Hi,

it’s time for the Opera 41 release candidate. We hope there are no serious bugs in here, and that you will find this build final worthy ๐Ÿ™‚

There are some new translations prepared. We also fixed some Mac related crashes. There should not be any problems with speed dial extensions anymore.

The changelog is available here if you’re interested in more details.

Happy testing!

Wow, this is a Opera 41 Release Candidate going Stable soon, thanks ! ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Kai Ockendorf

Thank you! Looking forward to the final version ๐Ÿ™‚ will there be an O41x64bit for the first time as a stable version then?

    • Aneta Reluga

Frankly, we are targeting 42 (the ultimate answer to everything)

      • Kai Ockendorf

Ok! I’ve waited so long for a 64bit final, so I can wait a bit longer ๐Ÿ˜‰ but what does this “ultimate answer to everything” mean? Was it a hint? Can we expect a new Dev. version soon that will blew us away?? :))

        • 42 is a reference to The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy

          • Kai Ockendorf

            Hahahahaha…totally forgot! Nice one @chasapple:disqus ๐Ÿ™‚

The bookmarks from 41 final will be sync with 42 dev again? I use dev builds at work and stable at home. My bookmarks are a mess after that security update of Sync. Everything I save at work I can’t see at home and vice-versa ๐Ÿ™

    • Jakub Ryฤ‡

Hi Matheus. Could you please check if you’re signed in on Developer and Stable? Could you also check opera:sync-internals? What’s in there? In Summary section sync service is initialized? Thanks!

  • Eugene B.

I hope we’ll see new developer tomorrow. ;o

    • BK

      The target now is Monday.

VPN still has issues of constantly reconnecting after quiting and relaunching Opera 41 RC.x64

P.S. VPN memory leak is still there.

    • alligoodw

I thought I was losing memory while using this version of Opera. Your statement supports my suspicion.

    uBlock origin

    • Aneta Reluga

Ralf, do you have these issues only with uBlock on, or also off?

      • Ralf Brinkmann

I must try out. As far as I found out in the last versions it has something to do with uBlock or with the included lists I use. But it doesn’t happen always. So it’s a bit difficult to repeat it.

      • Ralf Brinkmann

I just had another example. First played with uBlock switched on, the 1:51 m long video stopped and crumbled around 20 seconds before the end. With uBlock switched off it played till the end without a break.

        • Ari

What you are describing also happens on 9gag main page after watching a dozen of ~1min videos then start to freeze in the middle. I also have uBlock. Are you sure it could be because of that? Not sure how that can be related. W8.1 Opx86

          • Aneta Reluga

Ok, so it looks like it’s either uBlock or blocking lists issue. Just wondering if it is exactly the same (I mean the video stops playing) with uBlock off but Opera’s blocking on? Thanks!!

Don’t this decrease the page loading speed? This is why Google keep this out of their eyes..

        Nope =)

        • yigido

          Thanks.
I do not know, it is related but I hope Opera will give us not-eye strain fonts. I am very sensitive about eye-strain.
and waiting for Opera dark theme ๐Ÿ™

    • Leonardo Gomes

I guess the question should be ‘if’ instead of ‘when’.

I think that unless Chromium changes something regarding this, nothing will be changed in Opera.

    • Leonardo Gomes
    • ะฎะปะธั

Chromium’s font rendering is really bad. Text looks thin, almost blurry on lighter fonts. Somehow Chromium sometimes manages to render Disqus comments section with grayscale AA, thankfully Opera did not inherit this bug though (I think, or at least I never managed to trigger it on Opera). Unfortunatelly I doubt this is going to change any time soon.
Afaik, Firefox respects the system-wide ClearType configuration.

      • Cobalt

        Totally agree!

  • yigido

Opera Beta 64bit version auto-updated itself..auto-updater works fine, FYI.

  • iPristy

Looks like O41 works fine, i have try many things.

Chromium 54 and 55 will be important, it will bring less RAM consumption.

    • BK

      Thanks for testing ๐Ÿ™‚

I’m not sure yet about the 55 RAM consumption, we are yet to test it.

  • Jozka Jozin

    And fix for DNA-57372?

    • Aneta Reluga

Not yet but the devs are working on it.

  • Dask

I still really miss the news feed in the speed dial window. I don’t care at all about having the news hidden in another tab.

  • Aneta Reluga

It is in the queue for evaluation. DNA-57351 for reference.

    • postdante

Does it mean that you are going to talk about the idea or do you have some prototyping done already?

      • Aneta Reluga

The first one as of yet. I pinged the suggestion in the comment, but no promises.

