Authentication errors when sending or receiving mail

If you get authentication errors when sending or receiving mail, please check your authentication method:

  1. Go to Tools > Mail and Chat Accounts....
  2. Select the account you are having problems with and click "Edit...".
  3. Under the Servers tab, check the Authentication dropdown. It should normally be set to "Auto" for incoming server. You can try selecting "Plaintext" for incoming or "None" for outgoing.
  4. Click "OK" to save the change and close the account properties dialog.

Examples of error messages:

  • "SMTP authentication not supported by server."
  • "Server dropped connection while authenticating."
  • "POP3 server unavailable. Network problems?"
