Thanks for this Opera 39 build 2256.42 RC release !

This has been fast and furious week for Opera 39 Beta development leading quickly to a Opera 39 Stable which is much awaited and anticipated

  • Daivy Merlijs

Is the bug where the ad blocker does not block YouTube ads has been resolved ?

    • Aneta Reluga

If you mean the one where it was impossible also to skip the ad, it’s resolved in the developer stream but not ported to 39 yet.

      • Daivy Merlijs

Yes, it’s that one. What about the 39 version?

        • Aneta Reluga

Frankly, I have no idea. I just asked whether it’s going to be backported and waiting for the response.

          • Daivy Merlijs

            Thank you !

          • Aneta Reluga

Back to the question – the fix should be available to this version too.

          • Daivy Merlijs

            Nice !

    • Leonardo Gomes

      Check the changelog.

Anyway, i guess that there will never be an ad-blocker that blocks 100% of the ads. Some will be able to bypass it.

      • Daivy Merlijs

There is no problèmes with Ad-Block Plus!

      • Daivy Merlijs

Hi Opera Devs. I love you work in Opera Browser, but I would like to know if in the future we will have an option to see accepable ads, non-intruse ads, when Ad Blocker is enabled. As a normal user a think the option for Inspect Elements and other dev-like stuff, should be hidden by default in context menu. I would like to have a page to see stats about data saving from Opera Turbo as well.

    • Aneta Reluga

Regarding acceptable ads – it is already implemented; do you encounter issues with it?
As for hiding advanced options from the context menu, I’m sorry, but it seems to be a good solution in the state it is now, but nevertheless thanks for your opinion.
And regarding Turbo stats, I’d have to ask around if it would be possible to implement. Thank you.

      • Hetai-Na

Here the native adblocker blocks all ads, inclusive acceptable ads, for example in DDG (https://duckduckgo.com/?q=travel&t=hd&ia=meanings) The counter shows 0, but the ads are still blocked.

        • Aneta Reluga

I could confirm the DDG issue, thanks.

          • Hetai-Na

It happens all around the web. Thank you Aneta for the support. Hope it will be fixed soon.

          • Aneta Reluga

FYI, it’s now internally logged as DNA-56222

      • Nekomajin43

How about a combined Turbo/VPN icon in the address bar?

When none of them is used, the popup should show two switches (Turbo and VPN), and a “learn more” link, which points to a Help page that details the differences between the two features. (Or it could be explained in place with a short text or infographics.)

When one of them is used, the popup should show the statistics of the feature and a turn off switch.

        • Aneta Reluga

That’s a precise suggestion. I’ll record it as such, but no promises (particularly at this stage).

          • Nekomajin43

It is very inconsistent now. You can rach the VPN from the address bar, but the Turbo only from the menu. And since the two features are somewhat similar, but exclude each other from using, it would be a logical solution.

          • Aneta Reluga

            It’s DNA-56243 now.

  • rocy76

When I originally started using Opera Beta (during release 38) webdings would display properly in my gmail. But I have noticed that at some point early in release 39 the webding characters stopped displaying…More Specifically, I have a symbol we use as part of our email signature (gmail) and it now displays as a capital “P” instead of the webdings font symbol, which is supposed to show as a picture of a tree with river, to represent “save the trees” or something. Currently Internet Explorer is the only browser that displays Webdings properly. If this could be fixed that would be awesome…

    • Aneta Reluga

Can you please indicate your operating system? Also, could you provide a screenshot (with all the sensitive data greyed out of course) and the unicode symbol you are using there (number)? Thanks in advance.

      • rocy76

I am using win 7 pro. How do I post a screen shot? I will try to find the unciode symbol…

        • rocy76

If you open microsoft word…then select “wedings” font and type a capital P, you will see the symbol, I hope this helps…

          • Aneta Reluga

Yes, thanks, I got the character. Looks like there’s some issue with showing it, but I still need to know where exactly (e.g. if the signature is taken from some external source? This is weird to be honest)

          • rocy76

            http://postimg.org/gallery/18foxmx8i/
There are two images here (hopefully this will work). They are both a screen capture showing the email signature within Gmail Settings. One shows how it looks in Internet Explorer and the other how it looks in Opera. I hope this helps, thanks again…

          • Aneta Reluga

Thanks a lot. We’ll investigate. And FYI it’s internally DNA-56241 now.

