Introduction

Opera for handhelds and mobiles is a full Internet browser that gives you access to any kind of Web site.

With Opera, you can

  • access the full Web
  • use the entire screen for browsing in full-screen view
  • skip headings and menus and jump to text
  • use keypad shortcuts for quick access to important features
  • bookmark your favorite sites
  • download images and other files to your phone

Setting Up Internet Access

To first set up your phone to connect to the Internet, you will need to define an Internet Access Point (IAP), a GPRS or high-speed connection. If your phone is not set up with an access point, you can add one manually.

Preconfigured access points

If preconfigured access points are available, select the option that has the word "Internet" in it, rather than, for example, "MMS" or "WAP".

Manually adding access points

  • Go to your phone's main menu
  • Open Tools > Settings
  • Select "Connection" and "Access points "
  • Press "Options" and select "New access point"
  • If asked, choose "Default settings"

Opera provides an on-line guide for setting up access points: www.opera.com/connect/

Once you open Opera, a connection dialog will pop up if you are not connected to the Internet. When prompted, select your defined access point and your phone will establish a connection.

Tip: Go to Opera's settings to select a default access point, or even set Opera to connect automatically.

Opening Web Pages

Select "Options > Open > Web Page" or press 1. Enter a Web address (URL) and click "OK".

Tip: Press the joystick down to choose between prefixes and suffixes to avoid typing the entire URL.

Tip: Press the joystick up for a history of previously entered addresses.

Go to Tools > Search or simply press 9 to search the Web directly without first accessing a search engine site.

Opera makes navigation on a small screen uncomplicated.

Basic page navigation

  • Moving the joystick up and down scrolls the page.
  • Moving the joystick right and left navigates between links.
  • Pushing the joystick in opens links.

On some pages tailored for mobile phones, you will find that Opera has four-way navigation; moving the joystick in any direction will take you to the next link in that direction.

The small, blue indicator on the right side of the screen is your "scroll bar", telling you where you are on the current page.

Jump to text

Access the settings to make Opera automatically jump to the first text portion of a Web page. Skipping such elements as menus and headings significantly speeds up browsing and navigation. If you prefer the manual setting, you can still press 3 to go directly to the "Jump to text" point, which will then function as a pre-set tag.

Tags

Tags are temporary bookmarks you can set on a Web page to easily jump between points in the document and find your way back to items you would like to explore further.

Set a tag by pressing 6. The tag will be visible as a small, white indicator in the scroll bar area on the right side of the screen; when you are at a tag's exact location, the blue indicator will cover the white one.

All tags are deleted when the page is reloaded. Pages are not reloaded when using the browser's "Back" function, which makes tags a convenient way of marking, for example, all links to articles you would like to read on a news page. Follow an article link, read it, go back to the originating page, and move to the next tag.

Press 3 to move between tags that you have set in a page.

Display Modes

Go to Options > Display to get access to Opera's different display modes.

Full screen

The entire screen will be used for browsing if you activate Opera's full-screen mode. This mode is off by default.

Press * (or use the menu) to turn full-screen mode on or off.

Fit to screen

Opera's Small-Screen Rendering™ (SSR) technology reformats Web pages to fit your screen. This is enabled by default to ensure a comfortable surfing experience on a small screen. If disabled, Opera will show Web pages without this alteration.

Press # (or use the menu) to turn Small-Screen Rendering off or on.

Keypad Shortcuts

Using keypad shortcuts is a lot faster than using menus. Therefore, the buttons on your phone's numeric keypad have been assigned functions. Please note that these shortcuts are not available after pressing "Options" to open the menus.

  • * Full-screen mode on/off
  • # Small-Screen Rendering on/off
  • 1 Open Web page
  • 2 Open bookmarks
  • 3 Go to next tag in page
  • 4 Open home page
  • 5 Load images on/off
  • 6 Set tag
  • 7 Add bookmark for page
  • 8 Open settings
  • 9 Search the Web
  • 0 Load next image

Tip: The phone browser's home page has a direct link to a local copy of the keypad shortcut overview.

Filling In Forms

Many Web pages, such as search engines and e-mail services, include form fields that require entering text.

  • Press the joystick left/right to move between form field, and push the joystick in to activate
  • Boxes and buttons that are focused will be highlighted
  • Use the keypad to enter text in the input fields
  • When you are done entering the text, push the joystick again and move to the next form field or to the submit/search button

Note: Your phone's dictionary/T9 function will be automatically disabled for password form fields.

Viewing Images

By default, Opera downloads and displays images. Since Web pages can have a large amount of images that take time to download, you can also choose not to load any images, or to load only some of the images on the Web page.

Press 5 to toggle image loading directly, or change the default in Opera's settings.

Bookmarks

The easiest way to bookmark a Web page is to press 7. To manage your bookmarks,

  • press 2 (or use the menu) to open the bookmarks view
  • press joystick up/down to highlight a bookmark
  • select Options > Manage bookmarks > Properties/edit

Opera recognizes bookmark nicknames; you can enter and save short, easy-to-remember names for as many bookmarks as you wish under "Properties/edit". To open a bookmark by its nickname, just press 1 and enter the nickname.

Tip: While in "Bookmarks" view, you can move the joystick right to go to the "Transfers" tab.

Privacy

If you share or occasionally lend your mobile phone, you may be concerned about others viewing your browsing history. To clear all private data stored by the browser, use Tools > Delete private data after finishing your browsing session.

You may of course also set the browser not to cache any information, but note that this is likely to slow down browsing significantly.
