Defining a system wide default configuration
The system administrator can define system wide default settings for Opera in two ways: Default settings for first time use or when settings are missing, and preset options that cannot be changed by the users.
- System defaults - Default settings for the first time a user starts Opera. The user's own settings will override this. On Windows, it is called "opera6.ini" and is located in the system directory. The system directory varies between system versions, but normally the placement would be C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 on Windows XP, and C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM on Windows 95 and Windows 98. On Mac, the settings file is stored in /Library/Preferencs/Opera Preferences/, and has the same name as the regular settings file, currently "Opera 9 Preferences". On Linux and Unix, the file is located at /etc/operarc6.
- System fixed settings - Default settings for every time Opera is started. These cannot be changed by the user. On Windows, Opera will look for a file called "operadef6.ini" in the Opera install directory. On Mac, he file is located in /Library/Preferencs/Opera Preferences/Fixed/, and has the same name as the regular settings file, currently "Opera 9 Preferences". On Linux and Unix, the file is located at /etc/opera6rc.fixed
Both these files have the same format as "opera6.ini" ("Opera 9 Preferences" on Mac) in the profile directory.
More information on this is available in Opera's System Administrator's Handbook.
