” browser.
Thanks and keep the good work guys.

    • Licaon_Kter

So your Opera->About says version: 38.0.2205.0, right ? And you don’t have the Settings->Privacy-> VPN checkbox?

        No. It says:

Version: 36.0.2130.65 – Opera is up to date
        Update stream: Stable
System: Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (x86_64; Unity)

The deb file I got from http://www.opera.com/download has the same version number. So there is a newer one. Just not on Linux for what I see. Am I right?

        • Vux777

since you like the quotes ツ …
          first sentence in the article:

Today, we want to share with you another big thing that you will first see in the developer channel for Opera for computers.

          • Fábio Rodrigues

            OK. My mistake. Sorry guys.
“Developer Version” is the right one.

            Thanks Vux777 !

            PS: yes, love quotes. 🙂

        • Licaon_Kter

No, as the text says in multiple places, the DEVELOPER version has this feature, you are on the STABLE branch, besides that there is a BETA branch too (which ill get it in the future I guess, but earlier than your stable anyway).

So, get the DEVELOPER version using the links at the end of the post, if you want this VPN thing.

  • EvilCLAY

when i open the VPN button, the Virtual location is blank。
    WHY ??

  • Mark Luna

Can’t use the browser anymore. Crashes itself 3 times and then exits.

    • Leila Ghasemi

      The same problem.

  • iYuzver

Make the built-in translator as in Chrome. Without him very bad and no expansions can replace him.

    • Leonardo Gomes

You can go to any translation service page (google translator, bing, etc) and add it as a search engine. Then you can just highlight a text, right click on it and usr the “search with” option.

      • iYuzver

That’s not what I need. I need an opportunity to translate all text on the page without resorting to the third-party websites as in Chrome.
I don’t understand why it was removed in Opera, it’s the built-in function in Chrome.

        • Leonardo Gomes

          Chrome uses Google Translator .

And Opera never had such feature, so nothing was removed. Also, Chrome and Opera are different browsers with different features.

          • iYuzver

            Opera on a engine Blink.
From all browsers known to me on the basis of Blink only Opera has no built-in translator.
Some websites don’t want to work with expansions or transfer through the reference at all. Only through vstreonny in Chrome. Otherwise it wouldn’t disturb me. I should hold two browsers. It is inconvenient.

          • Nekomajin43

The Blink engine does not contain the built-in translator of Chrome. It is a bundled extension in the browser.

          • Leonardo Gomes

I may be wrong but don’t think it’s a Chromium/Blink feature. And not all Chromium based browsers have it; I don’t see it on Vivaldi for example.

    • Leila Ghasemi

Maybe Avant browser is a good choice for you!

      • iYuzver

ha-ha. Chinese Chrome good, but I’m use Opera.

  • catup

I would say it could be even better if we can set vpn for specific websites, since we need speed for lots of local websites.

    • BK

Yes, we need to alter how VPN is reachable.

      • catup

        Great!!! Thanks.

  • chen

The browser is beautiful, but I can’t use the VPN ,maybe that’s because I’m a Chinese

  • Stephen Buyers

Happy with VPN. Travelling in Asia Pacific, time and time we get blocked in various countries. Even checking gmail and g-drive is a challenge in some places, am sure you all know where!

  • Ralf Brinkmann

The 32 bit version sometimes hangs when scrolling down in Facebook or playing embedded videos in Facebook.
    W10x64

    • Leonardo Gomes

I’ve noticed that “lag” on scrolling on other pages too.

  • Ralf Brinkmann

How can I send a personal message to users of this blog for further exchange of experiences?

    • Vux777

      you can’t
      disqus doesn’t support private messaging

    • xirit64

There’s a “start new discussion” thing in discus have you tried that before? Not that I know myself how it does/would work but you could be the pioneer 🙂

  • Netflix detects it, and it crashes a lot. Still needs a lot of work. Hopefully at some point it will work.

  • Leila Ghasemi

Thank you for built-in VPN, however, when I turn on VPN option and restart my PC (Windows 8.1 X64) it repeatedly crashes and the browser doesn’t work at all. Another problem is that when I change the country which are available in the VPN option, the same problem happens, the browser crashes and doesn’t work again. Please resolve the problem and update the browser. TNX.

    • Aneta Reluga

Sorry for the inconvenience. It is known and should be addressed with the next developer update.

  • yigido

I posted this on another section of blog still no answer..

You were selling the SurfEasy extension in Opera. It has free (500MB limited) and premium subscriptions. Now, SurfEasy working on free built-in VPN in Opera.

    Some questions appears,

1 – What happened to paid users of SurfEasy?

2 – Will you continue to serve paid SurfEasy plans? Will you promote SurfEasy in Opera?

3 – You are an advertisement company like Google. To make money and pay the bills. You just integrated a adblocker to your own browser. Where will you make money? Are you chasing our VPN traffic ^^

I read a comment about your built-in VPN, please see:

“There’s also a potential privacy issue: when setting up the VPN, the browser requests something called device_id, this is subsequently sent in every request to the proxy and it survives browser restarts and reinstalls unless you also delete your user data when uninstalling. This might be used for user tracking for whatever purpose,”

    Thanks for the answers.

    • Arjan van Leeuwen

1 – What happened to paid users of SurfEasy?

2 – Will you continue to serve paid SurfEasy plans? Will you promote SurfEasy in Opera?

Yes, SurfEasy is a different product as it’s a full VPN that encypts and protects all data, not just data passing through your web browser.

3 – You are an advertisement company like Google. To make money and pay the bills. You just integrated a adblocker to your own browser. Where will you make money? Are you chasing our VPN traffic

That’s not correct: Opera Software, the part of Opera that makes the browser, makes money (and pays bills) with affiliate deals and search deals. The way for Opera Software to make more money is to get more users, because more users do more searches. This is also the business model of most other browsers. For more information you can dig into Opera’s latest financial report here: http://www.operasoftware.com/content/download/7485/250452/version/2/file/4Q15.pdf (search for ‘Desktop browser’ to read about how money is being made!).

      • yigido

Thanks for the answer, these are should be in the release posts to make calm down users like me 🙂
You still did not answer the latest pharapgraph about privacy problem.

  • nickmeister

Lies! For MS VISTA users, the current Opera developer version as of 4/23/2016 is version 36.0.2129.0 which does NOT have free VPN and only contains the ability to set up the SURFEASY paid VPN service.

    • Phoghat

and why the hell are use using Vista, for dog’s sake?

    • BK

Sorry, it’s available only on O38+, which is available only on Win 7+

  • Trọng Hiếu

browser without VPN -> works fine, with VPN -> crashes a lot, Opera 38.0.2205.0, Windows 10 64bit, by the way, this is an awesome feature, keep up the good work guys

    • Zheng Zhao

Yes,Crashes often, I reinstall it and then it worked well.

  • Larry

I am living in China. I enabled VPN in my settings but the virtual location is still blank. Do I need to do anything else to have VPN or is my problem because I’m going thru Chinese servers?

    • Zheng Zhao

      我遇到了一样的问题,但是出现在windows 7上,在Mac上就没有这个问题。

      • EvilCLAY

        同 Win7,也遇到了这个问题,没有解决:(

  • Zheng Zhao

the free vpn is not working on Windows 7

    • A$h Wa!

Will it at a later date??

    • yigido

Please be sure that you are using the latest “DEVELOPER” version.

  • Arasaid

    Keeps crashing.

    • Kornelia

We need more information to reproduce your issue – what operating system? Did you turn VPN on?

  • Nashuim

I think that you should probably put a warning in this article that the Developer stream is for public testing and instability is expected. Otherwise I feel like those posts are never gonna end.

  • MasterLift

They need to introduce a way to disable WebRTC natively in the browser like Microsoft Edge and Mozilla Firefox can. In the meanwhile this tutorial helped me disable WebRTC in Opera with an extension: http://www.ghacks.net/2016/04/23/block-opera-vpn-from-leaking-your-ip-address/

    • 1337

      My mistake.

      • MasterLift

After I changed the IP Handling Policy to “Disable non-proxied UDP (force proxy)” in the options for the “WebRTC Leak Prevent”-extension it worked for me.

        • 1337

Yes I was about to edit my comment after testing it. Thanks.

  • Joshua Margolin

apple.com chat service still knows I am outside the US although I turned on vpn

  • Casper

Where ‘Enable Free VPN’ is shown in the example above, mine just has a large box advertising and asking me to buy SurfEasy VPN for $3.99 per month.

