Many of you have been waiting for the final version of Opera 37 with the native ad blocker.

And, here it is!
Stable update in Opera for computers include the native ad blocker

We truly appreciate that you tested the developer version. So, please keep your feedback coming, because it helps us improve the features for you.

Currently, you are helping us test our browser VPN in the developer version, and we are looking forward to rolling it out in the stable version soon.

Why we’ve brought ad blocker to Opera

At Opera, we truly care about speed. For more than 20 years, we have always kept pushing ahead for faster and leaner browsers. However, when planning our new features for 2016, we realized that, with no bloated ads, some top websites would load up to 90% faster. This is a serious performance issue that browsers haven’t been able to respond to for a long time.

We decided to change this by bringing, as the first major browser maker, native ad-blocking technology directly to the browser. And, “native” means that the ad blocking happens at the web engine level, making page loads much faster, while consuming much less memory than extension-based ad blockers.

How good is the native ad blocker?

Bringing this technology directly to the browser engine simplifies ad blocking and makes it much faster compared to extensions.

Many ad-blocker extensions spend a lot of time checking whether URLs or page elements occur in their block lists. Opera checks the block list using native code and fast algorithms, making the computation as fast as possible, which is out of reach for extension-based solutions. Furthermore, Opera blocks ads as early as possible: right in the engine, when a network request for a URL is first being made.

Our research shows that browsing with Opera’s ad-blocking feature is on average 62% faster than without ad blocker.

Recently, our further research has shown that browsing with the ad blocker enabled reduces memory consumption by up to 47%. Our test case showed reduced RAM usage of up to 600 MB for just 10 tabs.
Lower memory usage in Opera for computers with native ad blocker

How to enable native ad blocker

Using our native ad blocker is really simple. It’s deactivated by default, so you need to go to Settings (or Preferences on Mac) and flip the “Block ads” switch to turn it on. To activate or deactivate ad blocker for a specific website, simply click the shield icon in the address bar and flip the switch there.

The ad blocker dialog will reveal statistics showing how many ads you’re blocking on the current page and how many you’ve blocked overall. If you disable ad blocking on a website, the website is added to an exception list, which you can manage from Opera’s settings. You can click the gear icon in the pop-up to go there quickly.

Speed test – more than a gadget

With Opera’s ad blocker, you can benchmark the loading speed of the current webpage with and without the ad blocker enabled. It’s not only a great tool for users, but also will help advertisers and publishers understand the problem of heavy ads, and help accelerate the change that the ad industry needs to pursue.

We hope you enjoy playing around with these benchmarks. To encourage you, today we’re kicking off a fun, giveaway activity on our Twitter profile where, you can send your screenshots to show how much faster you’ve browsed with Opera.

Stay tuned for the giveaway details from @opera on Twitter.

Video pop out

Another important addition in this version is the video pop out feature, which allows you to shift your video frame to the side of your screen, so you can truly multitask: browse, shop online or do the research without missing out on the video action. You can drag your video around the screen and close it immediately should the need arise. People love watching videos, and we believe this feature will significantly improve the way you experience your favorite video content.
Video pop out in Opera for computers

We are happy to bring two such important improvements to the stable version. Stay tuned to hear about more cool stuff we have planned for you. Download the latest Opera for computers, and let us know what you think about it in the comments.

    THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Mikolaj Boc

      Welcome 😀

  • iYuzver

Your blocker doesn’t remove the panel with advertizing a mail service of Outlook. Cleans advertizing from the panel, and the panel doesn’t. Expansions clean, the Opera doesn’t!

    • Kornelia

Sometimes blocked elements are still visible on a page as placeholders. They are still blocked, saving your bandwidth! We’re aware of this issue and we’re working on this. It should be fixed on developer stream any day soon.

      • iYuzver

Thanks! Very much I wait for correction!

      • iYuzver

The feature to add the filters from the known expansions for efficiency of blocking will be in the future added? Now the Opera blocker very badly blocks advertizing. Almost a half of advertizing is present at each website.
        For example it:

  • xirit64

Congratulations! Exceptional releases this O37 and the upcoming O38. Eagerly waiting for both ad-blocking and VPN to reach Opera for Android as well!

  • Bas Keetelaar

Great, thanks for the update! Only problem I have with the ad blocker at the moment is that it doesn’t really work on Wired.com, because they show their anti ad-block message.

    • Kornelia

A website can always detect an adblocker, there is nothing we can do about it.

      • SQL

Yes, there is. You could implement element blocking.. :p

  • ouzowtf

Something is very wrong in the speed test in the screenshot…
    “34% faster with ads”?

    • Rüthemann Piddy

Well, the Opera homepage is so optimized that adding ads even makes it faster 😉

    • Tomasz Procków

      Fixed, thanks 🙂

    • RafaellaG

“screenshots” are “desinged”. Not necessarily authentical screenshots – nevertheless they are mostly true^^

  • hassanraza

    Woohoo finally its here .

  • ParakeetTurd

How does it compare if we use 2 adblockers? I would like to keep mublock on for the more pesky things like adblock removal warnings, or such. Does having the built in adblocker in some sense reduce the load on third party adblockers without compromising any “speed” of just using one single adblocker?

For example, if we have a 3rd party adblocker, are there now double counted checks on blocked ads? I would think if something is natively blocked, it doesn’t even have to get further blocked by mublock.

    • Kornelia

Yes, extension adblocker action will be reduced. However, please note that some things will be checked twice.

  • Júnior Silva

Where can I find the notes of the release? 🙂

  • Oleksandr V

Pop out video freezes after moving source tab to separate window. Is it normal?

    • Kornelia

No, freeze should not happen. Thanks for pointing that out. I’ll report this.

  • IlyaS

Thank you for ad-blocker! Is there installation command line switch to enable it?

    • Kornelia

No command line needed. You enable it in Settings – Basic.

  • oic

I use adguard and ublock origin. Has anyone run a test and compare it to opera’s adblock to see which block the most?

  • qwerzaq

full of happiness , you must :
block element on the page manually .
and a filter list by region:

    examples:
block element on the page manually:

    before:

    • RafaellaG

Surely there will be improvements coming in Opera 38+.
For example: In Opera 38 Developer there is the possibility to add custom filter lists.

But for now it’s a really new feature and works as it is.

  • tr3w

Opera Desktop and Opera Mini… I think something is missing. Do you plan to implement this feature for Opera Mobile? (It makes even more sense than Opera Desktop)

    • xirit64

yes they are but there is no ETA.

      • Kai Ockendorf

What about Opera Mini for iOS!? Will it have the ad block feature too?

        • Wando Schneider

I could be wrong, but since in the IOS all browsers need to use webkit, i don’t know if they could build it on top of the IOS’s webkit…

          • It is the server side feature in Opera Mini world 😉 Follow our blogs.

          • Wando Schneider

…and Zhenis strikes again xD. I’ll rephrase: I’m wrong 🙂

  • Morra

Blocking advertisements is the same as stealing.

    • Kurt Zon

      ¿?

