Advertising Inventory: Opera Speed Dial Specification

This Specification applies to “Speed Dial” advertising inventory in Opera’s consumer offerings. This Specification includes Part One (General Rules for Speed Dials); Part Two (Speed Dial Template); Part Three (Size, File & Tittle Formats); Part Four (Dos and Don’ts); Part Five (Examples); and Part Six (Content Requirements).

I. General Rules For Speed Dials

  1. Speed Dial is a visual bookmark, not a rotative banner
    • Don’t use photos and complex graphics
    • Keep the design simple
  2. Don’t use call to actions on your logo or Icon, you can use the title instead
    • Speed Dial images need to match clearly the Brand, Service or Products being promoted
    • Make sure the design is consistent with your company’s branding, products or service
    • Make sure the title is instantly readable
  3. Landing Page
    • The promoted site / landing page should have the ability to be navigated and engaged with. Static banners, app download ads or sites with limited usability are not accepted
    • Your landing page needs to have a clear connection with your icon / logo
    • Your speed dial may not be approved if the landing page isn’t fully functional

III. Sizes, file formats, title

Sizes & formats

Please provide us with your proposed Speed Dial in the following sizes:

SDv.2: 272×272 px:

  • The text and creative are centered

  • Format: PNG, without transparency

SD SVGA: 272×272 px:

  • Respect the safe area to fit all screens and devices

  • The main text and creative should be inside the Safe Area (180×180 pixels)

  • Format: PNG, without transparency

SD VGA: 170×170 pixels

  • Respect the safe area to fit all screens and devices

  • The main text and creative should be inside the Safe Area (113×113 pixels)

  • Format: PNG, without transparency

Title

  • Title length: Maximum 10 characters allowed

  • The title needs to match the product / service promoted on your Speed dials. Speed dials must not contain misleading content or deceptive claims and offers

  • Titles should not use any symbols or numbers, only letters are accepted

  • Capitalize the first letter of your title and leave the other letters lowercase: ALL CAPS titles aren’t permitted

IV. Dos and Don’ts

Remember that viewers are probably only going to glance at your banner for a second, make it simple.

Don’t crop the logo

Don’t use photos and 3D graphics

Don’t place too many elements on an icon Speed Dial icon should not appear noisy. It’s an icon, not a banner.

Don’t place big icon without outer margins Always keep margins around the icon. Use guidelines in the template to find a proper size.

Don’t use icons See Sizes section of this document.

Don’t use skeuomorphic icons Avoid using 3D effects, shadows, gradients, light effects, imitation of glass, textures. The icon should be flat, simple, minimalistic.

Don’t add many elements to the icon Keep it simple. The more elements you use, the smaller the icon turns out.

Don’t use dark colors Avoid using dark colors, a low contrast combination of colors, or gradients

Don’t use gradient background

Don’t place too much text on the icon

The icon is too small for long strings of text. Small text is not readable.

Don’t use a white icon on transparent background

You don’t know in what context the icon will be used. That’s why you should avoid using transparent backgrounds. Otherwise your icon may be invisible in some design elements

Don’t use transparent background

If you don’t want to use any color for background, fill it with white color.

Don’t use borders and rounded corners for the icon box

Such styles of decoration will be added automatically in the browser

VI. Content Requirements

  • Speed Dial content should gain user attention and trust. The promoted site /landing page should have the ability to be navigated and engaged with. Static banners, app download ads or sites with limited usability are not advisable.

  • Landing pages and promoted sites / services should work properly in the browser they are promoted in. Site / service to be promoted in Opera Mini should work properly in mini/extreme mode.

  • Speed Dial may not redirect user to Google Play or App Store.

  • Duplicate Speed Dials promoting the same site/service are not allowed.

  • Games & apps sites / subscriptions offering direct APK downloads are not allowed on Opera for Android, Opera Coast and Opera Mini for iPhone

Icon and title

  • A Speed Dial icon should have a clear connection to the content it promotes.

  • The Speed Dial title may not be in all-caps.

  • Speed Dial icon should not appear noisy. It’s an icon, not a banner.

  • Images may not be overly sexual, imply nudity, show excessive amounts of skin or cleavage, or focus unnecessarily on body parts - even if portrayed for artistic or educational reasons.

  • All images are subject to approval by the policy team that determines what is acceptable and in alignment with Opera’s products

Ground rules for speed dial removal

  • Content does not match speed dial. Speed dial’s image or title are misleading as to what user can find when they access the page.

  • Content different than what has been initially approved. Linked webpage changed while speed dial has been published.

  • Offensive content. Speed dial contains or links to content that is inflammatory, discriminatory or defamatory in nature.

  • Content is of questionable quality. Linked websites offer static content, too many ads, or attempt at scamming users.

Lotteries, online casinos, gambling and sports betting

  • Only allowed if particular type of content and its promotion is permitted by local law and if such promotions comply with the norm of the market

  • Promotions may not encourage irresponsible gambling and depict it as an opportunity to earn money and alternative to employment

  • National lotteries and the games the national lottery provider supplies may be promoted if permitted by local law

  • Landing pages must gate access to people above the age of 18 years old and in markets in which permission to promote was granted

  • Site/service should be reputable in a way that user feedback, app store ratings or press reviews are not generally negative

  • Sites cannot lead to locked in subscriptions, engage in phishing and other fraudulent or suspicious practices.

  • Promotions of gambling-related content other than national lotteries must always be pre-approved by Product Manager/Head of Mobile BU and Legal.

Dating sites

  • Promotion of general dating sites is allowed if particular type of content and its promotion is permitted by local law and if such promotions comply with the norm of the market

  • Promotions of dating sites with sexual emphasis is not allowed

  • Promotional images and text as well as landing pages and promoted services themselves may not contain sexually suggestive images, text or video.

  • Sites/services should not in any way border on escort services or prostitution and should not have such promotions as a vertical or sub-set of their site/service.

  • Promotion of dating sites should be gender-neutral. Note: this does not exclude or limit LGBTQ dating sites.

  • Site/service should be reputable in a way that user feedback, app store ratings or press reviews are not overwhelmingly negative. The site should pass a reputation check of Web of Trust: www.mywot.com when using WOT extension and it should not prompt a warning when accessed through Opera Coast. The site will not be accepted if WOT reviews from last 6 months are predominantly negative (“I don’t trust” or “suspicious”)

  • Sites cannot lead to locked in subscriptions, engage in phishing and other fraudulent or suspicious practices.
