Opera in your computer lab

Choice is important. Including the Opera browser on your campus helps promote Web standards, foster innovation and ensure the Web remains open and accessible to all.

Your students will always have email, research and university resources at their fingertips. If you are interested in Opera Connected Campus, simply email education[at]opera.com to receive all the resources you need.

The Opera desktop browser is completely free. It works on Windows, Mac, and Linux platforms and has many features valuable for schools and universities. Already more than 40 million people choose to call Opera their own, every day.

Auto-update

Versions of the browser from Opera 10 onward make it easier than ever to stay up-to-date with the latest version. With auto-update you can choose to have completely automatic updates or to be notified when a new release is available, and you can update Opera across your entire lab at once.

Rendering

The Opera browser renders Web pages quickly and consistently. The browser has stringent support for the latest Web standards, including CSS, SVG, and XHTML, as well as some support for CSS3 and HTML5—so you can be sure Web pages will work in Opera.

Capacity

The high volume of users in a computer lab increases the need to keep the network working quickly and consistently. Opera has adaptive memory management, meaning that not only will your computers be less sluggish, but also that the Opera browser is perfect for older computers with fewer available system resources.

Security

When you have dozens or hundreds of computers networked, it is important to ensure users feel safe on your computers, and that viruses are not able to penetrate and spread through your system.

Opera Software prides itself on its reputation for security.

  • Opera automatically blocks phishing sites and sites distribution malware, to keep personal information secure.
  • Our privacy and security features include automatic 256-bit encryption (the highest available security of any Web browser), excellent support for security protocols, cookie control, fraud protection plus a security bar that gives added assurance about the security of a particular Web site.
  • The Opera browser can also be configured to clear the history and cache when exiting, to delete private data and protect privacy for all students.
  • The Opera browser is vigilant when it comes to your security. We consistently have the fewest security vulnerabilities and we patch any vulnerability quickly. (Check out the vulnerability reports for Opera from security firm Secunia.)

Disabling BitTorrent

Opera also has built-in support for BitTorrent, though if you prefer not to allow P2P activity in your computer lab the BitTorrent client in Opera can easily be disabled. System administrators can apply this policy to all users by following our quick and easy guide to editing the system fixed file.

Websites at your fingertips

Via the Speed Dial function, the Opera browser enables computer lab system administrators to pre-set shortcuts to 4-25 Web pages each time users open a new tab. That way, users have key university services at their fingertips—such as the IT help page, library, student services office, contact directory, and student profiles.

Pop-up and content blocking

The Opera browser allows you to selectively block images, pop-ups, and plug-ins. In Opera, smart pop-up blocking is turned on by default, and Web page images can be temporarily blocked for faster loading.

Testing

It is vital for students of information technology and multimedia to have access to all key browsers for fully testing the look and functionality of Web sites and other Web programs. Opera Dragonfly, Opera’s developer tools, makes developing using Opera easier than ever, both on your computer and mobile phone.

Kiosk mode

If your campus features unattended computers in public places, the Opera browser enables them to run in Kiosk Mode. Kiosk Mode lets users browse for necessary information, but denies access to the computer and browser settings. After a period of inactivity, the browser resets and returns to a specified home page.

Mobile browsing

If your students are limited by low computer or Internet access outside school, or simply wish to be connected all the time, you can encourage students to use the Opera browser on their mobile phone. Opera Mobile is available for Symbian S60 and Windows Mobile handsets. Opera Mini is available for nearly every standard mobile phone. Opera Mini uses a server to pre-process and compress Web sites before sending them to your mobile phone, so that mobile phones can surf faster than with a dial-up Internet connection on a PC.

Synchronized browsing with Opera Link

Students can use Opera Link to synchronize their bookmarks and Speed Dial between multiple computers at home, school/university and work, and even Opera Mini. With Opera Link students never have to leave their browser information behind—they can bookmark that fantastic article at school and still have access to it at home.

Features that students will love

The Opera browser includes several features that assist both students and academic staff with their research:

  • Highlight any text with the Notes function. The note acts as a smart bookmark, saving both the text of interest and Web page address for easy later retrieval—no more forgetting where you found that vital fact for your research!
  • The tabbed browsing in Opera allows you to open links in the background without disrupting your browsing in the current tab.
  • When using a search engine, you can use the Fast Forward button to make Opera automatically go to the next page in the search result listings to speed up your research.