        • Aneta Reluga

As for the screenshot, people around here usually use one of the available free image posting services. I would prefer to avoid indicating any preference though… Thanks!

  • iPristy

VPN it’s not working on Linux it needs i little bit of work to get it to work.
    Linux Mint 18

  • Hetai-Na

Do you have plans to integrate notifications in Windows 10 Action Center?

    • Aneta Reluga

Not until now; I logged a suggestion as DNA-56250

    hi,
opera looks superb with the add blocker, power saver and especially vpn and video pop-out, but there are still issues:
1.*vpn: uk is missing, which is a huge drawback. it is also very slow. looking videos is not possible. when will uk be added?
2.*video pop-out: fantastic feature, but very resource hungry. is that normal? Also subtitles in youtube do not appear?
    I miss two things though:
3.*native split panes (like vivaldi). that would be a killer feature. most screens are wide enough, so you can have one half for viewing email or facebook, and the other half for regular browsing. there is an extension that tries this but it does not work well. can you integrate this please? That would make vivaldi obsolete.
4.*save page as app (like google chrome), with its own icon, and without tabs/address bar
thanks for making opera the best browser.

    • Kornelia

      Thank you for your feedback:
      1. VPN feature is still under development, more countries will come
      2. It could be some specific subtitles issue, could you send me an example of video where subtitles are not shown in pop-out window?
3,4. I can add those as suggestions in our database but no promises here 🙂

      • pee

        hi, as requested:
        https://youtu.be/IESYMFtLIis
click on the subtitles button of video above
the pop-out does not show the subtites.
why does the video pop-out use so much cpu resources?
I love the feature, but the high cpu usage keeps me from using it

        • Leonardo Gomes

I can confirm the issue with subtitles, at least on that video. Happens also on Developer 40.

          • pee

that video is an ordinary youtube video, so i expect it does that for all youtube videos with embedded subtitles

        • Leonardo Gomes

Regarding CPU usage, video pop-out seems to use the same amount of the ‘parent video’.

          • pee

hi, i disagree 🙂 opera uses much more cpu than firefox, and with pop-out even more. I did some tests (i have screenshots of these tests with taskmanager on if you want them)
            firefox: 25% cpu, no pop-out
            opera: 40% cpu, without pop-out
opera: 60% cpu, with pop-out (only pop out visible)
this makes opera video (with battery saver off) very sluggisch and hardly usable for me, while firefox runs very smoothly
Ca something be done to this? thanks!!!

          • Leonardo Gomes

Just tested here and cpu usage peak, including all runniung programs, with Opera was 16% while with Firefox it was 34% in a I5 processor, both running the same video from Youtube.

Opera with video pop-out lead to CPU usage peak of 50%.

The video used vp9 codec that is not hardware accelerated. With a h264/avc video the usage of cpu was 10% at most.

          • pee

I tested on an acer iconia hybrid tablet pc with atom Z2670 processor and a sony vaio with an amd E-350 processor. Firefox uses just one process for all its tabs/functions, but opera uses many processes for its tabs and other functions.

Did you add up cpu usages for all opera processes (as I did), or did you just use the ones with the videos?
I can show you pics of the benchmarks if you are interested.

But anyway, from your figures we can see that the video pop out uses much more resources. You agree?

          • Leonardo Gomes

Checking the CPU usage only for the process related to the video i get the following, according to Opera’s task manager:

            – A peak of 22% of CPU usage without video pop-out
            – A peak of 19% of CPU usage with video pop-out
            – A peak of 23% of general CPU usage according to Windows’ task manager without video pop-out
            – A peak of 40% of general CPU usage with video pop-out

Based only on those data i would say that video pop-out uses the sane amount of data of the regular video.

However, i also noticed that average general CPU usage is less that 10% without video pop-out and more than 30% with video pop-out.

So i guess i can say that video pop-out uses CPU a lot.

Anyway, i guess that Opera and other modern browsers and softwares may not be that very friendly with ‘low power’ CPUs.

