Today, Opera 42 lands in the beta channel, with a currency converter, personal newsreader improvements and even smarter startup.

Currency converter

We love shopping online, but sometimes the price can be in a different currency. Opera 42 beta is the first major browser with an integrated currency converter, making it super easy to check what items cost.

Opera currency converter

To use the currency converter, simply select the price you want to convert on the page and Opera will automatically show it in your local currency. You can also change your output currency in settings.

Opera 42 supports converting from 32 currencies based on daily values from the European Central Bank.

Personal newsreader improvements

In this beta version, discovering feeds is even easier. If a page publishes web feed, a little newspaper icon will appear in the address bar. Click it and select one to open. If you find it interesting, you can always add it to your existing sources. If you’d prefer to keep your address bar clean and simple, just go to settings and disable this feature.

Feed discovery

Once you have your favorite sources configured, you can get a notification whenever there’s a new content. If that happens, a blue dot will appear over the newspaper icon (on the left of the navigation bar). You can configure the frequency of content checking in settings, or disable it completely.

In addition, the personal newsreader in Opera 42 includes:

  • unified look and feel in both reading modes – timeline and stack;
  • source suggestions that are more visually appealing;
  • support for Tamil language.

Even smarter and faster startup

Opera’s faster startup mechanism, introduced in Opera 41, tries to determine which tabs are most important to have available, and starts loading those tabs in the background at startup. In Opera 42 beta, we now take into account which tabs were most recently used before you quit Opera, instead of relying on the order of tabs to determine which ones to load on startup.

Usability improvements

We’ve also provided a number of usability enhancements, i.e. simplified bookmarks structure and different logic for showing sync and tabs icons. Also, some some pop-outs and hints that were shown for first-time users have been removed. We hope that you will find these small improvements helpful.

Background sync

If you ever encountered the “Sorry, come back later and try again” problem with your web application due to a poor internet connection, you know how frustrating it can be. Especially when you are trying to send a message or perform some other action and you need to constantly check if the web is back. The solution is the background sync method, now supported in Opera 42 beta. It enables web applications to synchronize data in the background.

Other improvements

  • The push notifications technique allows your website to send notifications to people even when they are not browsing your website.
  • You can configure your Speed Dial navigation bar by the context menu. Just right-click the sidebar and configure which menu items you want visible.

Known issues

  1. “Click to play” cannot be selected in settings.
  2. Crash after double click on video detach icon (OS X only).

Why do you keep adding useless function that could be implemented by 3rd party extensions instead of bringing useful stuff from the Good Old Opera 12 like tab grouping…

    • BK

Useless feature for you is a game changer for the other person.
But stay tuned, more and more features is being added, surly you will find something for you too.

      • mori bund

        Blablabla…
People are waiting for tab stacking for years now.
And yes! the “other person” would prefer tab stacking too.
If you don’t believe me, look into the opera forums where countless people ask for that, and all you hear from opera about that is “crickets”.

      • Nekomajin43

Will you ever finish a new feature before you consider it done? Yes, I am talking about the “by design” RSS detector right now.

        • BK

Hi. Sorry, I’m out of the RSS discussion loop here. But we do not consider it “done” or “finished” though.

          • Nekomajin43

It was only one example. The most current one.

      • sgrandin

After how many more years?? Good currency converters are readily available online, but most features are not.

      • tvf77

Well, it _is_ pretty useless if you happen to do your shopping inside a single currency area (all of US, or all Euro countries, or all of China) and also if you use your browser to do anything else in addition to shopping…

  • yigido

Currency converter is great addition I just used and I realized I did need it 😀
But please fix the “Turkish Liras” icon on popup : https://vgy.me/RHMr5n.png

    • Aneta Reluga

      Thanks for the report!

      • yigido

Did you create bug report for this? Thanks

        • Aneta Reluga

          Yes, internally tracked as DNA-57940

          • yigido

            Great 🙂

  • MadEddy

When beta branch goes a higher version than developer branch, you should probably push the build to developer branch too so we can test it until next dev build. Thanks for the beta.

    • BK

Hi. Dev update with chromium 56 is expected early next week.

      • MadEddy

I meant pushing the beta build to dev branch until a newer dev build is released, when the beta branch is higher version than the dev branch like current beta is. That way dev branch users can test the new fixes until a newer version is released through dev branch. Sorry for my bad english.
        Thanks for the updates.

  • Regnas

Keep it up guys, waiting for more cool stuff…. 🙂
    Cheers….

    • BK

Thanks ! More is coming soon 🙂

  • Nekomajin43

Guys, will you ever remove the SPAM from the news reader?

    • Leonardo Gomes

Spam? Do you mean the suggestions?

Yep. And the top50 stories or what.

What about just not looking at the Top Fifties?

          • Nekomajin43

          • Herr Pietrus

Personally i think that, after removing some suggestions, their amount is acceptable now. 🙂

          • Nekomajin43

Well, it’s hard for me to tolerate spam. I don’t think it would be too much trouble to put a checkbox into the header of the news reader to turn the spam off…

  • Pavel

Well, first you refuse to implement dozen of crucial features from the old Opera (including bookmarks!), that made Opera what it was, motivating that all those features irrelevant and could be added by third party AddOns and then you adding… a currency converter. Really?!

    • sgrandin

Could it be that a currency converter is about making money, while all that “old” stuff is overhead – staff time, cheap users, etc.?

