Hi,

The Opera 43 cycle has just started, and we’re working on some new stuff. They are not here yet, but looking through changelog, you can find some partial work already delivered.

PGO for Windows

In O42 we are delivering x64 version of Windows builds, which are slightly faster than x32 version.
In O43 we plan to deliver another set of performance improvements Profile Guided Optimizations (PGO) – a Visual Studio compiler feature able to speed up the build.
When a compiler optimizes a program, there is a trade-off between the program size and the program speed. If we tried to maximize the speed of everything, our browser would be a 1-GB download, and as the result it would consume a lot of memory and become slow instead.
Traditionally a compiler can only see the source code, but with the PGO, you let the compiler “see” the program running. That way it “learns” which parts of the code are important and which parts are not so much important, and can optimize the important parts in a much more effective way.

Address bar speculative prerenderer

When you type something in the address bar, the browser uses the previous behaviour to predict which web site you intend to load. If it finds a match, it will start loading that website in the background. Previous behaviour means all previous address bar inputs which led to loading a specific web site. So if you start the browser typing “nyt.com” every time, it will eventually learn that and load New York Times in the background. Also when you search for something, it will load the results likely to be clicked, in the background.
Effectively, your websites load speed should be improved.

Native chromecast support

We’re working on the built-in chromecast support as opposed to using external extensions for that. So, installing the Google Cast extension from the store won’t be needed anymore. You can already test it via #media-router flag

O12 like links selection

We want to bring back the O12 link selection:

  • horizontal mouse movements: select text
  • vertical mouse movements: drag link

Bookmarks export

Finally – a function that many of you requested for a long time. The bookmark export, when it is ready, will allow you to save all of your bookmarked pages to an .html file. To do so, click the ‘Export Bookmarks’ label found under the Bookmarks menu, and then choose the name and destination for your exported bookmarks file.

Media codecs bugfixing

If you spot an error playing a song or movie, please let us know your OS and website, so that we can debug the problem.

Known issues

Plugins do not work on Windows 10. We are working on that.

Please take the build, check it out and let us know in the comments what you think about it!

Hi Kornelia, congrats on the first release of the Opera developer 43 😉

  • nanana1

All files downloaded with the previous and this Opera Developer and the other Beta version now carry the security warning under its Properties :
“This file came from another computer and might be blocked to help protect this computer.”
This happens even though I have disabled this Unblock nag on my computer for my downloaded files.

The Opera Stable version is still downloading files without this security warning yet 😉

Is there any way to disable this security warning tags on files downloaded with this Opera Developer and the current Beta version ?

  • x a

Opera-Button aka main menu has no O at all no more in this build on Linux. 😮

    • Wojciech Jaszcz

Thanks for feedback. We will fix it.

  • Zin

Good to see Opera 12 things back, i hope several others will come, optimizations SURELY rule too. 🙂

  • Tommy Wille

O12 link selection is massively appreciated. The way it works today can get the most calm individual to go mental. Thanks. 🙂

  • NoName

Where do I turn off the “Address bar speculative prerenderer”?

    • Leonardo Gomes

You can’t turn off what is not turned on.

      • NoName

Oh, right. I was too exited about the features that I forgot all about the first part of the blogpost 🙂

  • Женя Т…

O12 like links selection yeah, finally!

    • Женя Т…

      But now doesn’t work.

  • Eugene B.

Changing bookmark picture (SD) via heart menu still doesn’t work.

  • Vikruntasas

Will you fix the VPN memory leak? Opera 43 Dev still gobbles the RAM with VPN on.

    Win7 x64 and Opera 43 dev x64

  • Ari

Issue: When I open a link with middle click or Ctrl+click, then grab the new tab (without having opened yet) and detach it from the window it will look like this:
    https://imagebin.ca/30qPGKNWTfQ8/Untitled.jpg

It doesn’t happen always, but you have to detach the tab while it’s loading. It happens to me mostly when I open a YT video link, but it’s reproducible with any website.

For fixing it I have to create a new tab on that new window and then go back to the one with the issue and the content will appear.
    Windows 8.1Pro x64 – Ox64 latest dev

  • Ari

How can I try 32 bits portable version? The installer is only giving me x64 version

  • MadEddy

Can anybody confirm scrolling/autoscrolling http://www.nextinpact.com/ makes the CPU spike to 100% for a couple seconds and the page temporarily hang ?

Thanks for the build, very fast.

    • Sidney Guioy

      not 100% but 85% here ( I7 4770K on all cores )

tried some other website ( nytime/ polygon ) but no cpu spike for them..

      ps: coucou l’INpactien ! 🙂

      • MadEddy

I’m still on a q6600, so I’m not surprised it goes to 100% if yours jumps to 85%. Thanks for confirming the high CPU usage.