    • Vux777

first make sure you have developer version 38.0.2205.0
you can enable VPN on settings page under Privacy and security http://prntscr.com/avyf8p

    • RafaellaG

And keep in mind DEVELOPER means maybe buggy, not all new feature work right, etc. – because DEVELOPER is not even BETA; which isn’t STABLE^^

…although mostly Developer Opera works fine – only some features aren’t ready yet 🙂

  • cflo360

I wound not recommed anyone using there vpn option seeing that there a dns leak with there vpn allowing them to log and record you traffic to website.

    • MasterLift

Can you explain in more detail on how you know there’s a leak and that they are logging traffic?

      • cflo360

Did a dns leak test with there vpn on and more then 5 to 6 dns from google come back that a dns leak since google log every traffic on there network. atm the browser is crashing on me. I have made my own vpn with dns that do not log on the server which i would recommend ever vpn provider to use instead the of google dns. Prefered dns.watch, opennicproject.org

        • Leonardo Gomes

And what exactly that test showed?
What is the relation between Google ips and Opera VPN?

          • cflo360

If the vpn server dns connected to a no log dns there is no logs which mean you traces are not shown and are not stored anywhere. If a vpn server dns is connected to a dns which dose log like google dns they stored a copy of everything your did when using the vpn which mean website you went to can be traced back to you. The test i did just shows me if i’m safe or not that is all.

          • keijo

i’m not getting what is a problem here, if vpn makes dns-queries with vpn’s virtual ip, what connects it to your ip?

          • keijo

surely you have to trust that vpn provider that it will not log or do anything nasty with your traffic, that same problem is with your normal network provider..

          • cflo360

I found like to agree with you but usely if you have a ipv6 it can also be seen by the dns if you still haven’t disabled it from your computer.

          • Leonardo Gomes

And how do you know if the server logs your activity or not?

        • Leonardo Gomes

OK, i went on two or three of those dns leak test pages and they showed that the VPN seems to use Google’s DNS servers and that there is a chance that those servers may be associating my ip address (or most probably the VPN’s one) with the resolved addresses.

Well, i don’t think that the fact that the dns server knows my ip address is a problem at all. Most probably every server that you access knows it.

And the VPN needs to use some DNS server, preferably one close to the VPN server and with a high performance and uptime rate.

  • boomer

    do forums block VPNs?

    • Leonardo Gomes

Opera forums? I don’t think so.

      • boomer

        huh?

        • Leonardo Gomes

You didn’t say what forum you are referring to.

  • rock_steady

we need a UK proxy. Please…

  • M.Elamin

i have installed OPERA 36.0 but the free vpn is not working on Windows 7 🙁

    • Near the end of the article it says, “Download Opera 38 developer and give the free, unlimited VPN a try.”

    • Leonardo Gomes

VPN is available from Opera developer 38.0.2205.0

  • yigido

Yandex added anti-DNS-spoofing feature. We need it we need it :))

    • Licaon_Kter

DNSCrypt support yes, it would be nice, but Yandex has their own servers in place too.

  • redfox

How strong is the encryption for Opera Windows version?

    • Tommy Wille

Strong. It’s using AES-256. The number of years a brute-force would take is not achievable.

  • Marko Koivuniemi

I would LOVE an option to disable dragging of tabs to separate window. I’m not sure is it me or Macbook Pro’s touch pad but it happens too often that I accidentally move tab to separate window and it’s not always easy to have it back.

  • yigido

Can someone has problem with LastPass extension on developer??
LastPass disconnects always after some time surfing. Please check DNA-52995..
I have no problem on stable. Last 2 developer release have this problem.

    • Kornelia

      We will take a look.

  • Kamen Minkov

Has something changed related to opening new windows? Before, I could press Win + 2 (Opera’s icon is the second icon on my taskbar) and a new Opera window would appear. Now I get switched to an Opera window open on another desktop. Using Windows 10 14328.

  • pureocean

Thanks for built-in VPN. A request about in address-bar VPN icon.

It should be appear new blank tabs, too (of course if VPN is actived in Settings). Why? Because in new tabs can’t be clear actived or deactivated of VPN. But then it appears when the user entering visit webpages.

  • Larry

Why is the VPN virtual location area blank in China on windows 10?

    • Licaon_Kter

      Read the other comments:
      1. from China you might/can not use the VPN ( surprised?)
      2. the blank thing is a known bug, it will get fixed

  • Ralf Brinkmann

A keyboard shortcut for switching VPN on would be nice…

  • yigido

I want to import filter rules list. What kind of filters do you support? Whixh format??
    Thanks

    • Leonardo Gomes

      It’s on the post.

    • Kornelia

As blog post says: “The lists have to be in EasyList-style format, and you can use existing lists such as the EasyList affiliate lists(https://easylist.adblockplus.org/en/) to ensure you get to block all that you want. As a reminder, Opera itself provides a block list based on the publicly available EasyList and EasyPrivacy.”

  • Jp Myers

After install I used the browser for about an hour then it crashed 3 times and wouldn’t load again. I’m using Windows 10. I tried it the next day with a fresh boot, still crashes. Waited a few days for a possible newer version. Still the same thing. I really want this to work, the hour I did use it, it was wonderful. Please fix this problem 🙂

    • StewartM

Set compatibility mode to Windows 7 on the Opera.exe in the version folder. This cured mine.

  • A Non

VPN didn’t work. Tried all settings, all countries. With the US on one ip address/location site it gave my address as a US one and then on a second click, gave my correct one. Rebooted browser with VPN on “Germany” and checked it with the various ip address/location services. All gave my correct address. This on Windows 7 pro. Total waste of time. Also the browser seems optimized for fat fingers on a mobile device. Everything is HUGE and lots of white space which is unnecessary and annoying on a laptop. I used to use Opera years ago but switched to Chrome, back to Chrome again.

  • Charles Kensington

I do not understand. Who is paying for the VPN servers?

    • Leonardo Gomes

      SurfEasy/Opera, i would say.

    • L33t4opera

Hi Charles, “Opera Software, the part of Opera that makes the browser, makes money (and pays bills) with affiliate deals and search deals. I saw three virtual locations but without IP address.

  • MGM

VPN did not work VPN icon is orange
notice: i live in Saudi Arabia maybe its due to country restriction on proxy

    • Kornelia

Thanks for your report. We will analyse this and will be working on solving this issue.

      • TBozMac18

Same here in China, the vpn button stays orange, says “connecting” but never does, and the “locations” drop-down at the bottom is an empty list. 🙁 thanks for your hard work, but our salvation is far from realized…

        • Thomas

Confirmed. It worked in Bangladesh for me, but it doesn’t work in China. I suspect that’s due to the known fact that China blocks the openVPN protocol. Only double-encrypted VPN still works.

      • husin

with me also VPN icon is orange
I live in Saudi Arabia too
        Pleas repair this
I Think its best feature ever in internet browser

      • Antonio Marcos Carianha

Same problem for me in Brazil. I am using VPN to bypass a proxy, but VPN not connecting and show empty list in virtual location

      • Thomas

Sorry for double-posting but want to make sure a Mod knows it…
The feature has worked for me in Bangladesh but not in China. I think it is due to the fact that China (and possibly others) are blocking the OpenVPN protocol. Only some double-encrypted VPN still work.

      • Byambaa

Same problem for me in China. I am using VPN to bypass a proxy, but VPN not connecting and show empty list in virtual location . Sometimes its working . but sometimes not working How can we fix it 😀

  • Pushkar Gogte

VPN cannot bypass cyberoam firewall please fix this as hotspot sheild can bypass it.

  • redfox

I am still looking for additional features like an ability to:
    – move the Tab Bar below Bookmarks Bar, or to the bottom of the window
    – (re)define own mouse gestures, including middle mouse button (-> focus URL bar)
    – adding custom entries into context menu, like “open image in new tab”, “use selected text as URL in new tab”
    – open link in new foreground tab by default (customizable in prefs)
    – define custom parameters for each server (like override.ini in old Opera 12)
    – enable/disable webfonts for some servers
    – define own searches with hotkeys
    etc.

  • YummyLecker

I don’t know I’m wrong or something, but when I click to download SurfEasy VPN, is not for free. From Opera, it asks me to choose a plan of 12€, 6.50€ or 9€. I have followed the steps but it always asks me to choose a plan.

