Hello,

With Opera 36, we are giving you even more enhancements for your favorite browser :). Highlights include better support for Windows 10, more customization on the start page and nicer handling of extensions in the toolbar, for those of you who use a lot of them.

Refreshed start page

opera_36_main

We’ve updated the style of our top UI. The start-page navigation panel has been moved to the left, to optimize the horizontal space on popular widescreen monitors. We’re also responding to your requests for more customization power over Speed Dial – in the top-right corner, you will find the “Customize start page” cogwheel option, which allows you to change themes and customize the news section in one place. If you select “Show advanced options” from opera://settings, the start-page configuration will show even more settings – give it a try! Of course, this is not the end of our customization enhancements, more are coming in Opera 37.

Modern-app-like browsing on Windows 10

The UI has changed even more for our Windows 10 users. Opera now blends with the system, changing colors across the application to match its style.

To see it in action, make sure you have recent OS updates (Windows 10, Threshold 2) and then go to in opera://settings ->Browsing -> User interface and select “Show system color on top bar”.

color-off-and-on2

Opera now adapts to your input method to  make life easier for those of you using touch. With touch input, it will automatically increase the size of toolbar items and all context menus, plus it will give you a new icon for the fullscreen move, exactly like modern apps do.

We’ve also added some cool-looking graphics to make our style blend better with the native Windows 10 style.

Opera vs other browsers

Unlike other browsers, we try to keep Opera’s UI as close to the platform as possible.

Unlike Firefox, for example, we offer Windows 10 users native notifications, touch-mode support, the fullscreen icon and bigger context menus for touchscreens, as well as an option to switch to system colors.

SM.compare

And, unlike Edge, Opera allows you to enhance and customize your browsing experience through extensions, including sidebar and Speed Dial extensions. To handle many extensions, using toolbar icons in Opera 36, we’ve added an expander.

extension-toolbar-expander1

Plus, we have animated themes that look just great on Windows 10.

We have not written much about news being available on Speed Dial in this release. We are still working on changing this feature, but you can check out what we’ve done so far in this release and share your feedback with us about how it’s working for you.

Happy browsing.

Edge will have extensions from the next build probably, so…

    • BK

      so ?

      • Matteo Contrini

So it’s hard to say which browser is the best one 🙂

        • Cryio

Given Edge will probably get the ability to use extensions only starting in June, with Redstone 1, I’d say Opera doesn’t need to worry much.

        • Mikolaj Boc

And then, they’ll need at least 4 years to fix the API and actually get some extensions.

  • L33t4opera

Hi Błażej, thanks for the article, and congrats to the Developers on the promotion of Opera 36 to the stable channel 😉

  • Cryio

“The best browser for Windows 10”

2 out of 4 images are with Opera on Windows 7, lol.

    • Aneta Reluga

Windows 7 is also liked and supported. 🙂

      • Cryio

Appreciating the love for W10 😛

        • Aneta Reluga

          Love does not exclude 😛

    • BK

Win 7 is till the most popular OS out there 🙂

    • xirit64

      2 out of 7 mate.

      • Cryio

3 out of 6 are with the W10 version, I mean.

  • Cryio

Let’s see how v36 performs on a Surface Pro.

  • Cyrris

Fantastic GUI improvements in this release, well done.

Niggle: When I have scrolled down a fair way in News on my speed dial, it’s a bit onerous to get back to my speed dial at the top once I’m done. A “return to top” arrow/button on the side would be nice. I could open a new tab I suppose, but that seems wasteful.

    • BK

Thanks. We are working for much more “news” changes in Opera 38, stay tuned in developer channel 🙂

  • ktxgio

    thanks for new release!
cannot modify Speed Dials list – entires in jumplist on Win10 x64
if i delete some entires from jumplist Opera does not replace it with others that are in Speed Dial homepage (have 34 “tiles” in Speed Dial homepage)

  • Bali505

Oh Wow! Thank you very much indeed, Opera Team! ☺

  • Davide Repetto

    Hello,
    Thanks for the new release!
My font defaults are all changed up, is that just me? (I Mean, under linux, the rendering seems to be different as well)

    • Davide Repetto

      Yep! That’s it.
Subpixel font rendering is gone in the Linux Version.
Can you bring it back asap, please?

      • Aneta Reluga

Can you please show the screenshot comparison and mention your Linux version? Thanks!

        • Davide Repetto

I’d gladly do the screenshot comparison but I can’t seem to find the previous stable Anywhere. Can you point me where I can download the last “opera-stable-35” (.0.2066.92-0.x86_64) rpm?
As per the linux version I’m On Fedora 23 64bit.

        • Davide Repetto

Scratch my previous comment, I found the latest Opera-35 RPM in the russian-fedora koji instance. Now downloading…
I’ll be back with the screenshots.

  • Piotrooo

Thanks man! When could we expect native ad blocker in stable channel?

    • BK

Opera 37 is the plan 🙂

      • Piotrooo

        Great!

      • http://giuseppeattanasio.com master94ga

Adblocker need a function to add blacklist page where it is autodisabled

        • BK

blacklist autodisabled? you mean – whitelist?

          • http://giuseppeattanasio.com master94ga

            Yes, whitelist 😉

          • Jaiba Mon

Yeah, so far there isn’t a good ad blocking extension that works with a whitelist.

Suggesting a whitelist is good because, you will only block pages that are annoying with the ads, but allowing the rest, thus helping these pages to get revenue.

  • Krzysztof Iracki

I work on Windows 7 on daily basis. And from my perspective Opera 36 looks great! I truly appreciate improved animations and the smoothness when I switch from Speed Dial to Bookmarks. Additionally, new design of Speed Dial is a great move forward. Hope to see much more this year. Great work Opera!

    • BK

      thanks!

  • zakius

till you fix issues mentioned by me under last post there’s no way for chropera to be the best
better than chrome? sure, but that’s not a challenge
    the best? absolutely not

  • iYuzver

Chrome.

    • Kornelia

      English please.

      • Ich Bin Deine Tod

        The synchronization icon was gone

        • BK

          Yes. Do you miss it?

          • Ich Bin Deine Tod

Just this icon was for convenience, and it is such feature or a bug?

          • BK

We are cleaning top UI. This icon is set to be displayed only when needed – if everything is working fine, or you are not using sync, it will not be visible.

