Opera Software today releases Opera Mini™ in Germany, providing mobile users with access to the entire Web. Opera Mini is the tiny and revolutionary Web browser that turns almost any mobile phone into a full-fledged surfing machine. The browser is free of charge when downloaded with WAP and costs Euro 0.49 when downloaded via SMS.
Getting Opera Mini is as easy as downloading a ringtone. To download Opera Mini, users in Germany can simply send an SMS with OPERA to 88881. Alternatively, users can direct their mobile phones' WAP-browsers to http://mini.opera.com
"With Opera Mini, most of the 60 million mobile users in Germany can now access the entire Internet with the mobile phones they already have," says Jon S. von Tetzchner, CEO, Opera Software. "For example, commuters can check Gmail, read the local news site or research holiday destinations. There's almost no limit to what they can do."
The launch in Germany follows the recent release of Opera Mini in the Nordic countries. Many new users have reacted with surprise to the low cost of using the browser to surf their favorite sites. Due to Opera Mini's ability to compress data (pictures and text), a content-heavy front page such as Stern.de only needs a 58Kb download (approximately 20% of its normal size). In addition, users don't need to upgrade their current operator service plan.
Opera Mini allows users to access the full Web on the 700+ million Java-enabled mobile phones around the world. This includes the vast majority of today's WAP- enabled phones. Instead of requiring the phone to process Web pages, Opera Mini uses a remote server to pre-process the page before sending it to the phone.
Businesses that want to reach mobile customers can receive customized versions of Opera Mini. Operators, broadcasters, mobile content providers, handset manufacturers and others can take advantage of Opera Mini's fast and easy way to make content available on all handsets.