        • postdante

          Ok, dziฤ™ki ๐Ÿ˜‰

  • Ralf Brinkmann

Wow! Nice crash! My open Facebook tab just took more than 30 percent while I was returning from another tab. I could not go on and had to close Opera.
    W10x64 (32 GB Ram)
    Operax64

    • Aneta Reluga

      Thanks, we’ll investigate.

  • When I oper previously closed session with many open tabs and they start “lazy” loading (extended) in the background it’s load only ten. And after that every next tabs load from the beginnings. Why is that? What flags regulate it? Or option? It never happend earlier…

    • cicciazzo

      opera://flags/?search=delay#extended-lazy-session-loading

I hate it… hope it will not become the default in future release!

      • Thank you. But I’ve seen this flag, if I disable it will turn off the background loading at all. But if I enable it, it’s start to load tabs in background, but only 10 of all, and that not how it works in earlier versions.

        • Leonardo Gomes

I guess that limit of 10 pages loading in background on Opera startup is by design to decrease startup time.

          • I wish that this option was customizable at least. ๐Ÿ™

          • BK

What value would you set and why ?

          • I liked to use many open tabs at once and it very annoying for me when after restart a browser only 10 first tabs loads in the backgroung and for every next tab I need to wait when it load itself. It never happend early, and I can’t find what change in some of the last versions. And I want to return how it works earlier, when all tabs are load no matter how much was open in last session.

          • BK

Ok. if you enable advanced settings, then in basic settings you will find option to disable/enable this entirely, like you want ๐Ÿ™‚

          • If you talk about completly disable delayed load and load all tabs at once, it not what I want and it not how it work earlier. I like delayed “lazy” load, but it just stop after few tabs.
But if now it is only option it sad.. but okay.. maybe..:(

          • BK

Currently it stops after 10th tab. Not only this speeds up startup, but also saves CPU and RAM usage.

How much tabs do you have on average?

          • I just like open links from feeds all-at-once, it’s around 140-160 tabs, 16 Gb RAM + core-i7 cpu allow me to keep all this in memory without any problem. ๐Ÿ™‚

          • BK

Ok. Thanks for feedback. I will check with the team if there is something we can change here.

          • cicciazzo

ah! exactly the opposite of what I want! ๐Ÿ™‚

      • Leonardo Gomes

        It’s already a default AFAIK.

      • BK

        why ?

        • cicciazzo

I prefer to load tabs on demand, ie when I click on them, because:
          1) on METERED connections loading all tabs wastes my data plan. If I want to see a tab I’ll click on it!
          2) on SLOW networks loading all tabs, even delayed, inevitably slows down the network. If I want to load an entirely new page I have to wait for other tabs to stop using bandwitdh.

If now it’s the default then please do NOT remove the flag to restore previous behaviour.

I’m really using opera just for this reason: tab loading like firefox. If this feature will be removed I’ll go back to firefox, even if it’s slower.

          • BK

Right, we probably missed to take both cases into account, focusing mostly on faster startup in regular environment. We will reevaluate this. Thanks for your answer!

          • cicciazzo

thank you for your reply. if you decide to keep the tab-loading-on-demand approach maybe you could write a blog about how opera help save data plan relative to chrome ๐Ÿ˜€

  • Vlad Violenty

When you present sync password in Opera mini and opera mobile?

    • Leonardo Gomes

It’s better to ask in the Mobile Team blog.

      • Ralf Brinkmann

        They don’t answer.

        • Leonardo Gomes

Yep, we all should know it by now. ๐Ÿ™‚

But the chances are for sure greater than asking in the desktop team blog.

        • Andreas Bovens

Sorry, where did you ask this?

To answer the question: we’re looking into password sync, but for now, we only sync Speed Dial, bookmarks, tabs and typed history.

Flash plugin on Linux not working if we use plugin bundled from Chrome.

Google change few things. One is downloading and updating in chrome://components/.
And also path to Flash is change. From opt/google/chrome to new path /.config/google-chrome/PepperFlash/

Can you fix, path to Flash in Linux?

  • Juan Vase

I see that when I hover over a theme, neither in this or developer, its name does not appear as popup or tool tip, whatever it is. ๐Ÿ™
But maybe ^o) thats a clever ruse, so we dont use them in other browsers if we start liking them later, as it willl mean a lot of work.

And more importantly, url doesnt appear in bookmark manager too.

  • Ahmed Mohamed

    thx

  • novainc

I’m having two problems now. First off, flash isn’t working on the browser. Second, after updating A LOT of websites are refusing to open due to “DNS not found”, but they all work if I turn on VPN. I am on Ubuntu 16.04LTS 64 bits.

