If you use Outlook Express as your e-mail client, open the "Tools" menu and go to Preferences > Advanced > Programs. Select the "mailto" option and click the "Edit" button.

Next, choose the "Open with other application" option, and click the "Choose" button to locate the executable file for Outlook Express. The file's location is usually C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe.

You must now add the command line option "/mailurl:mailto:%" to the "Open with other application" text field, and the result should look something like this:
