Using SMTP authentication

Some Internet service providers (ISPs) and e-mail services may require SMTP authentication, which means that a username and password has to be sent to the server before it allows you to send mail. This measure is normally taken to prevent the servers being abused to send spam.

SMTP authentication is supported in all versions of Opera since Opera 7. To set up SMTP for an account, please follow these steps:

  1. Go to Tools > Mail and chat accounts
  2. Select the account you need SMTP authentication for and click the "Edit" button.
  3. Select the "Servers" tab in the "Account properties" dialog box
  4. Enter your username and password under the "Outgoing SMTP server"
  5. Set "Authentication" to "Auto". If this does not work, you can try each option, from the top, until you reach one that works.

Contact your ISP or your e-mail provider if you do not know the incoming and outgoing server names (POP/IMAP and SMTP) for your e-mail account.
