Activating e-mail logging in M2

It is possible to log the communication between M2 and the e-mail server. Such logs can help us to determine what the problem might be if you are having problems sending or receiving mail or news messages.

When you report problems receiving or sending mail to us, it might be wise to include a log with the report. Either paste the log into the report form, or send a followup e-mail with the log attached to the e-mail address which is listed when the report has been submitted.

You create logs by editing a configuration file:

  1. Find the location of the file "accounts.ini" in your mail directory (look in Help > About Opera) and close Opera
  2. Open "accounts.ini" in a text editor

If you cannot find the "accounts.ini" file, please make sure that your profile folder in Windows is not hidden.

Important: Before sending logs to us or others, please remember to remove your password from the log.

To activate logging for incoming mail:

  1. For the account in question, find the line saying: Incoming Log File=
  2. Enter a path and filename, for example: Incoming Log File=C:\incoming-log.txt
  3. Save the file and start Opera
  4. Try to check your mail
  5. Open the log file and remove or hide your password, if it is in the log

To activate logging for outgoing mail:

  1. For the account in question, find the line saying: Outgoing Log File=
  2. Enter a path and filename, for example: Outgoing Log File=C:\outgoing-log.txt
  3. Save the file and start Opera
  4. Try to send mail
  5. Open the log file and remove or hide your password, if it is in the log

It is a good idea to disable logging again after the relevant information is gathered. Simply leave the "Outgoing Log File=" and "Incoming Log file=" options empty.

To activate logging for the IMAP and NNTP (news):

Please follow the instructions for incoming mail.
