Hello!

Welcome in Opera 37 development cycle. During last cycles we’ve been clear open what we are working on. Now we are preparing small surprise for you, or actually, two, if we manage to fix everything on time. You will not find it in changelog, not even in the flags. 😀 We can’t say yet what that is, but you are very welcome to help us testing recent updates on sync engine and other bugfixes. Amongst the others there is also a flag for #no-theme-overlay, thanks to which you will be able to remove overlay.

XP/Vista

It has been announced on Chrome Blog that Windows XP and Vista support is ending including security fixes. We do care for our loyal users, which you could recently observe with 12.18 security update. While Opera 36 will be last one with features additions on Windows XP and Vista, we are still going to provide security and crash fixes to XP and Vista platform. You will no not be able to run Opera 37+ on Windows XP and Vista, we advise you update to more recent OS, if possible. Otherwise, we will have Opera 36 for you :)

Thanks, Błażej, for the first Opera Developer 37.0.2142.0 release !
This version marks the breakaway and support for Windows XP and Vista.

  • L33t4opera

Hi Błażej, thanks for the article, and congrats to the Developers on the first release of ODev 37 😉

    • Tomasz Procków

      Fixed, thanks :)

  • RafaellaG

    Third 😉
Thank you for Opera Developer 37.

    • http://velmont.no/ Odin Hørthe Omdal (odinho/Velm

No. It just was like that from early days. Only bookmark manager had that design at the first. Other pages has just lifted parts of it, all of that needs a cleanup at one point.

      • RafaellaG

That “at one point” should be soon, or you eventually lose track of all and what you want to clean up 😉

  • Ralf Brinkmann

    Fourth!
    The rest will come soon…

  • http://fbgm.eu/ FB George

Suggestion: add an extra option to have the find search box (CTRL + f) in the address bar, same as the search box.

  • led9ru

“We can’t say yet what that is” – Chinese surprise? :)
    Are these your playfulness timely?

    • Mikolaj Boc

      Nothing malevolent, fear not.

    • Wraith

or “recent updates on sync engine” mean that the chinese server is syncing the data now lol XD.

  • Ralf Brinkmann

    Ok, can I start?

    – Re-regression in the download manager: It’s not possible to tab around on the download manager page and to delete all downloaded files by keyboard. In the last 36.x developer you changed this back to the old behaviour, but now it’s again the bad way. Is there any flag I can set to change that back?
    – Endless page scrolling with the space key (built in in the old 12.x) does not work properly with rel Link Pager (the only adequate replacement) with the old, normal Opera Skin (red O), only with the new “Gothic-Needle-Skin” called “Windows 10 Skin”. So there seems to be more than only another colour for the O and the needles.
    – Facebook videos run better now on my computer, but there is another small thing: When I hover with my mouse cursor over the left column, especially “Groups”, “Apps” and “Friends”, the icons and numer of new posts disappear.

  • Ghirahim

    Opera 37 64-bit.

    • Ralf Brinkmann

How did you find that out? Here it runs as 32-Bit application. W10x64

      • Ghirahim

        It’s just a wish. Unfortunately.

    • Olli

Haha, we’ve had Opera 64-bit on OS X for years. 😛

  • Nekomajin43

Hey guys! What about Extensions and Themes in the navbar?

Also, do the navbar icons and the + sing change color automaticaly depending on the theme?

And if you don’t want to remove the search box from the speed dial folders, please use less border radius to match other search boxes on the GUI.

  • led9ru

Flag “No theme overlay” = not work for me.
“Allows themes to have no dark overlay.” = my theme and other teme still dark, darker than the original wallpaper. For any value of the flag.

This flag is, depending on the other flags?

    • Vux777
    • RafaellaG

You have also to (add and) use the new “Use Overlay = false” in the persona.ini in the theme (.zip file) in C.usersyourusernameAppDataRoamingOpera SoftwareOpera DeveloperThemes.

      eg. like this:

      [Start Page]
      Background = Background.jpg
      Position = center bottom
      Use Overlay = false <————–
      Title Text Color = #FFFFFF
      Title Text Shadow = #000000

    • led9ru

Vux777, RafaellaG thank you! :) Darkness has disappeared!

  • Vux777

  • Matheus Bombonato

A lot of options to customize the UI, except an option to remove the big + button on the SD. We are asking this for so long. Why this is such a hard option to include? There are several more complex options already implemented. Please? :)

    • BK

Assuming we add this, what will be the next on the agenda? 😀

      • Matheus Bombonato

You guys are working to improve the SD. This is one of them that could appear on the next releases :)
For my daily use at home and work, the current SD is great. I just want to remove this button because it´s useless and it is creating a scrollbar on my perfect 7×4 SD 😛
So… there´s nothing else on my agenda for the SD.
It´s just hard to understand why this is not optional like everything else. There´s a lot of customization except this simples one.

      • Kai Ockendorf

The next? To scroll through tabs via mouse gestures (right mouse click + scroll wheel) :p

        • BK

we don’t have that yet, strange.. :) let me add it on our todo list 😀

          • xirit64

And while you are at it, think about making rocker gestures switch tabs (left-right) instead of what it does now 😉

          • mies

No. Current way is more common.

          • xirit64

Browsing with back-forward is a thing of the long forgotten past when there were no tabs, so it is anachronistic. Secondly there are 2 ways of doing that with the mouse already, a) by clicking arrows b) by using mouse gestures (the best), but there are 0 ways for switching tabs with the mouse and this one is the best as it doesn’t preview the tabs (faster & more efficient) :)

          • mies

Browsing back-forward is still needed. These hardcoded rocker gesures use pattern most people are accustomed to. Ask developers to make gestures configurable, but not just hardcode another gesture instead of current one.
For me switching tabs is also done by mouse (back and forward buttons are configured to emulate CTRL+PGUP and CTRL+PGDN ).

          • Nekomajin43

That one would be really nice…

          • Kai Ockendorf

If you really add it on your todo list…man, I couldn’t thank you enough for that 😀

        • mies

And then it should be configurable. I personally disliked this right click scroll menu in Opera 12.

