Today’s release brings good news for all those who were unable to enter the Youtube full screen mode when Windows DPI was set to more than 100%. The issue is fixed now with DNA-55464 – please update to the newest version of Opera developer and try for yourselves!

Several stability and user interface fixes have also been applied, which should improve your browsing experience. Most of the easily noticed fixes are related to VPN and personal news. Inquisitive users should also notice something interesting in flags; to spice up your curiosity I can only add that it is related to something you’ve been asking for quite some time. Happy discovering! 🙂

In things related, Chromium also has been updated, this time to the 53.0.2767.4 version.

Known issues

We are unable to release the experimental Windows x64 version today. We apologize for the inconvenience and would like to ask for a bit of patience.

The new gimmick in flags – I can’t find it. So I think it’s nothing I have been asking for. The download page is still the same and there is also no shortcut vor VPN. Maybe someone else will find out what is new.

    Dear devs,
Thak you for your hard work! I have 2-3 requests, however.

    1. Please add in context menu the possibility to open the side panel. This will decrease the mouse moves & clicks

    2. Another possibility is the side panel to be toggled

    3. PLEASE add the possibility bookmarks to be extracted/saved as a HTML file. This is mindless to use additional extention! For example I will make diffrent bookmarks and after so will share them with friends.

    • Aneta Reluga

      Thank you for your feedback.
As for 1) and 2) – let me clarify: do you mean that you would like to have the (togglable) access to the start page side panel on the side of the regular page?
As for 3) – I’ll forward your idea.

      • BlB

        Hello again,
well I meant something similar to the access of side panel of old opera 12.x OR as a side panel of WPS Ofiice under Linux.
If I have an access as you sugest (only to the start page side panel) this will be a bit unconfortable since always have to open ne tab to open side panel.
Also the fastest (easiest for implemention from you ) way will be to open side panel through context menu.

        Thank you for your understanding!

      • BlB

My apologises for the addition but this will be even better if I have a possibility to extract/save ONLY CHOOSEN BY ME bookmarks.

  • helsten2

Automatic update has not worked for me for the last two updates. Looks like the new version is downloading and installing, but when Opera restarts it is still the old version. After that it will hang (forever?) in “Checking for updates …”

Guys, any comment about this? http://i.imgur.com/be3Ttku.png

    • L33t4opera

Hi Nekomajin43, it seems to be “false positive. It’s just non signed file on our end, mistake introduced with recent change in the packaging system. File has been verified virus free” – the source link.

      • Nekomajin43

Thank you all. It was a question on the hungarian fan page.

    • Leonardo Gomes

There was a comment already in a previous post. It’s a false positive.

    • Aneta Reluga

      It’s a false positive, (un)fortunately.
Edit: Unfortunately because it slipped through; fortunately, because it poses no risk.

    • BK

EHM.. old build? Current one should have it fixed.

  • firuz_u7

I hope it is for AdBlock Opera upgrade option to block ads on the page manually

    • BK

There are no plans to introduce that for the time being. We are working on VPN, Personal News upgrades, Battery mode enchancements and similar, see previous dev post.

      • firuz_u7

thanks for the clear explanation , I hope in Opera 41 or 42 , this function will be implemented

  • s fauske

    where is x64 installer?

    • Alex Wazovskiy

      From the blog entry:

“We are unable to release the experimental Windows x64 version today. We apologize for the inconvenience and would like to ask for a bit of patience.”

      • s fauske

        Ok. Thanks for reply

  • L33t4opera

Hi Aneta, thanks for the new build, and fixes 😉

    New flags:
    – opera:flags#copy-browserjs-from-package
Enables copying browser.js from package on first run.

    – opera:flags#rss-in-personal-news
Enables custom news feed support in personal news.

    – opera:flags#speed-dial-suggestions
Shows Speed Dial suggestions on the start page.

    Removed flags: #country-dependent-default-theme, #start-page-web-ui-components, and #web-ui-native-context-menus.

    • patkoscsaba

I found the RSS feed flag but I can’t seem to find how to add an RSS feed to my personal news. Any hints?

      • Vux777

        not working yet
they just started to implement it

        • patkoscsaba

Not even if I put the RSS address in some kind of configuration file? I expected at least basic/hackish functionality with the new flag. Otherwise there is no reason to put the flag there publicly.

