Managing contacts

Follow or ignore messages from contacts

If you want to be alerted to messages from a specific person, you can follow messages from them. This displays all messages from that person under the Followed Contacts header in the Mail panel. When new messages are received, this header becomes bold and the number of unread messages is shown. The person must be added as a contact for this option to appear.

  • To follow messages from a contact, view a message from them, right-click on their email address and select Follow contact.
  • To stop following emails from this person, you can either:
    • view a message from them, right-click their email address and select Follow contact to uncheck this option, or
    • right-click their name under the Followed Contacts header in the Mail panel and select Delete.
Messages from this person still display in the Unread and Received views.

You can also ignore all messages from someone. Messages from this contact do not display in the Unread view. They still display in the Received view but are marked automatically as read. The person must already be a contact for this option to appear.

  • To ignore messages from a contact, view an email from them, right-click their email address and select Ignore contact.
  • To stop ignoring these messages, view a message from them, right-click their email address and select Ignore contact to uncheck this option.

You can also choose to follow or ignore messages from a contact in the Contacts panel. See Follow or ignore messages in the Contacts panel below.

Use the Contacts panel

The Contacts panel displays when you create a mail, chat, or newsgroup account. Click Contacts in the panel selector. You can toggle the panel by pressing F4. To list all your correspondence with a particular contact, click a contact listed in the Contacts panel.

The Contacts panel allows you to:

  • keep track of all sorts of information about people you communicate with.
  • group messages you have received from contact or groups of contacts together.
  • follow or ignore messages from contacts.
  • send messages to groups of addresses easily.

Change contact properties

You can add, remove, and change information about contacts. To do this, right-click on a contact and select Properties. Use the tabs to record different types of information. The table below lists the tabs and describes what you can change. Tip: You can leave any field in any tab blank, but if you leave Name and E-mail address blank, it limits the usefulness of contacts.

Tab Option Used to...
General [Picture] displays an image specified in the Picture URL field of the "Images" tab.
General E-mail address record the primary e-mail address. You can add additional e-mail addresses on the Notes tab.
General Home page record a home page URL, if your contact has one.
Home All record personal contact details, such as postal addres, phone and fax number.
Notes Additional e-mail addresses record additional e-mail addresses. Separate addresses with commas, like this: "username1@example.com, username2@example.com, username3@example.com". E-mail messages sent to and received from the addresses listed here appear in the view associated with this contact together with messages from and to the contact's primary e-mail address.
Notes Notes record any notes you may want to keep about the contact.
Chat Nickname record your contact's IRC nickname to let Opera keep track of the contact's on-line status for Chat. Contacts with registered nicknames will show up in your chat panel when you and your contact are logged on to the same network.
Images Picture URL enter the Web page address of an image you want to associate with your contact. This picture also displays at the top of Contact views for the contact. The maximum image size is 150 x 150 pixels. It is better to use photos from the Web by specifying a URL. There may be problems uploading photos from your computer, as they must then be cached to display.
Images Icon display an icon in the message list for messages received. The default is the first contact icon in the list. To change the icon, select a new icon from the list.