    • Wando Schneider

      It’s not.

      • Morra

Why so? Websites lose ad revenue when ads are blocked, therefore you are stealing the “free” content since you have not paid for it through ads.

        • RafaellaG

If they want me to pay for it, they would have installed a pay-wall.

          • Morra

That does not make any sense, advertisements can be a website’s only source of revenue and if you use an adblocker you are depriving them of that revenue. Its pretty simple really

          • RafaellaG

Either they let me pay for their content and then I decide whether the site is important enough for me to spend money for it, or they turn them freely, but then I decide if their advertisement is acceptable for me or if I block it.

          • Morra

You don’t decide the business model. the website does. If you dont like the ads, then dont use the site.

          • RafaellaG

I decide if I use a “free” website. And I decide if I accept their unwanted ads!

          • Morra

And if you don’t accept the ads you are stealing.

          • RafaellaG
          • Morra

            ??

          • RafaellaG

            Wando Schneider -> Morra
            “It’s not.”

          • Morra
          • Wando Schneider

“We messed up,” wrote Scott Cunningham, senior vice president of technology of the Internet Advertising Bureau and general manager of its Tech Lab. “As technologists tasked with delivering content and services to users, we lost track of the user experience.”

            http://www.pcworld.com/article/2993927/websites/online-ad-industry-battling-ad-blockers-admits-it-messed-up.html

          • Matej Szendi

If you close eyes during advertisements broadcast in TV is it stealing too? Or if you go to WC? No, it is only your choice what you want to see.

          • Morra

With TV it is different since the advertisers pay the broadcasters in advance for the airtime of the advert so no one is out of money. With web advertising it is paid per impression and/or clicks.

          • Matej Szendi

This is reaction to annoying and invasive ads like overlays, video or sound ads. This ads consume a lot of data too. So many website visitors have decided to block them.

          • Morra

Ive never found ads on a reputable site intrusive

          • RafaellaG

Then you only have to decide which are “reputable”.^^

          • Morra

I agree that sites that have like 5 popups for every click are intrusive (and usually come from shady websites anyway), but the simple banner ads and youtube preroll syle ads are not.

          • RafaellaG

You can jokingly open http://www.bild.de (without adblocker and Ghostery) and tell me what’s advertising and what’s not.
And why they need at least 25 trackers/widgets.^^

Btw. Without adblocker and Ghostery you don’t want to visit their site and with it you can’t.^^

Ok, there’s a way around – but who cares.

          • Morra

It works fine for me without any adblocker

          • RafaellaG

Yes it works. But it’s totally unclear and riddled with so much advertising that you can not see the actual content.
And if I “pause” Ghostery to open it, it reports at least 25 trackers/widgets!

          • Morra

I dont see what the problem is with “25 trackers/widgets!”, for me it does not affect consumption of the content. I can see and read the news articles perfectly without any ads so I fail to see your point

          • Leonardo Gomes

So maybe the business model is wrong and needs to be revised?
Also, i think that the ones using ad-blockers will not click on an ad on a website so they won’t make any difference on the revenue coming from ads.

          • Morra

Some ad networks pay based on impressions

          • Leonardo Gomes

Maybe it’s time to start changing it?

          • RafaellaG

I always switch to another TV program.^^

          • Morra
          • Wando Schneider

He is right. This is why we use Opera’s adblock, and not ADBPlus 😉

          • Morra

The same principle applies, what if someone developed an extension to block the occasional speed dial ads in opera would opera be happy with that? I don’t think so.

          • NoName

Why would Opera be against that?
It’s a choice done by the user.

I remove them manually myself, so what’s the difference if an extension did it for me?

          • Morra

Whilst removing it you still saw it…

          • NoName

As far as I know, they only count the clicks. But I’m not sure.

Feel free to create that extension!
The API does not allow to remove speed dials, as far as I can see.

But it allows you to edit them, making them show something else.

          • Morra

Ive worked with adnetworks before, Networks like Gunggo count and pay for both impressions and clicks.

It is possible to remove speed dial entries, you can use the chrome.bookmarks API and remove from the speed dial folder. Theoretically it should be possible by keeping track of the bookmarks the user adds in localStorage and since the advertisement speed dials are added when the browser restarts a check can be made if they are any the user has not added, however it would be difficult to test and this is also assuming that the onCreated is not fired when the ad speed dials are added. However I have no problem with these ads and therfore have no desire to make it, I was just making a point.

          • Leonardo Gomes

Why? So anyone who go to the bathroom or change channels during commercial breaks are stealing just because they are not seeing the ads?

          • Morra

With TV it is different since the advertisers pay the broadcasters in advance for the airtime of the advert so no one is out of money. With web advertising it is paid per impression and/or clicks.

          • NoName

But the amount paid is done on how many viewers there are (best guestimate). In the end, it’s the same.

          • Morra

Thats viewers of the show not individual ads, the TV industry is very different. The value of ad slots are based Nielson or BARB ratings.

        • Matej Szendi

If you close eyes during advertisements broadcast in TV is it stealing too? Or if you go to WC? No, it is only your choice what you want to see.

    • Nekomajin43

Following your logic, sending unnecessary data to my machine and using more resources (CPU, RAM) therefore more electricity is stealing, because I have to pay for it.

If you can not understand that Opera is not against ads in general, but against resource-heavy ads, then you do something wrong.

      • Morra

That does not follow my logic since your CPU and RAM is not a business.

        • Nekomajin43

It is a business for me.

          • Morra

i don’t think so, you business revenue will come from the services you make/provide using the CPU/Ram, not directly from it.

          • Nekomajin43

You know what? Just keep on ranting! 🙂

    • Leonardo Gomes
    • Good thing ad blocking is optional =)

  • salty

Georgian letters are shown as squares after this update. Is there a way to fix it except disabling Directwrite?

  • Stanislav Stratil

Alright, im taking back what I said earlier.

When I disabled adguard, and started using your native adblocker, im noticing some big speed ups on some webpages.

And after actually trying that video popup feature, its really handy, and works great.

I also appreciate the option to hide “plus” button from speed dial and customization of left panel.

So, thank you for this release.

  • iPristy

I say yes to Opera, i hope there is enough space for ad numbers, i like to bombard browser with tabs that’s for sure and yes less RAM loaded that actually means faster finish times for older systems after all and what is important, currently i can’t afford a fast desktop computer so that’s that and thank you.

  • iYuzver

Make such menu by the right button of a mouse on the file in a window of downloads.
    http://jpegshare.net/ce/05/ce05776392ded2463e4656006527574d.jpg.html
Now it is very uncomfortable each time to go to the downloads page.

  • LoverOfLife

How to block a specific ad, with a context menu ? Ex. “Block element”

    • Nekomajin43

It is impossible at this time.

      • LoverOfLife

I see, thanks for info. So i’ll keep using uBlock 😉

        • Nekomajin43

You can use them together. The native solution will catch a lot of stuff so the extension will have less to do.

          • LoverOfLife

            Yes, good point.

