Meet Opera 41 beta:

  • 48% faster startup!
  • 30% more video conference time on battery thanks to battery savings!
  • 30% less CPU usage when using video pop-out through hardware acceleration!

In addition we have added many smaller improvements to performance, and continued improvements to our key features.

Twice as fast startup!

Starting the browser should be very fast. However, until now, if you had many tabs open in your last session, the browser would start loading all of them at the same time. This could mean slowing down the browser. With Opera 41 we’re working on optimizing browser startup time with the most recent active tab and pinned tabs being prioritized for startup, while background tabs will be loaded with decreased priority. The test results show that Opera 41 is about 48% faster than Opera 40.

Opera41-startup-time

The test was performed with 10 tabs open in the session saved in history. An Intel Core i5-5200 – 2.20GHz with SPCC SSD 120GB and 8GB DDR3 12800 (800MHz) running Windows 7 64-bit was used. Time was measured until the active tab appeared and could be used.
A cold start means your browser has not yet been open since restarting the operating system. A hot start happens when the browser has been closed and without OS restart you are launching browser again. It’s usually faster than cold start, since some needed libraries might still be in RAM memory.

Longer battery time when video conferencing

When using battery saving mode, Opera now detects which video codec can be hardware accelerated and tries to choose that codec when doing video conferencing via WebRTC (this includes services such as Google Hangouts). This should save a lot of CPU and battery for our laptop-using video-conferencing hobnobbers out there! And even if Opera can’t find a hardware-accelerated codec, Opera will now try to limit the pixel count when in battery saving mode to reduce CPU usage if possible.

Opera41-video-conference-battery-time

The test was run on a Dell laptop equipped with an Intel i7-4600 2.1 GHz, 8GB of RAM and Windows 7 64-bit.

Test steps:

  • Start Opera on fully loaded battery, make sure no other apps are running,
  • Go to appear.in and start conference
  • Connected to other machine to conference using Google Chrome

Hardware accelerated video pop-out

Since Opera became the first browser to introduce the video pop-up back in May, the videos displayed has been handled by software. This could cause extensive CPU usage, which again could lead to general system slowdown on low end computers. With Opera 41 we introduce a fully hardware accelerated video pop-out. This should greatly limit the need for CPU support and free your PC resources to other things, while you watch your favorites movies.
The test results show up to 30% less CPU usage after this change.

Opera41-hardware-accelerated-video-pop-out

Test run on a Macbook Pro Retina 15″ (Late 2013) running macOS 10.12. We’ve launched single tab with
https://vimeo.com/97073941, detached the video, and observed the lowest and highest CPU usage of Opera processes via Activity Monitor for two minutes.

Personal news

Personal news in Opera 41 got a bunch of new features and improvements. Here are just the most important ones:

  • Add source even if you don’t know exact RSS URL. Just enter page address and if any feed is found, you’ll have an option to add it. For example: enduro-mtb.com/en/ or pinkbike.com.
  • More UI changes including some little animations as well.
  • Added history navigation, now you can go back to previous view.
  • Option to preview source before adding, works nicely with history navigation.
  • Removal of “CUSTOM SOURCE” badge from manually added feeds. It’s too eye catchy and draws attention away from the title.
  • Show less recommendations.
  • Web feed preview. For example, head to http://mars.nasa.gov/rss/ and click “All Mars” link. Content will be displayed using layout known from personal news (you can switch between two modes). Moreover you can also add this feed to your sources. Note: If you have RSS detection extension, you may need to disable it.
  • My sources configuration stored in preferences and synced with Opera account.
  • Due to limited interest, News on SD removed.
  • Onboarding was redesigned and aligned with catalog. Default view for new users is Top 50.
  • Catalog includes recommendations listed in a nice fold-able section (state remembered between sessions).

Windows x64 builds

Initial benchmarks test show that x64 builds might be faster than x32 version. We are preparing to launch x64 builds in final version O42. In O41 development and stabilization cycle besides regular browsing, we are also testing if regular auto update and installation work well. If you are using x64 version, please let us know if your previous build updated properly to recent x64 release.

Known issues:

  • After upgrading from O40 where VPN was used it might happen that VPN stops working at some circumstances.
It can be fixed by clearing the third party services data. Open preferences url: opera://settings/, select “Privacy & security”, click on “Clear browsing data…”, ensure to have checked “Third party services data” and click on “Clear browsing data” button.

