Today, Opera 44 lands in the beta channel with Touch Bar UI for Mac users, as well as credentials and security improvements.

Touch Bar UI for Mac users

Since the Touch Bar recently appeared on MacBook Pros, it generated a lot of interest, and not only among Mac users. We believe it’s an interesting improvement for the user experience that can bring advanced users many more browsing options, especially while working in fullscreen.

Opera 44 is the first browser besides Safari to introduce support for the Touch Bar. We use it for some common actions such as going back, focusing the address field, and navigating through Speed Dials and tabs. Unlike Safari, Opera displays icons and colors of tabs instead of their screenshots in the Touch Bar, which gives users a better overview of their tabs.

Credential Management API

Opera now supports the Credential Management API, giving users a simpler sign-in process across devices and provides websites with more control over the usage of credentials. The website can use password-based sign-ins via this API. Once logged in, users will be automatically signed back into a site, even if their session has expired. Watch how it works here.

    Great

  • Clasan Ibanez

In my Debian Jessie x64 is running very well. It’s consuming less memory too (+-30MB).
    Great job, guys. Tks!

  • L33t4opera

Hi Grzegorz, thanks for the update, and congrats on the first Opera beta 44 😉

    New flags:
    – opera:flags#show-overdraw-feedback
Visualize overdraw by color-coding elements based on if they have other elements drawn underneath.

    – opera:flags#ui-disable-partial-swap
    Sets partial swap behavior.

    – opera:flags#enable-http-form-warning
Attach a warning UI to any password or credit card fields detected when the top-level page is not HTTPS.

    – opera:flags#enable-webvr
Enabling this option allows web applications to access experimental Virtual Reality APIs.

    – opera:flags#print-pdf-as-image
If enabled, an option to print PDF files as images will be available in print preview.

    – opera:flags#enable-faster-location-reload
Enable faster location.reload() to use a reload mode that revalidates only main resource forcibly.

    – opera:flags#cross-origin-media-playback-requires-user-gesture
Playing media elements in cross-origin iframes requires user gesture. Disabling this will allow autoplay in cross-origin iframes to work.

    – opera:flags#enable-slimming-paint-invalidation
Whether to enable a new paint invalidation system.

    – opera:flags#disable-background-video-track
Disable video tracks when the video is played in the background to optimize performance.

    – opera:flags#media-remoting
When Casting a tab to a remote device, enabling this turns on an optimization that forwards the content bitstream directly to the remote device when a video is fullscreened.

    – opera:flags#media-remoting-encrypted
When Media Remoting is enabled, this flag must be enabled to allow the remoting of encrypted content. When disabled, only non-encrypted content can be remoted.

    – opera:flags#enable-nostate-prefetch
"No-State Prefetch" pre-downloads resources to improve load times. "Prerender" does a full pre-rendering of the page, to improve load times even more. "Simple Load" does nothing and is similar to disabling the feature, but collects more metrics for comparison purposes.

    – opera:flags#more-share-menu-access-points (Mac)
Enables sharing in macOS via the main menu and the selection popup.

    – opera:flags#enable-webrtc-hw-h264-encoding
Support in WebRTC for encoding h264 video streams using platform hardware.

    – opera:flags#credential-management-api
    Enables the Credential Management API.

    – opera:flags#quit-when-profile-broken
Don't continue running if profile problems are detected.

    • Ralf Brinkmann

      | – opera:flags#enable-http-form-warning

Which one is the standard setting? Must we do anything or is it enabled by Opera?

      • Leonardo Gomes

This is the problem with Chromium flags, we never know if it’s enabled or not.
They should so like Opera and make it easily seen.

      • L33t4opera

Hi Ralf, it seems to be not implemented yet, or doesn’t work in this build, however you can open the Developer Tools Console (Ctrl+Shift+J), and you should see a warning like this: “This page includes a password or credit card input in a non-secure context”. You can see it for example on this website.

  • Junaid Ahmed

    Bug:-
Go to Bookmarks(which now takes you to the “My Folders” by default:-@), now delete a folder. Then try to recover the folder from Trash; either by right clicking and selectig “undo delete” option or by simply clicking “undo delete” button at the right of the bookmark. It won’t work. Doesn’t happen with single bookmarks, it only happens with folders(doesn’t matter if the folder is empty or full).
    Windows 10, 32 bit, build 1607
    Opera beta 44.0.2510.73

    • L33t4opera

Hi Junaid, I can confirm this issue. As a workaround, you can simply drag and drop it in the original location.

      • Junaid Ahmed

Thanks for confirmation. Yeah, that’s what I ‘m doing now.

        • Radek Rzepecki

yep, that’s a bug. Thanks for letting us know. We will fix it soon 🙂

  • escruting

Why cant we bookmark a page directly to the “Unsorted Bookmarks” section since this version? This is a huge step back. The purpose of unsorted bookmarks was that you clicked the heart and “forgot” about it. Now the My Folders section will be a mess.