          • Nekomajin43

            They use the same “easylist”.

          • LoverOfLife

            Alright, thank you 🙂

  • Nekomajin43

    Guys, any update on DNA-53204?
It is about the ability to import adblock lists from online sources.

  • Freddy

YouTube videos are still not marked as watched when the ad-blocker is active. This was reported before the ad-blocker made it into stable (since developer version). As a YouTube user, it’s disappointing that it has not been fixed yet.

    • I wonder if Google uses one of their ad servers for that on Youtube (which Google owns)

      • Freddy

Yeah, but uBlock Origin has no problems with marking videos as watched.

    • Leonardo Gomes

It’s fixed on latest developer build and now it needs to go through the steps into stable builds.

  • Another Opera update on my birthday (the other was a few years ago)
Update changed the zoom of speeddial (zoom was increased)
I think I have a few sites to test the ad blocker on

On http://www.nytimes.com/ (New York Times the ad blocker is increasing page load a huge amount opera://speedtest/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nytimes.com%2F (it is still loading as of this comment edit over 7 minutes)

  • K. K. VinayKumar

Can I use Ghostery along with built in ad blocker? Will it cause any conflict with it?

    • RafaellaG

Yes you can use it. No conflicts.

      • K. K. VinayKumar

Thank you. I had never thought that pages would load so much fast. Well done Opera Team.

    • David_Gould

I don’t use Ghostery because they sell data to advertisers. It works fine with Disconnect, which is similar.

      • K. K. VinayKumar

Hmmm… I see. I’ll install it right away.

  • PlonPlon

How do you enable adblock on Mac?

    • Wando Schneider

      Settings > basic.

      • PlonPlon

Well, it is embarrassing, but I can’t see it. I managed to do it on Windows earlier, but can’t see the setting in Mac.

DONE! Silly me! I hadn’t relaunched the browser!
Works very well now! Thanks Opera!

        • Wando Schneider

Check the version. Stable channel is released in stages…

          • PlonPlon

Works very well and to the speed of light! Congratulations all for your great work!

  • Vancete

Video Pop is not working in Netflix, please fix it.

    • Kornelia

The ticket for this is already created in our bugfixing system. No ETA yet.

  • Matheus Bitencourt

I’m loving Opera again after 5 years on Chrome.
Opera is great again! Presto was horrible. Blink/Webkit is great…
I’m waiting for the tab stacking though

  • TomEk

Unfortunately this version recognize wrong the Flash version. You hat this issue 2 or 3 versions before

    • Leonardo Gomes

      What do you mean?

      • TomEk

Open a page with Flash. For example: http://www.bridgebase.com/client/client.php
You see the info that your Flash Player is old. But it does not

        • RafaellaG

          No problem here (Win 10×64)

Do you use NPAPI Flash player?
Then it could something have to do with NPAPI deprecation.

See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NPAPI under Deprecation or google for “NPAPI deprecation”.

          Use PPAPI instead, if possible.

        • Leonardo Gomes

Do you have latest ppapi Flash installed?
Also, what OS is being used?

          • TomEk

            I use chromium-pepper-flash
            I use opensuse 42.1
There was no problems with the previous stable version
I had the same problems 2 or 3 versions ago.

          • Some times pepper-flash doesn’t updates when updating the system.

I just had this problem too and had to force it to reinstall with “sudo apt-get install –reinstall pepperflashplugin-nonfree” on my Ubuntu. Maybe the equivalent command will work for you on Suse.

          • TomEk

I did it. It does not help

          • TomEk

After returning to the 36.0.2130.65 version everyting is ok. So the problem is is the new version

          • Leonardo Gomes

OK, but do you have ppapi Flash installed?
If not, then Flash will not work.

  • K. K. VinayKumar

Wow! Everything is opening so fast it feels like driving a fast motorcycle for the first time. I had never experienced websites open this fast. I always used to curse my ISP due to slow loading of websites. 10 Thumbs Up from me.

  • Mike

Does the video pop out work with Netflix? Isn’t working on the latest developer release, the pop out is just blank.

    • Wait Netflix works on Opera now?

Edit: NVM, I’m on Ubuntu, thats why.

      • David_Gould

The popout video is awesome. Greatly preferred the old ‘3D shadow’ frame styling though. It’s working on nearly all FB videos now.

Is it part of Opera’s native HTML player? It doesn’t work on Twitch TV yet. Any chance you can get it to work for iPlayer? (you’d need a UK IP to access its player).

    • Kornelia

      Not yet.

  • Morra

Just saw the pop out player, its quite awesome however I feel it should be activate from the context menu rather than an overlay icon unless there is an attribute, or at least the icon should be hidden when the controls attribute is not present on the video tag.

  • qwerzaq

why not make full name Opera / 37.0.2178.32
    than the OPR / 37.0.2178.32
At Vivaldi in this respect everything is fine
    Here is an example :
    http://s41.radikal.ru/i094/1605/ea/08eed1de669a.png

почему не сделать полное имя Opera/37.0.2178.32
    чем OPR/37.0.2178.32
У Vivaldi в этом плане все нормально
    вот пример:

    • Marcin Mitek

We had some issues with “too long” user agent string in the past 🙂 And one we have is already quite long.

  • GF-REX

Very sweet! I just need custom filters to make it into Stable and I’ll be all set.

    • RafaellaG

Opera Developer 38 already has custom filters.
But for now, you can only update them manually.

  • Janusz

After upgrade i have no sound on every youtube videos. Vimeo, Soundcloud etc works as always. Tab icons shows sound playing but no sound coming out of speakers.

    • BK

What’s your OS? Are you sure main sound switch is not off?

      • Janusz

Mac OS X 10.10.5 html5 mode of youtube. Ok i can actually provide more info becouse i checked some thing. I work with usb soundcard (native instruments a8) and it has headphone output in chanells 7/8. In system it has option to use output 7/8 as main output. Soundclound/vimeo act like this and output it to corect output, youtube ignores it and output sound to other output. With earlier version in acts corect. All other browsers (im a web developer so i have it many ;-)) its act good, only youtube in this version doesnt work that way

        • Radek Rzepecki

I could not reproduce your problem. do you have any extensions installed? if so can you try to disable them and try? If this does not help, please backup your profile directory (see opera:about for path), delete it and try it with clean installation.

  • ChDyCo

How can I reset the adblock’s counter?

    • Mikolaj Boc

Check out your local state file. But better don’t touch it if you’re not an experienced power user. 😉

  • duhduhduh0

Really nifty. It does feels faster

  • Roby

Went back to ABP within minutes.
It’s not blocking everything, I’m the only one who should be deciding about exceptions.

    • Nekomajin43

It blocks everything that is on the easylist or easyprivacy, for now. Custom list support will be in O38.

    • BK

Blocking EVERYTHING seems like a good idea, yes.. 😀
More updates to Opera native adblock is incoming with next iterations.

  • duhduhduh0

How can the blocker bypass adblockers that sniff them?

