Today, we’re starting to roll out an upgrade of Opera for Android to our beta channel. We’re doing this gradually, so it might take a little while before you see it on your device.

A brand new UI

The first thing you’ll notice is the UI overhaul: we’ve rebuilt the main browser interface completely, while the settings section has gotten a lick of paint as well.

The red O in the bottom right corner is gone, as is the plus sign next to the address bar, and you’ll find its combined options under the three-dots menu in the top-right corner. Also new is what we call a “user center”, which you can reach by tapping on the person icon in the bottom right corner: you’ll find there sign-in options, a reading list (which is an incarnation of our “saved pages” functionality), bookmarks, history and downloads.

We’ve also given the “share” function a more central place in the UI, so that it’s easier for you to share favorite pages to Twitter, WhatsApp or other applications.Image of Opera browser for Android beta

News in the US and Indonesia

In the US and Indonesia, the start page looks a little different: Speed Dial is still there as a panel on the left, but in the center, there is a news feed powered by a totally overhauled Discover engine. It allows you to read the latest news right when you start the browser, and you can easily dive in and start exploring.

The news feed has various customization and subscription options — you can connect your Twitter account, or pick your favorite channels, for instance — and there is even a new reader mode which offers a really clean reading experience. You can also configure in Settings if you want to use the news feed or rather stick to Speed Dial as your default start page.

We expect this feature to be rolled out to more countries and languages in the near future as well, so stay tuned for more news.

Under the hood

This release does not come with a Chromium upgrade, but it’s something we’ll be working on in the near future: that’s why we’re calling it version 37.1, in case you’re wondering.

We did find the time though to do a number of bug fixes to the “add to home screen” feature (progressive web apps): view mode media queries are now properly supported, and the notification area picks up the theme color from the manifest.

Additionally, intent:// URLs, which can be used to jump from webpages to native apps, are now supported as well.

I have SM Galaxy Tab 3. There’s Chrome there of course which I don’t like so much. So I have Opera Mini as alternate browser – and I was thinking of ditching Chrome all together – but I checked RAM consumption: Both browsers had 4 tabs open: Chrome 2MB | Opera: 28MB.

How can the figures be like this? I most certainly expected it to be another way around!

    • zlauder

Hmm, that sounds strange, as it’s not possible to keep 4 tabs open in Chromium using 2MB RAM. We would expect Opera Mini to use the same or less amount of RAM compared to Chrome. Get in touch with us on social-networks@opera.com and let us know how you measured it, and we’ll see what we figure out! /Zara

      • A. R.

I used Androids own app/feature found in at least 4.4 – I pressed the home button and then the app switcher appears, on lower left side of the screen is a button for a list of usage of ram & cpu of running apps…

  • Leonardo Gomes

It’s an interesting new UI design.

    • zlauder

Glad you’re liking it! Let us know if you have more feedback as you play around with it.

  • ouzowtf

    – opening a tinyurl.com-URL (still) takes 10-30 seconds to dissolve the real URL and open the page
    – the favicons in the reading list are too big
    – the reading list misses a scroll bar
    – in general a scroll handle in scroll bars would be nice
    – line spacing in bookmarks and history are too big
    – there should be a _native_ refresh spinner
    – I think the icons at the bottom should be more “Android native”

    • zlauder

Wow, thank you for taking the time to share all your feedback, and for testing it out so well. Those are really handy inputs, and we’ll make sure the product team sees them. Thanks for the list, makes it nice and clear!

  • xirit64

What has happened to my main post? Anyway my opinion and critique:
    https://forums.opera.com/discussion/comment/15248040#Comment_15248040

    • Ruth_opera

Thanks for the detailed feedback! Making sure the link gets to the right people now so they see it.

Which main post do you mean? Did you post something else to this blog? Cheers again

      • xirit64

I posted the contents of that link 4-5 hours ago with the notation that i do it because different people seem to be participating here and there. Now that I’ve checked the disqus profile it says it was detected as spam…
        Oh well, cheers!

  • Artem

IMHO, address bar should have smaller padding. At minimum 5px of useless gray space on the top of the page.

    • zlauder

Hi Artem. The new search bar is indeed thicker than previous one, and we’ll look at different options for this. Thanks for the feedback!

  • xirit64

Bug to report: Can’t drag & edit a thumbnail that locates inside a SD folder.