    • Kornelia

No need to download anything. You need to go to Settings – Privacy & security – Enable VPN

      • ivan

that’s a lie… i get this message where the ‘enable button should be’

        Want even more privacy?

Enhance your online experience and enjoy superior privacy, security, and freedom, even on public Wi-Fi. Learn more about SurfEasy VPN.

and them im sent to a page that’s offering me paid vpn service… im located in bulgaria…

        • Aneta Reluga

Are you sure you have downloaded the *developer* version 38.0.2205.0? This is the version with native in-browser VPN.

          • mdiwncor .

This seems to be my problem. I have the Beta, not Developer version.

          • Aneta Reluga

Well, this feature will eventually make it into the stable version, 38 stable being the target.

  • Ralf Brinkmann

I think, with this VPN feature you are on your way to the pole position. We are waiting for your further steps to improve this feature and make it stable.

  • VPN University

Just published a detailed how-to article on Opera’s VPN. It also includes other considerations like encryption strength, a DNS Leak test, limitations (technically more of an encrypted proxy than VPN) and usage suggestions. Find the article at: http://www.vpnuniversity.com/news/free-vpn-service-now-built-opera-browser

We also tested opera’s ability to bypass geo-restriction checks at certain websites like Pandora. At the moment, it seems to unblock them just fine.

    • Vux777

      about build-in torrent functionality:
that was in old Opera Presto
new Opera (on Blink engine) doesn’t have torrent client

help file is for Opera version 9

    • It’s too early for this. This is basically an alpha version. You should do this once it’s released in the final…

  • The VPN needs the UK as a target IP.

    • Iain

Really with GCHQ collecting every keystroke. I want to see Iceland 🙂

  • Jacob Schaub

If I ever exit out of Opera developer while the VPN is turned on and try to open the browser again it keeps crashing. I have to re-download the browser when it does this. Does anyone know how to fix this?

    • MasterLift

Try switching servers, and turn the VPN off and on (left side of the address bar), then restart browser to see if it crashes again.

      • ka wai ng

The browser crashes and shutdown instantly, I just can’t click anything. Even I re-install it, it will happen again.

  • Reinhard V Lohengramm

On Coursera, I can’t access the controls on html5 videos. They are present there, but I can’t click them. On some videos, the controls are not even displayed.
    Clicking anywhere only does play/pause.
Right clicking and selecting “Show Controls” displays the alternative controls that do work.
Keyboard controls also work (up/down for volume, left/right for seek)

  • Dave

    Hi all,
what about some possibility to connect to VPN through proxy? It’s trying to bypass proxy, so it can’t connect, because traffic to internet is allowed just via proxy in our company.

  • qwerzaq

he will automatically download from this website? now it is impossible you presses speaks AdBlock isn’t established
also it will be automatically updated
to me it is necessary RU AdList

    https://adblockplus.org/ru/subscriptions

он будет автоматически скачивать с этого сайта? сейчас это не получается нажимаешь говорит не установлен AdBlock
    и обновляться будет автоматически
to me it is necessary RU AdList

  • It doesn’t work the VPN what’s wrong just “connceting” I waited so long.

  • Arshiyan Tauheed

Keeps on restarting. The proxy worked fine the first time but the browser isn’t opening. It keeps on crashing.

    • redfox

We are all waiting for a fixed version… maybe soon.

  • wow. Love opera since childhood <3 🙂

  • kfal

Developer version installed and working perfectly on my office workstation this morning. But the developer version downloaded to my laptop at home just now has the VPN option missing from the Settings menu. Why is this? It is definitely Developer, the logo is the silver one, not the red one, and the “About” tab says “Version 36.0.2129.0”.

    • Leonardo Gomes

Latest develoler build, containing the VPN feature, is 38.0.2205.0.

      • kfal

Tried download again. I get a file called:
        Opera_Developer_36.0.2129.0_Setup.exe

        • Leonardo Gomes

Are you on XP or Vista? Those are no longer supported.

          • kfal

Oh dear. I am on XP at home and always will be. Goodbye Opera!

          • Leonardo Gomes

Well, you can also say goodbye to, Chrome and others Chromium based browsers.
Other browsers like Firefox should drop support sooner or later if they didn’t already.

            As well as other programs.

          • Ralf Brinkmann

Say goodbye XP. Believe me, it will be better for you.

  • Hans Holt

Opera with VPN works well – How to get more countries like Denmark?

    • Leonardo Gomes

You wait them to be included.

  • Rick Kenneth Restrepo Carmona

Opera crashes when I click on VPN, running OSX 10.8

    • Sarah

      Same.

    • Cristian Maluenda

In OSX 10.10 works fine now!

      • Rick Kenneth Restrepo Carmona

        Still crashing in 10.8

  • Nikku

I am under HTTP proxy network and have to use a username-password to connect to the network.
How can i enable VPN in this case?

    • sxz

      The same

  • Ox000000

    I’m only getting a “paid subscription” option…

    • RafaellaG

Then you don’t have latest Opera DEVELOPER 38 installed!

Probably you use Stable 36 or Beta 37 instead.

Be also aware that the internal VPN feature is a little bit buggy at the moment.

      • Ox000000

Thanks! Anyway does that means it will soon switch to the paid model, even on the dev chanel?

        • Licaon_Kter

No, it went the other way around.

          • Ox000000

            #opera, i love you.

  • xirit64

So how does it work now, VPN running along with Opera Turbo? Is using Opera Turbo a liability now?

  • AlkaSetzer

    A question, I’m currently running Opera 38.0.2198.0 64bit in windows 10.
When I go to opera://about it says to me that I’m running the latest version of the browser, also on your download links the 64bit version (for Windows) is missing.

    This means:

    * the 64bit version of Opera is being deprecated before being released?
    * due to incompatibilities with the VPN code, the 64bit version will not have support for VPN
    * You forgot to build the 64bit windows version and release it to the update servers

    Am I missing some option?

    • RafaellaG

      1. The auto updating does not function with the 64bit version (probably because it’s ‘experimental’ – so you always have to download/install it manually).
      2. In the actual update there’s no 64bit build released https://www.opera.com/blogs/desktop/2016/04/free-vpn-integrated-opera-for-windows-mac/#comment-2636829566
(probably due to complications when trying to compile it. Don’t know.).
      3. Hopefully with the next update there’s also a 64bit build again.

      • AlkaSetzer

        Oh..
In the meantime I found the comment from Kornelia about there being no 64bit build for this release, but in any case thanks for your reply.
I didn’t know that the 64bit build would not automatically update. Well, as long as it notifies me that there is a new version that will be enough.
Also hope that the 64bit builds become “mainstream” 🙂

  • Bami Popoola

This really worked. It is an extremely useful integration. More genius from the minds of the Opera dev team

  • redfox

The best feature and advantage over other browsers.

  • Wow, thanks! The VPN service works great. However, Netflix doesn’t seem to work on Ubuntu 16.04 (with Opera developer version.) Is there any way to get around the issue?

  • Nail

Opera Dev keeps cleaning cookies when browser exists even though the persistent cookies setting is on.
    Is this intended?

  • L33t4opera

    New build – Opera developer 38.0.2213.0 😉

  • Ralf Brinkmann

There it is: New Developer 38.0.22.0 – Now with Windows x64 again.

  • rajesheber

The build version 38.0.2213.0 is not able to connect to VPN and reverting back to the old version auto updates it self. Anyway to stop auto updates

    • Cristian Maluenda

Looks like it doesn’t work overseas, at least in south america.

  • Tonci

The web site http://www.linkdecode.com recognize add blocker even when is turned off.

  • Harry

Just tried the developer version with the WebRTC extension, and it works fine. However, when I tried to use it with my Roku box, Roku can’t make a connection to the Internet, even though the Roku app says it’s connected to the Internet. I’m currently using Roku with a paid VPN service, and it works fine. Is there some way I can use Opera VPN instead?

  • piv

Hi, I was wondering: if i’ve already a vpn service running on my computer and then use opera with it’s inbuild vpn feature activated to browse the web, is my security in any way worse or better? As it any consequence/influence on my security?

  • YM

Well, Netflix seems to have blacklisted it already.
    So much for that.

  • James

Hi, I’ve just downloaded and the “Enable VPN” option states coming soon.

    Any ideas??

    • Leonardo Gomes

Make sure you are using Opera 38.0.2213.0.

      • James

Perfect all sorted, thanks very much!