          • Nekomajin43

There is. Flags exist to disable features for developers to avoid interrupting each others work. We may not see anything on the GUI, but there can be working code in the background.

          • Vux777

not that I know off… sry

      • Henrik Qvigstad

Hi, the flag #rss-in-personal-news exists, but does not do anything, yet. We are working hard on including some functionality in the next dev release (week 27).

        • patkoscsaba

          Thanks.

  • Ralf Brinkmann

I have still the problem, that a shared video in Facebook abrupt stops playing after one minute (lenght 10:22).

    • Kai Ockendorf

I have the same problem with some videos on chip.de!

  • Steve Camidge

Is there a way to prevent Opera from retrieving the news feeds for those of us who do not want them and are on low bandwidth?

Same question for Opera Mini on IOS

    • rblanca

      +1

    • ThanhLiem

disable it in Opera://flags or uncheck the box ” news” from setting button in the start page (top-right corner)

      • Steve Camidge

Thank you. I was not sure if it would prevent loading or just prevent displaying.

  • tarkus

Strange thing! I have the 64 bit version installed (along with the 32 bit) – my default browser is Opera Developer 64 bit. Although you say you haven’t released OX64 40.0.2273.0 yet, my installation was updated to this exact build (i.e. in C:Program FilesOpera developer and not C:Program Files (x86)Opera developer)!

    • Aneta Reluga

Ok, this left me puzzled. We have to investigate. Thanks.

      • tarkus
        • Aneta Reluga

Thanks. Definitely I could not reproduce with Windows 7 – we’ll try on Win10 then. Just to clarify: both installations are ‘all users’ type?

        • Leonardo Gomes

This is the 32 bits version.

    • Der Herr Nick

      Same thing here…

    • Leonardo Gomes

Have you ever installed or updated Opera by running the installer?
It doesn’t differentiate between c:program files and c:program files (x86) and will always use the latest used directory.

So, if you run the installer for the 64 bits version and then run the one for the 32 bits, you will be just installing itit in the same place.

      • Ralf Brinkmann

That’s true and it’s exactely what I want. As long, as the 64 bit is not available. For Windows it doesn’t matter, the program runs.

  • Gordon Freeman

Thank you for the Youtube full screen mode fix !

  • Cryio

Question: Using Opera v38 right now. And the repainting issue when snapping a new window is still here. It’s been there since Windows 10 launched. Will it be fixed in version 40?

What I am talking about: Make a new opera window. Snapping to half the screen on Windows 10. The window won’t refresh its content unless you manually adjust the window size. Only then will the window repaint properly.

As I’ve said, this has been an issue since Windows 10 launched.

  • Henk

So the personal RSS feed for news isn’t actually working at the moment?

    • Leonardo Gomes

      That’s it.

    • Henrik Qvigstad

Hi, the flag #rss-in-personal-news exists, but does not do anything, yet. We are working hard on including some functionality in the next dev release (week 27), hopefully.

  • taneli

Well, not sure if this is something new from youtube or from this new Opera Dev, but when i leave an hour long video on youtube playing in the background, switch to another tab, and switch to another program, the page in youtube, which i had playing in the background, refreshes and starts from the beginning after few minutes. This just started happening today after the new O-dev.

  • Dark Magician

Is YT bug getting fixed in current stable and Chromium update to .106?

    • Aneta Reluga

Yes, the upcoming stable update should have this fix.

  • Gutza G

Do we have to wait until O40 to get the Youtube fix? I’ve been having this problem for a time now. I don’t want to wait 2 more months for this fix. Thanks

    • Aneta Reluga

This fix is planned to be backported to both beta and stable, meaning that it is coming soon, along with the updates of the respective streams.

      • Gutza G

        Great!

  • Szymon Nowak

After updating to this version I’m getting “unauthorized access” or 403 on every page when using VPN. Anyone has similar issue?

    • Aneta Reluga

      Thanks, logged as DNA-55557

      • Szymon Nowak

Opera bug tracker is still not available to everyone? There’s no way for me to follow progress on this issue?

        • Leonardo Gomes

You can check the changelog to see when a issue have been fixed.