  • Citizen Unique

Similarly to the latest Beta (v42) this version seems a bit laggy when it comes to accessing/using extensions – especially Last Pass and Gmail Checker – takes up to two seconds just to open the balloon popups in those. Too frustrating for me at the moment, back to the stable build.

  • Kai Ockendorf

After I opened Opera Developer, the whole screen turned white for a couple seconds before Speed Dial showed up!! That was very strange & the build itself felt sluggish…was better after some time & I was thinking it could be part of this “PGO learning process”, but I don’t know. But every time I close the browser, it takes ages to close & after that the Windows loading circle comes up on my Desktop!

About the O12 features: great!! Thank you…so changes are pretty good that we might see the tab changer gesture back too (right Mouse click + scroll wheel) 🙂

    W10x64, O43x64 (auto-update worked)

    • ive

tab changer gesture: right Mouse click + scroll wheel

one of the most missed features!

      • Kai Ockendorf

Totally agreed!!!!!!! Hope they will bring it back 🙂

    • Ari

Same to me but this started on latest beta released!! Glad I’m not the only one 🙂

      • Kai Ockendorf

You are right! happened here too, but no one wrote about it, so I thought it was only me 😉

        • Ari

Also clicking on uBlock extension takes like a second or two to its popup to appear, mostly sure because of this bug.

          • Kai Ockendorf

True! Thought it had something to do with this PGO learning process! But only the Devs can answer that.

  • Sidney Guioy

"X64 slightly faster than x32 version" Any bench / data ? faster UI ? Faster browsing ? ( does that mean somehow better battery saving ? )

Am I the only one having problems with videos on imgur? Been having them for some time now, some videos simply don’t load. Working fine on Chrome. Example:

      • sneaker

I’m on Win7 x64, Opera x64 (but happened with 32bit Opera as well, I only recently switched to 64 bit dev builds)

    • RafaellaG

      works fine here too.
      Win10x64 (build14393.351) with Opera x64

      Do you have JavaScript enabled?

      • sneaker

        Yes, JavaScript is enabled.

    • bwat47

I haven’t noticed this on desktop, but I do see this issue on Opera beta on my android phone

    • DaZung

Working here (still going thru my music collection to find the appropriate sound track 🙂 .Check if you have any ad blocker active (including Opera’s) and try to disable.

      Running O43 on W10 1607, both x64

      • sneaker

I have disabled all plugins but it doesn’t solve the problem.

Interesting that everyone answering is on Win10. Seems I’m the only person left on Win7.

  • Ralf Brinkmann

The list of planned features sounds really good. But where is the item “Allow the use of TAB key on the internal downloads page”?

  • Daivy Merlijs

“O12 like links selection” oh yes. Bring back more Opera 12 features and I think you will be the best browser.
Please tell me that you will make coming back grouping tabs and web panel in the feature. It’s the only features that Opera miss to be the best browser. Vivaldi has already them.

  • Matheus Bombonato

Plugins works but browser is much much slower than usual.

  • Vux777

    about “O12 like links selection”…
does that mean we will be able to drag links with left click? (vertically)

    Running O43 on W10 1607, both x64

    • Ralf Brinkmann

How can you play this? “Flash plugin failed to load”. Known issues, I think.

      • DaZung

I do not have flash installed, so I think it’s HTML5 video. This behavior is also present at least in O42 btw.

        • Ralf Brinkmann

This is very strange, because I receive explicitly the message, that I should control if the flash player is installed. And the flash player does not start, because plugins do not work in this version (known issues).

        • Ralf Brinkmann

Hm, I have tried out it in Google Chrome now, in Firefox and in Vivaldi. They all can play the video (didn’t Google Chrome stop playing Flash videos?), but my Opera doesn’t. Not with my standard working profile and not with a fresh, empty, virgin profile.

        • Ralf Brinkmann

I found the solution for me: If the plugin “flash player” is installed and enabled, Opera always tries to use it and does not automatically switch to HTML mode, if the plugin does not work, even I have enabled “Prefer HTML over Flash” in the flags!
After disabling flash player the video runs, but the sound is like playing a 45 single with 33 on LP modus.

Opera, please can you have an eye on this behaviour?

  • DaZung

Following link still crashes tab every time (already reported as DNAWIZ-8296):

          Don’t know. I use an AMD Radeon R9 270x.

    • tarkus

No problem here, too (NVIDIA GeForce 9600GT)

    • Ralf Brinkmann

I can confirm this. Crashes after some seconds of waiting.

