Opera on PPC: A tutorial

Note: Before installing check that the time and date are correct on your Pocket PC. This can effect the installation if they are incorrect.

Opera for Pocket PC

You can choose between downloading a .cab file and a .msi file. The difference is that with a cab-file, you can download Opera directly to your Pocket PC device. Using the msi-file, you are dependent on a Windows PC and need to install it from the PC which is connected to the Pocket PC through ActiveSync. The msi file will install automatically when double clicked.

Option One

Automatic installation Using .msi file

  • Connect the phone to the computer and open ActiveSync if it does not launch automatically.
  • Locate the .msi file from where you downloaded it on your pc.
  • Double-click the .msi file and follow the instructions from the installer.
  • Check your mobile screen to see if any additional steps are needed
  • You can now run Opera using Start > Programs > Opera Browser
  • Click the Opera icon and the browser will start

Option Two

Manual installation Using .cab file

  • Choose the cab file. (Note that if you have a Verizon device, you should choose one of the versions named "Certified for Verizon".)
  • Click Download Opera
  • If you are downloading Opera for the first time, you need to use Pocket Internet Explorer to download Opera. The following message will be appear: "Download the 'opera_wmppc2003_860.cab' to the My Documents folder in Main Memory.
  • Keep "Open the file after download" enabled
  • Press Yes

  • If "Open file after download" isn't enabled, you will need to use File Explorer to locate the cab file in 'My documents'
  • Click the cab file to start installation
  • Follow any instructions to complete the installation.
  • You can now run Opera using Start > Programs > Opera Browser
  • Click the Opera icon and the browser will start

To start browsing

  • Write the Web address in the address field
  • Press the green arrow on the right hand side of the addressfield or press enter
  • And that's it - you can now start surfing the Web provided that your internet connection is set up correctly.

Trouble shooting

Connecting to the Web

If your Pocket PC does not already have a working Internet connection, you will need to configure one to run Opera. This is the connection Opera will use when you launch the browser.

  • Firstly, create a GPRS Connection
  • From the home screen, select Start > Settings > Connections > Connections.
  • Select Add a new modem connection.
  • Enter a name for the connection and select "Cellular line (GPRS)" as the modem type.
  • Select Next and under Access point name, enter the access point information provided by your mobile operator.
  • Select Next and enter any other information provided by your mobile operator (tap "Advanced" for more options).
  • Select Finish to create the connection.
  • Go back to Connections and use Manage existing connections to make sure the connection you just configured is set as default.