  • John Doe

    1. I’m getting VPN issues.
    2. Windows DPI and fonts: Let’s talk about font rendering. Font rendering in Windows OS (especially Windows 10, since they dropped previous RGB-mode cleartype and are oriented on high DPI displays) is horrible. My eyes start to bleed when I turn to Opera (and/or Chrome) in Windows OS, especially after working for some time in MacOs and Linux. Can something be done about it?

    • Leonardo Gomes

      1) Those being….?

      2) How high? I use 125% dpi and fonts seem ok for me.

      • John Doe

        1. “Unauthorized access.” on everything, already seems to be logged as DNA-55557
        2. Any non 100% DPI, actually. I have got a 32″ 1440p display and I had to hack/patch MacType (freetype font renderer implementation for winnt) for directwrite support to make fonts look acceptable.

  • SoniC

Anyone is able to help me ? Since at least three or four releases I’ve got an infinite “Connecting” when turning VPN On.
I don’t want to reinstall opera because I have too many settings… I would like to “just” clean the VPN settings and start with it fresh…. so I can use it for Youtube and this s***y geoblocking in Germany….

W 8.1 x64, using/upgrading Opera Dev since…. forever… In first two or three releases after announcing VPN it has worked without probs….
Now I am not able to (even) select the location… stays in infinite connecting-loop.

Thanks for anyone in advance for any help.

  • siamak

    Hi
Any plan to add Nickname for Bookmarks?

  • vertebranes

    VPN: connecting issues
yesterday and this morning it’s not possible to connect to german server:
    private window IPs 146.0.229.29 / 81.7.14.241 / 81.7.16.152 (no connection)
normal window (connecting, sometimes) IP e.g. 185.108.219.163
and yesterday sometimes connecting-problems with server NL.
    ?!?

  • I cannot load any pages using Opera for Developers. I get “unauthorized access”…

    • Ralf Brinkmann

With VPN on? Switch it off.

  • Sergey Gershovich

Broken markup at http://finmarket.ru through Opera Turbo
(Opera 40.0.2273.0 – Fresh install without any addons)

  • Vladimir

Add GAMES(NEWS Recomended) in UKRAINIAN version Opera !!!!

    • Vlad Violenty

      use Russian version
When Opera developers add RSS to browser, you can add games source of news

      • Vladimir

In ukrainian version Opera no work!!

        • Vlad Violenty

          пользуйтесь русской

          • Vladimir

А чому я повинен користуватись російською версією, якщо є українська і я хочу щоб в ній був розділ в новинах Ігри. Тим паче що є українські геймерські сайти.

          • Vlad Violenty

будет RSS, добавите свои сайты в новости

  • vertebranes

    And yet again (+ again + again + …):
VPN doesn’t work correct – since days!
German “Server” with f.e. IP 81.7.16.152 won’t connect, hangs in some kind of a request loop, german server seems to be still very problematic, 40-70% no connection. And/or “unauthorized access”.
And so does “optimal location”, often not connecting. Resp. “unauthorized access”.
What’s going on opera? Your promotion-promises and reality does not match. => not noticeable!

    • Ralf Brinkmann

No problem here. Did you change anything in the settings – browser – network – proxy?
      W10x64

      • Daniel Young

I have too this problem. I changed nothing in proxy.

  • redfox

The tooltip of VPN icon should show the current IP address, not the text “VPN”.

    • Leonardo Gomes

      Why?

      • redfox

        Informational purposes.

        • Leonardo Gomes

OK, but why such information would be important and useful for most of the users?

I think that showing the VPN location would be more interesting.

          • redfox

OK, then country code (2 letters) + IP.

  • x a

Opera developer 40.0.2280.0 available for Linux [deb].

  • L33t4opera

    New build – Opera developer 40.0.2280.0 😉

  • Marcos Jacoby

Where the win x64 version? Only x64 version for linux?

    • Leonardo Gomes

There is a problem with x64 builds for Windows. They should return when the problem is fixed.

      • Marcos Jacoby

        Thanks! Hoping for the fix!

  • Phil Gardner

Are there any plans to release Opera Dev for Android?

    • Leonardo Gomes

You have to ask in the mobile team blog or in the forum.
However, i would guess that it should not happen, at least in a near future.

  • luffy

The vpn is not working from today. Please solve this issue