          • pee

yes, but most tablet-like hybrids have lower specs, and video with other browsers like firefox (even with video pop out extension) goes smoother.

Anyway if opera dev team can reduce the video pop out cpu usage, that will be beneficial for all users.

Thanks a lot for your tests and feedback!

Major issue: VPN automatically makes PayPal block your account.

    https://forums.opera.com/discussion/1874120/vpn-automatically-makes-paypal-block-your-account

    • Kornelia

I reported your issue to our database. Thanks.

      • David_Gould

        Thank you, Kornelia. 🙂

        Re: NoName’s concern.

Obviously, VPN’s configuration needs user control. Unless Opera Software establish security credentials, it’s better to use TOR where you need proper privacy.

Using PayPal destroys your anonymity anyway.

I do see his point though that it would be good to know when you switch from a tab working through VPN to one accessing the net directly, and vice versa (whether Opera excludes a site or the user does). I would make the VPN button flash in this case.

    • NoName

Excluding sites from VPN sounds like a very bad solution to this problem. Then you never know when you are actually using a VPN or not.

If anything, it should rather be blocked instead.

  • Ariane Lu

Opera download page without HTTPS is blocked in China.

  • jarzyna

    What about Opera Developer?

    • Aneta Reluga

What exactly would you like to know?

      • jarzyna

New Heap Compaction memory management already in Opera Dev version?

  • Artem

    Issues with canvas still reproduced:
    1) https://yandex.com/maps/
    2) Switch to other tab for few sec.
    3) Switch back to maps and drag to start map redrawing
Actual: canvas with map is gone
This issue is pretty old (~5 releases), but not fixed yet. Problem is related to any site with canvas element (http://www.chartjs.org/docs/#radar-chart-example-usage)

    • Aneta Reluga

I’m sorry but I’m unable to reproduce on Windows 7 nor Windows 10. On both dragging the map and zooming the map, I’m getting it correctly refreshed, with HW acceleration both enabled and disabled.
Does it happen to you also on clean profile, and with acceleration disabled? Thanks.

    • NoName

What graphic card do you use?

      • Artem

        Windows 10 64-bit
        Intel HD Graphics 4600
        NVIDIA GeForce GT 740M

        Chrome doesn’t have this issue

        • trojanobelix

          Agree on
          Windows 7 64-bit
          Intel HD Graphics 4000

      • Artem

I tried to switch graphics card, and find out that issue reproduced only on integrated card (Intel HD Graphics 4600).
With NVIDIA GeForce GT 740M canvas redrawing works OK

        • NoName

HD 4600 is fairly new and should not have these problems.
Have you made sure to update the drivers?
Intel usually offers newer ones than those from Windows Update.

It it still don’t work, it could be the integrated graphics or your system memory that i faulty.

          • Artem

Issue is still reproduced after updating the driver directly from intel site.
            Video with the bug: https://s32.postimg.org/e3cmn5r8l/bug.gif
In case there are any hardware/driver problems, why chrome doesn’t have this issue?

          • Aneta Reluga

            That’s a good question.
The real problem is that as long as we are unable to reproduce locally, the developers will have a hard time trying to fix something like this. :/
Does the developer tools console say anything meaningful about the page? Can you check?

          • Artem

Nope. There are no errors related to canvas, only to adblock. Any attempts to draw something on canvas via canvas.getContext(“2d”).fillRect did nothing, the canvas still stayed blank. But, when I converted canvas to image via canvas.toDataURL, the image had proper look with previously drawn rectangles.
I also checked windows event log and didn’t found anything related the issue.
I think virtual box with remote access to you also doesn’t help because box will use not Intel driver, but VirtualBox graphics adapter.

You can ask the extension authors to create one for Opera.

  • sgrandin

Contempt for users = still providing no direct link or button for the user to get to their start page (traditionally called Home page) when the Speed Dial is the only tab open.

  • Alexander

When you want to see preview in youtube video (putting cursor further on video time-line) only black window displayed instead of video preview.

    • Leonardo Gomes

What OS? Works here in Windows 10.

    • Hetai-Na

The video does not even play here, but in Edge it is Ok.

