Opera Software and OS/2 Netlabs today announced their collaboration to bring the Opera Browser to the OS/2 platform. Producing the OS/2 port is a worldwide OS/2 Netlabs developer team. Called "Opera-OS/2" the initiative will streamline HTML viewing and provide a fast, small-footprint, flexible browser to the OS/2 community.
Opera-OS/2 will include technologies that will ensure efficient, high-quality representation of HTML documents and promises to simplify HTML rendering with lighter tighter coding and the rich feature set provided in Opera 3.60. Benefits to the OS/2 community include faster World Wide Web browsing and HTML viewing with a stable, up-to-date, and feature rich environment.
"This initiative is great news for OS/2 users who since 1997 have been asking that Opera be ported to the OS/2 Operating System." said Jon Stephenson von Tetzchner, co-founder and CEO of Opera Software. "With Netlabs we know that the speed and efficiency people have come to expect from Opera will be translated to OS/2. We are, quite simply, in the best hands possible with this port and look forward to seeing our browser on OS/2."
"We are looking forward to releasing the Opera browser on the OS/2 platform" said Adrian Gschwend, founder of OS/2 Netlabs. "I think it is very important to provide an up-to-date, fast and small browser for the OS/2 community. Opera Software is providing exactly what we need and I am sure that we at OS/2 Netlabs will be able to quickly provide a fast and stable port of Opera for OS/2. Bringing Opera to OS/2 will definitely give the OS/2 community a better Internet experience."
OS/2 Netlabs is a collaborative software development effort aimed at creating new OS/2 Software. The projects are managed and developed by groups of volunteers located around the whole world by using the Internet and the Web to communicate, plan and develop the applications. OS/2 Netlabs has already ported many software applications from Linux and Windows to OS/2. OS/2 Netlabs is headquartered in Biel, Switzerland. OS/2 Netlabs can be reached on the World Wide Web at www.netlabs.org.