          • Nekomajin43

Still no option to remove/add/move buttons on the toolbar…

        • José Alberto

what a mess…. what icon is out? the green check or gray person icon? I prefer use old version -1 in this case 35 I´m not patient

          • Ich Bin Deine Tod

            gray person icon

      • iYuzver

Sorry, but I do not know English. I’ve never studied. I have listed a function without which it would be difficult for Opera to be one of the best browsers. So far, it is very much in functionality loses to Chinese analogs. But I really like the Opera its visual design, animation, built-in image display in the middle.

It would be very desirable to see in the future:

        2. An opportunity to display bookmarks with columns. (I just can not live without it, I have 6000 bookmarks and hundreds of folders.)
        4. Take the opportunity to hide “+” to the Favorites Bar.
        5. The ability to disable the Windows system tray, selecting Chrome notice.
        6. Possibility of change of an order of display of icons of expansions to control panels.

We are sorry for the machine translation.

        • BK

          thanks.
4 is already available in Opera 37.
2 – not sure, have you checked the options in bookmarks manager?

          • iYuzver

            4. In version 37 make it possible to hide the “+” on the homepage and not on the Favorites bar.
            2. Bookmarks with columns:
            http://pixs.ru/showimage/2016031515_1986757_21114146.jpg

          • BK

Ah, right. OK. I will see what we can do about it.

          • iYuzver

Opera does not work with chinese social networking service “Weibo”. It does not work login.(((

  • http://giuseppeattanasio.com master94ga

The news UI for windows 10 is cool but doesn’t look the best… Icon like the download, or the reload doesn’t look very defined, also the tab menu or the Opera icon in top left are not the best.

  • iPristy

Good, clearing history works before was stuck in 35 and lower version on my slow system.

Using router interface works, before was crashing in 34 i think.

Plus button will be gone in 37 i think, great.

Disabling search box on speed dial, great.

All i want now is function to refresh speed dial, with F5 or right mouse click on speed dial thumbnail and refresh or reload, what ever you prefer like in Opera 12.

    That will be all…

  • Falconet

So, Twitter video playback is gone… again, on Linux.
Also the downloads button is no longer visible in the bar.

    • Kornelia

If this is h264 video it won’t work unfortunately. We’re aware of this and it’s already fixed internally as https://bugs.opera.com/browse/DNA-49204.

      • Falconet

So only on a future update then?

      • Rômulo

We need a update for this fast.

  • Юлия
    • Ghirahim

      Ugly.

    • Jaiba Mon

I don’t know what are you trying to prove. That screenshot shows Firefox using Aero yet the store of the address bar hasn’t nothing to do with the Windows 7 UI style.

I have tried with some extensions to make Firefox looks like Windows. Stylish is amazing yet every Windows skin has one or two bugs, specially with opponent tabs. There are two extension that changes the notifications for native ones, but these are usually broken because Firefox like to break their support with each update.

      • Юлия

That Firefox has native windows 10 -like UI for over a year. It also allows you to choose between light and dark mode.
Here is how it looks on Windows 10: https://i.imgur.com/k0zRa0u.jpg
The default blue one looks native on Windows 7. It even uses the fog effect that is found on Office 2010.

Claiming that Firefox does not look native on either Windows 7 and 10 is false advertising.

I like Opera, a lot, don’t get me wrong. I’ve been using it since.. 2000 something when I had my first PC, I also have it on my phone. But I hate the bold claim look how great we are on this platform, unlike that browser that is worse than ours which had this functionality for a year.

        • Jaiba Mon

The dark theme you are referencing is the Developer Edition theme and it’s not available in the stable version. It also hasn’t nothing to do with the Windows 10 style. Both light and dark versions of the Firefox theme aren’t well integrated to the system. If I change the Window Border color of Windows, Firefox doesn’t change with the system, something Chrome and Opera can do.

Also, Firefox for Windows 10 still maintains the rounded, “aerodynamic” tabs that doesn’t look good on the system, who relies on straight lines and squares. It looks good on the 2009’s Windows, but not now.

Opera is the only one who not only has an integrated look on Windows 10, it also shows notifications using the Windows 10 notifications. These kind of things are features that are clearly superior to Firefox and it’s ok to compare them.

Also Opera does this for both OSX and Ubuntu, so the browser always looks good.

          • Юлия

In those screenshots it’s the version 45 which is stable.

  • Ronaldje

Nice to see that Opera gets better every version. The Opera desktop browser is unfortunately not usable for daily usage for me, due to the fact that it lacks a rather elementary (at least in my opinion) feature: being able to drag and drop URLs from the Opera Address bar to the desktop (or any other folder). Let me explain the use case. When doing research, I would like to save links to webpages in a certain (shared) folder, so others can check these websites too. In other browsers, one can drag and drop the link to a folder, but unfortunately this is not possible with Opera. Thanks in advance for implementing this feature. Keep up the good work!

    • iPristy

You can drag drop speed dial link to desktop.

      • xirit64

I wonder if Opera’s 28 bookmark sharing is still working 😛

  • Jason Coplen

My flash player on Linux ain’t out of date. I don’t know what you did, other than wreck flash on Opera, but it’s a bad move. Your beta and developer have been failing at this, so fix it or risk becoming obsolete on Linux.

    • Kornelia

      Please install adobe-flashplugin package – version 21.0.0.182

      • Jason Coplen

I fixed it. There’s a problem on Debian Linux when pepperflash is installed.

  • Michael van Dam

Is anyone else having jumpy texts on the speed dial? see my example:
https://streamable.com/altk ; whenever I hover over an item the text needs to re-render or something

    – EDIT:
Restarting opera seems to have fixed the issue..

  • Kartofel

You mention sidebar extensions, i like them(made few for myself) but for now there to cumbersome to access. Bring back the edge toggle and maybe they’ll become more popular.

  • Nekomajin43

WOW, I can see the light at the end of the tunnel!
    I’m glad you’ve admitted that a few settings won’t hurt. 😉

But, I really don’t understand the difference in the opacity between the navbar and the sidebar of the internal pages. It looks ugly. Why can’t you use the same opacy for the navbar?