    • Leonardo Gomes

‘Unsorted Bookmarks’ no longer exist. Or is being removed at least.

      • escruting

Removed or replaced with something similar? in which blog post did this appear?

        • Leonardo Gomes

Removed as far as I know.

Not sure if it was mentioned in a blog post but it was in some comments for sure.

          • Radek Rzepecki

Unsorted bookmarks are removed only if there is nothing inside, then you’ll be using My bookmarks as your default folder.

          • Junaid Ahmed

            Individual opinion:
I don’t wanna see folders in the main page area in My bookmark folder. They’re(these folders) already in the left panel! Whats the point in mixing them with unorganized bookmarks? There’ll always be many unorganized bookmarks, it’ll take 20 folders to organize my bookmarks which will be then hard to find(Will there be any way to see all bookmark at once? Sometimes I just visit them just to find out what to do next:). Mixing folders with these unsorted bookmarks is odd considering they’re(these folders) already+always in the left panel.

          • escruting

            Agreed.

          • kesha2000

Please, delete/hide “Trash” entry from the heart menu. It really shouldn’t be there.

          • Radek Rzepecki

why? some people use it, I do … 🙂

          • kesha2000

Well, there is a separate button below to delete/undo items. But if I delete something by simply choosing “Trash” folder, next time my new bookmark will also go to trash. It’s always been confusing for me, since there are no setting for default save location.

          • escruting

What im seeing is that, yes, the unsorted bookmarks section is there because i have bookmarks inside, but its already forcing me to use My Folders as my default location.

And, why change this? the way it was before was nice and useful. Why do the bookmarks go to the root level of My Folders? when they are not….folders?

EDIT: I see you changed the name to My Bookmarks, its ok now, i guess.

  • novainc

Speed dial icon is too bold on Ubuntu 16.04 64bits when using a 1366×768 screen. Also, some html5 elements are still broken as shown by http:/youtube.com/html5 as it has been since beta 43, which makes it impossible to watch instagram video, listen to facebook audio and some other stuff online. I have the ffmpeg packages installed as well as the chromium-ffmpeg-extra (or something like that) packages.

    • Andrew Andreyuk

      > some html5 elements are still broken

      sudo add-apt-repository ppa:canonical-chromium-builds/stage
      sudo apt-get update
      sudo apt-get install chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra

      • novainc

Thanks for you response. Unfortunately I already have that package installed, as well as ffmpeg. Integration seems to just be broken.

  • Slavic

The control icons left from address bar (Back, Forward, Reload, Start page) look blurred and have low contrast, at least on my PC (Windows 7 x64). Very noticeable difference from previous beta. Is it a bug or a newly implemented flag in non-optimal state?

    • Leonardo Gomes

Did you check the ‘known issues’ part of the post?

      • Slavic

Yes, I saw that, but asked a question because a lot of new flags were added and I didn’t try to change them all yet. If it’s only a temporary bug, no problem 🙂

  • nanana1

What is the known bug : File picker for some downloads doesn’t show ?

Not sure if it’s the same issue I had about the” Download” being broken on some websites.

    • Leonardo Gomes

I guess they are the same.

  • Юлия

It has the regular theme. Thank God for that. But some bugs are being ported to Beta from Dev, most noticeable one being DNA-59018, which is a regression.

    DNA-59018
Menu > New private window… results in broken chrome if Opera is maximised
    https://i.imgur.com/QEJzS8I.png

    DNA-57453
Private window borders are too thick
    https://i.imgur.com/A4i0ktf.png

DNA-59018 is reproducible on W10 as well if these flags are disabled:
    chrome://flags/#submodule-native-theme-alt
    chrome://flags/#windows-10-skin

    • redfox

Yes, I also prefer the regular themes, not the Win10/Linux-like ugly looking ones.

  • Cobalt

Dear Developers, please make the item “Open image in new tab” first, or at least second in the context menu like in other browsers! This context menu item is used very often.

    • firuz_u7

I like when in the beginning to save image

    • Leonardo Gomes

Why reporting it when it’s a feature/change request?

  • sgrandin

It would be nice if the Print Destination reverted to the default printer between computer sessions. I’ve noticed that most of my other programs, including browsers, do that, but not Opera. That I switched printers for a specific job a day or two ago or more is something that’s easy to miss until hearing the wrong printer in operation. (The reason for “a day or two or more” is because Opera’s print module is not good enough for even most basic jobs, and I have to switch to a more print friendly browser.)

  • Regnas

    Just more Reborn, please…….. 🙂

  • sgrandin

Noticed for at least a few beta versions now that the forward/back arrows are relatively light (and thin), i.e., not at all meaningfully bolded, and that it’s often difficult to tell if they are active or not.

  • Cobalt

Please make a useful and functional fullscreen mode like in Firefox and Yandex Browser:

I can not open all your links to screenshots. I always receive a message

“This site can not provide a secure connection redirect.viglink.com has sent an invalid response. Try running Windows network diagnostics.”