Thank you for this beta. It seems to be better, more stable and faster than the developer. But what I really miss is the sync icon (compared to the 40.x). I have no more control if the sync is working or the connection is lost. Is there any flag I can switch on?

    • BK

This icon is treated as notifcation. If the sync goes down, icon should reappear. If all works well, no icon is needed.

      • Ralf Brinkmann

I like the picture with the green tick. It is so reassuring. If it’s not there I miss something.

  • Raylan Givens

What I don’t understand why all these less CPU and GPU usage only when concers laptops and such? Us PC users are we 2nd class citizens? The fact that we have the PC plugged in doesn’t mean we should save utilization?

    • BK

The CPU test was made on laptop, but description is general, improvement is available for any device we support:)
Startup testing was made on classic PC.

Microsoft on Edge implemented VP9 with DXVA support… Did you do the same? Chromium or you? Because I see now on my Nvidia GPU the “Video Engine” is working even with VP9 videos and can’t believe me eyes… Please, can confirm or is it something experimental that I changed via Flags?

        • bwat47

Chromium appears to have hardware accelerated vpx now (if you go to opera:gpu you should see VPx Video Decode)

    • Daniel Bratell

All changes that have no possible negative side effects we do for all. In power save mode we also do things that some people may not like, like lowering frame rate to 30 fps. Though from the feedback we get, maybe we should move more to normal mode so everyone benefits.

If you do want to enable power save mode on your normal computer you can do so through settings. Enable the power save icon and turn it on there.

  • Citizen Unique

I’m running the x64 build, updated to v41 and so far so good, have not noticed any problems. Keep up the good work!

    • BK

      Thx. Happy browsing!

  • Kai Ockendorf

I’m on x64 too & no problems via auto update 🙂 it feels really fast…BUT: I see the “loading” circle on the mouse pointer very often, not only on startup! By opening a new tab, closing a tab…is it only me, or does anyone else has the issue too?? W10x64

    • Ralf Brinkmann

No problems with opening and closing tabs here. No loading circle except in this blog page.

      • Kai Ockendorf

Thanks Ralf, but that’s very strange! I notice the same behavior at work (W10x64, 32bit Opera) aswell after I upgraded to the latest stable version. I see this loading circle always on my speeddial page!! If I have like 5 tabs open, no problems to close them, but if I close the last tab…I see this loading circle : opening a new tab (with speeddial)…the same!!

        • Ralf Brinkmann

I don’t know what happens, if I close the last tab, because I never do this. Opera is always running and there are always around 30 tabs opened. When I close and restart Opera, then with all opened tabs. But I have no problems with opening and closing new tabs (from speed dial page or any link). What about opera://flags/?search=load#extended-lazy-session-loading and opera://flags/?search=load#lazy-session-loading-default-enabled? I have both switched off.

          • Kai Ockendorf

Thanks for the hints, but no success! I had the feeling it might have something to do with themes & I was right 🙂 I disabled this flag:
            opera://flags/?search=theme#submodule-native-theme-alt
and now this loading circle is barely perceptible!! i can live with it :))

          • Ari

Yeap, I started having this problem on O40 beta. You reported it on latest O40 beta. Pretty annoying.

          • Kai Ockendorf

Disable this flag & have a look if it works for you too!!

            opera://flags/?search=theme#submodule-native-theme-alt

          • Ari

Well it seems to have worked. And loading pages is also way faster, don’t know if that’s because of the flag or just a placebo LOL

          • Kai Ockendorf

I really hope it’s not only a placebo 😉 will test it on all versions & fingers crossed 🙂

          • Vux777

I also noticed improvement (loading circle) when disabling flag
but the scrollbars are win95 style 🙂

          • Kai Ockendorf

Ups 🙂 You are right!! Guess one of the Devs has to say something to it!

Edit: as a workaround I just installed the “Minimal Scrollbar” extension from the Chrome store 😉

          • Ralf Brinkmann

I can live with it does not mean problem solved. Here this flag is set to standard. Have you tried to play around with the hardware acceleration? Which ad blocking do you use? The built in one or any external?

          • Kai Ockendorf

True & yes, I played around with HA on/off and I use uBlock Origin & Ghostery! If all extensions are disabled the loading circle problem is still there…

  • Marko Koivuniemi

Problems with facebook pages in my saved session. Lazy session loading is so lazy – reload of tabs doesn’t help. But pressing enter in address bar seems to work.

    • BK

“so lazy”.. 🙂 can you explain bit more please?

