Opera fails to start, with dialog: "Error initializing Opera: module 9"

If a dialog box labeled "Error initializing Opera: module 9" appears when trying to start Opera, and Opera fails to load, the reason is most likely that the Language File and Language Files Directory settings are incorrect.

To fix this problem manually you can open operaprefs_default.ini in the installation directory (usually C:\Program Files\Opera) and edit two lines.

  • Language File=C:\Program Files\Opera\locale\\.lng
  • Language Files Directory=C:\Program Files\Opera\locale\

If you modify these two lines so that they refer to the correct language you should be able to start Opera again:

  • Language File=C:\Program Files\Opera\locale\en\en.lng
  • Language Files Directory=C:\Program Files\Opera\locale\en