          • taneli

How can you dislike it, it’s optional, you don’t have to use it :p But for some it’s a great feature to have (Vivaldi already implemented it some time ago (configurable)).

I personally have been asking for this feature from the day the first O15 landed.

          • mies

It is not optional because it does not exist in new Opera 😉
I just warned that it should be configurable if would be implemented or not implemented at all.

      • Footman

Automatic tab stacking by page is the only thing I am missing in Opera. I often have multiply tabs opened from the same page, so this would be really helpful.
One more thing is to extend bookmarks manager with “Notes”. So it would be something like Evernote in Opera.

      • Nekomajin43

How about moving the + button to the right, under the cogwheel? It would be straightforward with a tooltip.

        • Kai Ockendorf

          Very nice idea :)

    • BK

      There you go DNA-49734

  • Cryio

If Opera 37 lacks any support for XP/Vista, is the code any lighter or anything? Or is the browser built with .NET 4.5 or something like that?

    • BK

Yes, code will be removed, some libraries loading will be removed, effectively, software should be lighter and faster.

  • Marc

So how do we add a new custom theme? I don’t see an option for that anymore.

    • xirit64

You go to Menu -> Themes.

      • Marc

I was always right-clicking on the speed dial to “Change theme” but that doesn’t let you add a custom theme anymore. Didn’t think of the main menu, lol. Thanks.

    • RafaellaG

Right-click and “Change Theme” on SD-Page has only basic functionality

    • BK

We are looking into making this straightforward, in place, and removing current theme manager.

      • Nekomajin43

Is it possible that it will be combined with toolbar customisation? Something similar to Firefox?

        • BK

Did someone said here FF?;) Anything but that please!

          • Nekomajin43

OK, so that furry little mammal with a reddish color, which is actually not a fox but a bear.

  • Zin

“We do care for our loyal users, which you could recently observe with 12.18 security update.”

    Wonderful and beautiful @_@

Now if you only added support for extensions that Opera 37 has plus irc…. 😉

    • BK

      irc? what is that? :p

      • ayespy

        Internet Relay Chat

  • Nekomajin43

How about dropping this overlay solution and adding a slider to the settings to adjust overlay opacity? In this was, everyone would be able to select the desired level from zero to full dark.

    • RafaellaG

      +++

So we do not have to change every new downloaded themes persona.ini where the “Use Overlay” is missing or is true.

    • BK

      aka, more options please? 😀

      • RafaellaG

Not more – just a different approach

      • Vux777

it’s not exactly performance issue (additional setting)
if Opera must read whether theme have overlay or not, it may as well read overlay opacity instead
it’s a single event one way or another

      • Nekomajin43

        Yep. 😀

But for real, what if I have a favourite theme, but the author won’t update it to remove the overlay? I think it is a serious problem.

        • BK

I believe you will find a way to get around this easily :)

          • Nekomajin43

I don’t like to edit other poeple’s stuff if it is not necessary.

Anyway, an overlay can be good if the image is too colorful/bright. But it also depends in the display. I may not want to use the same level of opacity on a full HD LED display and a cheaper TN panel.

      • Gloriam

        That’s a real Opera 12+ way of thinking, I approve! 😀

        • BK

Thanks. Now finally we can implement more options 😀

          • RafaellaG

That is what you said – not we!

  • Wando Schneider

I know that there’s no need to say that, but i’ll say: This browser is getting better and better every day. Congrats to everyone who help in any way to shape this product, specially the Designers, Devs and QA teams.

    • RafaellaG

Sometimes you have to say it.
Even Designers, Devs and QA teams need some praising to go on^^

Similar problem with 9gag.com (while opening any img), however entire page is black.

edit: clicking on above link also gives me black page, problem doesn’t exist when I type address in address bar – anyone can confirm?

    • RafaellaG

No problems here. On both sites. Also Win10x64.

This bug exists also in dev 37.

  • Licaon_Kter

`DNA-49186 [Linux] Make opera look for libffmpeg.so in {origin}/lib_extra directory`

    Where is {origin} exactly?

    It’s not:
    /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/opera-developer/lib_extra
    /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/opera-developer/resources/lib_extra

    Reading opera/resources/ffmpeg_preload_config.json:
    [
    “lib_extra/libffmpeg.so”,
    “/usr/lib/chromium-browser/libs/libffmpeg.so”
    ]

    • Łukasz Jagielski

Hey, origin is the directory where opera executable resides. Previously opera executable had RPATH set to {origin}/lib_extra and we issued this ticket to provide backwards compatibility for that.

      • Łukasz Jagielski

You can create this /usr/lib/x86_64/opera-developer/lib_extra and put custom build of libffmpeg.so there. If it’s compatible (based on correct chromium version) opera will pick it up and use.

        • Licaon_Kter

Neither one of these seems to work with 48.0.2564.82-0ubuntu1.1222:
          `lib_extra/libffmpeg.so`
          `/usr/lib/chromium-browser/libs/libffmpeg.so`

          • Łukasz Jagielski

Opera developer 37 is based on chromium 50, so you need to use newer chromium ffmpeg, for example from chromium dev ppa https://launchpad.net/~saiarcot895/+archive/ubuntu/chromium-dev

          • Licaon_Kter

Although, as I said, it works by directly replacing it?
Ok, I’ll retry with that one too.

          • Licaon_Kter

Ok, got `chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra_50.0.2638.0-0ubuntu1-ppa1-15.10.1_amd64` and now it works as expected, maybe on the next blog post one of you could mention this change and the >=50 requirement. 10q

        • Licaon_Kter

Also, I did not bother to mention thinking you’d know, but replacing Opera’s `libffmpeg.so` directly (as I did for a while now) works as expected.

      • Licaon_Kter

        It’s broken then.

