User agent string/id formats

Opera user agent string/id formats are described with string order and examples.

Opera user agent string/id references:

User agent string/id items in descending order

Opera versions will use all or some parts of the following user agent string/id items. The following definitions are based on the Opera 10.x series user agent string/id format. Examples of the different types of Opera user agent string/id formats are shown following these definitions.

Browser signature: Opera/9.80
Signifies the name of the browser followed by a single digit prefix version number (9) which is used for compatibility purposes.
  • Most browser sniffing scripts are not ready for this change to double digits (Opera "10"), as they detect only the first digit of the user agent string meaning Opera "10" is interpreted as Opera "1" (note that the real version number is provided at the end of the UA string in the examples shown below). This results in sites mistakenly identifying Opera 10 as an unsupported browser thereby breaking server and client-side scripts.
Operating system signature
Identifies the name and version number of an operating system (FreeBSD, Linux, Mac, Solaris, or Windows).
  • FreeBSD
    • X11; FreeBSD (version no.) i386
    • X11; FreeBSD (version no.) AMD64
  • Linux
    • X11; Linux ppc
    • X11; Linux ppc64
    • X11; Linux i686
    • X11; Linux x86_64
  • Mac
    • Macintosh; PPC Mac OS X
    • Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X
  • Solaris
    • X11; SunOS i86pc
    • X11; SunOS sun4u
  • Windows:
    • Windows NT 6.1
    • Windows NT 6.0
    • Windows NT 5.2
    • Windows NT 5.1
    • Windows ME
    • Windows 98
Security encryption level signature
Based on the former security encryption levels set by the Unted States government:
  • N: Signifies no security encryption.
  • I: Signifies weak security encryption; formerly meaning "I"nternational weak encryption for which the U.S. government will grant an export license.
  • U: Signifies strong security encryption; formerly meaning "U".S. government high-quality encryption that generally cannot be exported from the United States.
ISO signature (human language tag)
Indicates the human language for which the client (browser) is localized.
Rendering engine/number
This is the Opera rendering engine name and its version number.
Version/number
This indentifies the real version number of this version of Opera.
Example: Opera 10.x versions user agent string/id
Opera/9.80 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X; U; en) Presto/2.2.15 Version/10.10
Example: Opera 9.60 thru 9.64 versions user agent string/id
Opera/9.64 (Windows NT 5.1; U; en) Presto/2.1.1
Example: Early versions of Opera thru the 9.52 version user agent string/id
Opera/9.50 (X11; Linux x86_64; U; pl)

Opera 7 series

Historical note
Opera 7.01 "Bork" version: Microsoft's MSN portal targeted Opera users by purposely providing them with a broken page. As a reply to MSN's treatment of its users, Opera Software released a very special Bork version of its Opera 7 for Windows browser. The Bork version behaves differently on one Web site: MSN. Users accessing the MSN site will see the page transformed into the language of the famous Swedish Chef from the Muppet Show: Bork, Bork, Bork! Further information regarding the Opera 7.01 "Bork" version is available from our press release.

Opera 6 series

Historical note
Elektra was originally used as a codename for the 4.0 release, but was later used to refer to the rendering capabilities (the "engine") from version 3.5 through version 6. The Opera 7 series and those that followed began the labeling of the rendering engine, in this case "Presto".