  • Dark Magician

Is the VPN going into the mobile version as well?
And will the installer replace automatically or promt for 64-bit version on 64-bit OS, or we will have to manually replace when you release it? Main question being for the data stored in the browser.

  • Abdolahi

    androidpolice.com is 92% faster !!!!
    woooooowwwwwww
25.92 sec VS 02.00 . can you believe that ?
    amazing
    thanks opera team
    i love you !!!

  • yigido

Thanks for the release and great features. Congrats dev team.
From now on, I do not have to say that “Install this browser and add this extension to it” I will just say Install Opera, and have fun with the internet!
Good job guys, keep it up! I already forgot the O12

    • Юлия

Imo still nothing beats the ‘Links’ feature in Opera Presto :3 Would love to see this implemented in Opera Blink.
      https://i.imgur.com/ubfNHmm.png
Batch download could not be easier than this.

      • yigido

Believe me the missing features numbers are very few, actually I am used to use blink Opera. I hope they will add more cool features, time will tell. Enjoy the fresh features now 😉 When you hit your missings open your O12 (portable for me) 😉

  • Alexander

    Goooooooood Job!!

Really, Opera – with O37 – pages load much faster!! And browser itself works better!

    Only few things missing:

    1) Please make ability to reload speed dial preview images via F5 on speed dial page or individually (via pressing edit/update) as it was someday before. So you could see at a glance what changed on your favorite pages.

    2) Synchronization icon is missing – after I’ve cleared browsing history! And I cant find in settings or elsewhere option to display that icon again.

    • Wando Schneider

      2) In the main menu, look for “Synchronize” or “Sync”

    • RafaellaG

      2) If you mean the sync button.
Here are the rules when the sync button is showing/hidden:

      – Sync button is always visible if #hide-sync-login-button flag is disabled (in all states)
      – Sync button is hidden two weeks after flag was enabled for the first time and button is in grey state
      – Sync button is hidden in red button state, when error is caused by network problem
      – Sync button is hidden in green button state
      – Sync button is visible when sync login popup is displayed and at least 10 seconds after popup is closed

      • Alexander

Thanks, I found necessary option in opera:flags.

        • Leonardo Gomes

Make sure to have read the text on top of flags page.

  • Kirill Dnepropetrovets-Ts

What`s about Opera Mini, Coast and other your mobile versions?

  • Hi, I came back to use Opera as my default browser since a month ago. Since the last update Flash 20.0.0.306 is tagged as deprecated, that is the version I get from Ubuntu’s repositories. Well, I can live without Flash, but the adblocker is blocking legitimate content.

Here I have two examples that show the adblocker is not working correctly. The web pages are in Spanish, but you can identify the location of videos easily. Without using Flash (because I can’t use it with Opera) I must deactivate the adblocker to play videos in these websites.

    http://www.20minutos.es/noticia/2738669/0/guionista-dragon-ball-evolution-disculpas/

    http://videos.marca.com/v/0_gecv0zcf-jordi-alba-si-gano-dos-titulos-me-da-igual-lo-que-hagan-otros?count=0

I think that Opera developers need to improve the algorithm of its abdlocker.

    • yigido

Adblocking feature filters are Easylist and EasyPrivacy. So you should send an e-mail to author of filters about your issue. In the next release, it will be solved, because Opera cannot update the filters.

    • Both websites and their videos load correctly for me with ad blocker. Ubuntu 15.10 x64.

So the movie’s screenwriter is apologizing uh, well, about time!

And for the Flash problem here is the work around that worked for me: http://webupd8.org/2016/04/how-to-get-flash-and-h264-to-work-in.html

In the title says it is for some other browser, but it works for Opera; for Flash and H264 videos (Twitter’s pseudo gifs and all that stuff) that you can’t natively play.

      • Are you sure that you are loading the videos with HTML5 and not with Flash?

  • Alex Wazovskiy

Opera’s Adblocker blocks videos on vk.com.
Video for example: http://vk.com/video-30315369_171367846 – with adblock disabled, it works, when enabled – infinite loading.

    • RafaellaG

      Can’t confirm this (Win 10×64).

Here the example video is shown even with adblock and Ghostery enabled.
Only thing is: without cookies enabled it didn’t run.^^

      • Alex Wazovskiy

Hmm… Maybe it’s just for my system (Win7x64, Flash Player 21.0.0.213)

        • Vux777

          same as @RafaellaG
          win10x64, Opera adblocker + Ghostery
          http://prntscr.com/b09pkc

          • RafaellaG

            So it’s probably a Win7x64 thing.
Maybe a member of Opera team can help here.

          • Alex Wazovskiy

Erm… I thought you are a member of Opera Team 😮

          • RafaellaG

No. I only have much time – until June that is 🙂

          • Alex Wazovskiy

This may occur only in Win7. I’ll wait when someone test it on Win7x64.

          • Kornelia

I’ve also checked Win7 and works fine. Maybe try adding vk.com do adblock exceptions.

    • Юлия

Works on Windows 7 too. I don’t have Flash though.
      https://i.imgur.com/6zCU3Os.png

      • Alex Wazovskiy

        ¯_(ツ)_/¯
UPD: The issue occurs only with Flash.

        • Юлия

          =))

  • Roderik Ploszek

Thanks for the new version, it’s great!
It would be handy if the video pop out could snap to the edge of the screen.
Do you plan to add a feature like that?

    • Marko Marić

      EXACTLY!!

  • Dark Magician

O Menu isn’t red when system color on top bar is enabled:

    https://imgur.com/a/TMhbR

    • Leonardo Gomes

It adapts to the color AFAIK.

      • Dark Magician

I’m not sure if it is a bug or a feature. so I pointed it out.

        • Leonardo Gomes

          I guess it’s a feature.

        • Wando Schneider

It’s designed to work like that 😉

    • bwat47

Red O menu would look bad when using a dark titlebar color

  • Yro

Please, consider releasing an build without any trace of vpn services. Please, atleast consider it!!! This new build, with ad-block, is freaking awesome… 😛

    • Where is the problem? Is optional, you have to enable it to use VPN.

  • Native ad blocker worse than ABP.

    • Ghirahim

      Nope.

    • yigido

Both use the same filters, how can you say that?
      Did you investigate a bug?

    • oic

      I have
      opera adblock 6200 ads blocked
      adguard 2600 ads blocked
      ublock origin 3800 ads blocked
      Active at the same time

      • NoName

You can’t count on the numbers when they are all active at the same time.
Opera might block some requests that the extensions does not even register, because the build in does it a bit earlier in the process.

  • Service “slovari.yandex.ru” is dead. See picture: http://images.62live.ru/pic_b/8fcc4374476ad6056114c4e3309173c6.png

  • yigido

Guys, add Privacy badger to your Opera, it will catch the tracker domains and block them. After some usage, it learns and even it blocks some tracker ads. I am using this while ad-blocking enabled. Both of them will be great! Just a suggestion for who interest! https://www.eff.org/privacybadger

  • Jamie F.