    • Leonardo Gomes

What OS? I had no problem here in Windows 10 ver. 1607 build 14393.

      • Vux777

        win10…but mine is 1511

        • Leonardo Gomes

Have you tried with hardware acceleration disabled?

          • Vux777

same problem with or without hwa
did you tried to let video plays for a while (like 10 sec and more)
            and then tried scrolling?

because at very start (of video playing), there is no problems…but later at some point page becomes almost unresponsive

          • Leonardo Gomes

Tried that and still no problems with scrolling.

  • siamak

    Hi
for me it just 2 more things missing from opera 12.x to satisfy me to migrate to New opera
    1. Nickname for bookmarks
2.toggle panel for extention sidebar —–> Very Important
Can I exept this two any soon? please any of Devs reply me, Thanks.

    • Harry

I agree. I want a toggle “switch” for the sidebar. The present sidebar is way too wide.

      • Aneta Reluga

Please clarify: Menu -> Extensions -> Sidebar (also accessible by the shortcut: Ctrl+Shift+S on Win) is not enough and both of you would like some sort of visible quick toggle?
Then I’m afraid that won’t happen. We want to keep the UI as clean as possible, and the solution with the menu access and/or the shortcut is optimal.

        • Harry

Aneta … Ctrl+Shift+S is not acceptable. It requires two hands (at least for me, as a Senior).

I am disappointed to hear that a toggle will not happen.

I will continue to use Firefox as my primary browser.

          • L33t4opera

Hi, you can go to Settings > Browser > Configure shortcuts (opera:settings/configureCommands) > Show sidebar, and re-bind it to eg. F4.

      • Marko Koivuniemi

Could that be achieved by simple extension which does just those operations Aneta mentioned? If that extension could be ordered always on first on the list. (Oh you can drag’n’drop panel items to arrange). It could be piece of cake for example @Vux777:disqus?

        • Vux777

          uhmm, sry but no
Extensions can’t open/close another sidebar(!) extension.
Sidebar extensions must be invoked by click on the sidebar button (or with keyboard shortcut, but only if sidebar stripe is already active). Even with messaging system between extension, there’s no way to open sidebar panel.
          ————————————–
And additionally, sidebar stripe (buttons list) can’t be toggled by another extension. Sidebar open/close actions are possible only trough O-menu or keyboard shortcut.
So, if you were referring to something like one of mine extensions (quickieZoom, with red vertical button on the left edge of the browser) to open close some (or all) sidebar extensions…. sry, that’s not possible
That vertical sidebar button, like in old Opera Presto, must be implemented by Opera developers

          • Marko Koivuniemi

Thanks for the answer, I learn something new.

  • Arthur Fong III

Does/will the Google Cast extension (with Download Chrome Extension) work in Opera 39? I’m having trouble connecting to my Chromecast.

There again missing extension icons. Again and again and again…

Dear Opera, how many years will it take to solve this issue????

    • Aneta Reluga

This beta went stable lately. Can you please check if the issue is present in stable (would be grateful if you could provide more details) – or, if you prefer, can you please wait a bit for the next beta and check there? Thanks.

      • Hindu Papanreu

        Dear Aneta.

Yes, it still exists in new Opera as well. When we start a new private window from jumplist on taskbar, extension icons doesn’t show (yes, they all allowed to work in private window and they also work very well but just cannot see extension buttons).

Here what I see if I start a new private window from jumplist.

The change log, and the announcement: Opera 40 beta with RSS feeds.

  • Shion

ADblock features aren’t complete just yet. With some subscriptions added from uBlock list I found some sites being broken (essential css and js files are blocked). Opera has no user-friendly way of finding which custom subscription does that. But even if you find the rule – your only option is to remove the subscription. You can’t comment the bad rule out or add an exception to url. And that is stupid.

  • Wizardling

The speed Dial extensions are bugged in Opera 39.0 in OS X 10.11.6, with their content exceeding the space available and being cut off at the bottom of each dial.

In Opera 39 after restart all empty even pinned tabs are not restored, in 38 it was perfect. I had the last tab always pinned and empty and thus on reload all my pinned tabs were not preloaded until I touch them. Maybe is there any option for that?