        ‘opera-developer’ resides in ‘/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/opera-developer/’

        ‘ffmpeg.so’ resides in ‘/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/opera-developer/lib_extra’

Test page fails for H.264: http://www.quirksmode.org/html5/tests/video.html

What relation has with the included .so?

        .so is extracted from http://packages.ubuntu.com/xenial/chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra

        • Łukasz Jagielski

is it ffmpeg.so or libffmpeg.so (it must be the latter)? Can you tell me what you see in output when you launch opera with such a commandline? opera-developer –enable-logging –vmodule=ffmpeg_preload*=1

          • Licaon_Kter

It’s `libffmpeg.so` from the .DEB, I’ve written here wrong.

`opera-developer –enable-logging –vmodule=ffmpeg_preload*=1` yields a lot of things, what do you want exactly?

          • Łukasz Jagielski

            Lines with ffmpeg_preload substring.

          • Licaon_Kter

No text mentioning `ffmpeg` was logged.

  • taneli

I’ve had a problem on youtube for O36 and it persisted through to O37:
When refreshing youtube’s subscriptions page (happens on some other pages too), the page refreshes, then after maybe 10 seconds the page starts to refresh again by itself and reloads for ~5sec, during this reload the page is completely unresponsive, console said that this popped up on the second reload:
Resource interpreted as Document but transferred with MIME type text/javascript: “https://s.ytimg.com/yts/jsbin/player-en_US-vfl329t6E/base.js”.

    (No extensions, vanilla flags) Win8.1×64.

  • sgrandin

I’m missing the “care for for our loyal users” when Opera 12.18 was not announced on this blog, but only in passing well into an entry about Opera developer 37? The irony is that if you actually cared for your loyal users, I would have gladly left Opera 12 behind for the newer version long ago.

  • Alex Lozano

    Nice surprises!
Some tweak, could be possible to edit the navbar to put it centered?
Like sharing bar here on the blogs!?

  • Kai Ockendorf

About the surprises: Is it under “customize the start page” to have more options like downloads?

    • BK

I would expect something more sophisticated.. :)

      • qwerzaq

        Is Opera x64 for Windows

        • BK

We are looking into this, not promises yet, but this is not the surprise.

          • RafaellaG

Soon you have our expectations so screwed up, that no one holds your “surprise” for something special any more, when it really comes;)

Or is it already there and we didn’t noted it?

    • xirit64

I’d bet on tab stacks :)

      • BK

No. At least.. not yet 😀

        • xirit64

ha ha. OK, the return of the Bookmark Sharing feature. Or… hmm the rearrangement of extension icons 😛 . no wait I got it… dat RSS Reader feature. 😀

          • BK

            :)

          • xirit64

Actually to be clear, those are just guesses and not wishes :) Except for the first two (extensions icons, bookmark sharing less, although it was pretty unique), I don’t need the RSS and tab stacks, as I’m using the Smart RSS extension -in those rare cases-, and I was never actually using tab stacks either back in the Presto days, I used them only because I could group or sort tabs together in order to close them, a thing that I’m doing now using extensions.
But regarding tab stacks if you have a better implementation than Vivaldi in mind I wouldn’t mind testing it, so to say :)

    • beBoss

Well we can RE the opera exe and can find it, (if is it in the code of course) 😀 but wait do have to? That’s why it’s “surprise/s” 😉

    • Leonardo Gomes

I guess the surprise is yet to come.

  • Dave-H

Oh dear, I was just seriously thinking about where I eventually go from Opera 12.17 on my XP system, and you release 12.18 and stop versions above 36 running on XP! That’s made my decision a lot easier thanks, I’ll stick with 12.18 for a while longer, and then probably go with Vivaldi.
(Now I’ve said that, they’ll drop XP support now of course!)

    • BK

What keeps you away from using O35?

      • Dave-H

Nothing, but I don’t like being cut off from further developments!
If Opera 36 is the last version I’ll ever be able to use on Windows XP, it’s no better than being stuck permanently with Opera 12.18.

        • taneli

You kinda already did cut yourself off from further developments (in many areas, not just browsers) by sticking with a 15 year old OS.

          • Dave-H

Yes I have, and I have always accepted that software developers will drop support for operating systems that are no longer supported by their originators. I just didn’t think that Opera, who had a long tradition of supporting systems for enormous lengths of time with Presto Opera, would drop support for XP and Vista quite so soon!
Windows Vista, I might add, is still supported by Microsoft for another year, so why’s that now being abandoned?!

          • taneli

I would hazard a guess, that they’re gonna be adding something to the browser, that doesn’t work on the older OS’es. (also, removing support happened ’cause of Chromium, so Opera will have to follow suite ’cause they use it).
Or if not adding something, just not wanting to waste resources on maintaining it on the old OS’es.

Edit: Also, out of curiosity, why would you not use at least Windows 7, it’s brilliant o.O Might take something to get used to coming from XP but it is a very nice and working OS.
Win8 was shit, and MS already dropped a lot of support on that one, but 8.1 can be great, if hacked a bit and using some 3rd party stuff.

          • Dave-H

Yes, I guess Chromium is the root of the problem, which will affect Vivaldi and other Chromium based browsers too of course. I have tried 37 on XP, and it apparently installs fine (something that the installer should really prevent) but just won’t run. “Entry Point Not Found: The procedure entry point QueryWorkingSetEx could not be located in the dynamic link library PSAPI.DLL”.

Actually I’m not quite as much of a Luddite as I sound! I have a multi-boot machine, with Windows 8.1 on it as well as Windows XP, and I have nothing against 8.1 and I do use it for some purposes, I just prefer using XP for most of what I do.
And yes, Windows 8.1 does need something like Classic Start Menu to make it usable! :-)

    • beBoss

XP sucks, and the support of Opera and Microsoft is dropped! It;s normaln nobody will wait fro you to use a normal OS or to buy a PC that can run a normal OS like Windows 7 for example! XP is outdated…. It;s like to wait from Opera to support Windows 95, it’s stupid right? And you can use this version of Opera, if not just stop spamming here!