    • BK

      Thanks:)
      ps.
” I can see the light at the end of the tunnel!” – we will make sure it’s not the train 😉

      • Nekomajin43

Well, if it is the feature train… 😀

        • BK

hey, I’m the teasing one here :p

  • Rafael

It was finally released the final version of Opera 36. I’m really happy to have the pleasure of using this version. Congratulations to all developers changed my Google Chrome for Opera in this release.

    • BK

Thanks! Out of curiosity, why have you been waiting for so long with the change?

      • Rafael

I found the Opera 36 final a more stable and fast version for Windows 10 than the other versions released. There were still some bugs and a delay to load the sites and is not my internet because I have 30MB connection. =)

        • BK

          Thanks!

          • Rafael

            You’re welcome

          • Rafael

But using the Opera 36 stable end I still realize that page loading bug at the address still continues. It’s not my internet because I have 30MB connection and this problem does not occur in other browsers. Once again I am uninstalling my Opera and turning to Microsoft Edge / Chrome but thanks to developers.

          • Mikolaj Boc

What kind of problem would that be? Would you be able to report it?

          • Rafael

It’s complicated reporting this issue here, but thanks for the help.

        • Vux777

opera purposely delays loading of tabs if you open more of them at once (eg. middle click on bookmarks bar folder etc)
          is that what you meant?

          • Rafael

Not this deley occurs when I enter a new site in a new tab and enter the grip it takes too long to connect to the server and show me the site, while in other browsers it occurs instantly

          • Vux777

I didn’t noticed slower loading compared to other browsers (except when it’s forced by Opera)
Could be a cache thing, or maybe some extensions/plugins

          • Rafael

I have extensions or plugins and I will try to erase everything and reset all factory settings and perform the test again. Thanks

          • Vux777

the easiest way to test it is to open private window and see how loading of pages behaves
extensions (if not explicitly allowed) are disabled in private browsing

  • Deyan Aleksandrov

    Hey Opera team!

A nice update and a nice beginning of the morning with Opera 36 🙂
Just one little question – can I hide the share button on OS X? I’ve
been looking through the flags, but couldn’t find the setting. Some
    help would be highly appreciated.

    Cheers!

    • https://vivaldi.net/unity/profile/chas4/6-blog Chas4

That does sound like a good idea (most of the share menu is social media) as not everyone would use the button, might have an option in the settings

  • https://vivaldi.net/unity/profile/chas4/6-blog Chas4

    Opera 36 updat.ed

  • Jaiba Mon

That’s why I love this browser, the integration with the system is so well done. Congrats for new version, you guys are awesome.

Although you should add a share button on Windows 10 too, just like OSX, just like any modern app.

Another suggestion would be being able to sort the extensions, and to change or remove the default search engines. I would like to remove the Yahoo shortcut “y” to use it on YouTube.

EDIT: I have to add, thanks for adding native smooth scrolling!

    • Mikolaj Boc

      Thanks for those kind words.

About the share button, yes, we were of course thinking about introducing that, but we have some technical problems with it. Could be circumventable maybe, checking.

About the others, I’ll probably let Błażej have his say.

      • duhduhduh0

How do I remove the Share button in Mac?

There used to be a flag to disable it and it is gone now.

    • VfBFan

+ sort the custom search engines in alphabetically order (context menu).

  • nicks

Updated… and WOW just WOW! Good job guys!

  • blue_screen

untranslated strings (german): “Go to browser settings” (on speed dial) and “Show advanced settings” (settings->browser).
It is no longer possible to zoom in on speed dial, but not to zoom in on booksmarks page. As the result, speed dial tiles are too small (on 100 %) and bookmark tiles are too big (on 100 %). Page zoom set to 90 % on bookmarks and 110% on speed dial would be fine.
Tiles on news page are too big: I see only 4 tiles! Under the tiles it says “undefined” – not very useful.

can anyone see flash videos or audio embeded to websites in this version?
I could see them in beta and dev, but not stable
e.g http://www.politico.com/blogs/on-media/2016/03/transcript-corey-lewandowski-breitbart-reporter-attack-220589 can’t see the flash in stable, but available in beta and dev

    • albert71292

Working fine here in the newest stable.

      • oic

i’m using latest/newest stable as well, dont see it, the top bit is empty

  • SLR

Hi, is the No theme overlay flag supposed to work/have an effect?

    • BK

Yeah, but it needs some theme configuration changes, please ask on developer stream 🙂

  • Kenny

    Smooth scrolling implemented?
When I tick advanced setting icon in speed dial, then tick News – News icon dissappers from speed dial and vice versa.

    • Vux777

yes, because it’s either on speed dial or as dedicated page
      not both

      edit: smooth scrolling works

  • Mancomb Seepgood

Could you add an fade to black effect when going in and out fullscreen in a video player, similar to the one in Firefox?

  • Spideymang

Thank you for this update Opera team!!! I’m your fan since ver 25 realese. Good job, I love it, the most amazing thing is the extension expander I was waiting for it.

        It doesn’t work

  • sgrandin

Look forward to the next beta to see these changes in Win 8.1, especially to the Speed Dial (running public and beta versions on the same partition is a recipe for problems). Do the Speed Dial changes or user options include smaller thumbnails, as well as scaling the number of thumbnails visible as set by the user to the window instead vice versa, so it’s actually usable by those with more than several thumbnails who don’t want the Opera window to take up the full monitor screen?

Others items still on my list to get me over from Opera 12.18:
    – Start page button = user set Home page (or option to set it that way)
    – tabs on bottom (user setting)
    – scalable printing/previewing w/in the program

I would think only the latter should take any work (and a change in thinking?). Absent that change, without the ability to modify the Address Bar to add buttons such as InFF or inIE as a workaround, the new Opera remains operationally crippled for me vs. Opera 12 (and others who need to print web pages here and there).

    • BK

      Hi!
we are working on tabs enhancements, but rather they will be available, on the side, than on the bottom.
Also we are looking to add options where reasonable, like Start Page (thanks for pointing out few topics).

      • sgrandin

Why not the bottom too, where the taskbar commonly is in Windows for those that don’t use the Metro screen? Which is a whole lot of people, last I heard.

Should I infer that scalable printing is considered unreasonable now in Operaland? Opera 12 has a version of it, though cumbersome.

