Server name completion is a handy feature that saves you typing. For instance, if you want to retrieve the URL http://www.opera.com/, all you need to do is type "opera" and press Enter. Opera will then add the prefix "www" and the suffix "com" by default.

You can change the way Opera does server name completion by going to either (Windows/UNIX) Settings > Preferences > Advanced > Network or (Mac) Opera > Preferences > Advanced > Network and clicking the "Server name completion" button.

If you are on a local network, you can set Opera to look for a local machine first by checking the "Look for local network machine" box. If you are not in a network, this check can delay things.

In the text boxes below, you can specify how Opera should complete the addresses.

• A prefix is what goes in the beginning of the Web address, but after http://.
• A suffix is what comes at the end. If you, for instance, live in Germany and would like to access Yahoo Germany rather than Yahoo in the USA, you can add "de" to the beginning of the list of suffixes, and Opera will first look for the URL in the .de domain.

You can have multiple types of starts and ends for URLs in Opera. Make sure that you separate each prefix or suffix with a comma, as in the following example:

Prefixes: www, www2, www3, home
Suffixes: com, org, net, co.uk, co.jp

Naturally, you fill in your own favorite types of prefixes and suffixes. The first items in the list are the ones that are tried first.

If you don't want to have server name completion at all, just uncheck the "Try name completion, using" box.