    • zlauder

Hi! Just talked to one of our browser gurus, and heard that what you have to do for now is drag the item out of folder, and then drop it and drag it to edit. Hope that helps!

      • xirit64

Hi zlauder and thanks for the response. I’ve done that the first time I noticed it but that is not the point, you mean this is going to be the normal way (regression) from now on or do you acknowledge the bug and you mention it only as a temporary workaround? Thanks.

  • MarkG54321

Password sync yet? Seriously the device I want to not have to type passwords into, is the device opera forces me to type passwords into.

Chrome just works, desktop and android. Opera has been making a total balls up of sync forever.

To make things even more painful for users, you have separate APK for release and beta, whilst everyone else on the planet does it the proper Google play beta sign up way. No way to transfer data between release and beta. (Using google play beta testing, you use the same packages for release and beta, but the user account control what you get)

It’s as if you somehow hate users and don’t want to build a userbase

    • cicciazzo

      yes! password sync please!

      • zlauder

Thanks for your replies! I checked in with the team and password sync is indeed not available for mobile at the moment (though you can sync passwords between your desktop browsers). We’re looking into it but other priorities jumped in first, but I’ll give the team a poke that it’s very much in demand. 🙂

        • myxelloss

This has been on demand since so loong time ago that we are just sick of wait for it. Really can’t understand why there is so much difference of quality between your desktop and mobile browser D:

But yes, please consider adding it at last. Probably you’re the only browser with sync that does not offer possibility to exchange information between desktop/mobile devices. Which is actually weird.

  • Steve Belden

It’s interesting, and I’m sure I’ll come to like it/get used to it over time. The one thing that’s annoying right now is the lack of a layout switcher. Really miss the ability to put the controls at the top and free up more space on the screen. Please fix! And thanks for the lovely browser – Opera is awesome in so many ways 🙂

    • zlauder

Naaawww, and feeling lovely to get that feedback that our browser is awesome. Good input on the layout switcher! Thanks for testing out the new beta and taking time to send across your opinions. 🙂

  • ouzowtf

    Some more feedback:

    – I don’t understand what the copy and search option in the settings does
    – the search box on startpage.com can’t be added to the search engines
    – the search engines should be able to be deleted (default ones) and moved vertically
    – I would like to have gestures to open a new and close the current tab
    – the tab menu (reopen closed tab, close all tabs) still has the old style
    – I don’t like the visual search suggestion page icons, they use too much space (5,5″ phone here! but keyboard is of course open) and show pages I don’t know and never ever opened in my life

    • zlauder

Even more solid gold inputs! Thanks again for listing out your feedback so clearly – passing on those points, too.

  • Leonardo Gomes

I guess its called ‘Save to reading list’ now.

    • zlauder

Right you are, Leonardo! All pages added to the reading list should be stored offline.

  • ShintoPlasm

It is currently impossible to log in onto my Opera account via Opera for Android (both Stable and Beta). It says “Temporary server error. Please try again later.”

EDIT: I am getting a similar error on Opera Mini for iOS: “Connection Error. Cannot sync data. Try again later.”

    • agitai

I have no problem with that, looks like temporary internet disconnection/timeout

      • ShintoPlasm

Maybe you get connected to a different server? I’m connecting from the UK and still have this problem.

        • agitai

maybe, I don’t know what server i’m connected to, but both beta and stable are synced without a problem.

          • Obiektywny

I’d like install the beta version but i didn’t find it in the AppStore..
edit: When I wrote this comment finally I was able to log on my iphone. Miracle! 🙂

        • zlauder

Are you still having the problem, or was it indeed only a temporary timeout?

          • ShintoPlasm

Still the same problem, as described on both operating systems… 🙁

          • zlauder

The team is looking into it now.

          • Obiektywny

I have the same problem on iOS and Android. I can’t log in or create new account. Message on iOS: http://prntscr.com/c9idm1

          • ShintoPlasm

I have just managed to log into my account on iOS.

  • agitai

not sure what are the differences between Opera for android, opera mini and opera max. is there a comparison chart somewhere?

    • ShintoPlasm

Opera for Android: “standard” browser similar to mobile Chrome, with a fair amount of settings to play around with. Although it includes a data saving option, this isn’t generally seen as a centrepiece feature. Essentially, this is the companion browser to Opera for desktop.