    EDIT: Fixed

    • Kornelia

Hi Jamie, what’s your operating system? I can suggest cleaning your profile. Maybe that would help. If not – let me know – we’ll be looking for a solution how to fix your problem.

  • Spideymang

Thank you for the update Team!! you rock, it’s the best browser in all the Internet
    Loads the pages faster
    Greetings from Mexico City!!!

    • Kornelia

      Muchas gracias Spideymang 🙂

  • John Boehner Vaegina

    DNA-45607 has not been fixed.

Steps: Enable the extensions to run in private mode, make sure they’re
set to display in the toolbar, run Opera with the “–private” switch.
Result: no extension icons in the toolbar.

I mentioned during the 36 release that if this bug wasn’t fixed by the next major update that I’d be removing this browser permanently. So long Crapera!

    • RafaellaG

Can confirm this …but because of this ONE thing you don’t use Opera any more.??

      • John Boehner Vaegina

I used Opera exclusively in private mode. Because of this 6+ month old bug that they claimed to have fixed, but did not, I could not use any of my extensions. If I wanted an extensionless browser, I’d use IE. The devs don’t care. All they do is add themes and other useless junk and don’t bother to fix the multitude of bugs that get reported. I’ve moved to Vivaldi. At least the devs are responsive and my extensions work.

        • RafaellaG

You can always open Opera first and open a private window from within.
It’s not very satisfying, I know, but it works too.

  • mies

Thanks! I tried native ad blocking and it works well for me. However extensions have a feature that is required too – ability to select an element and block it. Hope you will continue to add more features for the native ad blocker.

  • oic

    One criticism regarding opera’s adblock
While Yahoo email ad on the right side of the page is blocked, the large grey bar remain

Adguard actually remove this grey bar

    • Kornelia

This is an issue we’re aware of. We’ve got it reported as DNA-50588 and the problem is already solved internally. New version will be updated soon. Thanks!

  • Add a refresh button next to the ad-block toggle.

    • Leonardo Gomes

      What for?

      • bwat47

uBlock has this function, it allows you to refresh the page immediately after toggling adblock on/off for a site without having to move the mouse over to the browser’s refresh button

      • I don’t know.

        Ohh… ohh… I have it…

What if… it would refresh the page? 😲

        • Leonardo Gomes

And why not use the regular refresh button?

I guess that an option to reload the page after the adblocker have been enabled or disabled would be more interesting.

  • ImaPC

well done, pretty good stuff, just one question: how can I disable the google search from it? i have changed the search engine but still redirects to google sometimes,
    Cheers
    H

    • Leonardo Gomes

You mean the one on start page? If so, you can hide it on the start page settings.

  • yigido

Opera, do you have a plan to update filters whithout updating browser itself?

    • BK

      Sorry, what filters?

      • yigido

Don’t you say that “Opera using the Easylist+EasyPrivacy” filters? I am talking about it.

  • firuz_u7

No theme overlay does not work please correct

    win 10 x64

    • Kornelia

Can you please send a screenshot?

      • firuz_u7
        • RafaellaG

To get the “brighter” theme, not only has the #no-theme-overlay flag to be enabled, but a Use Overlay=false has to be included (in the [Start Page] section) in the persona.ini theme .zip file.

A How to to the Persona.ini details (version 2) you can find here: https://dev.opera.com/articles/themes-in-opera-18-and-higher/

          @Kornelia
You should revise this article. It doesn’t reflect the “Use Overlay=false”.
Btw. Does the create theme “+” in the Customize Start page create version 2 themes …and with the Use Overlay statement?

          • firuz_u7

I’m sorry I’m not so good at English , I want to know is correct or not in the future

извините я не так хорош в английском я хочу знать исправят это или нет в будущем

          • RafaellaG

            1. Enter opera://flags/?search=theme%20overlay in address bar. The flag should be enabled (default).
            1b. Close Opera
            2. Open your theme file (in Usersyour_usernameAppDataRoamingOpera SoftwareOpera StableThemes). It’s a .zip file.
Extract the persona.ini. Add “Use Overlay=false” (without “”) to the persona.ini in [Start Page]. Save the persona.ini.
            3. Move the changed persona.ini into the .zip file again (replace).
            4. Start Opera and select the theme.

Should work. Works for me (Win 10 x64).
Maybe you should clear the cache and restart Opera afterwards.

    • Kornelia

      Ubuntu 14.04 or later.

Well, I don’t know how, but it updated and now works well on 12.04, there’re no problems. 🙂

How can I get the final version 37 Opera browser version for 64 bits because my laptop is x64 and I’m using the version x86 (32 bits)

    • Wando Schneider

X64 for Windows Probably will hit Stable Channel in the Next version. For now, only in the Developer channel.

      • Rafael

        Thanks for this information.

I swear I thought the 64-bit version come with the final release of Opera 37

        • bwat47

So far 64-bit builds have only shown up in the developer channel and haven’t yet made it to beta or stable channels.

I do hope it moves to beta/stable soon, now that chromium/opera no longer supports NPAPI plugins there’s not much reason to not have 64-bit

  • Klomar

Hello, the native ad-block feature is just awesome! But I think now there’s a bug with the thumbnails in the speed dial. I use the speed dial as homepage. When I open Opera every thumbnail is represeting just the name of the website instead of the image I selected. But if I open the speed dial on another tab (or if I hit F5) then the thumbnails appear correctly, at least until I close Opera and open it again.

    • Klomar

update: I tried first by reinstalling opera but nothing changed, then I deleted some elements from the speed dial (I had like 10 folders with 10 links inside each of them) and now it works perfectly, so it seems related with the number of links inside the speed dial

  • José Felipe Dos Santos

    Awesome!!!! I love it Opera!!!

  • Kenny

Not able to enable notificaitons in google drive.

  • medigi

On some sites, like rutracker – some ads not blocked by native adblocker

    • yigido

Opera using Easylist & Easyprivacy filters. So It is not related with Opera, some local ads are appearing on my side too. Maybe you can report these un-blocked ads to filter author by mail. https://easylist.github.io/
and please be patient 😉 Soon, we can add our own filter lists into Opera’s native adblocker.

  • Pavol

I am really sorry but i have to say. I don’t trust Norwegian developers anymore. Implementing VPN is perfect idea same as built-in adblock, but it’s probably too complicated for them to make some basic customizations so users can make some adjustments in UI. To be more specific, users might be able to move the bookmark bar on the right hand side of address pane (so the address pane and bookmarks are in the same line) and secondly, to implement an option in menu using which we can disable pop-up messages when page goes full-screen (i know it can be done using opera:flags), but this is neither friendly option as well as it doesn’t work with the current release 37.

    • Davey126

What does Norwegian have to do with it? Oh wait – you were being sarcastic rather than constructive. My bad.

      • Pavol

If my comment above was too offensive or inappropriate i apologize for that, I just want to highlight the fact that in 21st century there might be some more freedom for users to customize the UI. But i really appreciate that Opera focuses on privacy and security, but the browser could be great again like it was in the past (Opera 12 and earlier), that time there was much more to do in terms of settings and customizations.