      • earth2jo

Version: 37.0.2178.43 – Opera is up to date

Just downloaded Opera right now, so how to I get the updated version?

        • Vux777

you need opera developer to test VPN (v38)
links are in the article (at the bottom)

        • Leonardo Gomes

You are using latest stable version. Opera 38 is still in developer channel.

You can download the developer build using one of the links on this blog post.

  • gravitysystems

You blog is very cool, I haven’t tried these things to solve my problems. You have shared some very good info here. I found these tips very interesting and will surely try them and refer them to my friends.

  • Jack Purvis

The latest update to Developer is very nice BUT the VPN is still leaking my true IP address. I thought that this was fixed with update 38.0.2213.0 I just checked. 🙁

    • Fredy – san

I don’t mind much with the free Opera VPN. It is free so I don’t expect premium VPN quality. Features such as data-saving, ads blocker and sites unblock are enough for me and I am very grateful of that to say that Opera now becomes one of my prime browser in my office.

*Yep, mainly due to that site unblock.

    • Nam3less

I tried whatismyip and its showing VPN IP. Dont use turbo setting as it seems to revert back to local IP and maybe also uncheck proxy settings under vpn in opera settings. Dont know the latter helps or not.

  • Vpn is a great feature for browsing internet while on wifi

  • Matteo

Not working in my iphone, can’t connect:( (installed yesterday and worked till now)

  • Anthony

I download the Opera 38.0.2213.0 and my imac says the image not recognized, so I can’t install it in my imac

    • Leonardo Gomes

What version of Mac OS does it use? IIRC you need at least 10.8.

      • Anthony

        I am running OSX 10.11.4

        • Leonardo Gomes

And have you tried to download it again? Maybe the download was corrupted.

  • juniormarbles

VPN crashes Opera Developer 38.0.2213.0. ( Macbook Pro, OS 10.9.5)
Clicking on the blue VPN label in the address bar instantly crashes the browser, every time. Please help!

    • Kornelia

Hi, it was a nasty crash but we’ve finally manage to solve this problem. The fix will come with the next update! Sorry for that.

  • Daisy

“That’s why Opera’s built-in free VPN feature is easy to use. To activate it, Mac users just need to click the Opera menu, select “Preferences” and toggle the feature VPN on…” OK so why do I get :
    Enable VPN coming soon
    ?

    • Vux777

because you (probably) seeing that on Opera stable
      you need developer version

links are at the bottom of the article

btw. stable, beta and developer versions have separate installations (they don’t mix)

      • Daisy

Thanks – I’m sure you’re right but why “advertise” a feature that subsequently only appears in a developer version? The title of the page is “Free VPN integrated in Opera for better online privacy” – no mention of beta/dev etc. Misleading at best.

        • Leonardo Gomes

And there are some download links on the post….

        • LamiaLove

          Indeed.

  • juniormarbles

Is anyone with OS 10.9.x successfully using blue VPN pull down menu?

    • Kornelia

Unfortunately we had a nasty bug when clicking VPN icon on OS X 10.9. It’s fixed now and the update will come with the next release.

      • juniormarbles

When and where will you announce when the next release comes, so I can upload it?

        • juniormarbles

P.S.: VPN blue pull down menu is still crashing as of today (version 38.0.2213.0).

          • Kornelia

Yesterday we released new version, 39.0.2226.0. No crash there. I just checked myself 🙂 Please let me know if you still have some issues with VPN on 10.9. Thanks.

          • musonic

Still crashing for me. The VPN hangs when connecting and won’t let me select a location.

          • juniormarbles

Downloaded 39.0.2226.0.Seems good now. No more crashes. Tried it on two sites. But one, a German TV station, recognizes the VPN and still blocks me, but that is out of my hands and may be beyond Opera’s skills to mask (???)

          • musonic

It still isn’t working for me. I’m running 39.0.2226.0 on Mac OS X 10.11.4.

  • oh dear, great feature just been destroyed by only allowing it in a private window in the latest developer verion (39), which won’t remember logins etc. oh dear dear dear.

    • @chan

Agree!!!!!!!!!!!! Developers please add the VPN back in non private window!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Douchebaaag

Hi, I just switched my laptop from FF to Opera, and the VPN feature is something I’m really interested in, but when I open a new private tab and click on the VPN icon, it turns orange and it keeps connecting, but never actually connects. At first I thought it was because I didn’t choose a location, but when I disable the VPN, I can’t choose any location. So I’m stuck, can’t connect.. anyone has any solution please ?
    Thanks

    • Dean

Hey me too!!!! Any mods here have any solution for this? My browser is up to date with the latest 39.0.2226.0 version. Things were working pretty well before the update (when the VPN still runs in the non-private window).

      • Leon

same here, ever since VPN option moved to private browsing, VPN cannot connect with IP server anywhere. I cannot choose location. Before the change I can choose ip location VPN. (I used Firefox, IE and Chrome) First time user Opera, I believe free VPN is the key for a lot of people to switch from FF Chrome IE to Opera, without integrated VPN, ad block, Flash video Downloader, there is little reason to switch, but now the VPN does not work for 3 days now

    • Rohan Sharma

Same here, it was working fine but now with latest update v39. i can’t use VPN. always connecting and connecting. Now i am uninstalling it. Goodbye OPERA!!

  • Cristian Maluenda

Well, in my case, outside of USA, it only works when I use my job’s VPN

  • Jim Mooney

Too bad opera no longer downloads torrents. They put in a vpn but got rid of torrents so you still have to get a separate vpn client for torrents. I don’t see any torrent addons for opera, either.

  • NEO

Now just works in private window.
    WHY ?!!?!?!?

    • proshio

      Yaaaaaaaaaa same problem 🙁

    • Kornelia

Some Users wanted to use VPN only on some pages, so we moved it to private mode. It’s still under investigation. Remember that this is developer version, not stable.

      • darekdarek

        • Kornelia

There is no way to open Opera in private window by default. And I’m sorry but I cannot recommend any safe way to turn AU off.

      • aftakitani

Please, then add an option to choose where to use. The former way was better.

      • NEO

Is just make like you do with the internal adblock, I can disable only for some sites I want.

      • Michael Marr

HA! I wondered where it had disappeared!

      • piv

Too bad, that way it looses it’s usefulness for me. I want security per default and not as an option I have to remember every time to activate. Maybe you could make it configurable in options so that one can choose wether to always have it on per default in the regular browser or to have to activate it every time you want to use it

      • Tarquin Delphis

Please add VPN as an option to normal browser windows, and please make it optionally a default setting. ( or make private browser a default option) – thanks for a great product

      • Thanks to rollback to previous option to keep it available in both normal and private mode. You might prompt to user that VPN is Switched off by default for every new session to let them decide turning it on or not (This will way save redundant bandwidth over VPN)

    • Scott Young

Same, I want to have an option to use it on all pages so can you make it an option to use on all pages or in private mode only or alterantivley give an option to launch a private window by default?

  • This is great! One thing though: are you planning to add France to the VPN choice?

    • Kornelia

Hi, we will add more countries as we progress towards a final version.

      • ppds

The French Tennis Open Roland Garros is now, and you can watch games on francetvsport.com only with a French IP address. So please… hurry up and add a France proxy, there are only a few days left!

  • Disappointed

VPN doesn’t work with netflix at all…
The only reason why I’d use a vpn in the first place…

    • Leonardo Gomes

      Netflix is blocking VPNs.

  • m sacha

hey guys, i love this new browser. I’m curious to know if there will be additional VPN options like England and India?

    • Kornelia

Hi. We will add more countries as we progress towards a final version.

      • sergio

Hello Kornelia. Tks for info. Is Italy already active? Tks again. Sergio

        • Leonardo Gomes

Nope, unless they have launched it today.

      • m sacha

        Thank you

  • sevaseva

Looks like Opera VPN does not work now – it is not connecting to vpn server for several hours. Some troubles?

    • John

Getting the same… just stuck at connecting. Did you manage to solve this?

      • sevaseva

Yes. First I thought that it was some kind of another ban of vpn-alike-service by my ISP – but no, it was opera “improvement”. They have changed something. I completely uninstalled opera for developer, installed it again – current version. And it works now in private window, as it should. Guys here speak a lot of disadvantages of using “private window”, but it is fare – it is free, and if everybody everywhere start using vpn service all the time during surfing with or without necessity – Opera will close this project because of huge invoices for data transfering. So better to have vpn in private window – than not have it at all.