      • Dave-H

Sorry I rattled your cage! And XP does not suck, it’s arguably the best OS Microsoft ever produced. Its life had to end at some point of course, but it’s far from being abandoned yet by huge numbers of people.

        • beBoss

Facepalm! Xp and the best hayahayyah, no comment!

          • Dave-H

Your opinion, to which you are of course entitled, it’s happens not to be mine.
That is my last word on this, as this is not the place for Operating System wars!

        • xirit64

XP was good, if you would ask my personal opinion though I’d say that Windows 2000 was much better than XP :) Rocksolid, my favorite.

    • xirit64

Well if Vivaldi does the same at some point and you don’t want to pay MS to upgrade you could always use a light Linux distro and keep using the latest Opera :)

  • netwolf

Thanks a lot for 12.18, best update since a very long time!

Anyone else getting “unknown plugin has crashed” or similar message? Forgot to screenshot it. Only plugins I have is java, widewine, pdf viewer and flash. w10 b14257 x64

    • Leonardo Gomes

Yep, have seen it a few times here since yesterday.

      • Kornelia

Thanks Guys, reported in our bug tracking system. We’ll take a look at this issue.

    • wrm

      Here’s your screenshot: http://i.imgur.com/UzTUptn.jpg

Same problem here, my entire browser freeze for few seconds, I click “Yes” to kill the plugin and everything go back to normal. I can see this happen a lot when scrolling on Twitter. I tried to deactivate all my plugins and extensions, nothing change.

It reminds me the bug that we have since few weeks on stable/beta and developer versions, the browser freeze completely, we have no other choice than close the browser, mostly happen on Twitter. At least, now we can kill the “unknown” plugin. o/

  • RafaellaG

Why do you have removed the “Simple settings page” flag? Now I have always the basic settings shown (and first selected) :(

    • Leonardo Gomes

Because the experiment has ended and the feature considered ready?

    • BK

What do you need to access in settings first of all?

      • RafaellaG

If you really overhaul your whole menu system like some suspected and the options appear only on ONE place in the menu structure, then it’s ok.

But right now everything is everywhere and not at every place you can access all functions. So I like to use preferably the places where I get all of the options functionality. And the basic functions bothers me.^^

On startup/Downloads – I can find also in browser
Cookies – in privacy & security (where it belongs)
Themes – under Themes (with its full functionality) in the main menu AND under customize start page.

It’s too redundant and not all function are available everywhere.

I prefer to disable redundant and shortened settings (but not the access from the side panel on start page – though I disabled history and tabs in side panel ^^).

        • xirit64

No offense, but you guys need to get to your senses and make some more useful suggestions in the first place lol. Like the other guy that finds the rounding of 1px on the tabs awful (in another thread I was wondering if it was bad like “Firefoxy-bad”, that was the impression the OP gave me), and how the 1 extra line called “Basic” annoys you :)

          • Nekomajin43

It was very useful. The main menu is a mess and the design and accessability is outdated.

          • xirit64

The simple settings disable flag was very useful because it disabled the “Basic” line in the settings page? ok…

          • Nekomajin43

            Read it again.

          • xirit64

I’ve read it she is talking twice about the “Simple settings page” flag. Maybe you are off topic?

          • RafaellaG

It was the last straw that broke the camel’s back (german: es war der Tropfen, der das Fass zum Überlaufen gebracht hat) – at least for me.

The whole menu design is already chaotic enough. And then they added the basic settings again or at least it could no longer be disabled.

I just want a simple menu design , where you have all the options at the appropriate place – and not also parts of everything everywhere.

Apologies if I have expressed myself somewhat unfortunate.
But after I saw the basic settings again and that I could not turn them off… argh^^

  • escruting

There should be a “Tabs” entry on the Opera Menu. If we disable the Tabs from the navbar we shouldn’t have to go to the navbar settings everytime just to use it sporadically.

EDIT: I see the Win10 Skin flag returned, why so silent, Opera?

    • Vux777

maybe they gonna redesign the whole “O menu” (referring to “surprise” from article)
right now it’s too big and that archaic look doesn’t follow the rest of the UI
I would like to see some combo of FF menu and Win10 start menu (maybe even customized)
there’s plenty of room (especially width), why everything needs to be stacked

      • BK

wrrrr 😀 just not FF please !

        • Vux777

FF menu looks super cool :)

          • http://www.youtube.com/user/max1cp?feature=mhum Maxim

            Not really.

          • BK

            well, let’s agree to dissagree

          • http://www.youtube.com/user/max1cp?feature=mhum Maxim

BTW, why did you guys make tabs round on new win 10 theme? They used to be square just like everything in win10 and now they have round corners and look completely out of place.

          • Vux777

now they are round and look completely out of place.

            Not really. 😛

          • http://www.youtube.com/user/max1cp?feature=mhum Maxim

            =)
Well it’s obviously a matter of opinion. But without a question they do not fit in with the windows 10 theme and win 10 in general. I mean everything in win 10 is squares and has sharp corners.

          • Vux777

we talking about this little corner radius, right?
            http://prntscr.com/a4msge

it’s minor that is barely visible (200% zoom on image)
I like it actually ( no kidding)

          • BK

This is amazing. And I thought I have an aye for a details 😀
Should we have an option for that? 😉

          • beBoss

            It’s fine, don;t touch it! 😉

          • BK

            Is it a request, or a threat ? 😀

          • http://www.youtube.com/user/max1cp?feature=mhum Maxim

Wait, you didn’t know? That’s funny. It’s very clearly visible on my dark win 10 theme.

          • http://www.youtube.com/user/max1cp?feature=mhum Maxim

Really? I mean it doesn’t bother me much or anything. I could easily get used to it but it definitely doesn’t follow win 10 theme logic. Literally everything in win 10 has sharp corners. I would think since this is a win 10 “theme” update it would be consistent with win 10 design language. It was nothing more than a question on my part though. I don’t care much about it.