Opera Mini: a smaller version of Opera for Android using (I think) a different browser engine). It is more optimised to be used in data saving mode, which can be configured more extensively than the regular Android version. Currently seems to be the version the Opera team is focusing more on…

Opera Max: not a browser, but a data saving app which functions as a kind of VPN on your device. This allows you to connect to Opera’s servers (similar to the data saving ‘Turbo’ mode in the Opera browsers) but covers your entire device rather than just your browser. Can also block ads – although this is also a feature of the data saving option in the two Opera browsers.

      • agitai

Thanks for the info! is max working smoothly? sounds like an app i’d like to use.

        • xirit64

Yes plus it works like a light firewall too.

          • agitai

Great! Installed. already found some apps trafficking data while they shouldn’t.

          • agitai

Actually, after testing it for a while, i’m experiencing frequent disconnections with MAX…:( as soon as i disconnect it, no problem.

          • zlauder

Thanks, everyone, for replying to each other! I’ll check with the Max team about that issue.

          • agitai

I found the reason for the disconnections: Power saving. Once I excluded Max from this, No problem! (max remains active during standby mode)

          • zlauder

            Awesome, problem solved!

  • Artem

    https://1drv.ms/i/s!AiFjijoj3ZNIn5lYrG3idyDsY499Kw

Also I don’t like icon of the share button. It’s very similar to full screen, so after you have rolled the new design out, I searched the share button about 1 minute. I think you should have also this button in dropdown menu from the right side

    • zlauder

Took a look again at the UI and I see what you mean. Passing that input on to the product team!

  • MarkG54321

Not liking the random icons that cover the URL bar. Makes it basically unusable. No way to see URL bar, no way to paste URL, icons I don’t even want. Browser spam basically

    • zlauder

Thanks for those inputs, Mark. Sorry to hear it’s making parts of the browser tricky! Poking the development team on that feedback.

  • Женя Т…

    Horrible.
    – I can’t change design to tablet mode.
    – Big useless red header. I don’t see half of my thumbnails. If I swipe at bottom I lose address bar.
    – Useless share button. Who use it so often?
    – If I press “3 dots button” I can’t press it again to close menu.
    – Where forward button?

    Sorry for my english.

    • zlauder

Ouch, sorry to hear you’re not a fan so far. We’ll definitely pass on those feedback inputs to the team.

    • Agree except the share button. I used it a lot to save articles in Evernote.

  • finerfeelings78

Please, bring back the previous UI…

    • zlauder

Noted that you’re a fan of the previous version, and letting the team know.

  • Srivatsan Sridhar

Can’t find option to import speed Speed Dial from old phone. It was a nice feature since I switch phones often.

    • xirit64

This beta is pretty rough at the moment. I’d suppose you can do it the moment they ‘ll enable synchronization.

    • zlauder

Hi Srivatsan! You should be able to bring in your Speed Dials through Opera’s sync feature, though it doesn’t result in your Speed Dial looking exactly the same as a previous version, which can be a little confusing. If you’re logged into your Opera account and you’re still not seeing your Speed Dials as an option, it could be a temporary server issue you’re experiencing.

  • myxelloss

Well… The UI needed a new fresh style to at least match Material Design guidelines. But… :

    – Does the red thing on start page have any use but to consume screen space?
    – Why the buttons at the bottom do not hide when browsing? Screen is very important on mobile devices to waste it like this!
    – So many options in the menu that could be replaced with minimalistic icon buttons instead of making a really huge menu that you really don’t use so much. Probably the option of the previous interface with the “+” button on the direction bar was more clear.
    – Sharing, reload, forward and back buttons should be inside the “3-dotted button”, at the top of the menu.
    – Tab switch button should be aside the direction bar instead of the bottom… it’s like a convention in all browsers except this.
    – You made this “user” menu where you can locate your history, bookmarks and so on. Why don’t you place it alongside the speed dial just like in the previous version? Is much more easy to get there.

Summarizing… probably just to change a few things of the previous interface to match Material Design guidelines should be for the best, instead of changing the whole interface to make it uncomfortable for most users.

Anyway, thanks for letting us express our opinions 🙂

    • zlauder

And thanks for expressing those opinions! That’s really detailed feedback and we definitely appreciate you taking the time to write that all up for us. Great to get your inputs, and we’ll make sure the development team gets them.