  • Ke LeBron

    Adding China would be great

  • Sudharsan Pathi

Hello Opera VPN does not work fast 2 days. Please let me know?

    • Sudharsan Pathi

Please let me know VPN does not work.

      • Leonardo Gomes

It seems to be working here.

  • bbkr630

I was very happy with firefox but when I heard about the built in VPN in opera I made the switch because guys this is just awsome feature 🙂 thnx opera jut pls if you could increase the speed a little bit

  • sergio

Hi, is the VPN already active or it says from browser options still not available? Thanks for info. Sergio

  • Juan Peirano

    Windows 7, opera 39.0.2226.0.
Since the update I cannot connect to VPN. Being forced to use private browsing if I want vpn, it is really inconvenient

    • Jesse Eby

Same issue here. Have you found a solution?

      • sxz

“VPN works only in the private window.”

        • Juan Peirano

VPN does not work at all

          • sevaseva

reinstall it for current version, completely, it worked for me.

          • Juan Peirano

I did it, but it still does not work. Virtual hosts list is always empty

          • sevaseva

After uninstalling I also used ccleaner to clean the registry. May be it was an essential part.

          • John

Nope , did the same and still an empty list and stuck on connecting. Probably a bug in the software means it can’t access the server from W10.

          • sevaseva

I use it on W10 also. On 2 computers. But it works unstable, I agree.

  • Saul G

Hi I have a question I’m in Israel and recently installed Opera version 37 and it says I have to give credit card info and get a trial version of the VPN. I thought this was supposed to be free. So why do you need my credit card information? Also since I’m in Israel will your VPN log in to a U S IP Address so I can see blocked content from the U S? Please someone in Opera please reply

    • Vux777

I’m not from Opera, but this is simple question….
Opera free-unlimited feature is currently tested only in developer builds (version 39)
and you are using version 37
links to developer builds are in the article (at the bottom) if you want to try it

    • Leonardo Gomes

Free VPN is available from Opera 38, currently in its way to Beta.

  • Jesse Eby

Opera developer automatically installed an update and now I have to use VPN in a private window instead of my normal browsing window, and while in the private window, I can not use the ad block. I was in love with the version where I could use the VPN and adblock at the same time. Why was this changed? Is there a way to use both at once still that I’m not seeing? It would be incredibly helpful for the country I’m in if there was a solution to this

    • mickrussom

It stopped working anyway even in private.

  • sxz

Virtual hosts list is always empty 🙁

    • sevaseva

uninstall it and then install current version, it worked for me.

      • sxz

No always empty, and check update system does not work

    • John

same here – uninstall and reinstall does not work. No virtual hosts in list so always stuck on connecting. Not great… back to Vivaldi!

  • MadRidley

Want to use this but install fails for Operating System (I have Vista) and says click button to ‘Get Full Installer’ but nothing happens. So I install Opera from another page link and then try to repeat above but still nothing happens! Any suggestions please.

    • Koye Barry

I’m also running Vista on one computer here and found that the downloaded file wouldn’t install – nothing happened at all. So, I went to download directory, right clicked on the installation file to get the dropdown menu, chose Properties and changed the permission to “Unblocked”. Then when I clicked on the install file, it started right up. Hope that’s your problem too 🙂

    • Leonardo Gomes

Opera 37+ no longer supports Vista. You need to make sure you are installing Opera 36.

  • musonic

    Still isn’t working for me.
I uninstalled Opera Developer (using AppCleaner to make sure I got everything) and then reinstalled the latest version downloaded from the website.
When I agree to use VPN in the private window, it hangs when connecting and the drop down country list is empty.
Can someone from Opera please give us some response?

    • John

Exactly what is happening with my installation… what’s worse is I just had an update come through and still not fixed… Opera Developer…?

  • burd murd

I decided to try this. Opened the the developer private window, enabled the VPN, tried searching on Google and yet it didn’t work at all:
    “This site can’t be reached

The webpage at http://google.com/ might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address.”

I personally believe It’s because the VPN is just so shitty, It’s not my first time being let down by Opera. It keeps saying connecting continuously and it never actually does. My connection is very much faster with this VPN disabled.

    • LamiaLove

Why oh why are you people using a developer version and come to all those grandiose pessimistic conclusions about Opera being shit overall or Opera VPN being shit or whatever?!

It’s experimental. It means it’s for people willing to experiment, not for regular users.

  • John W

It was working before, probably VPN service overloaded.

    • mickrussom

If its overloaded an error message would be handy.

  • Christopher Tate

I didn’t realize the VPN had been moved to private windows until I noticed some indications that I was no longer going through the VPN. Oops. But then I thought I could get used to the private window VPN, but it never resolves any web addresses.

    • mickrussom

Yes, about the time VPN went private-only (stupid regression) it not longer worked.

  • Jack Purvis

VPN hasn’t worked for 2 days. Each attempt comes back as “This site can’t be reached” Which is a pity. Overload? Installed, uninstalled, clean install but no go. How sad. Nice try Opera but a waste of time. 🙁

    • Fabio M’ Fayez

Same here, did it work for you ?

    • mickrussom

Yep, it worked for me but now has stopped.

  • Fabio M’ Fayez

It’s stopped working, I was thinking it was a problem from my side but here I see a lot of folks complaining about the same thing… wish the admins here could reply to us.

    • mickrussom

      yep, broken.

  • Gold Finger

Its’ not a VPN so don’t care about this thing working or not. You Opera developers do not “sell” a shitty Proxy as VPN because these are totally different pairs of shoes. If you are using this Opera “VPN” for privacy reasons you are screwed. Enjoy…

  • mickrussom

    Its broken now.

  • Ahmed Ali

not working and showing connecting all the time! that’s a joke

    • Leon

It is still in developer mode so it’s not stable, it has been nearly 2 week cannot connect to VPN

  • Brooke Resident

wow now not only provider like google can track me now opera can track me too thank their shity VPN stupid

    • Anonymous Patriot

You clearly have no understanding of networks and technology. The use of a VPN masks your true location from the places you access. For instance, right now Google and every site I visit shows that I am located somewhere in Florida. However, I am nowhere near Florida and when I disconnect and connect again later I will have a new IP address, maybe from Rhode Island. When these IP address are investigated they will turn up with zero subscriber information. Google will have no idea how to track you as you can constantly change the public IP you use and you are anonymous.

If you are truly paranoid then yes in theory Opera could “track” you, but I would trust them farther than I would Google. And if you are that paranoid and afraid you shouldn’t even be using the INTERNET at all.

      • abrogard

Even when you have good VPN you can still be located I discovered.

A youtube vid wouldn’t play for me because it was blocked in my country.

But how did it know which country I was in? I had a vpn IP from their country.

It was because of being logged into google.

When you want to browse anonymously select anonymous in your browser, log out of yahoo and google, use vpn. Then you’re about as anonymous as you’re going to get.

they’ll still get you if they want you though….

        🙂

    • Tedy Pascal

when you activate javascript, you already in the list boy.

  • Mithun Sudheendran

use browsec vpn as an Extension.. this will solve the issue..!!

  • nubwaxer

the vpn works on this W7 desktop but when install the same version on my netbook after a clean install of W7 the settings interface has changed and although it offers me free vpn it then directs me to a page where a subscription starts at $3.99/month.

    • Do you use Opera Internet Browser with built-in VPN? This built-in VPN is for free. We do not ask for subscription. Maybe you clicked SurfEasy or some other ad or extension ?

  • Ricki Lee

I can’t even turn it on. It just says “coming soon!”???

    • Leonardo Gomes

Are you using Opera developer 38+?

  • ppds

With the Opera VPN on, the page does not work as expected. Take this very page. When I load it with the VPN on, then I log into Disqus through the interface, I cannot post my comment because the button to “Post as ppds” does not appear. If I load this same page in Opera without the VPN, then the button “Post as ppds” appears and I can post this very message.

It seems that the VPN is not rendering all buttons / controls on the page.

Is Opera doing anything to improve this?

    I use Opera Developer 39.0.2245.0 , 32 bit version, on Windows 7 Ultimate SP1.

    • Hi, thank you for the report. We will try to reproduce this issue. No luck so far :/

  • ppds

Out of curiosity, how did Opera size this service, in other words, how many concurrent users does it support? I anticipate that many people will turn to Opera with this cool feature, but afraid that it will die from its success as too many people try to use it.