          • Ralf Brinkmann

            “ads.prntscr.com is blocked”

          • Vux777

how did you get to that address?
that’s not address from my comment
            http://prntscr.com/a4msge

          • Ralf Brinkmann

If I open your link, it is directed to http://prnt.sc/a4msge and there seems to be an unwanted tracker, that is blocked (in all my browsers). I see this blocking text inside the boxes for images or something.

          • BK

Wow, you are talking about this 1px ? :)

          • Ralf Brinkmann

Why are your’s round and mine are not?

          • Devocalypse

I completely agree. Border radius – even 1px – has no place in the Win10 theme. For those who don’t see it – get a better display device.

          • Vux777

in chrome and opera i always have to focus to find what I need to click…FF makes it easy

hello, PDF files could not be displayed in the Science journal by saying “couldn’t load plug-in”.

    • Leonardo Gomes

      Link to it?
Chrome PDF Viewer or another plugin?

  • Vlad Violenty

may be you add Button “Hide + from Speed dial” at settings speed dial menu?

  • Marc

Don’t know if this is known but I think I found a bug: When filling out a form or editing something in an editor and you want to navigate away from that page, the browser asks you if you want to “Leave this Page” or “Stay on this Page” (as expected). But when I use the shortcut to access the speed dial (Ctrl + Spacebar) the prompt pops up but skips it immediately.

    • Mikolaj Boc

      It IS a bug, thanks.

  • Amazingeneer

Finally! Smooth scrolling is back. Been waiting for this feature since it showed up in the chromium blog for the first time. New design on win10 is also amazing. Keep that up!

    • Mikolaj Boc

      : Humble crew salutes :

      • x a

“Smooth scrolling”, though, doesn’t feel so much smooth as it feels sluggish. Maybe some inertia might be an ingredient making the feature more agile. (Anyways, such implementations are probably more in the Chromium programmers’ scope.)

        • Amazingeneer

Yes, it’s a Chromium feature but I’m still glad to see it in Opera too. Btw it runs fine here without lags. You might try to disable hardware acceleration since this is a common reason for sluggish performance

          • Vux777

I agree about the performance, but…
disabling HWA has impact on videos
            they often show black screen
problems with gifs too (FB, Twitter etc)

          • x a

I don’t experience ”lags“ here, even with hwa enabled (Win10/64bit). But I have to scroll for miles. The feature doesn’t come across naturally, if you know ehat I mean.

          • Amazingeneer

The only thing you could mean I imagine is: It runs slow and without interruptions like it does when you click with the mouse wheel and navigate down or up to scroll. But sometimes it kinda jumps from line to line when scrolling. This is the strange setting Chromium uses when you scroll down. There are add ons for Chromium (also compatible with Opera) where you manually can set preferences how fast and how much it scrolls down a page when you turn your mouse wheel until it locks for the next time. It’s a little bit tricky to explain but I hope you know what I mean.

  • tarkus

There are, still, some problems with synchronization. I must have been out of sync for sometime and today, when I synced again, I noticed two pairs of double speed-dial folders. In the first case, the two folder names were different (one having the previous – older – name, and the other the – renamed – right one) and in the second case, two same folder names but with different contents (the older folder with less links). I deleted the older ones and I’m waiting synced to see what will happen! I’m giving a day or two to see if things are back to normal
PS I’m not so interested in the case of the two different folder names, maybe they were considered as two different things. But what about the two folders with the same name: shouldn’t the most recent one have replaced the other?

    • BK

      Thanks for report :)

    • Kornelia

Hi, could you send us more details, for example if you’re using Opera Stable/ mobile together with developer build which causes this problem?

      • tarkus

I have Opera stable installed on my desktop & laptop & I use Opera mini & Opera mobile on my phone & tablet respectively, but I DO NOT use syncing (I do not login to Opera and I have syncing DISABLED) on any of these devices except the desktop because I’m afraid of the mess it could cause. So, it’s only Opera developer!

        • Kornelia

Thanks for details. We’ve got it reported in our system now, DNA-49754.

          • tarkus

            These are my synchronization Rules:
            Opera team ->
            1. Distinguish Dates in Database: Distinguish between bookmarks/speed-dials creation/modification date (date of last usage not necessary for this particular purpose)
            2. Folders treatment:
2.1 New folder name – add folder (with all included bookmarks) without checking (possible same folders with different names but because of user’s fault)
2.2 Same folder name but later creation/modification date – replace folder (with all included bookmarks) without checking (possible loss of included bookmarks but because of user’s fault)
            3. Individual bookmarks (out of folders, ‘root’ located) treatment:
3.1 New bookmark – add without checking
3.2 Same bookmark but later creation/modification date – replace without checking
            User ->
            4. First time sync application:
4.1 Sync off, on all devices
4.2 Delete all bookmarks & Speed-dials from all devices, except for the ‘right ones’ that they are going to be used from this day on
4.3 Backup locally all the ‘right ones’ bookmarks & Speed-dials
4.4 Sync on, on all devices
            5. Subsequent syncing: After obeying all the afore-mentioned rules to the letter, be absolutely sure you understand them fully and then make whatever change you want in bookmarks/speed-dials, keeping in mind that the afore-mentioned 1 to 3 rules, are in effect
            6. Keep regular local backups
            7. In case of a user mistake and before restoring from a local backup, syncing must be off on all devices and the whole procedure (afore-mentioned point 4) must be repeated from the beginning

Is the “Video compression” feature available in opera browser???

  • MountainGoat

There is still a problem with playing flash: I upgraded from 36.0.2114.0 to 37.0.2142.0 and sites like pandora or pages with video reported that there was no flash player.
My operating system is debian linux 32 bit PAE, tracking the testing distribution:
    3.16.0-4-686-pae #1 SMP Debian 3.16.7-ckt4-3 (2015-02-03) i686 GNU/Linux

I had to fix this *** manually*** by running: update-pepperflashplugin-nonfree –install
This worked but gave the message:
    Saving to: ‘/tmp/pepperflashplugin-nonfree.ClxHHowOAC/google-chrome-stable_48.0.2564.109-1_i386.deb’

My installed version of google-chrome-stable is 48.0.2564.103 (not .109 as above).

