Quick guide to Opera Mobile 10 beta

This guide covers basic information for using Opera Mobile 10 on both touchscreen and regular keypad phones. Throughout this guide, the options for touchscreen are given first.

Starting Opera Mobile 10

To start Opera Mobile 10, navigate to the /application/ folder and select the Opera Mobile 10 icon.

  1. The title bar displays across the top. For keypad models, this also displays tabs. For more information, see “Using tabs” below.
  2. Under the titlebar is a bar with the address field on the left, and the search field on the right side. The fields dynamically expand to suit your needs.
  3. The main browser window displays the Speed Dial. It is a 3x3 grid of “dials”, each representing a Web address bookmark. Speed Dial allows you to access your most favorite Web sites quickly. For more details, see “Using Speed Dial” below.
  4. The overlay menu contains buttons for basic navigation, such as Back, Forward, Reload/Stop. There are specific additional buttons for touchscreen and keypad models. See the “Overlay menu” section, below, for more details.
  5. Soft keys, for keypad phones only, toggle the overlay menu or access tabs.

Basic browsing

To go to a Web page from the start screen, follow these steps:

  1. Select the address field.
  2. Type a Web address.
  3. Tap or click “Go”.

To search the Web directly from the start screen, select the search field in the upper right corner, type your search term, then tap or click the Search button.

To search for a specific word or phrase in the current Web page, follow the steps below:

  1. For keypad models, click “Menu” to display the overlay menu.
  2. On the overlay menu, tap or click Tools > Find in Page.
  3. Type the word or phrase you want to find. All matching instances are highlighted.
  4. If there is more than one matching instance, tap “Next” or click to go to the next instance.

Pages display in an overview mode when first loaded. This mode displays the pages zoomed out a little to show more of the page. To view a section of the page, follow these steps:

  1. Drag or use the arrow keys to pan around the page and find an area you want to view more clearly.
  2. To zoom in on content, tap or click the area.
  3. To zoom out, tap or click the zoom out button Zoom Out to the left of the overlay menu.

The overlay menu

The overlay menu for all phones contains navigation buttons to go back, go forward, reload and stop. The reload button turns into the stop button when pages are loading.

For touchscreen phones, the overlay menu also contains the following additional buttons:

Nav Tabs Tabs button Displays the tabs tray where you can add new, or switch, tabs. See “Using tabs” below.
Nav Tools Tools button Gives you access to your bookmarks, history, saved pages, settings, help, and allows you to exit the Opera browser.

For keypad phones, the overlay menu contains the following additional buttons:

Nav Startup Start page Displays the start page containing your Speed Dial.
Nav Exit Exit Closes the Opera browser.
Nav Pullie Tools Gives you access to your bookmarks, history, saved pages, settings, and help.

Using Speed Dial

To save a Web address to your Speed Dial, which gives you easy access to your favorite Web sites, follow these steps:

  1. Click an empty dial. Empty dials have a + sign.
  2. Either enter the Web address in the address field, or select an address from the history list.
  3. Once you have added the site to Speed Dial, it will appear in the dial you chose; just click the dial to access it.

To edit a dial, long-click it. A context menu prompts you to either edit and choose a new Web site, or to clear it to create a blank dial.

Bookmarking a Web page

To bookmark a Web page that is currently displayed, follow these steps:

  1. For keypad models, click “Menu” to display the overlay menu. For touchscreen phones, tap the “Tools”-button.
  2. Go to Tools > Bookmarks and tap or click the Web page in the list. It should be at the top.
  3. The Add Bookmarks dialog displays, and you can edit the bookmark properties, if needed.
  4. Tap or click the Add button at the bottom of the dialog. The Web page is saved in your bookmarks so you can access it another time.
  5. To return to browsing, tap or click “Back”.

Using tabs

Touchscreen phones

To add a new tab, follow these steps:

  1. Tap the Tabs button on the overlay menu. This opens the Tabs tray.
  2. Tap the empty tab, denoted by a + sign) on the right side of the tabs tray.
  3. Go to a new Web page.

To close a tab, tap the Tabs button on the overlap menu and tap the small Close Tab icon in the top, right corner of the tab.

Keypad phones

To add a new tab, follow these steps:

  1. Click “Menu” to display the overview menu.
  2. Navigate to the title bar at the top of the window.
  3. Click the empty tab, denoted by a + sign, on the right side of the tabs tray.
  4. Go to a new Web page.

To close a tab, click “Menu” to display the overlap menu, navigate to the title bar and click the “Close tab” soft key.

Changing settings

You can manage how the browser handles images, toggle Opera Turbo, change display settings, protect your data, and change advanced settings.

To change these settings, display the overlay menu and go to Tools > Settings. A list of options displays, including the following:

Load images You can toggle the loading of images on or off. For faster browsing and lower cost, you may choose not to load new images. When deactivated, only images that have already been cached locally by Opera display.
Enable Opera Turbo You can toggle Opera Turbo on or off. When on, this free service speeds up browsing on slow connections.
Mobile View Web pages are often not designed with a small screen in mind. If this mode is on, the display of Web pages is optimized to suit a small screen. In this mode, page overview and zoom are disabled.
Fullscreen mode You can toggle fullscreen mode. When on, this displays the entire screen for browsing.
Zoom A Web page first loads as an overview, where you can zoom in on the content. This settings allows you to change the default zoom level, from a range of 60% to 200%.
Privacy This setting allows you to manage passwords, cookies, history and cache, as follows:
Password manager When enabled, the password manager remembers your usernames and passwords for sites you commonly use, if you decide to save them when prompted.
Accept cookies When enabled, you can accept cookies from sites you visit. Some cookies can be used to construct a profile of your browsing habits, and may be regarded by some as a privacy issue. If you are concerned about this, disable this option. Be aware that some Web sites may not work as designed if cookies are required.
Clear cache Caching documents allows for faster retrieval of Web contents. You can delete files in the cache to free up memory.You can also delete your private data — history, cookies and passwords — if you want to protect your privacy, for example, if you are sharing your phone with someone else.
Advanced With this setting, you can allow or disallow pop-ups associated with Web sites.
Overlay menu For touchscreen phones, you can also toggle the overlay menu. If you disable this setting, a button in the right bottom corner is used to access the overlay menu.

Exiting the Opera browser

When you have finished browsing the Internet, you can close the Opera browser. Depending on your phone, follow the steps below to exit the browser:

  • Touchscreen: Tap the Tools button, then the Exit button.
  • Keypad: Click the Menu button, then the Exit button.