  • Charlin Salazar Fontanilla

    I can’t watch anything on Netflix 🙁
    Error code: O7363-1260-00000048

    • Tedy Pascal

netflix block VPN conncetion. so yeah you cant watch it through VPN.

  • John

Latest update today – VPN list STILL missing and connection to server just hangs. Moreover, not even a single recognition of the issue from Opera despite multiple complaints.

    • Leonardo Gomes

As said, they are investigating the problem. It affects only a few percentage of the users and seems to not be that easy to reproduce.

BTW, some people reported that the issue was solved for them after the anti-virus has been disabled or changed.

  • Mathias

The Swedish program of MagineTV has stopped being sent via Opera VPN
from one day to another (I live in Switzerland). Before that, it worked
perfect. Do you have an explanation and a solution for this? Takk 🙂

    • Hi, please, post exact URL where it happened. Probably it is because we block Flash Plugin for privacy reasons when VPN is on.

  • Valery

Thank You, Opera! I always believed in You, Your browser is the best and most advanced! Thanks for the new features, everything works fine! Good Luck To You!

  • Natalie Om

Opera VPN just stopped working for me, now the pages just won’t load. It worked fine for a week 🙁

    • Me too. I installed it and tested it on both a Mac and Linux box. The Mac seems to work fine, but the LInux box keeps asking for a password…

  • Aries Truong

There is no VPN option in latest Opera 38 stable although there is fixed known issue about VPN in latest version 38.0.2220.29

    • Leonardo Gomes

Yes, it’s disabled by default outside developer builds for now. You can enable it on flags if you want.

      • Aries Truong

After I enabled in flags then VPN feature is only available in “New Private Windows” mode.

        • Vux777

VPN feature is still in development
in latest developer build O39, VPN works in normal windows
it will be officially available in stable in couple of months (if nothing changes)

‘am not havin’ a free VPN. here .!!
an’ many changes had been right here in this version .. facebook, an’ Tumblr is not available an’ Twitter is not Typin’ my password on.
‘am in deep mess .. What shoud I do .?
pages tell to see my connections an’ it’s good, or reloadin’ the pages .. or Checking the proxy and the firewall an’ it’s not selected to deselected either .
So I Tried to pack myself with VPN. but it’s not freely allowed for windows here ..
I even uninstalled Opera an’ Installed it again, but it’s not workin’ either .

    • tu.iga

Not sure which Opera’s installation you use, but the VPN is available in developer version (it will be in the stable one, but later). Take a look at the right column of this blog page and select a proper version of Opera Developer for you (Win, Mac or Linux).

      • Nihal Muhammed

I’ve Tried but it had a homepage for http://ar.hao123.com or something like that ’cause it’s a beta but not the speed dial homepage ..
Unfortunately that website did not contain how to remove this app. from so I aninstalled it .
        It mads me .!!

  • But when I use geolocation, in http://ipleak.net test, Opera is giving my real location, not VPN’s location!

    • ipleak show my proxy address… It just keeps changing ever three minutes, with an annoying popup for a password.

  • Yannic Wehner

If you would add the torrent client to opera again this would be perfect.

  • Leo King

    Hey Opera!
    Chromium engine – AdBlocker – Battery Saver – VPN… You’re gonna rock!!

Please bring 1-Download Manager 2-Torrent Client 3-Media Grabber
Yes, that’s what can make Opera a heart touching browser for everybody.

And please dont forget to focus on speed. Opera should load itself and web pages considerably faster than Chrome.

Another feature, I am afraid Opera might not like, but, people will like it without noticing consciously, is to remove that ‘O’ mark on the Menu button, on top right of the browser window. I apologize if it hurts you but Firefox had an orange button, which has replaced with Australis UI. And Chrome doesn’t has such logo mark at all. Honestly, Opera should not need to show or feel people to recognize itself by its logo mark on top of window, all that matters is it should be recognized by its interface.

    Thanks!

    Opera’s VPN Germany? Fail!

German TV recognizes and instantly blocks my attempt at watching their Euro Soccer Championship broadcasts using Opera’s German VPN address: “This program can only be watched in Germany and is not available from your country”. What good is a VPN supposedly located in a foreign country, when that country’s broadcasters can recognize it as U.S. based and then block it?

Any work around ideas? (I use 39.0.2248.0)

    • James Banks

I use cyberghost free vpn when watching stuff from Germany, still waiting on bugs getting fixed on opera

  • This is such a great idea! I only hope that in the future you add more countries (like France etc) but also that you find out a way to allow the VPN to work on Netflix

  • Stitch

The VPN hasnt worked for me for the last few days it worked like a charm before. I cant find any information as to its status, only other people with the same problem has anyone any information here?

  • Until today the problem with yellow sign isn’t fixed yet even on stable version of opera.. ah… Please…

  • Yan

This is the most exciting thing I experienced from a browser for a long time. Native VPN+ adblock + torrent would make this browser the ultimate machine! lol

But for now I’d go with the crowd and say it is buggy. I did DNS leaks too and it failed! Don’t get me wrong. If Opera manage to do this it may be a revolution, but they need more stable servers. And getting some requires money.

It seems to be more stable on my phone for some reason.

  • Sounds awesome if it just would work 🙂

I enabled VPN from flags and launched “new private window with VPN”, but it doesn’t work. Sniff :'(

ps. I’m using Win 7 portable version 38.0.2220.29.

    Off topic:
I was devoted Opera user in the past (stopped using Opera after version 12.7). And now it’s great to notice, that you guys at Opera have started to make really good progress with the browser again! It surely looks that I could hop on board with Opera yet again. Cheers!

  • I’ve just downloaded Opera about 20 mins ago (on Mac), but I can’t find out how to enable VPN? Any help would be much appreciated!

    • Vux777

first check did you download developer build or latest beta build (from today)

you can check it from Omenu>>about Opera

      • Hello, thank you for your reply. I realised I hadn’t downloaded the developer version, but have done since. I have ticked VPN enabled, however it’s been ‘connecting’ for about 15 minutes and my browser itself works fine if VPN is not enabled. Do you have any advice for how to overcome the constant ‘connecting’ problem please?

        • Vux777

          uhmmm not sure
on my machine, VPN works fine (dev and beta)

  • UPDATE on the Flashing VPN Icon/Proxy Password Prompt

After two days of using the OperaVPN, it seems that it goes bananas when I try to access SoundCloud or a new video starts on YouTube. On SoudCloud, this is chronic. On YouTube, the problem is intermittent.

  • Ali Nawaz

Dear sir please tell me that VPN facility is available in mobile application or not

    • Leonardo Gomes

      It’s not.

      • Ali Nawaz

in windows it is not free.

        • Leonardo Gomes

Yes, it is. You need at least Beta 39 to use it.

          • Ali Nawaz

give me link of that version in which vpn is free. i have 38.0

          • Markus Haspecker

In Beta 39 the activation button is still grayed out and the description has a “Comeing soon” in brackets behind it.

          • Leonardo Gomes

OK, so it’s still restricted to developer channel.

  • karpov mahazanuca

Please I was looking how to change the default plugin’s path for flash in my machine it takes /opt/google/chrome/PepperFlash besides I update and install inside /usr/lib/opera/plugins but I can’t find the way to change this.

  • Andy D

Can you please add UK VPN.

    • Thomas Smith

UK VPN for opera can be found here.

      • cyber

These are just VPNs, not Opera VPN virtual locations.

  • I try to install Opera 40 developer build, but Ad-Aware Antivirus instantly deletes clearkeycdm.dll, not stating other that it’s a threat (unspecified type), and the installer stalls because it requires that file.

  • Anthony MacKenzie

Little bit of a difference between a VPN service and Proxies as used here. For more information on how this works check out https://www.vpnsrus.com/proxies-vs-vpn-whats-difference/

    • Alain Gaston

      That’s a fair comparison.

  • Thank you 🙂

  • HoyesMiGente

Wait a minute. I thought the VPN access was free. I’m getting a link to SurfEasy when I open the menu and I don’t see a free option other than a trial. Which I don’t want to set up. Can anybody help me?

    • Leonardo Gomes

Download and install one of the builds listed on this post. Or a newer one in developer channel.

      • Azizjon Juraev

You mean to download latest opera browser?

        • Leonardo Gomes

You need at least Opera 39 to get the VPN. So you need to download a beta build or wait to 39 to reach Stable channel.