  • Haskell Java

just downloaded the new Opera Beta.. personally I like it new UI, but would be better if u guys put layout options like previous one..and full screen option. 😉

  • nshr

Where can I get this one?
Still unavailable for me in Google Play.

  • T0ASTERvan

For me, the whole point is using your browser is to avoid “treads”, “feed” etc.. I’ve just test your beta version and don’t like it. Why because I do no wish to see what treading nor to I want to see any feeds.. Keep it simple, Keep it real.

I’m assuming that when this beta goes live, it will update my current version of open browser for my android.. and if by chance I’m not allowed to block all the treading and feed crap.. it would appear that I’ll have to search for a new browser..

    • Ruth_opera

Appreciate the feedback 🙂 and also that people have different preferences which is why we are including an option to turn off the news feed for those that don’t want it

      • North American Roads

So does this mean that you’r going to keep it simple and allow users to flip a switch and turn off all of this madness?.. I like not knowing what’s treading or going on in the world.. call me hermit I suppose. But when give a chance to escape, I do so while exploring the Internet where as I do not wish to see the madness. So let me choose what I want to see or let em simply turn it off.. sort of like give me liberty or give me death.. just not while watching or wading through some treading topics..

  • Nico

I just got the update today and while I appreciate the general new look of Opera for Android, I really miss more options for personalization, like the aforementioned layout options.

Also, why can’t I delete the “Feed” tab from Speed Dial itselfl? And while we’re at it: The plus button on the header of Speed Dial is misleading (the one next to “Speed Dial” and “Feed”) and it should be a cog instead. Why? Because not only can you add new tabs from there, you can also edit your existing tabs (minus “Feed”, which is annoying for me).

To be clear: I know that I can disable the “Feed” from Opera’s Settings, but why can’t I also disable it from the plus button? Because that’s where I would expect it.

One more thing: The Sync entry on SD itself looks like a refresh button and therefore, is also misleading in my opinion.

  • Irontiger

    Hi,

thanks for the update. I think I could get used to the new interface, but only if there will be an option to not focus address bar on new tab. I want to see my speed dial directly… It’s extremely annoying this way… 🙁

    Greetings

    IT

  • SimonPieman

More UI madness. So many clicks to get to speed dial. Even a click to close it down (page opens behind it). Whoever is responsible for this mess should not be doing UI design.

Random tabs, some you can close, some you can’t, drives me bonkers

  • jimt1029

On phones, the three dots menu doesn’t stand out enough in the upper right. On mobile websites, three dots or hamburger menus are often in the same upper right position, often with a similar color scheme. The Opera three dot menu blends in too much. I preferred the “O” with the little down triangle for the menu. It stood out more to me, so I wouldn’t accidentally click on a website menu vs the Opera menu.

As others have indicated, I would also like to choose the mode (tablet, phone, etc) like in the old version. I like to use the phone layout on my small tablet.

Finally, this is minor, but I liked the old data savings stats more. I appreciated seeing the total saved vs total sent w/percentage in data savings.

  • Nikita

Where Win10M version? I can’t wait, guys, please, tell me something. )

    • Leonardo Gomes

Latest news, a few months ago, was that development for Windows Mobile had been put on hold.
I don’t remember have seen anything about they being back to it.

  • kapsi

    – I like the new UI, but I’d rather have password sync.
    – Please merge Opera Mini and Opera Normal into one.
    – Reader mode – I hope you will make it available for desktop Opera and for all pages in O mobile

    • cicciazzo

      +1 for password sync

  • Irontiger

    Hi,

please give us an option to alwasy use the “thin” version of the address bar… that big one with the red background is just ugly and unnecessary…
I’m missing a “forward” button next to the “backward” button… 🙁

    Greetings

    IT

    • xirit64

Yep that scroll up extra movement is totally unnecessary and unproductive.

  • Jaiba Mon

Thank you, THANK YOU, for finally allowing me to set the default search provider.

And now that you’re at it, get some inspiration from Chrome and UC Browser and make it easy to switch tabs by sliding the address bar.

  • Irontiger

    Hi,

the new version with the forward button in button bar has a reload button on the speeddial page with no functionality. Why? Is this a bug? Please replace it with the forward button as well.

    Greetings

    IT