    • yigido

Are you sure these problems related with trust?

    • Leonardo Gomes

What about Polish ones? And Dutch? Maybe Spanish ones? Swedish?

    • Gordon Freeman

      Hallo Pavol !
The “pop-up messages when page goes full-screen” can be
disabled with installing the “Auto Allow Fullscreen” extension !

    • RafaellaG

VPN was only introduced in Opera Developer 38. Give the Opera team some time to improve it. It’s not going to happen in 2 weeks.

And the other things: They have their own priorities what’s to improve and when. So we can surely suggest improvement, but if these are on their own list and where… who knows?

But have some faith in them. Surely Opera will get better and better 🙂

  • Killerjeff

There is no “Baidu” search engine in Opera 37.0. I can add “Baidu” as other search engine, but I can’t set it as default search engine. It’s not convenient for Chinese users.

    • yigido

It is good for security reasons. Every third party app can add its search engine to Chrome and people are suffering to remove it to make Google again. I love that feature in Opera, it doesn’t let 3. parties to change it.
But for users, you are right, maybe they can do something for this.

  • I’m with you Opera! Sometimes the Ads on websites are annoying, and creates a non-confortable navigation experience. Opera 37 is great!

  • Krasen Ivanov

Please add auto-hide to the video pop-out, its very annoying even when watching a full screen video.

    • Klomar

Do you mean the icon to click to pop out the video? In my case it auto-hides correctly, and if I set the video to fullscreen mode it doesn’t even appear at all. Try re-installing Opera maybe that’ll fix it

      • Krasen Ivanov

Apparently it only goes away if the mouse is not on top of the video. However the youtube player bottom bar goes away immediately but the opera icon stays and its kind of annoying. I found that when you go to full screen it goes away, and when you go to normal view the icon goes away too when the mouse is on top.

    • mies

Yes, for me auto-hide doesn’t always work too. Sometimes it works, but delay is quite long compared to youtube delay for auto-hide controls.
I disabled this feature altogether: opera://flags/#media-detachable-view

  • alvin

I encoutered this bug long ago but back then I encountered it while having many add-on installed so I think that those add-on caused it and decide to live with it. However today I just remove opera and reinstall it again with no add-on and the bug happened again that I make sure that it’s not add-on faults

as you can see, the mouse gesture doesn’t work. Not only that, I cannot type any text to web textbox (this comment text box for example) but still can type to address bar, copy and paste text (only using mouse click, keystroke doesn’t work)

      • It was working when I started O 37, and now later it is a dead link (no action when I click on it)

  • LAMBDA471

Here’s some feedback for your built-in AdBlocker and why I think it’s still only halfway useful.

Sometimes it doesn’t block “non-intrusive” ads and this is bothering. Also, there is no pop-up blocker, on websites such as thewatchseries.to where you have to click a link to an external video source, such as Gorilla Vid, it opens pop-ups like crazy.

The built-in pop-up blocker is completely useless and it only prompts me to install extensions. Since there is no pop-up blocker extension in the Opera Extensions Store, I have to install an extension, which allows me to install extensions from Chrome App Store.

Basically, due to no proper pop-up blocking included in this new built-in pop-up blocker, I have to install two separate extensions, just to patch it up, considering the fact that the purpose of this is to minimize the use of extensions.

If I have to resort to such methods, I don’t see myself using Opera as my default browser anytime soon.

I suggest you make ad blocking more aggressive, as it doesn’t block web socket ads either and include an enhanced pop-up blocker that literally blocks pop-ups and displays a notification, allowing users to open the pop-up manually, if they need to.

You are headed in the right direction, but you are not yet there.

    • Don’t have any problems at all when i tested on the site you mentioned using the Open Source uBlock Origin (not the same as uBlock), that’s not just a Adblocker, but a blocker for everything (scripts, dom-content, tracking and so on) before they are executed. While the block lists built in and from others gives a very good protection, i had also created my own filters and blocking rules using the extension (i use the Advanced settings view mode, that may not be for the casual surfer that will be fine with the default setting view mode).

The Github Repo for uBlock Origin is at: https://github.com/gorhill/uBlock (recommended if you want get to know the functionallity in-depth.)

And the Opera Store URL is:
https://addons.opera.com/en/extensions/details/ublock/?display=en (yes, it’s uBlock Origin and not uBlock).

*Note: Im not affiliated with the Project, or know the maintainer in anyway.

  • Shion

Focus-stealing downloads popup is still stealing focus from current tab. Maybe next year, huh?

Good job fixing big-picture lags! CPU still shows high loads, but it is obvious that you (or Chromium devs) did a nice job optimizing the renderer, as FPS is much more higher now.

Good to have native ad-blocker too, but EasyList and EasyPrivacy are not enough to replace uBlock just yet. Especially with it’s bigger custom subscriptions list and ability to clean-up blocked image containers and iframes.

Video popup is kinda useless, as it closes down with it’s parent tab, and is a pain in the ass to resize. There is no fullscreen button, so I can’t just move the popup to second monitor and fullscreen it there. Would be nice though.

And you still can’t change order of extension buttons without manually editing “preferences” file. At Opera 50 maybe?

I suppose it’s still early to come back from FireFox now.

    • RafaellaG

      Concerning the ad-blocker:
In Developer Opera 38 it’s already possible to add custom filter lists for the ad-blocker. But their update however currently work only manually.
I hope the Opera team fixes this …hopefully.

  • Fonksta

Hello everybody! My version of Opera doesn’t update when I open the “about Opera” window! That was basically also the case in the previous versions? Does anybody know why?

    • What OS are you on?

      • Fonksta

        Win 10 64 Bit

        • RafaellaG

If you use the stable version then you can try to download and install it manually (maybe uninstall the current version beforehand – without deleting user-data!) and see if the next time auto-update works.

Link to Windows (Offline) is on the top right of this page.

          • Fonksta

Yeah i do use the stable version and I know I can update it manually, but always doing it that way would be hella inconvenient! It used to be that way that when a new version was released, usually the next day I could update via the about opera page. Did the developers take that feature out? I really don’t understand and this buggs me out, because I really prefer opera ….I also tried to delete the profile folder but it didn’t change anything 🙁 Does anybody know a solution to this tragedy? :(((

          • Leonardo Gomes

Download the online installer. Then you will only to run it if the autoupdater doesn’t work.

          • Fonksta

nothing happens as the about opera page says newest version installed (36). Is there no other possibilty? Did your versions of opera update via the about opera page? I really don get it, till version 30 or 31 or so it did update using the about opera page!

          • Leonardo Gomes

Yep, it was updated this way like i usually always do.

The about page says that your Opera is up to date?

            What build does it shows?

          • Fonksta

Yeah the about opera page tells me up to date (36.0.2130.66)

          • Leonardo Gomes

Probably something is preventing Opera from autoupdate. Running the installer may help fix the issue.