  • Chen Yu

I have used Zenmate for a quite a long time, but I believe the only issue that I experience is the limitation, that comes with servers and bandwidth. When you use a VPN for purpose like streaming, then speed is all you need. I continuously figure out to get a reliable option for China, but I assume this Opera Free VPN will also not work there.

  • Jack

On the one hand, it’s really great gimmick! The developers created the best version of browser which includes ad blocker with vpn! It’s really what people need nowadays. But at the same time I can’t believe in it, as it seems too gimmicky! I decided to try it for comparing with paid vpn I usually use. In my opinion the result disappointed me a little bit, as the connection speed was so slow and I couldn’t access sites which are usually restricted without vpn. On the whole, I can only give 3 points. Maybe I expected too much and I shouldn’t criticize it, but it better to pay and be confident in the results than wait something amazing from what is free. What should I recommend? Use only checked services like that

The VPN option has not “connected” since about 2 weeks after I downloaded the developer. There are no sites listed in the “virtual location” pulldown. I’m now on version 40.0.2280.0. As far as I can tell from other forums, this is a universal problem for all builds after the the one(2?) it was launched on. I realize it’s a “developer” version but if it’s promoted so much, then maybe it would be nice to see a post about when it will be back or a fix or something. I added the SurfEasy vpn extension on my laptop and phone (which given my limited understanding seems to be a “real” VPN versus the “proxy” folks are describing the OperaVPN as but I blew through the free data on that in a couple days. I just want some protection while in coffeeshops, etc – not looking to infiltrate Chinese Indy films.

  • Azizjon Juraev

So, does vpn in latest version work or not?

    • Leonardo Gomes

It works in latest Beta and Developer builds.

      • Azizjon Juraev

        thanks a lot brother

  • Paranam Kid

What on earth is going on ???????????
You describe this built-in “VPN” is better than traditional VPNs. Really?????
It has not been working for the past 3 days at least, and before that it was more iffy.
Is your objective to chase users away in frustration? You certainly seem to be working hard at it.

This is great but UK is missing in Virtual locations. It would be good to have in order to be able to watch iPlayer when travelling abroad.

Because the Olympics are still on NBC.

  • jay-bo

Hi, Is it possible to disable the suggested site tiles of previously visited websites in opera 38 ( under the ‘add a site’ icon ), In fact is there a way to remove the add a site icon altogether as it’s pretty naff, and I don’t have the option to hide the big + sign

  • Franco

hmmm..how about scaleable printing….have your folks look at Firefox code…it’s actually pretty easy…but frustrating when ‘one label doesn’t fit all”….

    • Leonardo Gomes

      This post is kinda old.

What is ‘scalable printing’? Something like the’ fit to paper width ‘ in Opera Presto?

  • Avalan

I dont see that option anywhere, just surfeasy vpn that u have to pay for. Nice move opera

    • Leonardo Gomes

Did you download and install one of the builds listed in this post?

  • Simon

Please, add this option to Opera browser portable version. Last night I decide to move from IE&Firefox&Chrome which I used for decades. And in so little time of using your browser I can already say, Opera is definitely the best, at least for me

  • dr.mody

I don’t see that option anywhere im using opera 38 Linux version

    • Leonardo Gomes

Are you using one of the builds listed in this post?

      • dr.mody

actually im using opera-38.0.2220.41-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz from Manjaro Linux repository .and as you see it comes as tar.xz package

      • dr.mody

Is it different from other builds listed above ?

        • Leonardo Gomes

VPN didn’t reach stable channel yet. You need to install a Beta or a Developer build.

          • cyber

Leonardo: when will VPN be added to the mobile version?

          • Leonardo Gomes

You will have to ask someone from Opera, preferably in the mobile team blog.

I know that there is a recently released VPN app for IOS.

          • cyber

I hope they scan this page, see my comment and reply. I am on Android.

  • Roksana Moezy

im living in the worst anti internet country in the whole world and universe im living in Islamic republic of iran and i am using opera mini mobile for many years this is the only software that i can read news with it thanks to opera team, and it would be great if opera brings this feature on windows desktop so we will be able to browse internet like anyone else, you know the worst part is not only many websites like youtube and facebook google+ twitter……ect are blocked here we have been banned from Nvidia and ATI because of sunctions. i cant even update my graphic card. i think if you opera wanna do something great add an option so the whole of system can pass the block . like avira antivirus. they recently added a free vpn to their antivirus and it unblocks the whole system and os but it has limitation one gig per mounth , but better than nothing , thanks opera i remember the day that i was using opera 9 desktop version and it was the only browser that had download manager with resume capabality i downloaded a MP4 64mb and it took 13 hours and opera was the only browser that could download the file for me

  • Dimitri

Using newest version of opera and i don’t get free vpn option…

    • alex

Opera VPN is not available for opera CLASSIC version on desktop.
Because it’s still a beta fonction, you need Opera Beta developer (link : http://www.opera.com/fr/computer/beta)

  • bimbo83

I am sure this has been asked before….
HOw can I set virtual location to UK? Is it available at all?

    • cyber

No, I think that it is not (yet?) available. I hope it will be soon. For the time being I see only USA, Canada, Germany, the Netherlands and Singapore

      • bimbo83

Thank you very much for your answer!

    • nick olsen

You need to use a VPN for UK. This will mask your ip to UK one. I use it to access UK Library in Netflix.

      • bimbo83

Many thanks but I hoped to use Free Opera browser VPN would work for UK. I will wait…

        • cyber

I am also waiting for this

    • Sandy Roberts

The best way to do is using vpn service it allows you to set virtual location to UK and it maintains your anonymity.

  • Tricia Bellasario

That’s undoubtedly a big step by Opera and it might be the only reason I will now switch from Chrome and Mozilla to Opera. But I have one major concern, “The Speed Test”. I can not simply doubt Opera’s credibility when it comes to keeping log and all, (or the recent Hola exploit) but is there anyone who have used Opera’s integrated VPN and is satisfied with the VPN speed?

    • Well, I am not quite sure about that myself. I have tested it a few times. Sometimes it works great and sometimes it’s pretty slow, but on an average, Opera is providing pretty decent service as a free VPN service provider. I have watched movies without buffering (the internet was smooth too) and web surfing is good too, but you will feel that reduction in speed. But the same is with a lot of VPN providers. Whatever VPN you opt for, your speed will get throttled a bit because of the encryption taking place between the tunnel. It is quite a fuss and a debate whether to use a free VPN in the first place or not, but Opera is a big name and I am sure that it won’t let anybody tarnish its reputation.

      • cyber

Yes, I really appreciate free Opera VPN. I hope that they’ll soon add the UK to the list of countries because when we travel abroad we can’t watch iPlayer, even if we have paid the licence in the UK.

        • Paul Rogers

Well, there are other free VPN services too which offer UK in their free versions, if that’s your only concern.
Just do a random search of Free VPNs on Google and you can find dozens of VPN offering UK server too. For starters, you can go through this list. I hope you’ll at least be able to watch iPlayer using these services.

          • cyber

Thanks Paul for this. I have already tried several free VPN services but they are all too limited to watch anything. The great advantage of Opera is that it is not.

          • Paul Rogers

Well, I haven’t used Opera yet, but since the hype is too much I have got to use it now! 🙂

    • Baron Indigo

ya tested it. mine ran about 15-20 mbit off 75 mbit connect. Ignore all that, daily use is fast enough and instant automatic VPN is awesome, turn off in one click if wish [you wont]
No leaks that I could tell and ip detects think in TX or FL [you will love that]

  • Gizme On

Nice Information. We are android development company from Newyork. We provides any type of software apps….

  • John Adam

That is great news Free VPN 🙂
Currently I am using PureVPN for my business online security.
I definitely will check opera VPN.

  • Johnny Andersson

Great with both VPN and Adblocker in the webreader. Perfect move by Opera and it will attract many new users. Opera is a very nice webreader, I also use Opera Mini on my Mobil and Tablet.

Anybody knows VPN update and install date yet?

    • cyber

Yes, it would be good to have free VPN on the mobile app as well

  • Tony

I run a website and I have a customer using this feature. Couple notes:

1: Half the time while connecting to our site her true IP shows up. This service does not seem to be working correctly. Seems that if half her traffic reflects her true IP, this tool is not doing it’s job.