        • BK

Sidebar tabs give real value in terms of widescreen monitors utilization.
ATM we are not working on scalable printing and it’s not on the short term roadmap either.

I have a 24″ 1920×1200 monitor, which I’d call wide, and side tabs for me are worth even less than a wooden nickel (US). The thinking of the post changeover Opera staff continues to be peculiar, to say the least.

          • BK

I have the same 24″ 1920×1200 monitor, and I’m happy with default tabs placement, until the list of open tabs grow above 15. Above that point tabs area start to becoming hard to use. Horizontally I expect to have very good overview for twice that many tabs.

          • Stanislav Stratil

You can always use drop down menu in the upper right, if you have too many tabs… I find this solution acceptable.

I guess, I wouldnt be one of those, who will use tabs on the side.

          • Herr Pietrus

That’s one of these ideas I’ll never understand. Tabs on the side? Because the monitor is wide? Who is using maximized web browser on all these modern huge and so wide 16:9 screens? 🙂 I haven’t seen many 16:9 websites 😛

      • Nekomajin43

2nd big surprise? Or you have a 3rd too? 😀

        • Leonardo Gomes

          Why not a 4th, a 5th or even a 6th? 😀

  • Nico

Thank you so much for the new default Theme on Windows 10, it looks beautiful!

However, you did forget to style the design of context menus on the Speed Dial page. It still looks like Windows Vista. Please fix 🙂

    • BK

      Good spot, thanks 🙂

      • Rufflow

I was gonna post the same thing. 🙂

Also why are the tabs slighty rounded? Windows 10 doesn’t use curves in their UI design 🙂

  • Herr Pietrus

Great job, final version of the first really good Opera on Blink. I hope that some day youll add also bookmarks list on the main bar, active edge to open and close sidebar using mouse and Smart RSS as a bundled extension 😉

What would be the difference? And why it should be as in your suggestion?

      • Vlad

Man, are you stupid or pretending? O__O

        • Leonardo Gomes

Well, I am not the one who can’t realise that my comments are useless because I can’t simply explain what I am trying to say/show.

Also, I’m not the one with lots of spare time trying to turn Opera into another browser.

          • Vlad

I don’t speak English, so it’s easier for me to show it on a screenshot than to explain something.

            P. S. Actually, from now on, I will ignore you! NERD!!!

          • Tommy Wille

Don’t call him a nerd, you might never lose him. Revenge of the Nerd Part 6.

          • Leonardo Gomes

Understood but you need to try to better show your point and when suggesting something you need to show why it would be better for the users.

          • Vlad

I do not owe anything to anyone!

          • Leonardo Gomes

Maybe, but if you want your suggestion to be taken in consideration, you need to show why they are useful.

Otherwise, you most probably will be just wasting your time.

          • Vlad

By the screenshots all so perfectly clear. If you don’t see it, that’s your problem, not mine. It seems that you are one big bore!
Don’t want to waste my time talking to you. Go away!!!

  • Michal Smrž

Okay, I just installed 36, I like new features (keep ’em comin’!), but I am note able to get those coloured tabs to work. I’ve set those system colour tabs in Settings, but they are still grey no matter what (and I have changing W10 colour schemes, definitely not grey). What’s wrong?

    • Tommy Wille

Just to be sure, you’ve enabled “Show color on start, taskbar and action center” in Windows settings?

      • Fałek

Same problem. Windows colors not working in new version (everything was ok in 35)

        O36: http://imgur.com/ezDAVFG

        O35: http://imgur.com/16axr0R

How to solve it: switch off and switch on again colors on bars in Windows settings (few times) than minimalize and maximalize Opera. Should work.

Btw. this new back and forward arrows and speed dial buttons are awful in new version.

        • Fałek

And seems bigger. Well, whole bar seems too big compared to tabs bar.

        • Tommy Wille

Update your windows 10 installation. I think you might not have the big update from few months ago thats the one that should fix this.

          • Michal Smrž

Ok, will do, because right now I am on my notebook, which is barely used these days, so it will have an obsolete version of W10. Thanks for a tip.

          • Michal Smrž

Yeah, that helped eventually. Thanks for a tip!

      • Michal Smrž

        Yeah, I did.

  • Łukasz

New version is impressive, look is nicely composed with Windows 10 but you should still work on some aspects related to tablet mode and use with touch screens:
    – MS Edge is so much smoother when it comes to scrolling with finger, it is just much better experience to use it in this regard
    – there’s no double tap zoom in Opera which in Edge allows to zoom easily part of text, could it be implemented?
    – Reading mode in MS Edge is a great feature for tablet use and it works well most of the times, Opera should also have such feature
    – On-screen keyboard doesn’t activate automatically in Opera, no matter what text field
    – On-screen keyboard when activated manually doesn’t support words prediction like in Edge
    – icon for Opera pinned to start screen has white background so it doesn’t look nice compared to all the other icons which adapts themselves to system colour

Those are essential things which browser should have to be comfortably used on tablets. I hope you can add them in the future

  • Marián Varaga

I see only ugly grey top bar or ugly system color top bar, no system color bar like other programs/windows 🙁
    http://jpeg.im/61h4

    • Mikolaj Boc

I’m afraid I can’t quite get what you mean. You would like us to look like Windows Explorer?

      • Marián Varaga

yes and no. No like windows explorer, it was just example. Yes, like all windows apps. look at top bar, it is white with blue border, like all apps and opera 35 too (i am not sure about blue border, but it was white).

  • John Boehner Vaegina

Once again extension icons don’t load when Opera is started up in private mode. It’s been mentioned countless times and hasn’t been fixed. “Oh but look, new themes!!!” I’m going to give this browser one more major update and then I’m trashing it.

    • BK

Hi, didn’t anyone mentioned before that extension by default do not launch in private mode? This is for the privacy reasons.
Please go to extensions manger and pick the ones you would like to use in private mode. Solved?

      • John Boehner Vaegina

They have been set to run in private mode. Are you guys incapable of testing it out yourself? I shouldn’t have to explain it a million times. It was even mentioned in your forums, but no one seemed to care.

Steps: Enable the extensions to run in private mode, make sure they’re set to display in the toolbar, run Opera with the “–private” switch.
Result: no extension icons in the toolbar.

It’s simple. Can one of you developers just try it to confirm…and then do something about it!?

