Can I install Opera from a repository?

Many Linux distributions provide Opera as an optional package, available during installation or as a software update.

If you are using an Ubuntu-based distribution, you can get Opera directly from Canonical's commercial repository. Make sure that your package manager is set to display commercial applications, or manually add the commercial repository to your sources.list:

deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu hardy partner

For pre-gutsy versions of Ubuntu, the format is the following:

deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu feisty-commercial main

A more detailed set of instructions is given in the Ubuntu community documentation.

For other Debian-based distros, you can use Opera's repository to ensure that your system will always have the latest stable Opera version. Simply add the following line to your sources.list:

deb http://deb.opera.com/opera RELEASE non-free

Replace "RELEASE" with the release name of your system, either the Debian codename (such as "etch" or "lenny"), or one of the release names ("stable", "testing" or "unstable"). If you want to use the latest beta, simply replace /opera with /opera-beta - but note that there might at any point be a stable release more recent than the last beta.

This repository has two packages available, one named "opera" and one named "opera-static", the former being dynamically linked, and the latter being statically linked. On most recent systems installing the "opera" package should work fine, but if you run into problems starting Opera, try installing the "opera-static" package, which will replace the "opera" package.

To install the repository GPG key, issue the following commands:

gpg --keyserver subkeys.pgp.net --recv-key 6A423791
gpg --fingerprint 6A423791
gpg --armor --export 6A423791| apt-key add -

NOTE! The latest version of Opera is always available for download from http://www.opera.com/download/. Simply select which version of which distribution you are using, and you will be served the correct package for your system. You can also choose to download a regular tarball by ticking "Download this package in .TAR.GZ format". More information on which package to select is available in this article.
