Bringing the Web to the People: Opera delivers browser to ZZvcom STB to facilitate remote education program in rural China
Oslo, Norway and Beijing, China – June 13, 2006
Opera will deliver its Opera SDK for Devices to ZZvcom's NDVB 9000 series of set-top
boxes (STB) for the Chinese market. Opera will provide the full Web browser for these
devices, allowing Chinese users to access the complete Internet in addition to IPTV
content from their homes.
The target market for ZZvcom's NDVB 9000 series STBs are individuals living in rural areas of China. This STB deployment to rural China enables the Chinese government to deliver its remote education program to citizens who may not otherwise have access to education. As this is considered a low-end STB, mass volumes are expected to be shipped.
"Our STB is more than just an entertainment device, it is literally a communication tool to reach the remote citizens of our country," says Mr Wang Feng, chairman of board, ZZvcom. "Using the Opera browser, we can deliver this much needed content, which includes information on current events and other educational material. For this important service, we needed a reliable and fast browser that would not be affected by device limitations. Opera was the only browser that met our requirements."
In addition to full Web browsing, Opera serves as a presentation engine for the NDVB 9000 series STBs. This allows ZZvcom to use Opera to develop dynamic Web applications using Web technologies such as AJAX. "China is a fast growing STB market and Opera is jumping on board with this growth and providing a solution that helps China to reach its most remote citizens," says Jon von Tetzchner, CEO, Opera Software. "Opera is a powerful tool for a STB, enabling the full Internet on the TVs of individuals who may not have access to the Internet otherwise. We are proud to be a part of this project."