Is there a need to have a specific version of google-chrome installed for flash to work in opera-developer? If not, can this issue be detected in the post-install script and done automatically after the new opera-developer is installed?

It’s hard to handle this manually and the above fix did not work for opera-developer 36.0.2129.0, so I had to downgrade.

One more issue related to this: in March google will end chrome support for 32 bit linux. Does that mean that after that opera-developer on 32 bit linux will no longer be able to handle video?

  • 59er

I would suggest leaving the new overlay feature out of Opera 36 Stable, unless it can be made to work with type 1 themes. Since this will be the final release for XP it seems to make the most sense. XP users are a stubborn lot, with older systems, probably older monitors. It will be a one, two punch…first their final Opera, then most of their beloved themes going to the dark side. Cheers!

Yes, right, would be good to backport it actually.

    • Vlad

What do you think, developers? Please answer!

      • Ralf Brinkmann

I find this a good idea. In Facebook, when I hoover over an image, a new small window is popped up and shows the image in original size. In Amazon for example there are sometimes product pictures which habe a zoom effect when I hoover over them. I like that.

        • Vlad

Thanks, Ralf, that supported my suggestion.

    • BK

You can quite easily control zoom with ctrl+mouse wheel, right?
I’m not sure if your suggestion would be preferred solution to most of the users.
      What others think?

      • Marc

I think he means that when you zoom-in (using ctrl + mouse wheel) the image stays at top left position as it gets bigger and he wants it to zoom-in where the mouse is positioned instead. Actually not a bad suggestion if I understood correctly.

        • Vlad

          Yes, that’s what I meant!

      • Nekomajin43

There are two problems from my point of view:
If you zoom the was you’ve written, the whole page is being zoomed, and if you forget to reset it, next time you may have surprises. This is because of the zoom value is stored for the whole domain instead of the actual URL (as it was in O12). Very annoying.
The second is, if you zoom with mouse wheel, you can only use the default steps, so for example you can’t zoom by 1%.

There is a very good Fire… I mean that other browser extension for this problem: https://addons.mozilla.org/hu/firefox/addon/image-resizer/

I know it can cause a lot of trouble by breaking the flow of the website, but with certain restrictions it would be safe and very useful. You could do something similar to the textarea resize function with a dedicated corner. But if the standalone image is opened on a new tab, the user should be able to resize it with one move of the mouse.

      • Vlad

I’m not suggesting to replace the function of Ctrl+mouse wheel. I suggest to zoom under the mouse cursor.

    • http://velmont.no/ Odin Hørthe Omdal (odinho/Velm

      Interesting suggestion :)

      • Vlad

        Thanks dude! =)
It will definitely be a killer feature! This works in all image viewers.
And yeah, you guys doing a great work!!! Opera is much better than Chrome & other web browsers.

  • badbadger

Please! Change your keyword to search Wikipedia for longer (eg. “wiki” or “wi”).
Now in Polish: (people who write in other languages probably do not care)
Dostaję cholery jak wpisując w pasku “w którym roku” albo “w którym mieście” uruchamia mi się Wikipedia. No normalnie mam dosyć!

    • BK

Do no talk in natural language to goole, try “bitwa pod grunwaldem rok” instead of “w ktorym roku byla bitwa pod grunwaldem”.

      • badbadger

I would prefer a change keyword – as in any other browser.
I can write whatever I want in the address bar. I do not want keywords. Why do not you turn it off? !!!

      • Nekomajin43

Aaand we are back to the predefined search engines problem. Why don’t you just let us change them?

  • KONIK

Why there is no x64 for Windows ? :(

  • tarkus

It would be nice if every-time Opera must be re-launched (i.e. to apply updates or setup changes) to automatically restore the session before the re-launching!

    • Nekomajin43

A proper session manager would be even nicer…

      • tarkus

I couldn’t agree more but … there are worthy extension alternatives (session buddy)!

  • Xakep

When Opera will be able to change the color of the interface?
Because this stuff, more people go to Vivaldi …

    • xirit64

You know many of those people or you talking about yourself? :)

      • Xakep

Already quite a lot. And yet I’m sitting on the Opera.

        • xirit64

You know it’s an oxymoron telling how people go to Vivaldi because of it, but you who “represents them” is sitting on Opera, right? 😀
I think it’s just you who can’t stand Vivaldi’s look and UI in general but you are using it as a cheap argument so that we get this kind of crap.
Vivaldi forced the Windows 10 look from the beginning (and that was in fact what has driven many -including me- away from it, not the opposite) and Opera already has one for Windows 10 users, so I’m pretty sure that people using Windows 7 don’t like that stuff you say, otherwise they would have easily switched to Windows 10 and use Opera with the updated “10” interface instead, the one that Vivaldi is also using.

          • Xakep

Last time I used Windows version 3.
So do not you understand about Windows 10 you speak …)))
            Now used Linux…

        • Marko Koivuniemi

Me too. I’m tempted to test Vivaldi because I trust visions of their CEO because he was co-founder of The Browser I still trust.

    • Ralf Brinkmann

Try to login here on Disqus with Vivaldi. Good luck!

      • Vux777

        disqus login requires referrer
so if you disabled referrer in any growser (eg –no-referrers shortcut switch)
        you’ll get error

        • Ralf Brinkmann

No, nothing like that. Not in the command line of the link, not in the settings. Vivaldi does not even open the login page or window. So I’m going to stay with Opera. Except they don’t do what I want. :-)

          • xirit64

Installed out of curiosity and confirmed. Uninstalled. (W7x64).

          • ayespy

Sounds like you must have 3rd party cookies disabled in Vivaldi. It logs in to all Disqus boards without difficulty for me, in the normal way, including here. Don’t know *for sure* it that’s true of Beta2, which was 13 builds ago, but it’s true of all of the recent snapshots.