2: The other half seems to be a plethora of different proxy servers owned by opera. This has caused out auto-lock-out feature to be tripped because our security does not like log-ins from a ton of IP addresses in a short period of time. IP addresses seem to be changing from one minute to the next, with some traffic coming from two or three IP addresses within seconds of each other.

  • Baron Indigo

Android Version or will this one work???

Oh? That option is greyed out and says “coming soon” …

    • Paul Whitford

      works for me

      • Ron van Middendorp

Means you installed the devel version and not the official release… To figure that out I had to search and read another article, so this article is not complete. Oh well, what is…

    • Leonardo Gomes

have you installed the build listed on this post?

      • Ron van Middendorp

I now have the devel version installed, I missed that “Download Opera 38 developer…” part. Obviously one would expect that in the part that says “To activate it…”

        Thanks.

  • Paul Whitford

does this VPN also work when using other apps such as torrent apps? I realise it only works when opera is open but if I minimise opera and open utorrent, is utorrent covered by it?

    • Leonardo Gomes

Nope, it works only in Opera.

        Thanks champ

  • Baron Indigo

Will this work on opera tv?

  • davefromsherwood

It occurs to me that if I use Opera VPN to download a torrent, that’s private but if I use uTorrent to take that and download the actual file, then that’s still not private because uTorrent is a separate program. Am I understanding this correctly?

    • Leonardo Gomes

Yes, the VPN only works inside Opera.

  • Shuaiba Ahammed

Thanks for sharing the tips. I will try it out immediately! laptop repair Asheboro

  • Dakiro

  • Johannes Rohrauer

The VPN feauture works great in my region (Greece). I would definitely like to see it in the stable version plus a built-in flash player so to avoid to download an external flash player from adobe which many sites require.

I’m a 20-something who’s currently paying for VPN service (annual). If Opera’s VPN doesn’t keep any logs and has an automatic disconnect function whenever the VPN fails, and the speed hit’s not terrible, and it seems there is no conflict of interested between consumer anonymity AND data collection (back doors, relationship with powerful other-interests groups like a government, I’ll cancel my subscription AND use Opera.

What is the commitment of Opera’s new owners to refrain from keybridging for users of the Opera VPN?

    https://nakedsecurity.sophos.com/2013/01/08/the-turktrust-ssl-certificate-fiasco-what-happened-and-what-happens-next/

    • Sander Kamp

One would assume Opera has implemented some form of security into their browser (much like Google did with Chrome).

      • Charlie

Opera is now a Chinese-owned company, and these VPN taps will be placed at five different datacenters around the world.

What is to stop Opera’s owners from extracting a plaintext log of these sessions at the taps through “keybridging?”

At the very least, Opera should make loud promises not to do so. Then they should work to make us believe them.

This will be hard to do, judging what I have seen with Opera Mini on Jellybean.

        • Sander Kamp

‘At the very least, Opera should make loud promises not to do so. Then they should work to make us believe them.’

          This bit I love.

To be fair, if the data isn’t encrypted in some form or another, someone with access to that data would know everything that’s going on. But then again, this goes for every VPN, no, every server in the world.

What exactly do you mean by ‘Keybridging’?

          • Charlie

Here is the description from the original link that I posted:
            _____

It’s easy to scan HTTP traffic by using a proxy, but HTTPS traffic is harder to look inside, since the content is supposed to be encrypted end-to-end.

The usual approach is to perform a Man in The Middle (MiTM) attack on your own traffic. The marketing names for this are keybridging or decrypt-recrypt, but it’s really just a MiTM.

You split a user’s SSL connection into two parts, creating two SSL sessions – one from browser to proxy and the other from proxy to the final destination.

You decrypt inside the proxy, examine the contents, and then re-encrypt for the rest of the journey.

→ Keybridging isn’t an attack if you do it on your own company’s outbound traffic, but you ought to let your users know. It violates the sanctity of the end-to-end encryption you expect in an SSL connection.

The operational pain with keybridging is that your users get a certificate warning every time they make a secure connection to a new site. That’s because their SSL connections terminate at your proxy, not at the real sites they intended to visit.

The usual way around this is to create your own private root certificate, upload it to your keybridging proxy, and let the proxy automatically generate, sign and supply placeholder certificates to your own users.

By adding your private root certificate to all the computers inside your network, you suppress the certificate warnings, because your own browsers trust your own proxy as a CA. That means your browsers quietly tolerate the placeholder certificates generated by the proxy.

It’s somewhat impure and ugly, but it’s practical, and it works.

  • I can think

weird, I had a question about logging into servers such as Wikipedia and what my ip address would like to them and other instituions such as banks and would banks and Comcast and others let you log on over opera vpn. I also pointed out, that I had explorer and opera open at the same time and that opera did not block ads as well as the adblocker for explorer. Simply commenting and asking legitimate questions. My post and questions were deleted when I checked back an hour later to see if there was a response. I am very much searching for answers to these legitimate questions.
I do note that opera, when task manager is open uses, at least as much computer resources as does explorer. You just have to look a little deeper in task manager. Opera opens in 4 different places in task manager.
Not sure why my comments and questions were deleted.
This is a discussion forum and I had real questions to which I was seeking answers.
    Peace to the moderators.

  • Derf Montgomery

So does this free VPN only run when the browser is open, or does it run independent?

    • Leonardo Gomes

      It works only inside Opera.

      • Derf Montgomery

Not very useful then. Oh well.

        • Myles

mega useful if you know what you are doing….

          • Derf Montgomery

A VPN that only works in this one specific browser and only when it’s open is not “mega useful”. If it actually worked for the entire computer, not just websites you go to in that browser, that would be useful.

Unless you’re a terrorist who doesn’t want to be tracked while they search online for bomb making materials, this is a useless gimmick.

          • Leonardo Gomes

If you are living in certain places in the world, a VPN may be the only way to access the (real) web.

          • Myles

You are someone else who doesn’t know what theyre doing…. This is solely an alternative to hide my ass et al. Not a replacement for p2ptp or anything else. If you buy a hammer do you complain it’s not mega useful because it doesn’t help you to swim? If you know what you’re doing with it it’s a very useful and versatile object.

          • Vux777

            so…
Opera browser should provide free VPN for all other browsers and apps out there ?
            Chrome, Firefox, Edge…

            this is a browser feature!!!
not dedicated (and paid) VPN service
and logically it works only in this browser

there is a Opera MAX, but that’s completely different story/platform

  • Philo Den

I have run Opera browser through most of the most reliable tests for IP and leak and through WebRtc leak tests and it passed with flying colors! Other browsers may work sometimes but Opera is the most reliable for keeping your ID secure.

Not bad. Not complaining about it at all. Just once exception though. I tried downloading it for my desktop at the house. It will download the latest version with the free VPN for my laptop, however it won´t do it for my desktop. Not that big of a deal though since I´m mainly on my laptop. I can still use ZenMate for my desktop.

What would be even better would be if Opera would launch it´s own built in antivirus.

What is the current status of VPN support? My version now only shows Netherlands as an option and it never connects.. what happened to the other locations ?

I’ve downloaded Opera Mobile VPN to my phone and that does support other locations – I would have assumed the same underlying service is being used for both the vpn app and Opera desktop.

As it stands, VPN on Desktop Opera is effectively broken and of no use

  • Katherina

Opera has done a great job with their browser integrated VPN but they should release a paid version with more options and with better optimization, https://vpntrends.com it would be healthy competition and other providers would have to improve their services to remain relevant.

What they mean is that the opera vpn and the opera browser for android are two separate apps. There isn’t an opera browser for android with a built-in vpn client yet.

  • Great opera, love it

Just reading some of the drivel underneath, it works flawlessly, incredibly fast I’ve just nuked Chrome don’t really trust Google. I’ve tried countless VPN providers (NordVPN, ViPrVPN; My personal Internet ((PIA)), ExpressVPN) total and absolute junk, I tried them because I love the idea of “some” anonymity (won’t stop the scumbags at NSA from tracking you) but this built in VPN works beautifully, just did several DNS leak tests and according to them I’m in another country, this is the best browser I’ve ever tried and I’ve tried quite a few, if I want to watch NRK on my Chromecast I’ll just switch off the app on my mobile, simple!

  • we’re waiting for that for a very long time! :)))

  • I think built in VPN should be a standard for every browsers! Wondering why this is not in every browser already. Thumb up for Opera now!

  • I cant connect opera vpn on kodi, but thanks to these kodi vpns.