        • Davey126

Just tried this – yup, it fails (not that you needed any confirmation). Hopefully this ends up as a formal bug report that gets addressed in a future version.

          • John Boehner Vaegina

Here’s the thing. It’s been submitted at least twice, as far as I know. And in both cases it was submitted months ago.

    • https://vivaldi.net/unity/profile/chas4/6-blog Chas4

On opera://extensions/ you have to set it to allow “Allow in private mode” for each extension you want to have loaded in private mode.

      • John Boehner Vaegina

I’m aware of that. The extensions are set to load in private mode, but their icons do not load when you start Opera with the “–private” switch.

  • K.K.VinayKumar

Most of the websites think Opera as a mobile phone browser which display their mobile version of the site.
Eg. Bing Image search always shows their mobile version when using Opera but when using Edge or Internet Explorer or any other browser for that matter they always show their desktop version.

    • BK

thanks for the report, we will contact them 🙂

  • Pavel

From your posts I never understand – is it release or another future version promo post. Checked version right now – got an update for 35, checking again – “35.0.2066.92 – An error occurred while checking for updates”

    • BK

Hi. We are doing gradual releases, that means – you might receive automatic update to the recent version in about few days. If you like to test it right now, just download recent version from opera.com 🙂

      • Pavel

it is not really about version downloading.

How can i disable now theme for Windows 10?

    • RafaellaG

Do you mean this “opera://flags/#windows-10-skin” (set it to disabled)?
Or do you really mean the theme (background wallpaper)?

      • Ariane Lu

Yes, Thank you, i mean ‘new theme ‘…. not ‘now theme’…

  • ariane89

Settings > Browser > ‘Show advanced settings’ ,
Settings > Private & Safe > ‘Predict network actions to improve page load performance’

Still not translate into Chinese, I think this should not happen in stable release.

  • Pavel

With those new dark-almost-black folder icons on boormarks bar – browser looks really depressing… 🙁 http://clip2net.com/s/3vCMy9U

    • Herr Pietrus

      No, it’s stylish now 🙂

  • Alex

Thanks for release! Though I have very annoying issue in this build: swipe left and right doesn’t work for me on os x (as navigation “back” and “forward”). I just can see overscroll instead of navigation. In previous stable build I didn’t have such issue. I tried to restart browser, but this didn’t help.

    • Kornelia

It’s a known issue unfortunately. We’re working on this. Meanwhile I can suggest workaround solution – in system Prefs change ‘Swipe left or right with two fingers’. That will fix the issue temporary.

      • Pavel

Kornelia, I would like to report you about one more issue:
It is hard to reproduce, but in happens pretty often: When you use opera, then clear history and everything then close browser and restart – ta-ta-m! It opens last closed tab.

        • RafaellaG

That’s probably because in settings you have set: On Startup -> “Continue where I left off”.

      • Alex

        ok, thanks for letting know!

  • Pavel

Btw, I have the same issue some people complained in this topci: I app’s header has nothing to do with system colors, just gray. I have windows version 10.0.10586 and have “Show colors on …. and title bar” enabled.

  • Vlad
  • Nibutsa

Please come back the group tabs feature

    • Don Joe

Exactly. Is tab grouping back? Are mouse gestures back? Are configurable text-prefix shortcuts for searching in the address bar back? Without these, the Opera I used to know is still a dead browser.

      • BK

Opera is alive more than ever 🙂

        • Don Joe

Hmm… I’ve had a look over the Features page for the desktop version and it seems you might be right. 🙂 (Well, except for the tab grouping, of course.) And I’m also seeing the speed dial folders feature that I just recently learned to love in the mobile version.

Looks like it’s time to seriously consider coming back to Opera for all my desktop browsing. 🙂

  • Jan Velecký

It would be nice to have option to pin/unpit tab by double-click on it.

  • oic

I have one issue, the page slider on the right sometimes is barely visible. Is it possible to make it darker or option to change it

  • Pēteris Gross

C’mon… give back old nice Opera looks, without win 10 navigation buttons. If i would like this thin, ugly arrows, i would use Edge 🙁 Disappointed, a lot….

    • RafaellaG

You can change “opera://flags/#windows-10-skin” to disabled and see what happens.
But I don’t know for how long this flag will be there anymore.

      • Herr Pietrus

And that’s the problem – we don’t know how long this flag will be available. That’s why we have to remind opera devs that there are some people who hate that ugly thin icons and even forced to use Win 10 they want to have at least normal browser UI 🙂

        • RafaellaG

Although at first I too did not like the navigation buttons (I use Developer 37 as standard browser), I am used to it now and it does not bother me any more.

          • escruting

How does it not bother you that tabs look this bad compared to normal theme? http://i.imgur.com/hU1i55q.png

          • RafaellaG

Because I always “work” with a maximized window. Therefore for me it’s enough that there are small vertical lines to separate the tabs.
And the active tab is light grey whereas the others are dark grey.

          • escruting

Another screenshot with old opera window active —> http://i.imgur.com/bZJIq91.png

yes, its black on old opera and grey on the new win10 skin. I have a modified color theme and it seems new opera skin pick up the grey (for inactive windows and buttons) and the black for windows borders and bars is dismissed. So now theres another thing to worry about that changes completely the visual aspect of my web browser?

          • Mikolaj Boc

Hi escruting, you can actually use your system color! Please enable the setting Show system colors on top bar.

          • Mikolaj Boc

Also, your black + and stuff will turn white with this enabled so that you won’t hurt your eyes. I know you’ve been following us on dev so you may know about this… What is your major problem with this solution, then? The tabs that aren’t outlined?

          • escruting

Yes, i enabled the system color in the Settings and now the bar is black, but, some things are clear:

            – On windowed mode, the top bar has more height than without the windows 10 skin. Maximized, the top bar has the same height with or without the win10 skin. Shouldn’t be happening. I always use windowed mode.
            – Yes, the tabs that are inactive arent outlined and are disguised with the background color, it was better with the light grey on older versions.
            – The “+” new tab button isn’t vertically aligned. The same for the tab favicons and tab names, everything is too far down and not verticaly aligned with the tab…
            – The fonts of the inactive tabs seem to be in bold or blurry. This is not happening without the win10 skin.
            – The Menu Opera logo and design was FAR better in the old version. Please go back to the other version, there was no need to change this only for the win10 skin.

