Coast by Opera
Coast is a new browser designed and optimized for the iPad. It is focused on touch gestures, instead of outdated buttons, tabs, or address bars. To catch up on the latest Coast releases, news, and events, or to read about all the stuff our team loves, take a look at our blog.
We're working to improve Coast all the time. If you have any questions about using Coast, please check out our FAQ below. If you have encountered any issues with the browser itself — aka "bugs" — please let us know by reporting them. We'll look into the problem and do our best to solve it.
Coast makes all the sites you visit into app-like tiles that you can rearrange on your home screen. Pull down the address bar to search for websites or view Google results. Recently-visited sites appear as a stack of tiles at the bottom of your home screen. To keep a site for later, drag the tile anywhere onto the grid above.
You can easily switch between recent sites. Tap on the ‘recent sites icon’ icon at the bottom-right of the screen. From there, you can swipe between sites, or tap the "i" icon for security information.
Coast protects your safety by automatically interpreting certificates, site reputations, and other indications that a page may be harmful. If a site tries to fool you, or if it tries to gain access to sensitive information, Coast will tell you. Otherwise, you can browse knowing you are fully secure.
You can personalize Coast. Drag sites onto your home screens to arrange them. The background image can be changed to anything you find on the web; simply long-press the image and set it as your background. You can even change the grid size of the home screen. Go to your iPad's settings and tap "Coast by Opera" for more options.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Why is Coast not working? I just upgraded.
There was an issue with the upgrade process that's currently being fixed. If you've recently upgraded and had problems running Coast, just delete the app and re-download it from the App Store. That way, you'll get the latest and greatest version, with our updated iOS 7 styling and bug squashing, so you don't need to worry about being out of date.
Q: Does Coast work with my iPad?
Coast works with iPad 2, 3, and 4. If you're an iPad Mini user with iOS 6 or later — you're in the club, too.
Q: Does it keep me safe online?
The developers have worked hard to keep you secure. When you try to visit a bad site, you'll see a big warning. If you're feeling paranoid, you can check details of any visited site using the "i" icon.
Q: Where are the tabs?
Unlike traditional browsers, Coast has no tabs. But, the browser does keep sites that you've recently used open and running in the background. You can switch between them by tapping on the Recent Sites icon.
Q: How do I go back a page?
Swipe the screen from left to right to go back, like a you would turn pages in a book. If you swipe back the first page you've visited, you end up back on the home screen.
Q: Can I change the background?
Find an image online that you want to set as the background and long-press on it. From there, you can set the image as your Coast background. To bring back the default image, long-press on one of the home-screen tiles until they start shaking. Then, swipe up from the page curl in the bottom left.
Q: What does the shattered tile mean?
When one of your favorite sites looks smashed, it means the site is down. Unfortunately, this also means you'll have to wait until the owner has fixed it.
Q: Why do some websites get the same icon on the home screen?
This happens because the people making the website haven’t used a proper icon. Instructions for making and grouping icons can be found in our developer resources.
Q: Will Coast be released for iPhone or Android devices?
The focus of Coast is to make a perfect experience for iPad. And, to put it plainly, we cannot comment on any future releases.
Q: Where is the history menu?
There's no menu, but you can still go back to sites you've visited. Pull down on the icon in the bottom-right of the screen to access any recently-visited site. Swipe right and left to switch between them.
Q: Is there any chance we'll be able to synchronize Coast with multiple devices?
We are always investigating new features, but we cannot comment on any future releases.
Q: Can I add a custom text label for websites?
You can add a custom label by adding the website to your home screen, using the share button in your recent-site list. Tap "Add to Home", the top-most option.
Q: I can't see the address bar. What if I want to open another site?
Press the home button. In the home screen, you can open another website by tapping a site tile or enter find a different site in the address and search bar. The site you were previously viewing is still available in your recent sites.
Q: How can I copy links?
Go to your recent sites by tapping the icon in the lower right of the screen. Tap the "i" icon to see more details about the page. Then, tap the site's URL and select copy.
Q: Does Coast save my passwords?
Yes, Coast automatically saves passwords. You can choose to prevent Coast from saving passwords by toggling the Remember Password slider in your iPad's settings under Coast.
Q: How many pages can I have in open in my recent sites?
Seven. A site will continue to run as long as you don't swipe it up to close it. For example, you can still hear tracks playing on SoundCloud while you're reading articles on Digg. But, if the memory of your iPad is low, some sites will automatically pause to conserve space for you.
Q: How many icons can I have in the home screen?
You can have as many as you want. Sites are arranged in pages of 3 x 3 grids by default on the home screen (you can change this to 3 x 4 in your iPad's settings under Coast). You can have as many home screen pages as you want.