          • Fonksta

Thank you very much for your help! I think I just gonna wait, maybe at a later time my version of opera will update via the usual routine…i really hope so…maybe it’s some kind of rollout thing, I’m living in europe, maybe here it’s available later than somewhere else

          • BK

Hi, what type of Opera installation have you used (single user, all users, usb)? What’s your OS? Do you use some custom firewall settings?

          • Fonksta

Hi BK, I have a standard installation (so I guess it’s all users) on Windows 10 64 Bit. I don’t use custom firewall settings, just Kaspersky Internet Security 2016

          • BK

Hm.. so the thing is – O36 should auto update, for about page should no tell you opera is up to date. Have you tried pressing f5 on opera:about page?
You can try to disable Kaspersky and open opera:about page again, and try to reload the page again (f5) ?

It might be, that Kaspersky have blocked installation of the auto update process, we will investigate that on Monday.

          • Fonksta

So I tried pressing f5 on the opera:about page and it still tells me that I’m up to date! Same situation with the disabled Kaspersky… 🙁

          • dCost

Hi, have you tried enabling the flag “Update notifications”?

I used to get bored of waiting for the update to arrive, probably because of the language or the location it took longer… I don’t know, but since I enabled this feature it updates right after accessing the about page.

          • Fonksta

Hi! Just tried it and it still tells me up to date 🙁
It’s frustrating, Vivaldi and Chrome do update via the about page, just Opera doesn’t!

          • BK

Thanks for checking! If you are still interested in digging into this topic, next step is:
Please open task manager, and try to notice if while reload of opera:about page there is opera_crashreporter.exe or very similar process name showing up in the process list? (task manager->details tab)

          • Fonksta

Thank you for your feedback, but I gave up and uninstalled Opera and reinstalled it with the online installer. I think the problem lies in Opera itself, so you might check that out, as I also had the same problem with the last few versions. And as mentioned this only happens with opera, not with chrome nor with vivaldi. Keep up the good work and have a nice day!

          • BK

Thanks for cooperation and happy browsing with Opera !

          • Leonardo Gomes

Opera also does but, as said, something must be broken in your profile/installation.

          • Fonksta

I deleted my profile folder and the cache folder, it didn’t solve the problem 🙁

          • Leonardo Gomes

Do it again and reinstall Opera 36 using this offline installer

          • Fonksta

Huh, just tried it with this offline installer and before I synchcronized, as I always do, I opened the about opera page and it told me it was a new version available and I updated via the about opera page! Don’t know if the synchronizing was the issue or the fact that I custom installed with both options unchecked (send information to opera and import data from standard browser). Hopefully the issue is now solved! Thank you very much Leonardo!

          • Leonardo Gomes

What is happening when you try to update? Do you get any error message?

  • Matheus Bitencourt

Is there a way to sign RSS in this blog?
I want to receive RSS through Smart RSS (Opera extension) from this blog in order to be aware about the newest builds available the faster possible.

I Like a LOT the Video Pop Up feature. But until today a lot of web pages use Flash Player (like ESPN Play / News Sites, etc). Is it possible to support this kind of videos in later releases?

  • I have been testing the Opera Mac version and it’s pretty fast! Can’t wait to get my hands on the iPhone/iPad version! Will we have the VPN feature on iOS also?!

    • L33t4opera

Hi, Opera has just released the OperaVPN app for iOS, you can read more about it in this post.

  • Kathleen M Pearson

How about a feature to disable gifs?

Opera Help reads: If you want to disable animated images, such as GIF and SVG animations, and display them as ordinary graphics, go to Settings > Quick Preferences and uncheck Enable Animated Images. To enable them, check this option.

Alternate menu path: Settings > Preferences > Advanced > Content and check the “Enable Animated Images” checkbox.

Opera 37.0 does not offer Preferences or Quick Preferences. Can anyone help?

    • Leonardo Gomes

That help page is for old Opera Presto. There is no way to disable animated gifs on Opera Blink unless, maybe, by the use of an extension.

      • Kathleen M Pearson

Thank you! I haven’t been successful finding an extension but will keep looking. Perhaps Opera should update their Help pages!

  • Harry

Apologies if this is not the correct forum, but how do I start Opera with the Sidebar always activated? The regular Opera forums are of no help.

    • PJMZR

What do You mean “always activated”? When you use Ctrl+Shift+S Sidebar is activated and should be active all the time unless you use Ctrl+Shitft+S again to turn off this feature.

  • pueblofunky

Hi, normally on e.g. http://www.spielaffe.de/Spiel/Goodgame-Empire/ when you press “Jetzt spielen”, a new page starts and a promotion video runs first and then the game will be shown. When block ads is activated, the promotion video does not start – and finally also not the game. Any solution?

Our children use a small old netbook via WLAN – if this would work it would improve loading the site.

    • RafaellaG

If you really want to use this site, then the only choice is, to disable the ad blocker for this site. You can add this site in the exceptions in the ad block settings .

      • pueblofunky

Thanks a lot – yes I’ve added it to the exception list of course. I’m not an expert but maybe its possible to add an option which “ad system” should be enabled/disabled on which site? E.g. normal banners yes – but not this video banner?

        • RafaellaG

I’m not an expert myself and only a user but I think it will be very complicated to identify this or that ad and act accordingly.
You know that Opera uses Easylist (and EasyPrivacy) for blocking. You can look into this file https://easylist-downloads.adblockplus.org/easylist.txt . That is what Easylist contains. It’s only a list of different filters and there’s no intelligent “system” behind it. So how should Opera know what you want to block or not. It only blocks all items in the list.

Maybe other users or Opera team has more insight in this thematic and can explain it further to you.

PS. And before you ask: I’m only a user with a lot of time (for now) and a passion for Opera^^

  • Konstantin Paramonov

    • Kornelia

The test is a real time measurement that depends on a lot of factors: network traffic, the amount & type of ads you receive and even on the way website handles the situation when the ad cannot be loaded. No situations like that might sometimes appear.

  • ShintoPlasm

I have found the solution to a problem I’ve been complaining about on this blog for some time. FYI, Malwarebytes’ Anti-Exploit (free version) caused Opera to delay the opening of a new tab and connecting to a new website for a few seconds each time. Basically, whenever I’d enter a new URL into the address bar, or open a link in a new tab, 3-4 seconds would pass before Opera started connecting to the website. When I disabled Anti-Exploit completely, this behaviour has disappeared and Opera now connects to all websites instantly.

Not sure why MBAE caused this on my specific system config (it didn’t on a second laptop), but the dev team should be aware that some conflicts may exist between Opera and MBAE.

    • Konstantin Paramonov

I wouldn’t blame MBAE specifically. On my antivirus free machine Blink has always been connecting with delay *comparatively* to any other engine. Any other engine does the job quicker.

      • ShintoPlasm

In my specific case, both Chrome and Vivaldi work fine without any noticeable delay. Opera is the only Blink browser that misbehaves as described above…

    • Davey126

I was able to duplicate MBAE finding on an older (yet still very responsive) i3 machine running Win 10 Defender. Disabling MBAE all but eliminated the delay loading a new tab in Opera. In contrast Edge and IE loaded pages fine with MBAE enabled. I was not able to duplicate findings with Webroot Secure Anywhere; page loads began nearly instantly regardless of MBAE status. So the interaction *may* be isolated to Opera, MBAE and Windows Defender. The effect is less noticeable on more powerful hardware.