  • Stanislav Stratil

Ehm… I found something… About animated favicons in the webpage title. Why they are not animated on the tabs? If I look at my “Tabs” in the bookmark manager, they are animted, but they are not animated on the tabs in the upper part of the browser.

You can check for example on this website: http://kanji.nihongo.cz
And look on “Tabs” in bookmark manager.

    • Vux777

      confirmed on beta, win10
but animation on tabs bar works only in firefox

canary and edge also have static favicon

  • escruting

Please please please make an option in the settings to disable the windows 10 theme and go back to the classic theme. I will stop using (or updating) Opera if the flag to disable the win10 dissapears. I know a lot of people are against it too.

    • escruting

And also the option we had to make some interface elements (tab menu, new tab button) brighter to see them in darker windows 10 themes. So, just make Opera usable for a lot of windows 10 users again. Please.

      • RafaellaG

For changing the darker theme back to the brighter theme you have to enable opera://flags/?search=overl#no-theme-overlay AND https://www.opera.com/blogs/desktop/2016/02/initial-opera-developer-37-release/#comment-2518986758 (of course for the Opera stable path).

So it is not easily functioning with a simple button in settings

        • escruting

          – I dont know exactly what you’re referring to because my theme file doesnt look like that. These black buttons is what i’m talking about —> http://i.imgur.com/AYWeVJx.png
          – Its not easy right now, Opera devs can make a button for anything they want, the “they want” is the problem, they dont want to give choice to the users so we have to adapt to their choices.

          • RafaellaG

You mean the black ‘+’ and Open tabs icon?
In my browser they are white (Win10 x64).
All I found in my research is that some color settings in Windows have white text and some have back. Why exactly your accent color causes a black text / ‘+’ I don’t know

          • escruting

They were black and then Opera themselves mentioned this and solved this on a build some months ago (can’t find it). But then when they introduced the complete “windows 10 skin” it seems that this was included in the skin and when you disable the skin you also don’t get the white buttons…What i’m asking the devs is bring back the white buttons option and make a permanent option to disable the windows 10 skin.

    • RafaellaG

You can change the (per default enabled) flag “opera://flags/#windows-10-skin” to disabled

      • escruting

Yes, i know the existence of that flag, but thats not what i’m asking, please read my post. We all know all flags dissapear sooner or later.

  • Exit

How about you developers bring back the old but wanted features first because those are the ones why people actually used Opera in the first place?

    • Marko Koivuniemi

I’m waiting nothing but tab stacks. I never used M2 or IRC because there are much better (for my usage) separate alternatives. What features you miss most?

      • Stanislav Stratil

For me, its better support for custom search engines (sorting, grouping, icons in context menu) and ability to choose if i want to open search results in current/background/foreground tab everywhere (from context menu and also from all search fields).
        Thats my most wanted feature.
        Still waiting, and still nothing…

        • jedy123

Have you requested these features? Unfortunately, every Opera user has an idea what features they want implemented (delete data on exit is mine). Opera can’t work on them all at once.

          • Stanislav Stratil

Of course I requested that a long time ago…

        • Marko Koivuniemi

Just for sake of curiosity. What kind of different search engines people need. Maybe I’m too lazy but I actually normally use just one. 😉 It’s very rare that this one engine doesn’t satisfy my needs.

          • Stanislav Stratil

Im using many search engines… like for reverse image search on Google, or when I need to look for info in many databases (movies, anime, music albums, wikipedia).

Or video sites like Youtube or for me personally jisho.org, when I need to look up japanese kanji…

Steam, shops, torrents… its much faster than visit page and then use their search field.

If you are lazy as you are saying, its really helpful to use it.

          • http://www.youtube.com/user/max1cp?feature=mhum Maxim

You know that Opera already supports this right? I just went to jusho.org right clicked the search bar and selected create search engine. And added it…

          • Stanislav Stratil

Yes, I know… but I want more than that. Read my previous post.

    • jedy123

I think Opera is an excellent browser and I’ve used it for over 10 years. What features exactly do you miss? If you want a (almost) clone of old Opera, try using Vivaldi.

    • Davey126

The Opera 12 UI/UX and feature set is looking long in the tooth by current standards. Yes – there were many neat capabilities for niche communities. There are other browsers if you want something closer to the old Opera. I agree the name should have changed when they went to Opera 15 but that decision is history. Opera 15+ is a different browser. Get use to it.

    • jedy123

I think Opera is currently an excellent browser and I’ve used it for over 10 years. What features exactly do you miss?

      • Exit

Tab stacking/grouping, speed dial with smaller search bar (not removed but smaller), clicking on title bar or in tab area opens new tab instead of resize, key icon for quick login, Opera Dragonfly (this is vital for me), old school download thing (possibility to open the file automagically after download and file listing shows on sidebar)… the list goes on. I’ve managed to pick some decent bookmark and site history addons but I still preferred the original.

  • GF-REX

Seems like when using the new “Windows 10” look, background tabs seem to blend into the rest of the browser a little too well. Maybe adding a thin border around the tabs will help a bit. Either that or just having a different shade than the rest of the toolbar.

I’ve disabled that flag for now, as its much easier to see my tabs with the old look.

Also minor complaint: I like having my web browser have a DIFFERENT color scheme than the rest of my Windows machine. I don’t think we are ever going to get real themes again, but an option to set the toolbar color manually would rock.

    • Mikolaj Boc

Okay, some color picker would definitely be handy. Thanks.

is there any way to disable smooth scrolling ?

    • Vux777

      enter in address field
      opera://flags/#disable-smooth-scrolling
      and disable it

but that flag won’t be there permanently, and when it’s gone (in future builds), no way to disable smooth scrolling

      • xirit64

I want to believe that Opera won’t let us down on this one.

        • RafaellaG

Why should one want NO smooth scrolling, if everyone has always demanded this feature for Opera? The logical consequence is thus to turn it on and stick to it. At least from Opera’s side.

          • escruting

Because it breaks the ability to scroll on some sites? because it makes scrolling blurry on some sites/fonts? Because theres nothing absolute for everyone and having a choice must be a priority?

