Configure Opera Mail

Opera Mail is built into the Opera browser; all you need to get started is an email address. You can configure Opera Mail with FastMail.FM, Gmail, Yahoo, AOL or any service that supports IMAP or POP protocols.

Import messages

Import your messages from Thunderbird, Outlook Express, Eudora, Netscape Mail (Mozilla Suite), Thunderbird or any mailbox stored in the generic mbox format.

Opera Mail tutorial

To find out how to use Opera Mail to efficiently handle all your messaging needs, see the Opera Mail tutorial.

Opera Mail configuration

You can use Opera Mail with your webmail account depending on the services offered by your provider, and sometimes the type of account. Many providers only offer a web interface, but give you access to POP or IMAP for a fee, or if you upgrade your account. Some providers will only let you use their own software, such as Hotmail or Windows Live Mail, and some only offer a web interface.

To configure Opera Mail with your email service, follow the general steps below:

  1. From the menu in Opera, select Mail and Chat Accounts.
  2. If you have not yet created an account, you are prompted to create one. If you have an account, just select “Add”.
  3. Select “Email” as the type of account, then “Next”.
  4. Type the following:
    • Real name — the name to display in the From field of emails you send
    • Email address — your complete email address for your service provider
    • Organization — the name of your organization (optional)
  5. Select “Next”.
  6. Type the following:
    • Login Name — your login name for your service provider, for example, your FastMail.FM or Gmail username, Yahoo! ID name, or AOL login name
    • Password — your password
  7. Depending on the service enabled in your email account, select either “IMAP” or “POP”, then “Finish”. For example, select POP for Yahoo! Mail or IMAP for AOL Mail.

For more detailed instructions, see Create or add an account in the Opera Mail tutorial.

IMAP sent folder

To ensure that your sent IMAP messages are stored on the server and not stored locally, define your sent folder. To do this follow the steps below.

  1. From the menu in Opera, select Mail and Chat Accounts.
  2. Select your IMAP account, then “Edit”.
  3. Select the Outgoing tab.
  4. In the “IMAP sent folder” field, select the folder to store your sent messages.
  5. Click “OK”.

Additional Gmail settings

You must enable IMAP or POP before use with Opera Mail. For Gmail IMAP accounts, you must also change the following settings to synchronize with Opera Mail and avoid folder duplication:

  1. From the menu in Opera, select Mail > IMAP Folders.
  2. Under “Accounts” select your Gmail account.
  3. Uncheck the following folders:
    • [Gmail]/All Mail
    • [Gmail]/Spam
    • [Gmail]/Trash
  4. Select “OK”.

Note: The name of the folder marked above with [brackets] may have a different name, such as Google Mail.

Import your messages

You can import from Thunderbird, Outlook Express, Eudora, Netscape Mail (Mozilla Suite), Thunderbird or any mailbox stored in the generic mbox format:

  1. From the menu in Opera, select Mail and Chat Accounts.
  2. Select “Add”, and then “Import email”.
  3. Select from which email client you wish to import.
  4. If Opera has not located the correct folder, click the Choose button, and select the folder where your messages are located.
  5. Select the account to import into. To import into a new account, choose “New Account”.
  6. Select what you want to import, from settings, contacts, messages, or a combination.
  7. Click “Import” to start importing.

What happens to your imported messages?

  1. Your old folder tree is put under “Filters” in the Mail panel.
  2. Messages from your old Outbox, Sent, Drafts, and Trash folders are put in the corresponding views.
  3. All old incoming messages (from your inbox and folder tree) appear in the Received view.
