i3 Micro Technology Signs with Opera
Norwegian and Swedish Infotainment leaders join forces
Oslo, Norway and Stockholm, Sweden - July 1, 2002
i3 micro technology and Opera Software today announced that Opera will be included in i3's set-top box - Mood Box. Adding to the already impressive technology available in the Mood Box, Opera will be used to render multimedia content as well as to create custom user interface in applications for digital TV and video-on-demand.
The i3 set-top box will use parts of the Linux version of Opera's embedded for infotainment. Using its cross-platform modular architecture, Opera's modules can be detached and used as stand-alone components within other applications. The Mood Box uses the Opera embedded browser engine to render Web content and display custom user interfaces created in HTML. This solution makes it possible to easily customize the set of infotainment applications by simply downloading the appropriate user interface for a given application and/or user profile. Thanks to this approach and Opera's low memory footprint, the resources required by the device are minimal, reducing complexity and cost.
"We at Opera have been very impressed with i3's broadband set-top box," says Jon S. von Tetzchner, CEO, Opera Software ASA. "Together with Opera's technology, i3 is delivering a strong technological solution for the broadband set-top box market at an attractive cost."
The Mood Box is a next-generation set-top box, designed to fit into any residential home, hotel room or commercial setting - providing users with IP-based real-time TV, video-on-demand, pay-per-view, music-on-demand, Internet browsing, e-mail and more. The Mood Box is part of the Mood product family which consists of set-top boxes, various streaming servers and a management system.
"i3's business is to provide the technology needed for realizing value-added services like content-on-demand and Internet browsing on a regular TV-set," says Hans Holmberg, President, i3 micro technology. "The Opera embedded web browser is a vital component in our set-top box. Its excellent performance makes it the perfect tool for creating attractive user interfaces in various applications for digital TV."