          • RafaellaG

Could you give a couple of examples of those sites? I don’t remember have had scrolling issues because of smooth scrolling.

          • xirit64

Because it is snappier without smooth scrolling and there are many people that feel dizzy and nausea because of the blurriness of the smooth scrolling. And because of that in Opera Presto it was in the options. Not everybody always demanded this feature, don’t generalize.

          • Harry

The sync icon right from the adress bar is still visible here after a fresh installation. Even manually deactivating it via opera:flags doesn’t help. I don’t use the sync feature.

I like very much the new Windows 10 theme. For me it’s better with the option for system colors disabled.
The only problem is still the same: on my computer Opera is AWFULLY slow as Chrome. Firefox is still faster (Opera 12 is the fastest).

    • http://www.youtube.com/user/max1cp?feature=mhum Maxim

If your computer is from 2006 you shouldn’t expect a browser (or any software) from 2016 to run on it without issues.

      • x a

        Why not?

        • Marko Koivuniemi

Generally speaking a lot of older machines offer poor CPU (lesser cores and abilities) and/or GPU compared to todays machines. My main Windows machine is from 2010 and it still is very capable because it was expensive when I bought it. But many cheap machines younger than mine are troubles in demands of todays needs. Chrome and Opera can utilize CPU cores efficientlyt but for my experience example in single-core machine Firefox is much better. Have you plovec tried Opera with Chrome’s flag –single-process – I don’t know does it work anymore in Opera? http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/8-cool-tricks-to-put-some-more-sheen-on-google-chrome/

      • http://www.vece.net/ plovec

My computer is not from 2006. It’s from 2011 and fast enough to run Windows 10 and lot’s of other programs

      • Davey126

Opera runs fine on my optimized 2007 vintage LGA 775 desktop that beats out many i5 systems. Don’t assume age and performance are linked. Nor should you be assuming that because someone is having a performance problem that they are running ancient hardware.

        • xirit64

Same here, on my PC of 2008 it runs and renders much faster than Presto. 🙂

        • http://www.youtube.com/user/max1cp?feature=mhum Maxim

Just because that’s the case for you doesn’t mean it’s a general rule. In his case I just assumed it’s old hardware. It could be faulty hardware or some other software issues. Or a combination of the two. One thing is clear, however, the problem is on his end. I know this from a personal experience of using Opera on 4-5 different machines on semi regular basis. One of which is my old core 2 duo laptop. Also, a browser like opera is pretty heavily RAM bound.

          • Davey126

Agree with everything you say in the walk-back. But that is not what you said in the original post which I was commenting on.

I got 2 crashes today. I couldn’t understand the reason of them. Just normal browsing with news pages and forums. Opera closed itself and then restart it says “Opera saved you from a crash”.. I keep enabled the ‘Crash Reporter’ so I hope you got some reports for these. Please fix it, I love the stableness of the browser.

The new Windows 10 UI looks great. One request though: a dark mode mode, similar to the option available in Microsoft Edge browser.

Vivaldi also has dark mode 😉 *grabs popcorn*

“Unlike other browsers, we try to keep Opera’s UI as close to the platform as possible.”

This. Opera is the only major browser on the Mac, besides Safari, that places the tab close button on the left. It’s a small detail, but I appreciate it immensely.

    Congratulations on the release. 🙂

Dang! I must recognize you guys are doing a very good job! A few months ago I was just ranting at you because of the “slow development” you were demonstrating. But now I got to say you are really speeding up the development and the new-coming features are really good!

I love how Opera now adapts itself to the Windows 10 color style. Just wonderful! Keep up the good work, Opera Team!

Speed Dial flag on Start Page settings is also getting synced along with other settings. I have Opera on Office where I have Speed Dials and like to see them, but not on Opera at home where I like plain Start Page.

Can you keep Start Page settings for each system different within sync?

I cherish how Opera now adjusts to the Windows 10 shading style. Simply brilliant! Keep doing awesome!

With the new layout, bookmarks are having a problem. When I tried to open multiple (10) bookmarks in new tab, the confirmation tab comes, I say “Open Items” but nothing happens. And I can’t click on nothing on the start page. So I open a new tab.

When I try to open five bookmarks, no problem. I have this problem only when I tried to open 10+ bookmarks.

  • cristianer

Hi. I have a small problem. When I download 2 files from same server, the download speed is full in one and 0 kb/s in the other and switch every some seconds. This is not normal because in other browsers the speed is distributed equally.

  • 59er

Is the no theme overlay supposed to work now? All the default themes are too dark.
I’ve changed a few of ‘My Themes’ with the ‘Use Overlay=False’ trick, but it just too much of a hassle to change all the default themes. ‘Landscape photo’ looks like a fog rolling in instead of morning sun. Cheers!

    • RafaellaG

      Yes, it should work.
But as you said, most of the default themes are still to dark.

That’s because they don’t have the ‘Use Overlay = false’ in the persona.ini. Furthermore most of the downloadable themes are still version 1 themes and don’t support the Use Overlay feature and you have to change more than to include it.

Maybe someone readed … but I have a problem from time to time with the conducting of the text .

I have to turn off the opera and turn on . Again .. what is a nuisance ..

    Bug or something … ; / terribly annoying …

  • Alex

I also cannot get, is it a bug or some change: currently, if page is in my bookmarks (and heart near the address bar is red), I’m unable to remove it from here (make it again gray) by clicking on the heart. This is sometimes annoying, when I mistakenly click on it and add page to the bookmarks and then immediately want to undo adding. So I click on the heart again, but that doesn’t help.

  • Juan Maillo

Great update. One odd issue I’ve seen is that my bookmarks don’t seem to sort alphabetically. When I click to sort, it does some sorting but not alphabetical. I don’t think this issue was present for me on Opera 35.

  • Rafael

Please change the text Opera Opera symbol next to the menu back to the Opera text. I did not like this text menu and then remove the text and just let the Opera logo. Also give us a button to share like what Microsoft has Edge . thank you.

    • yigido

      Two friends talking..
+ Hey dude..whats you fav browser?
      – I started to like this new “Menu”, you can try it.
+..(typing “menu browser” on google, and found nothin’ .. anyway I still have Chrome)

I do not like that “Menu” text next the icon. It had to stay “Opera”
      I totally agree to you.