          • Ralf Brinkmann

That’s another advantage of Opera: In Opera I can say explicitely which cookies I want to have on my system and which not.

          • ayespy

It’a true Vivaldi is still quite immature and lacks sophisticated cookie handling, a fully-developed bookmark panel, and other things. But it is growing up. In the meantime it allows me to configure it to my work flow, which Opera does not. I can have tabs, panels, toolbars on any side of the browser or turn them off, I can stack tabs, tile them, etc., display favicons-only on my bookmarks bar, take notes with screenshots, install interactive web panels, zoom the UI (for my laptops), etc., etc.

So you and I each have things and lack things, and what I have happens to be what I need, and I have more with each build – which is why after 18 years, Opera is no longer my default browser. I’m using the one that once again offers the things that made Opera my default nearly two decades ago, and would have KEPT it my default if it still offered them – because I still need them for my work.

So you’re happy where you are (except you can’t converse with Opera’s CEO about what you want and have him LISTEN to you) and I’m happy where I am, which doesn’t make either of us stupid, or silly, or a bad person – yeah?

          • Ralf Brinkmann

Yes! And I think: There is still a lot to do, so let’s get ahead.

      • beBoss
      • ayespy

        No luck required. Works perfectly.

    • Leonardo Gomes

I don’t really think that this is a feature that would make lots of people change to another browser.

      • Wraith

Perhaps he means that the developers of these other browsers tend to listen more to its users than those here , if you notice over here the developers say always hear , but usually do what they please with new characteristics.

        • Leonardo Gomes

Well, listen to the users is one thing and do everything the users want is another completly different thing.

There will always be the need for a balance, so you don’t just praise one side and also don’t turn your product in something too complex to be maintained.

    • ayespy

I don’t know how many people that really draws. I know it has nothing to do with why I use it. I turned the tab and background colors off.

  • Dmitry Kirin

    Hi Team,
I’m sorry if this has already been reported. I even posted it here once, but deleted my post shortly after, when I thought I had found the cause and it would be outside Opera.

In this weird test scenario, I’ve got a post on a Facebook page, which links to a page in Radio Times, a British TV and radio magazine. (An example)
When I open the link, the Radio Times page starts spinning indefinitely, shows the contents, but then hangs. Scrolling works, but the right mouse button does not. At the same time, the Facebook page will be hanging completely. Even the mouse pointer won’t change over areas where it should, like textboxes. Only Ctrl+Space will, somewhat reluctantly, unload the failed pages.

Turning AdBlock off helped. However, I tried the same in the current Vivaldi (Chrome/48.0.2564.88 Vivaldi/1.0.390.3), and there it worked even with AdBlock.
So I think there could really be some issue with Opera dev.

    • Kartofel

Yea i have a similar issue on fb(not logged in). Sometimes the page just hangs when opening. The icon spins constantly, the content is visible but unresponsive. In the worst case scenario i can’t even close the tab(can switch to another) and must kill the tab process. The only solution i found is to block external scripts…

      • Dmitry Kirin

Thank you for confirming. I’m logged in to FB. Never noticed, or don’t remember, this behaviour with any other site but Radio Times. Other extensions seem to have no effect, only AdBlock matters.

      • Tommy Wille

Windows 10? If so, it’s a known issue.

    • Tommy Wille

      Are you on Windows 10?

      • Dmitry Kirin

Windows 7. Both 32 and 64-bit versions are affected.
Just checked on Windows 10 – no bug.

  • Marko Koivuniemi

Crash bug in developer version (in OS X 10.11.) Can anyone confirm? Printed some pictures to my daughter. For example: http://activities.raisingourkids.com/connect-dot-to-dot/free/010-printable-connect-dots.gif – then Print dialog and when selected option to print simplified page (Don’t know english term but Finnish version: Pelkistetty sivu) Opera crashes. Printing with default settings works just fine. (I have couple of extension installed didn’t try without them yet.

Btw, clicking on any button (volume, resolution changer, etc) on a Flash based video player works for you?

  • dallasthemaster

Why would you no support vista?! Windows 7 is almost completely compatible with vista. They are barely different at all in the backend!

    • aiphee

It will probably still work, but why guarantee it?

    • http://pedro.albuquerques.net Pedro Albuquerque Santos

I guess that is only because Vista was a huge COMERCIAL failure. I mean, it is 5 years younger than XP and it becomes unsupported at the SAME time?

I mean, I get why XP is abandoned by since even Microsoft cut off Extended Support on April 8, 2014. But Vista still has Extended Support until April 11, 2017. That’s still more than 2 years away. So Chrome/Chromium/Opera should support it until than. The only reason it’s being abandoned is because its use was never very high and it is basically gone these days.

      • dallasthemaster

So what? It literally requires no extra effort. Windows 7 added barely anything new besides front end stuff. Windows vista is so similar to 7 that a windows 7 driver literally works just fine in vista without any editing whatsoever.

Windows NT has not had any major changes that affect program compatibility since Vista. That is why the NT version was only changed by sub-versions in 7,8, and 8.1. (NT 6.1, 6.2, and 6.3) (Windows 10 was even initially going to be NT 6.4 before they went with NT 10)

  • Ralf Brinkmann

These problems with Facebook and flash videos (no keyboard navigation, no video thumbnails) are really boaring. I’m wondering if I go back to the last beta and wait for the next dev version.

    • xirit64

I’m glad I stayed with Windows 7 where those problems don’t exist 😀

      • Ralf Brinkmann

I’m sure it has nothing to do with Windows 7 or 10. And by the way: My Windows 10 looks and works like Windows XP/7. :)

        • xirit64

It may look like W7 but it isn’t that stable as W7 is (yet) :) And really, those problems don’t exist, I was not kidding :)
Amongst IT consultants there was always that motto/unwritten rule:
-When should I upgrade to a newer OS by Microsoft?
-After the first SP (service pack) is out 😛

          • Tommy Wille

That unwritten rule must be rewritten, as Microsoft won’t do service packs for Win10.