    • No one is stopping you from using MS Edge or whatever it is you people use these days. Nobody want’s to read your bullshit here.

      • Pavel

No one is forcing you to read this, you are free to scroll down or leave this page. Bye.

        • Raylan Givens

It’s clear the old Opera never worked. It was for a small, niche amount of users. Bulky and with a ton of useless features it had become. You can go to Vivaldi, the old Opera devs and see… They’re the only ones that already managed to a make a Chromium-based browser to have laggy UI… I thought it was almost impossible with so many instances ( multi-process ) to become laggy… but you know, never say never.

          • Ari

LOOOL, totally true, have tried it, at first I thought it was faster than Opera. After a week I came back to Opera and daaamnn… man Opera it’s a lightning in comparison.

          • tarkus

I’ve just now read your remarks, that’s why it took me so long to comment on them! It seems you’ve started using Opera since version 15, as a Chromium clone. So you say Opera had a ton of useless features. You could at least pay some respect to the programmers, Opera 12 was a 11.5 mb download – at least 3.5 times less the size of a Chromium based browser without any extension included – and incorporated every feasible feature to make a browser friendly to the end user, in those 11.5 mb it had included even a great mail client, an achievement of great proportions! And that’s not all: have you ever tried to compare resources consumption? Of course it was difficult for a small Company to finance the development of Presto against Google and Microsoft, but the legacy is there. I am here because of this legacy!

      • Harry

        Or yours.

    • Herr Pietrus

It seems that they understood their mistake. And that’s cool!

    • Cobalt

Would be better if the developers went back to the old features and improve them (for example, mouse gestures).

  • Юлия

So Mozilla cuts access to the battery API for websites. No website uses this function responsably, but to track the user. In Firefox it can already be disabled via about:config, but no such option exists in Chromium or Opera: https://i.imgur.com/j8IHeUs.png

Maybe you can change that in Opera, since you anyway have your own battery saving feature. Make Battery API optional via opera://flags or even get rid of it.

    Test site: http://pstadler.sh/battery.js/

    • BK

      We will address this soon.

  • Herr Pietrus

    converter is really nice 🙂

  • kesha2000

Currency converter is a really nice feature and you managed to make a very neat implementation of it. Unfortunately for me, it doesn’t support UAH, here’s hoping you’ll add more currencies with time.

P.S. Btw, Opera became №2 browser in Ukraine last month. Congrats ;).

    • Kornelia

Thanks for the news, it’s really nice to hear. This feature will probably be developed further if users find it useful. So stay tuned.

      • JJ53

Copying the result of the conversion would be a welcome addition.

    • BK

Guys, maybe it’s time to stop add new features and go back to improving the old one (for example: mouse gestures, font rendering, performance of scrolling etc.)? You are slowly but surely moving in the Bloatware direction: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_bloat
Already have Vivaldi and it makes no sense to chase him.

    • BK

Good news for you : we are working on performance at the very moment. More updates in O43 cycle.

      • Cobalt

Vivaldi overloaded every superfluous and useless crap. This is an attempt on new technologies create the past.

    • yigido

Why would a currency converter be a high priority?

    • BK

Hi. This feature is not for everyone, ofc.
We are working on many projects/features and this happened to be finished in O42 dev cycle.

      • Kai Ockendorf

You mean the upcoming O43 dev cycle, right?

        • BK

Hm.. I mean that currency converter has been finished in O42 cycle, and that’s why it has been delivered in beta 42 now.

Issue: When I open a link with middle click or Ctrl+click, then grab the new tab (without having opened yet) and detach it from the window it will look like this:
    https://imagebin.ca/30qPGKNWTfQ8/Untitled.jpg

It doesn’t happen always, but you have to detach the tab while it’s loading. It happens to me mostly when I open a YT video link, but it’s reproducible with any website.
For fixing it I have to create a new tab on that new window and then go back to the one with the issue and the content will appear.

I have to get it out of my system! Guys, since O15 I’ve lived for ages without a bookmarks manager, learned to use Speed-Dial for my bookmarks, wasn’t able for months to import my O12 bookmarks, lived without side bar etc. just to see Opera evolving! Now I’m asking, demanding is the right word, for proper mouse gestures and better tab management! I’m tired of programming my mouse buttons to follow keyboard shortcuts. Unfortunately, I see other (useful) developments and especially I observe a fixation to the news feature, all minor issues according to my point of view. All these developments, although nice and handy, are following a different path from the one I seek to follow: adoption of the unparalleled O12 features of browser usability. Please, give me an approximate time schedule for mouse & tab handling (gestures, stack etc.) or have you completely excluded these features from your development path?

All files downloaded with this Opera beta version now have the security warning under its Properties :
“This file came from another computer and might be blocked to help protect this computer.”
This happens even though I have disabled this Unblock nag on my computer for my downloaded files.

Fortunately, the Opera Stable version is still downloading files without this security warning yet 😉

Is there any way to disable this security warning tags on files downloaded with this Opera beta version ?

is there any chance tab stacking will ever come back? 🙁

    • iwod

I want this as well. Or Tab Overflow. It could be a advance setting that allow those users to choose. My experience so far is when the Tab is too small, i accidentally click Mute on tab with video, or close the Tab without me even knowing it.

I understand the notion from Chrome, Google doesn’t want you to have 10s to hundreds of tab opened. So this will force users to quit.

But i dont see why Opera has to follow this same UX guideline. It is very likely both have a very different user group.
