Many Linux distributions provide Opera as an optional package, available during installation or as a software update.
With Debian- and Ubuntu-based distros, you can use Opera's repository to ensure that your system will always have the latest stable Opera version. Simply add the following line to your sources.list:
deb http://deb.opera.com/opera RELEASE non-free
Replace "RELEASE" with the release name of your system, either the Debian codename (such as "etch" or "lenny"), or one of the release names ("stable", "testing" or "unstable"). If you want to use the latest beta, simply replace /opera with /opera-beta - but note that there might at any point be a stable release more recent than the last beta.
If you are using an Ubuntu-based distribution, detailed instructions are given in the Ubuntu community documentation.
To install the repository GPG key, issue one of the following commands:
Debian user
wget -O - http://deb.opera.com/archive.key | apt-key add -
Ubuntu user
wget -O - http://deb.opera.com/archive.key | sudo apt-key add -
NOTE! The latest version of Opera is always available for download from http://www.opera.com/download/. Simply select which version of which distribution you are using, and you will be served the correct package for your system. You can also choose to download a regular tarball by ticking "Download this package in .TAR.GZ format". More information on which package to select is available in this article.