          • xirit64

That’s true but what was a service pack other than mostly a collection of patches served as a big file after some additional beta testing? It was mainly the patches of the first year, so in a few months I believe Windows 10 will be at that -far more stable- point :) Don’t call it service pack 1, call it “one year after the initial release” :)

          • Ralf Brinkmann

I have already received the first “SP” (big update).

          • xirit64

All right :) I believe in 5 months from now that it will be much more solid, it usually takes them a year to iron out most of their stuff . Of course it could be an Opera-W10 thing as you said, I’m just talking MS general :)

Nobody said anything like that. However, as some already said, English is the language chosen to be the official and common one is this blog.

Yes, the download manager is still the same messed page that can not be handled by keyboard, only by tennis elbow.

  • José Alberto

    Has Op.Dev got autoupdate?

  • NimeshT

1] When changing themes from Settings (or speed dial settings page), why does the themes get downloaded on every click? There is no caching within the same session too?

2] The navigation buttons on left side from the drawer has the icon for settings too, but the navigation pane is not added to the settings page, present on all other pages.

3] w.r.t Link tool-tip at the bottom, when switching from 1 link to another link with big URL, there is a black overlay for a short fraction of time till the whole URL is displayed (noticed on stable)

    • Nekomajin43

It would be good to pop a confirm window whether I want to use the theme or not. The preview is very small in the theme selector, and if we try one, we may not like it. But then we have to delete it manually or the Themes page will be a mess in a very short time.

Starting with O37 the “Adjust Speed Dial animations for slower hardware” setting is not respected by Opera after a restart.

After I unselect and re-select the setting Opera will stop animating the SD, but after a restart it happens again.

Does this happen to anyone else?

  • beBoss

This build is a bullshit. Black screens, crashes, flash problems…

    • RafaellaG

It is not soooo bad …but it’s also a DEVELOPER build^^

  • Ralf Brinkmann

I just had a problem with downloading *.rar, *.zip and *.pdf files. The download symbol did not appear (so I did not see, that the download had already started) and the files were not saved in the standard download folder, but in the last used upload folder. *.exe is okay. W10x64.

  • taneli

Not sure if already mentioned/reported, but using Facebook’s chat is pretty bad, using numbers will be considered as hotkeys.
And Youtube is still annoying with this browser, as described here:

    taneli • 10 days ago
I’ve had a problem on youtube for O36 and it persisted through to O37:

When refreshing youtube’s subscriptions page (happens on some other pages too), the page refreshes, then after maybe 10 seconds the page starts to refresh again by itself and reloads for ~5sec, during this reload the page is completely unresponsive, console said that this popped up on the second reload:

Resource interpreted as Document but transferred with MIME type text/javascript: “https://s.ytimg.com/yts/jsbin/…”.

… yyyeah, didn’t find a way to link to the comment itself, it only let me share it on social media.

Edit: Clarification on the Facebook issue, it only happens when you start off with a number (say 1 or 2), it inputs the number to the chat, and changes tab after, doesn’t happen if there’s already something on the line before a number.

    • Leonardo Gomes

I don’t have that issue on Facebook.

      • taneli

        Good for you, i guess.

Bug or no bug (aka problem on my side?)
Got an “Unknown Protocol” (…no application associated with “spotify:” protocol…) popup when trying to play music from http://www.last.fm/music/Llynya

    • Leonardo Gomes

You need to have a software associed with that protocol in your computer.

  • Chawoobie

Installed the initial release of Opera developer 37 on both my desktop and laptop. Now, when I open the browser it opens to my home page, but when I go to open a new tab, I get redirected to hao123.com. Has anyone else experienced this? Anything to do with Opera considering deal with Chinese?

    • Leonardo Gomes

Check your computer for malwares. It seems that you got one.

Btw, from where you got the installer?

      • Chawoobie

I’m doing that now. I downloaded from Opera website. Interesting that it only affects Opera 37 on two computers. I also have Opera 35 and 36 on these computers and do not have the problem – only occurs with Opera 37.

        • Leonardo Gomes

And do you know from which mirror the download came from?

          • Chawoobie

No. I downloaded it from the link above.

    Surprise-Day! Today? 😉

Yep, new build – Opera developer 37.0.2157.0 😉

      • Ralf Brinkmann

        I can’t even go on toi… restroom!

        • L33t4opera

Hi Ralf, I’ve been there in the first place, so excited 😉

      • RafaellaG

        YES!

      • Olli

They announced a major new feature. So what is it? I can’t find anything.

        • Ralf Brinkmann

The icons of your installed extensions in the address bar are bigger now. And this new UI on internal pages is standard now. So I had to switch it off to move all the textes for settings back to the middle of my big monitor.

          • Olli

Making a UI standard, that’s already been around for some builds – that’s no major new feature in my opinion. Also already found a bug in it, when speed dial is zoomed, downloads page is also zoomed. Also the extensions’ icons look the same as before in my address bar on OS X.

Probably we’re missing something, they can’t have been working on THIS for more than two weeks. Hopefully we’re getting a blog post soon. 😀

          • xirit64

Unfortunately this is not a bug, it’s how the new “unified” pages work, I’ve reported for example in the past how a zoom of 90% for your bookmarks (to fit more) affects negatively the Speed Dials.

          • Olli

Bookmarks are also zoomed, but about page and settings and extensions page aren’t. Is it really supposed to be that way?

        • Leonardo Gomes

I guess the (big) surprise didn’t make this build.

  • Robert

Flash is working but with many many errors… (no cklickable buttons and such stuff)

    • Leonardo Gomes

      It’s known.

  • Captain Britain

Hi, I am annoyed at the start page, it changes the colour of my picture theme … is this what you are removing in this version when you say remove overlay ?

Secondly, is there going to be an option to have the tab (Speed dial / news / bookmarks etc … placed at the bottom as in Opera 35, rather than being forced to have it on the top left which is a hassle to aim a mouse to when it was so convenient at the bottom ?
