Signing up for an Opera Web Mail account

To sign up for an Opera Web Mail account please follow this step by step procedure:

  1. Go to operamail.com.
  2. Click on the "Sign up for free Opera Web Mail >>" link.
  3. Read the Terms of Service, take special note of chapter 13, and accept.
  4. Choose a valid username. If the username you choose is already in use you will be notified, and alternative usernames will be shown.
  5. Enter all relevant information. All fields marked with ** need to be filled in, except ZIP code, which is for US citizens only.
  6. Enter the obscured word. This can be a bit tricky. The obscured word can be hard to read. If you enter it incorrectly, the page will reset all sensitive information (password etc) and you need to fill this in again. If you find the word too hard to read, click on the "here" link underneath, and it will give you a new word.
  7. Enter hint question and answer.
  8. Click the "Sign me up" button.
  9. If you would not like to upgrade to Opera Web Mail Premium, but have a basic, free account, click on the "No thanks" button on the page that is displayed.
  10. Your account should now be ready to use.

If you want more storage space and access to more features, please see the tutorial page on Opera Web Mail Premium.

Getting Started with Opera Web Mail

Once you have set up an Opera Web Mail account, go to: operamail.com to sign in to your account for sending and reading e-mail messages. The first screen you see after the login is how many percent of your storage space you are using, and a message summary that states the number of messages in your inbox, and whether there are any new messages.

Writing an E-mail Message

Log in to Opera Web Mail and click the "Compose" button. Fill in the fields "To" and "Subject", and write the e-mail message. As a basic Opera Web Mail user, you can only receive and write e-mail messages through the Web interface on operamail.com. Premium users have access to the POP3 and SMTP services of Opera Web Mail. If you click on an e-mail address on a Web page, the e-mail client you have defined in Opera will open.

Importing Contacts

To import your address books from other e-mail clients such as Outlook, Netscape, or Eudora to your Opera Web Mail e-mail account, click Contacts > Import/Export after you have logged in.

To import from Opera's built-in e-mail client's contact list, please see these instructions.

Filtering Messages

You may filter e-mail messages directly to a personal e-mail folder.

  1. Go to "Options > Mail Filters"
  2. Check "Enable", and type in for example:
  3. "From Equals" xxxxx@operamail.com
  4. Then move to: "Personal folder".

Changing Your Password

To change your password in Opera Web Mail please follow these instructions:

  1. Go to operamail.com
  2. Log in to your e-mail account
  3. Click "Options"
  4. Click "Change Password"
  5. Enter your current password and your new password.

Handling Spam

Opera Web Mail is protected by Outblaze's spam filter, but some spam may still slip through. If you are receiving spam from one particular sender, you may block the sender's e-mail address.

Click Options > Mail filters and enter the e-mail address in the first text box and click "Update". Spam from this sender will now go directly to your trash folder.

You may also help Outblaze improve their spam filter if you are receiving spam. Mark the checkbox for the e-mail in your Inbox and click the button "Report spam".

For more information about spam, please visit our knowledge base article about spam.

Gathering All Your E-mail with Opera Web Mail

With Opera Web Mail you can collect e-mail from all of your external e-mail accounts into one convenient location.

  5. Enter the "Password":
  6. Do not edit the "Timeout" or "Port" settings unless you have received specific Port or Timeout settings from the service provider of the other e-mail account.

  2. Click "Options > Preferences"
  3. Scroll to the bottom of the page
  4. Under the Option "Empty trash can on logout" select "Yes"
  5. Click Update

When Logging in Fails

To log in to your Opera Web Mail account, please enter your username and password the following information in the relevant fields on the login page.

If your login fails, please check to be sure that you entered the correct username and password.

If you are using Opera make sure to enable automatic redirection and referrer logging in Tools > Preferences > Advanced > Network.

You may also want to try setting Opera to accept all cookies from all servers if login still fails.

If the instructions above do not solve the login problem, please contact the Opera Web Mail support team.