It doesn’t matter if I switch all my extensions on or off.

      • Cobalt

        Very strange… o_o

        • Ralf Brinkmann

Yes. All your links to http://jpegshare.net in all your comments.

          • Ralf Brinkmann

            That works!

          • Cobalt

Have you tried to open links in another browser?

          • Ralf Brinkmann

Yes. It’s the same in Google Chrome, Firefox and Vivaldi.

          • Cobalt

Have you tried to enable the VPN in the browser?

          • Ralf Brinkmann

            Nod, I didn’t. Should I?
With VPN on it works. But now Opera crashes, when I try to switch VPN off again. Known issue. How can I switch VPN off now?

Oh, I got it. I have to switch to “optimal location” and while it is connecting I can turn off VPN without crash.

          • Ralf Brinkmann

They open in Opera, when I click them direct or as “open in new tab” (what I usually do), but they don’t open in my other browsers.

          • Cobalt
          • Ralf Brinkmann

I can open this page too. I think it’s because of https. The not working one was only http.

    • Leonardo Gomes

And where’s the full-screen on those images? If there are bars then it’s not full-screen.

      • Cobalt

The top panel appears when you move the cursor to the top of the screen.

  • neomoto

After this update I can’t open any of https sites! Opera shows me SSL error page with warning. Even comlplete reinstall and wiping out beta didn’t help. Previous version (43.xxx) worked just fine. I had to remove Opera beta and install Opera stable, and I don’t like use Opera stable

    • Ralf Brinkmann

Are you sure that you mean https sites and not http?

      • neomoto

        I am absolutely sure

  • Cobalt

Is anyone else experiencing problems with these image hostings:
    http://jpegshare.net/

    ???

    • Юлия

No, works for me. However, check my comment here:
      https://www.opera.com/blogs/desktop/2017/01/opera-beta-43-0-2442-22-update/#comment-3094790439

Disqus implemented some tracking (I assume it’s for tracking purposes) and uBlockOrigin (and many other content blockers) blocks whatever Disqus is doing with the links. I asked Opera if they’re able to revert this change with no answer from them.
It happens the same with your link:
      https://i.imgur.com/VjJFX9S.png

The solution for the time being is to enclose links into tag.

      • Ralf Brinkmann

Thank you, I think, this is a good explanation. I’m only surprised, that I have the same effect, when I switch off uBlock origin and all other extensions. But maybe this is caused because I also use HostMan. The problem for me is, that I can not simply copy the link, paste it in another tab or browser and shorten it, because a lot of characters are changed by disqus (or Opera) to I don’t know what. UTF-8? So it’s difficult to change them all back to valid characters.

      • Ari

        This link
        https://i.imgur.com/VjJFX9S.png

Works for me, with uBlock enabled. Probably I’m not reproducing it correctly.

This build lost flag opera://flags/#sync-oauth2 and now my synchronization not work anymore. I set this flag value to “Disabled” and was able to sync on my workplace. But i guess now it’s forced to use OAuth2.

Please tell me will this flag ever come back?

    • Leonardo Gomes

A flag is removed when the associated experiment is ended and therefore its no longer necessary.
So I guess the answer is no.

After the update I had issues with websites with self signed certificates. It can’t be open even the certificate has been added to trusted certificates.

Version: 44.0.2510.73 – Opera is up to date
    Update stream: beta
    System: Windows 8.1 64-bit (WoW64)

    • redfox

      Any examples?

      • motyus

Difficult to give an example, since they are intranet pages. Now the whole page I need to access cannot be access, there was no problem with the prior version, and occurs after Opera updates.

        ——————————————-
The error message looks like this:
        ——————————————-
        Your connection is not private

You attempted to reach xyzdomrepos.xylife.xyzdom.com, but the server presented a certificate signed using a weak signature algorithm (such as SHA-1). This means that the security credentials the server presented could have been forged, and the server may not be the server you expected (you may be communicating with an attacker).

You cannot proceed because the website operator has requested heightened security for this domain.

        Back to safety
        Help me understand

When you connect to a secure website, the server hosting that site presents your browser with something called a “certificate” to verify its identity. This certificate contains identity information, such as the address of the website, which is verified by a third party that your computer trusts. By checking that the address in the certificate matches the address of the website, it is possible to verify that you are securely communicating with the website you intended, and not a third party (such as an attacker on your network).

You cannot visit xyzdomrepos.xylife.xyzdom.com right now because the website uses HSTS. Network errors and attacks are usually temporary, so this page will probably work later.

      • motyus

Hmmm or maybe that is not about self sign cert but more about to access page with certificate using weak signature algorithm SHA-1. But how to solve it?

    • Dart

Same problem on beta 44. Opera 43 Stable without this issue.

I do not really like the new icons in the navigation bar:

    – the backwards button does not show if I reached the first site I entered: It was always black/dark and if it was grey I knew I am at the start again. And it looks somehow blurry.

    – the speed dial buttons should have 9 tiles again. Looks incomplete.
