How to upgrade from older Opera versions to the latest final version

There are three ways of installing or upgrading to Opera from earlier versions:

  1. Installing over your existing installation of Opera
If you are using a previous final version, upgrading to the latest stable/final version of Opera is simply a matter of installing over your existing installation. Opera will pick up all your settings automatically.
  2. Clean install
This means installing Opera in a new (empty) folder, and this is what we recommend doing if you are already using Opera 6 or older, or a beta version of Opera.
  3. Installing the latest final version over your existing Opera beta installation
If you have beta tested Opera, this is possible, but not recommended. Most people should not have any problems, but if you are upgrading from the 7.0 beta versions, you will lose your existing Wand data, and due to changes from the beta versions to the final version, you may see problems under certain circumstances.

Step-by-step guide on how to upgrade to the latest Opera version

  1. Download
Go to our download page, choose the location you want to download from and click the "Download now" button. Take note of the folder on your computer to which you download the file.
  2. Backup
Make a backup of important files before you install Opera. It is generally recommended to make a backup of important files like e-mail, bookmarks etc. Please read about taking a backup of your Opera settings and data.
  3. Install
Double-click on the installation file. When asked to select the "Destination directory" enter the location of the folder into which you want to install Opera. Make sure this folder is a new (empty) one if you want to perform a clean install. Click "Next" and follow the on-screen instructions.
  4. Import
If you performed a clean install, you can now start to import your old data like e-mail, bookmarks etc. To import your bookmarks you can either copy the Opera6.adr file from the old to the new Opera folder, or you can import your old bookmarks from the File > Import menu. You can also import your Opera 6 e-mail from that menu.