    • Ari

Why it isn’t working? Have you downloaded flash 23?
Try clearing cookies and cache data for dns problem.

      • novainc

I would like to know why it isn’t working, that way I would fix it. I have ppapi-nonfree installed and everything is set up in what I read is the correct configuration (even though it used to work out of the box, the way it is supposed to work if I’m not wrong). The DNS issue is now gone and was actually due to the massive DDoS attack that was going on yesterday.

        • Arjan van Leeuwen

Try installing adobe-flashplugin from the Canonical Partners repository (you might have to enable it first). This is the official package from Adobe, and it includes the PPAPI plugin that Opera needs.

          • novainc

This worked. I forgot to upload this comment. Thanks for your support.

Only in 32 bits for this time, if I understood well

        • Leonardo Gomes

It seems so. They are saying that 64 bits builds for Windows should come with version 42.

    • Leonardo Gomes

Based on previous releases I would guess next week.

Hi, I have a problem on Google Images and uBlock. First I want to clarify that on Chrome/Firefox and uBlock this bug is NOT present.

1- Search for example “beautiful landscapes” on Google Images.
2- Start clicking on some images, also on the ones under “Related Images” section.
3- After like a dozen of images it will stop displaying them and from that moment on until I refresh the page, none of any clicked image will show up. Looking like this:
    https://ibin.co/2zIhx2IOLHLd.jpg.

Note: If I turn off uBlock and refresh the page then the bug doesn’t occur but as I said it’s not happening on any other browser with the same add-on.

Thanks and sorry if this should be addressed by uBlock and not by you.

    • Ari

In case it matters to anyone out there, it was a bug on Fanboy Social Blocking list. It’s reported.

  • Kevinar

Hi, I have a problem with your image search results in Google Images. I have a new clean installation and I donยดt have install uBlock/AdBlock. When I turn on VPN everything is ok. When VPN is turned off Google is broken.

I really prefer the old, recently removed from opera://flags news page, which worked much better even though it didn’t have RSS support, it was so much faster to get the news I wanted, simple choice of “Global news from gaming and technology”, sometimes the new news page stops showing news for no reason at all, removing news sources seem to help, but these are news sources added automatically by Opera itself, that worked just fine before.

    • Chrissi G

Is there any way to get the old news back?

  • Nashuim

Thank you for fixing the video pop out bug

  • Mike Walsh

I cannot install Opera 40 / 41 on my machine.
I have an older comp running XP SP1 and wanted to update to the latest Opera.
However the Auto Update always says an error occurred during download, and cannot be corrected. It offers to install manually. I have dl 40 off line install package. and 41.43.56 both of which wont even begin to install .. I get a popup saying ” Downloading XP Compatible installer”. It never starts to dl anything.. and the popup disappears after a few seconds. So I downloaded the Wndows XP installer 4.5.. ran that.. same problem.. I tried regressing to Windows installer 3.2? and installed that.. same again. This is frustrating as I have Opera 40 on my Laptop and LOOOOVE the Adblocker… Just try and open beforeitsnews . com without an adblocker.
I hope someone here can give me a fix for this.
Currently Opera 12.1 is running ok.. but l do want to update. Thanks

Keyboard is not working after a while. Have to restart Opera to make it work again. Might be a problem with an extention!?`Not checked yet.

    • Przemek Kudล‚a

Where did you notice the problem? Was is a web page or UI (e.g. address bar)?

      • kamil

I also have this problem, both in beta and stable release, I think it has something to do with the new video pop out which is also very buggy, the buttons almost never work, youtube (and other sites) become unresponsive (can’t stop or skip the video) when using pop-out.

        • Przemek Kudล‚a

Are there any reproduction steps? Maybe some specific web pages?

          • trojanobelix

For me it seems to be a matter of time not a specific web page. Surfing the web often has long times doing something without using the keyboard. So I can not trigger the point the keyboard fails. I know that won’t help you, sorry.

      • trojanobelix

On every input field on a web page. Never tested it on an address bar. Just had a restart to give you this information. Very annoying

      • Adam Smith

The problem that trojanobelix described above is in fact an old bug that was introduced somewhere in 2015 and still is not fixed by Opera developers.
http://forums.opera.com/discussion/1867929/opera-stops-accepting-keyboard-input-kinda/p1 – here is the corresponding topic. From my personal experience the bug occurs regardless of the site and it is somehow connected to opera gesture engine. It would be great if you could investigate it or ask developers to investigate it because I have already send a bug report to Opera several months ago and it is still not fixed.

      • trojanobelix

        Only tested webpage

      • trojanobelix

Hard to say when it starts. I do not use the keyboard very often when browsing. So it might be bad a longer time without notice it.
