Opera for handhelds and mobiles is a full Internet browser that gives you access to any kind of Web site.

Installing Opera

  1. Use Bluetooth, infrared file transfer, or a USB connection to copy the .sis file to your phone. If you do not have access to either, send the file to your phone as an e-mail attachment.
  2. Open your phone's inbox and select the .sis file you just transferred. This should start the installation. Some phones come with PC software to handle installations, you may of course also use this.

If your phone has very little free memory left, you will likely get an out-of-memory message during installation.

  1. Try removing unnecessary files from your phone. If you have already received the message "Saving file to Installer", you can safely delete the Opera .sis file from your inbox, which should free enough memory to finish the installation.
  2. Go to Tools > Manager and select the Opera installation file. Go to Options > Install, then follow the instructions.

Tip: Installing to a memory card is recommended, as it will leave more memory for browsing and for other applications.

Internet Access

To first set up your phone to connect to the Internet, you will need to define an Access Point, a GPRS or high-speed connection. If preconfigured access points are available, select the option that has the word "Internet" in it, rather than, for example, "MMS" or "WAP".

If your phone is not set up with an access point, please contact your network operator for assistance. You may also set it up yourself; Opera provides an on-line guide for manually setting up access points at www.opera.com/connect/

Once you open Opera, a connection dialog will pop up if you are not connected to the Internet. Select your defined access point and your phone will establish a connection.

Tip: Go to Opera's settings to select a default access point, or set Opera to connect automatically.

Select "Options > Open > Web page" or press 1. Enter a Web address (URL) and click "OK".

Auto-completion

Opera's auto-completion function will find and suggest Web addresses from your browsing history and bookmarks while you type. Use the joystick to select one of the suggested options. You will also be offered to search the Web for the entered term.

Opera makes navigation on a small screen fast and easy:

  • Moving the joystick in either direction navigates to the next link in that direction.
  • Pushing the joystick in opens links.
  • Pressing 9 scrolls an entire page height down, while 6 scrolls one page height up.
  • Pressing 3 lets you jump from the top of the page to the Jump to text point (see below) to the bottom of the page and back to the top

Jump to text

Access the settings to make Opera automatically jump to the first text portion of a Web page. Skipping such elements as menus and headings significantly speeds up browsing and navigation. If you prefer the manual setting, you can still press 3 to go directly to the "Jump to text" point, which will then function as a pre-set tag.

Full-screen Mode

The entire screen will be used for browsing if you activate Opera's full-screen mode. This mode is off by default.

Press * (or go to the Options > Display menu) to turn full-screen mode on or off.

Fit to Screen

Opera's Small-Screen Rendering™ (SSR) technology reformats Web pages to fit your screen. This is enabled by default to ensure a comfortable surfing experience on a small screen. If Fit to screen is disabled, Opera will show Web pages unaltered.

Press # or go to Options > Display > Fit to screen to turn Small-Screen Rendering off or on.

Keypad Shortcuts

Using keypad shortcuts is a lot faster than using menus. Therefore, the buttons on your phone's numeric keypad have been assigned functions.

Use the zoom function to make tiny writing readable or get the overview of large Web pages. Go to Options > Display > Zoom or press 0 to start zooming.

Filling in Forms

Many Web pages, such as search engines and e-mail services, include form fields that require entering text.

  • Press the joystick left/right to move between the form fields, and push the joystick in to activate the focused field, which will be highlighted
  • Use the keypad to enter text in the input fields
  • When you are done entering the text, push the joystick again to deactivate, then move to the next form field or to the button that submits the form

Password manager

When you have filled out a login form for a Web site, Opera will offer to store your username and password for future visits.

If you accept, Opera will pre-fill the login form next time you visit the site, and you can submit the login form by going to Options > Log in. Note that Opera will only store one login per site.

If you share your phone, you may select to protect the stored logins with a master password. To erase saved logins, go to Options > Tools > Private data

Viewing and Saving Images

By default, Opera downloads and displays images. Since Web pages can have a large amount of images that take time to download, you can choose to speed up your browsing by not loading any images at all, or only images previously cached by the browser.

Press 5 to toggle image loading directly, or change the default in Opera's settings.

To save an image from a Web page, select it, then press the joystick or middle button and the "Image" menu will open. You may then choose to either save the image locally or send it as an MMS.

Launch your image gallery from the phone's menu to view your saved images.

Bookmarks

The easiest way to bookmark a Web page is to press 7. To manage your bookmarks, press 2 or go to Options > Open > Bookmarks.

Opera recognizes bookmark nicknames; you can enter and save short, easy-to-remember names for as many bookmarks as you wish in the bookmark manager. To open a bookmark by its nickname, just press 1 and enter the nickname.

Tip: While in "Bookmarks" view, you can move the joystick right to go to the "Downloads" tab.

Privacy

If you share or occasionally lend your mobile phone, you may be concerned about others viewing your browsing history. Go to Tools > Private data after finishing your browsing session, to delete cache, history, cookies, and stored logins.

Features for Power Users

Customizable keypad shortcuts

You can edit the keypad shortcut setup to suit your use and preferences by going to Options > Settings > Shortcuts. You will then be able to assign keypad shortcuts to more functions than are available in the default shortcut setup.

Tags

Tags are temporary bookmarks you can set on a Web page. Try, for example, tagging all links to articles you would like to read on a news page. Follow a link, read it, go back, then move to the next tag.

You need to set up a customized keypad shortcut to use tags. When you press the assigned key, the tag will be visible as a small, white indicator in the scroll bar area on the right side of the screen. When you are at a tag's exact location, the blue indicator will cover the white one.

Pressing 3 will then also let you move between tags that you have set in a page.

Note that all tags are deleted when the page is reloaded. Pages are not reloaded when using the browser's "Back" function.
