Opera Mail is built into the Opera browser, so all you need to get started is the Opera browser and an email address! Configure Opera Mail with Gmail, Yahoo, AOL or any other service.

Import your messages from Thunderbird, Outlook Express, Eudora, Netscape Mail (Mozilla Suite), Thunderbird or any mailbox stored in the generic mbox format.

Gmail

  1. First, enable POP or IMAP in your Gmail account.
  2. Go to Tools > Mail and Chat accounts.
  3. If you have not yet created an account, you are prompted to create one, or just click Add.
  4. Select E-mail and press Next.
  5. In the dialog, type the following and click Next:
    • Real name — this is the name that displays in the From field of e-mails you send
    • E-mail address — your complete Gmail email address.
    • Organization — Name of your organization (optional)
  6. In the dialog, type the following:
    • Login Name — your Gmail login name
    • Password — your Gmail password
  7. Depending on the service you enabled in your Gmail account, select POP or IMAP and click Finish.

If you are using IMAP with Gmail, go through the following settings after setting up your IMAP account, to optimally sync your Gmail account with Opera Mail:

  1. Go to Mail > IMAP Folders.
  2. Under Accounts select your Gmail account.
  3. Now, uncheck the following folders:
    • [Gmail]/All Mail
    • [Gmail]/Spam
    • [Gmail]/Trash
  4. Click Ok

Yahoo

  1. First, enable POP in your Yahoo account.
  2. Go to Tools > Mail and Chat accounts.
  3. If you have not yet created an account, you are prompted to create one, or just click Add.
  4. Select E-mail and press Next.
  5. In the dialog, type the following and click Next:
    • Real name — this is the name that displays in the From field of e-mails you send
    • E-mail address — your complete Yahoo email address
    • Organization — Name of your organization (optional)
  6. In the dialog, type the following:
    • Login Name — your Yahoo login name
    • Password — your Yahoo password
  7. Select Regular e-mail (POP) and click Finish.

AOL

  1. Go to Tools > Mail and Chat accounts.
  2. If you have not yet created an account, you are prompted to create one, or just click Add.
  3. Select E-mail and press Next.
  4. In the dialog, type the following and click Next:
    • Real name — this is the name that displays in the From field of e-mails you send
    • E-mail address — your complete AOL email address.
    • Organization — Name of your organization (optional)
  5. In the dialog, type the following:
    • Login Name — your AOL login name
    • Password — your AOL password
  6. Select IMAP and click Finish.

Generic Opera Mail config (POP)

  1. Go to Tools > Mail and Chat accounts.
  2. If you have not yet created an account, you are prompted to create one, or just click Add.
  3. Select E-mail and press Next.
  4. In the dialog, type the following and click Next:
    • Real name — this is the name that displays in the From field of e-mails you send
    • E-mail address — your complete email address.
    • Organization — Name of your organization (optional)
  5. In the dialog, type the following:
    • Login Name — your login name
    • Password — your password
  6. Select POP and click Finish.

Generic Opera Mail configuration (IMAP)

  1. Go to Tools > Mail and Chat accounts.
  2. If you have not yet created an account, you are prompted to create one, or just click Add.
  3. Select E-mail and press Next.
  4. In the dialog, type the following and click Next:
    • Real name — this is the name that displays in the From field of e-mails you send
    • E-mail address — your complete email address.
    • Organization — Name of your organization (optional)
  5. In the dialog, type the following:
    • Login Name — your login name
    • Password — your password
  6. Select IMAP and click Finish.

Import your messages

Import from Thunderbird, Outlook Express, Eudora, Netscape Mail (Mozilla Suite), Thunderbird or any mailbox stored in the generic mbox format:

  1. Select Tools > Mail and chat accounts.
  2. Click "Add" and select "Import e-mail".
  3. Select which e-mail client to import from.
  4. If Opera has not located the correct folder, click "Choose" to select the folder the messages are located in.
  5. Select which account to import into; choose "new account" to import to a fresh account.
  6. Select whether to import settings, contacts, messages, or a combination.
  7. Click "Import" to start importing.

Imported messages are treated as follows:

  1. Your old folder tree is put under "Filters" in the Mail panel.
  2. Messages in your old Outbox, Sent, Drafts, and Trash folders are put in the corresponding views.
  3. All old incoming messages (from your inbox and folder tree) will appear in the Received view.