      Operax64
      NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960

    • Leonardo Gomes

Yep, the page crashes here too.

    • Robert Tomaszewski

      Hello DaZung,
      Thank you for reporting this!
I tried to reproduce the crash on the build 43.0.2403.0 but I could not.
I have looked at your report DNAWIZ-8296 and I can see the version that you used while experiencing the crash was 42.0.2374.0. It is the previous Developer build. Can you re-check with 43.0.2403.0, please?

      • DaZung

Still happens with 43.0.2403. Running without any extensions. Tried to disable hardware acceleration but still crashes. If there is a way to get some sort of debug info you may find useful just tell me how.

    • Юлия

Works fine on Win7. Do you have any plugins installed (like Flash)?
I see in your other comment here that you’re using Intel GPU. W10 1607 broke some functionality for them, try updating your graphics driver (even if it’s in beta). Maybe this can help: http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/graphics-drivers/graphics-for-6th-generation-intel-processors/intel-hd-graphics-530.html (I don’t use iGPU so I don’t know exactly if this is or not the driver download page).

A remark (for all versions): Opera starts from ‘launcher’ which activates the latest build. The problem is that not all software on my PC understand and connect to ‘launcher’ so I have to re-direct them (every-time there is an update), to the latest folder containing the actual Opera file. Is there a solution to this problem?

Do you mean you can’t start it?

        “Connecting…” forever.

      • Mikołaj Małecki

I’m also in Germany. Previously it was showing 4 possible VPN locations. Now it shows only “United states”, doesn’t show the IP address at all and “Connecting…” lasts forever.

        • Ralf Brinkmann

I have just tried it out with Opera developer 43.0.2420.0: Again 5 locations and a very fast connection. No problems here.

          • Mikołaj Małecki

Same version, Windows 7. Location: Rendsburg (through Kiel). Only “United States” appears and connection attempt forever.

I wish I had at least something to diagnose the problem.

  • Ariane Lu

I see a good feature available in Opera 42 Beta and 43, it called “Currency converter”, But why it only available in USD?

I don’t like search “10 USD is how many CNY” in Google everytime

    • Leonardo Gomes

It’s available for 32 currencies listed in the European Central Bank: https://www.ecb.europa.eu/stats/exchange/eurofxref/html/index.en.html

      • Ariane Lu

CNY is listed in this page.

        http://www.opera.com/blogs/desktop/2016/11/opera-42-beta-currency-converter/
This post show me it will convert USD to PLN, but when i select €1.2, it will convert to $1.29, not ¥8.7(CNY)

EDIT: My browser language is setup as Chinese, so i think it should convert to CNY not USD

        • Leonardo Gomes

In settings > Browser > User interface, check if currency is set to CNY.

          • Ariane Lu

            Yep, Set as Chinese(PRC)

          • Leonardo Gomes

PRC? I don’t see PRC on the list but I see CNY.

And if I select CNY, currency converter shows me the values converted to CNY.

          • Ariane Lu

I mean my browser language is setup as Chinese(PRC), main land of China, Currency unit is CNY

Edit: I miss it. this check box may better if place in language rather than user interface

I have the latest Flash player version installed and enabled.
    Why can’t I play videos?

Its still problem with ffmpeg codecs. If you move to /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/opera/ you can see libffmpeg.so file. Thats the problem. I fixed it in Opera 42 by linking libffmpeg.so from Chrome but in Oper 43 it doesnt work. You can try do this manually follow this tutorial
https://solus-project.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1004 but its still causes problems. I also tried to compile my own ffmpeg package but result is the same.
    https://gist.github.com/ruario/bec42d156d30affef655

The simplest way to check if this works is go to https://www.youtube.com/html5 and all checkboxes should be blue.

Every time I update Opera i have to waste my time to find out solution for missing codecs. Problem is also with Firefox, for now only Chrome works like it should be.

    Dear Kornelia,
    Pozdrawiam 😉

The 43 cycle is very buggy when it comes to window resizing – both with videos and text.
Basically, if you start at a smaller size and then move to fullscreen or just a larger window, the video / page / image will not resize, and you get a gray margin around the smaller page or image.

  • LBW

I cannot play clips in Amazon. It says The following plugins were blocked on this page: Adobe Flash player. Adobe is “enabled” under the Plugins. Still not working. Works fine in every other browser, just not Opera.

Fullscreen not working. It expands to ~ 75% of the screen, with a large gray band on two sides.
I posted this 2 weeks ago, still no fix: “The 43 cycle is very buggy when it comes to window resizing – both with videos and text.