  • Nekomajin43

Guys, how about adding the RAM consumption to the adblock speed test page?

    • Kornelia

I forwarded your suggestion to adblock team 🙂 DNA-53786

  • D4rius

The new ad-block feature is great, however it could be even better if you add the possibility for it to work with the blacklist approach rather than the whitelist one. I personally don’t mind ads on a web page, as long as they’re not too much intrusive

  • Davey126

Possibly reported (sorry): appears the integrated adblocker may have an issue with product images on eBay. Search for anything and the initial results rendering is fine. A few seconds later the page refreshes and the top most image in the results listing is partially blocked. Disable ad blocking for the site, refresh and all good.

  • pidgin

I just want to report that opera (stable) displays forum.bodybuilding.com completely wrong. Does not login/out properly. For 3 days forum.bodybuilding.com/forumdisplay.php?f=19&order=desc page displayed the exact same forum threads for me (did not update them, not post counts in those threads) even after I shift+refreshed it to clear cache.

    Back to firefox for now.

    • RafaellaG

Not all pages work well with ad blocking. No matter, if it’s Opera internal, uBlock, Adblock Plus, etc. (Same as some sites don’t work without cookies).

If the site doesn’t work right with ad blocking enabled, you can whitelist the specific page in > settings > basic > Block ads (Manage Exceptions…).
      Something like [*.]bodybuilding.com.

      • pidgin

        I see, thanks

      • SiMcarD

You can also install Violent Monkey with Anti-Ad block Killer script.

        • RafaellaG

You can, but the point is, to use NO ADDITIONAL ad blocker but the internal.

          • SiMcarD

This script works also with the native ad-blocker.

          • RafaellaG

Yes I believe you, but the goal is for us users (and Opera) that we don’t need any additional extension(s).

          • Jack Lewis

So if the add blocker is messing up the site… you can take the adds or use another browser…. though decision… well no, not really.

          • RafaellaG

I dare say that for every ad blocker there are some sites out there that don’t work with them enabled.
Sure, there’s also always a solution out there for the problem.

But the GOAL is to not need any ADDITIONAL solution or at least as few as possible. That’s what I meant.

          • Jack Lewis

As far as goals go… it seems a bit weak. There are plenty of great ad blockers out there and installing one takes like 15 seconds…
And considering how adds how what funds a lot of site, the idea of bundling the add blocker in the browser is a bit strange.
I’d just settle if the last upgrade hadn’t forced that turbo mode on and made the browser not work with anything until I saw what it had done. In the past it’s constant messing up with my speed dial on updates was not very impressive either.

Hi ! Thank you so much for the good work! I’m using opera for 15 years and never change it to another browser. But since new version arrived with a lot to offer the one problem I can’t solve – ymp files for opensuse. Try click the green button:

    https://software.opensuse.org/package/opera?search_term=opera

see what will happen. It should at least ask to save the file, or open in a designated program. Instead opera treats it as a txt file? Please, can you fix this? It’s so annoying that to install software in this way I have to use Firefox :(.

  • VienLa

If I had a website which relies on ads to survive I’d block Opera users as soon as that feature would be rolled out.

Firefox appears to be the fastest and with less memory consumption.

  • yessuz

Amm, one question – how to add additional blocks/elements to Opera blocker in which would let it block that element???

  • monkeyfish

Is there any way to filter by the type of ads, rather than the page? I’m not against advertising, just against the use of bandwidth intensive video ads, or annoying pop-over or roll-over ads. If it’s just text or a clickable image, then I’m fine with seeing them. That’s probably the way to go if you’re not going to be accused of destroying the web’s main source of income.

  • Jack Lewis

This is probably the worst browser auto-update I’ve ever had….
I can’t load virtually any web page in Opera anymore (including this opera blog for god’s sake). Works on all other browsers… but nope Opera doesn’t even show a loading page… it simply does NOTHING.
    Wow!

HELP, I have Opera 38. I activate the Ad Blocker and added exception for http://www.pch.com – [*.]pch.com – and all works ok except for 2 websites for pch. they are http://www.pch.com/games & /slots & slots?source=slots – When I click on any of these 3 for them to open, a screen popups saying that I had an ad blocker enabled. – None of the other pch websites, screens, etc. do this.
How Can I FIX these? – Or am I going to have to reinstall Fox. Thanks.

    • Bets

NOW the AdBlocker is blocking ads on MORE of the pch tabs.

The Ad Blocker is an essential feature and the main reason why I still use Opera Presto. The function appears to work as promised. However, I could not construct my own custom list for filtering items that are not on the ad list yet, or are not necessarily ads, but are still unwanted for reasons like animation or CPU load.

I would like to see a concise help document for the expected format of a custom list (it should be linked next to the button under Settings), and an easier way to reload the list (currently I must remove it and browse to add it again). Perhaps the Shield dialog could have a small button for reloading custom lists if they have been defined. Another button could also launch Notepad with the list.

There should be a practical way to add and remove blocked items. I do not think that the Chrome’s Web UI is performant or compact enough to show a list of 50 or more blocks. (Not even Presto’s UI was fast enough.) I see the following way: copy an url from Inspector, click Shield and then Edit, paste the url into Notepad, as soon as it terminates, Opera reloads the list. Or skip Notepad and show a view-source-like color coded view instead (but it would be slower).

I also observe that the lines I added resulted in outgoing requests to servers while the pictures they returned were hidden. Invalid URLs matching the mask returned the server’s error message. I would like to be able to block this url mask altogether to further save time and traffic; and see a blank screen or text message like in Opera Presto.

The example custom list I tried is the following.

    [Adblock Plus 2.0]
    example.com/path/*240×400*

If there is a control symbol that instructs Opera to download nothing at all from the path, then I would like the help document to mention it.

In Opera Presto only one line with wildcards was necessary to block everything.

    Doesent work on Youtube anymore.

    • Brian

Yes it does. I get no ads on youtube using the Native Opera ad blocker.

  • Well, super feature that blocks my own autocomplete requests if specific words are used, like ‘counter’. Now I have to write a script telling every Opera user to switch to another browser…

    • Leonardo Gomes

What do you mean by ‘my own autocomplete requests’?

If you think that the ad blocker is not behaving well, you can report it.

BTW, does it work with ublock?

      • Well, someone types into a search bar, the JS does an asynchronous request to my own SSL secured domain to fetch JSON, Opera blocks these requests if they contain specific words like ‘counter’.

I’ve tried to find a report tool, but it’s nowhere to be found. I can create a local exception, but that’s no use for the site users.

        Yes, it works with ublock.

You can do it here by commenting on a more recent post and explaining the problem with more details as possible or you can use the bug report wizard: https://bugs.opera.com/wizard/desktop