    • RafaellaG

For now you can disable the opera://flags/#alternative-main-menu-label.

But I also hope they change it back to “Opera” per default in the future.

      • Leonardo Gomes

The problem is that many people don’tdon’t know there is a menu there. That’s why they changed it.

        • RafaellaG

I know. But where would a main menu else be?

          • Leonardo Gomes

I guess many people still think about a menu bar or maybe the three lines icon and not exactly the browser icon when searching for a menu.

            But i see your point.

          • bwat47

Could be anything from a classic menubar, to being on the right side of the toolbar like chrome/firefox. Windows applications generally aren’t consistent with things like menu placement.

Personally, I don’t see why anyone would care with the button saying Opera vs Menu lol.

If anything the fact that the Opera logo is to the left of ‘Menu’, it’s implicitly saying ‘Opera Menu’ which makes sense to me.

  • vendeTTa – Bloody Red Monster

let me start with this – I am a huge fan of opera….
well this post shows the updates are here only for windows 10…
i am using windows 7 and it is unable to reflect any changes like these….
(only the speed dial page is good that is what i can see) there is no color changing of tabs (nice feature!! i love in vivaldi)…and there is no expandable form of extension in tool bar …
apart this i am facing some problems…
no icon for SYNC… (before it was always visible..now it is not)
i think you have changed your UI also…as shown in above pic… there is no change like that on windows 7.

    • Leonardo Gomes

no icon for SYNC… (before it was always visible..now it is not)

By design. The icon will only appear if there is something that requires an action from the user.

    • xirit64

Most people that stay on Windows 7 hate the Windows 10 flat, monochromatic design, so maybe it’s time for you to upgrade to Windows 10 to enjoy the full experience if you like it so much? Personally the Vivaldi look -which is a Windows 10 look- is very annoying to my eyes, it belongs to another OS philosophy and looks out of place for Windows 7.

      • vendeTTa – Bloody Red Monster

i tried windows 8.1 and my experience with that was not really good…so i switched back to windows 7….
        what another OS?

        • xirit64

          Windows 10 of course.

  • UMaster 7

vey nice, but is it possible to put in the buttons in the extension toolbar closer to each other? Or at least let us sort the buttons to make the most impossible buttons always visible, even when you’re in split screen mode (half screen window 😉 )

  • Mon

Thanks for changing the previous ugly Speed Dial design but it would be better if the titles had some shadow.

This version is great! The only thing I can’t find is how to change the dimensions of my speed dials. That used to be there under the advanced/secret settings, but it seems to have been fully gone for a while. Even if the solution requires editing files that’s okay with me.

  • Shalryn

I’ve never had a problem with crashes in Opera with Win10. What I do have an issue with (and yes, this is going to sound petty and stupid) are the new icons. They are bigger than the old icons, but they are designed in finer lines, actually making them less visible to people with bad eyes. Why can I not find an option to customize icons, so I can put them back to the way they were?

Apart from the annoying virtual keyboard bug, Opera is easily the best browser I’ve used on my Surface Pro 3, and its also great on my work Mac and my iPhone as it now syncs all the tabs nicely. No idea why it is so often overlooked.

I am wondering if Opera has the expire time for cache pages to expire before checking for newer versions of a page (seeing some pages fixed by shift reloading the tab to not load from cache) set to long

  • Don Joe

Too bad the Speed Dial style you went for is that “collapsing list” thing used by Chrome and Firefox, where all positions have to be filled at the top before you can put a new URL button at the bottom, and which immediately wrecks the ordering and positions you’re used to if you dare delete any of the buttons. If you think about it, that’s not how a real Speed Dial works – on a real Speed Dial (like that implemented in Maxthon) you can fill any array position you want based on how the URLs relate to eachother or just on how you want to remember them positionally, and each website button stays exactly where you put it no matter what other buttons you add or delete. The way you have it, any time I delete a Speed Dial button from the middle, all those coming after it are shifted around so they will no longer be in the positions I got used to – ugly ugly way to handle the layout of a Speed Dial.

    • Helder

Thats how Opera speed dial always worked, so its not “like Chrome and Firefox”.

      • Don Joe

It’s been a long time since I uninstalled 12.16 but I’m pretty sure you’re wrong, as I remember distinctly what an ugly surprise it was seeing the buttons shift around automatically the first time I used speed dial in Chrome. I think Ye Olde Opera had gotten me used to speed dial buttons that stayed where you put them.

        • Helder

Thats your memory tricking you, Opera always worked like that. Install Opera 12 and see for yourself.

And unlike Opera 36, Firefox allows you to customise your browser and add the buttons you would find useful.

Once Opera 12 started struggling with newer web sites I had to switch to Firefox. I hoped that one day Opera might be user friendly again.
    Maybe next year…

    • Vux777

FF is switching to chrome chromium philosophy (extensions logic, security…)
soon, it won’t be possible to customize FF in the way as it is now
      at least, majority of things

and it’s not because they are bad/lazy ppl, but because modern web development demands that

      • Simon Burgess

        That’s disappointing to hear.
Well, I’ll stick with FF till that happens then reassess.

Opera boasting how we can customise by changing themes is no help. Some of us need more than a different colour background.

      • NunYaBuziness

If Firefox is making their browser so it can uitilize add ons from chrome it wouldn’t take anything away from what their browser can already do as far as customizing. In fact, almost all of these chromium based browsers are more concerned with making sure their browsers are generating revenue as a focus and do not balance their efforts to design a User Interface that makes sense to power users. Hence the reason why Chromium browsers NEED so many extensions to be available in the first place. All firefox is doing is laying the foundation for the chromium browser users to migrate their extensions and data and switch browsers. Then we might see alot of chromium based broswer users changing sides which gives firefox a bigger share of the market. It’s genius. Then everyone can benefit from the much more powerful and secure functionality of Firefox

        • Simon Burgess

Shame. I could be happy if I could just move some of their very own buttons from the menu to a tool bar.

It’s not as if I want to change the way the browser works – just have a more efficient interface for browsing.

    • NunYaBuziness

When using this browser on windows 10 in tablet mode the virtual keyboard doesn’t suggest words. The virtual keyboard suggests words in all of windows and Edge, but not in opera. Is there a setting that I can change, or an extension I can set in the shorcut?
