Navigating in Opera Mail

This topic introduces you to the Opera Mail layout and explains how to navigate it and how to use Mail views.

Opera Mail layout

When you open Opera Mail, you can see from the far left:

  • a panel selector.
  • the Mail panel - toggle the panel using F4.
  • a split-pane Mail window on the right. The top pane contains the name of the active view, the Mail toolbar, and lists the messages in the current view. The bottom pane shows the selected message body and the Quick Reply field, if displayed.

Use the Mail panel and views

The Mail panel is the key to using Opera Mail. It gives you easy access to all your mail and news, and allows you to quickly check and send mail or compose a new message. It also periodically flashes a message at the bottom, to indicate the status of the server, for example, when it automatically checks for messages. Click the Mail icon on the panel selector, or press F4 to toggle the Mail panel.

The Mail panel displays a set of default views to help you access your messages more efficiently. It's important to understand how Opera Mail uses views as opposed to the more traditional folders you may be familiar with. Opera Mail stores all your e-mails in one central location but automatically organizes how they are displayed for you using a range of "views". Views are like tags, or search results based on certain search criteria. Opera Mail's default views automatically display e-mails of a similar type, such as e-mails:

  • that have not been read yet
  • with attachments
  • from mailing lists

Often this means that one e-mail is displayed in a number of views without being copied or moved, if it matches different criteria. For example, a message that have not read yet that also has a document attached to it, appears under the Unread, Received, and Attachments views.

Default views

Default views are organized into groups under view headers and are listed in the table below with descriptions. If a view has unread messages, the header appears in bold with the number of unread messages shown in brackets next to it. Some headers or views may not display, depending on the types of messages you have sent or received - see Default views that display when needed below.

Header View Shows...
Unread New, unread messages until marked as read. Once marked as read, they no longer display in this view. If considered spam they also show in the Spam view. Newsgroup messages are not shown here by default.
All messages All messages, in a view listed under this header. This isn't really the best place to access your messages. It's more efficient and powerful to view messages under Unread, Labels, Active contacts or Mailing list views. If you remove a message from any views under this header, it is removed from all views.
Received All received messages. This view is the central location for storing all received messages. When messages display in another view, they are essentially reflected from here.
Outbox Queued messages waiting to be sent, temporarily, until sent.
Sent Sent messages. From this view, you can resend messages and cancel newsgroup postings.
Drafts Unsent messages. A draft is saved automatically while you are writing a message and moves to Sent once you send it. See Message drafts for more details.
Spam Messages identified as junk mail. The filter learns from the messages you add and remove from the view. See Handle spam for more details.
Trash (or Deleted) Messages that have been deleted from views or filters. See Delete messages for more details.

Default views that display when needed

These views only display when there are active messages of the corresponding type.

Header Shows... Notes
Filters Custom filters that you create. See Use filters to sort messages for more details
Followed contacts Contacts you have chosen to follow. Displays only if you have chosen to follow a particular contact. Click on a contact to display messages from them. These messages can be displayed in threaded view. See Follow or ignore messages from contacts for more details.
Followed threads Message discussion threads you have chosen to follow. Displays only if you have chosen to follow a particular thread. Click on a thread to display all messages in that thread. See Viewing and managing threads for more details.
Labels Messages you give a label to. You can add a label to an e-mail to further categorize your messages. The message then displays in the view for that label. Default labels are:
  • Important icon Important
  • To do icon Todo
  • Mail back icon Mail back
  • Call back icon Call back
  • Meeting icon Meeting
  • Funny icon Funny
  • Valuable icon Valuable
To label a message, select it and either right-click and select a label from the drop-down, or click the Label button on the Mail toolbar and select from the drop-down.
Searches Terms you have searched for using Start search. Any search using Start search is automatically saved in this view and remains until it is deleted (either right-click and select Delete or select the search and press Delete). You can re-use the searches in this view for searching new, incoming messages.
Attachments Messages with attachments. Attachment categories are:
  • Document icon Documents
  • Image icon Images
  • Music icon Music
  • Video icon Video
  • Archive icon Archives
Mailing lists Messages from mailing lists, under individual views. Mailing lists you are subscribed to are automatically recognized by Opera Mail, as long as the subject header contains an one of the following: X-Mailing-List, List-ID, List-Post, or Mailing-list in combination with Delivered-to.
Newsfeeds RSS or Atom newsfeeds you have subscribed to, under individual views. See Newsfeeds for more details.

IMAP folders

Opera does not automatically honor folder subscriptions. To display IMAP folders:

  • Choose Mail > IMAP folders to open the IMAP folders dialog. Your IMAP folders automatically appear in the Mail panel under the IMAP header.
  • To locate a specific folder in the subscription dialog quickly, use Quick find.
  • To change the account you are viewing folders for, use the account drop-down.
  • Click New account to create a new account.
  • To toggle the subscription status, click the folder name.

The folders are added to views under the IMAP account header in the Mail panel, and messages are retrieved during the next check for new messages. Opera Mail displays a separate header at the bottom of the Mail panel for your IMAP account. Your IMAP inbox folder is displayed under this header, and all incoming message headers from your account will be downloaded to it. As with all accounts, your messages also display in default views, such as Unread, Received, Sent and Spam.

Trash Can

The Trash Can in the Tab bar above the Mail window allows you to undo actions when you've made a mistake. For Opera Mail, use the Trash Can to undo actions such as:

  • marking as read
  • removing messages from a view or filter
  • marking as spam

To use the Trash Can to undo an action, click the Trash Can icon Trash icon and select the action or message from the list. This reverses the action or reinstates a removed message. You can also press Ctrl+Z.