      • Marko Koivuniemi

What. My thoroughly analyzed problem is not so clear? 😉
It happened that my session contains 5-6 facebook tabs which opened blank (Just white window). Rest of Tabs eventually loaded but those facebook tabs caused problems – I waited and tried to switch tabs but even after that reloading (by clicking mouse) doesn’t help. Eventually I noticed that if i make new tab then facebook loads but still not in those tabs in original session. Then I accidentally clicked enter in addressfield and it started to load. I have no glue can this happen again.

  • Alex Kelly

I’m really really impressed with what you guys have been doing lately. I was using chrome for so long and got bored and uninterested with browsers until I decided to try Opera again after the realese of the built in ad blocker. Since then it’s just been getting better and better and I’ve recommended it to others.

    • BK

Thx a lot. Was the recommendation successful? 🙂

      • Alex Kelly

        They sure were!

  • Marko Koivuniemi

Cannot change beta to default browser in OS X 10.12?
UPDATE …using browser, but I can change it using OS X own settings.

  • Ghirahim

Good news. X64 is the future.

  • iYuzver

“Delay loading of background tabs” – does not work.
I have no icon of detection of RSS channels though in the version for developers she works.
    Opera x64.

    • That’s expected. RSS detection didn’t get into O41 beta. We still want to work on it a bit.

      • Nekomajin43

Like changing the newspaper icon to the RSS icon? :))

    • Daniel Bratell

Can you describe how the delayed loading is not working for you?

      • iYuzver

Just does not work. When you start the browser loads all tabs.

        • cicciazzo

there is a flag to revert to old behaviour.

  • Vux777

this beta inherited problems with disqus comments from dev
it takes forever to load them

  • Cryio

“When using battery saving mode, Opera now detects which video codec can be hardware accelerated and tries to choose that codec”

Shouldn’t Opera try to pick a video codec that is hardware accelerated at any time possible? Like Edge does?

    • Daniel Bratell

There are standards and specifications for how servers and browsers should decide on a codec and we follow those by default. Only when power save mode do we tweak codec selection to try to avoid the most expensive ones. I hope this can eventually become the standard as well, but there is always servers that want to push certain codecs for reasons of their own.

The typically most problematic codecs (VP8, VP9) are not supported at all by Edge which was their “solution”. Now they have announced that they are trying to catch up on codec support so we’ll see what they do.

Another likely thing that will happen in the future is that VP8 and VP9 will get better hardware support, but that doesn’t help anyone today.

  • KJokR

    it rocks…

  • nu4a

Good job! But please consider adding a Dark theme option like in MS Edge. We need this for better midnight browsing!

    • Aneta Reluga

Thanks. I reported a suggestion and let us see what happens.

      • nu4a

        Thank you. Fingers crossed! 🙂

    • Ari

Lol because of a 20 pixels wide top bar?

      • nu4a

Sure. Many people use dark themes in Windows. And many people use Turn of the lights extension. So this is 20 pixels less perfection to me.

  • sgrandin

I only install betas, so hadn’t auditioned your VPN yet. Right off, it’s blocking Internet Download Manager from working per its settings, either automatically or manually with a special keystroke (forced). I have the latest IDM installed, as well as the IDM integration module in Extensions.

    • sgrandin

Follow up: The VPN/IDM combo works with files from websites, at least pdf’s so far, but not from a multihost site (e.g., Real-Debrid). With a private VPN provider, they have to set up a config file with a limited list of servers in order to avoid a dedicated server error with a multihost site. With Opera’s VPN, there’s no server error message but rather it’s refusing to use IDM at all. Instead, it goes straight to Win 10 Save As dialog box.

  • novainc

News aggregation is not working for me, only top 50 in english will display. I had added theverge and gsmarena in the past but since version 40 not only it’s not displaying but it won’t let me add any other source nor remove existing ones. Using beta 41 x64 on Ubuntu 16.04.1 🙁

    • Sounds weird. Did it work correctly in Opera 40?

      • novainc

I think last time it worked it was in beta 39.. either that or some update to the opera beta 40 broke it.

  • Michal

I think I want to stick with O40, but auto update kicked in and I have no idea where to turn it off. Does anyone know? 🙂

  • Jason Coplen

Flash is weird i.e. it doesn’t always work for me. Linux Mint 18 64 bit.

I’m trying to track the problem down myself to make sure my flash set up is right.

  • Dask

I actually kind of miss the news feed in the speed dial window

    • There are multiple advantages in personal news. Most importantly you can specify what you like and read. You have full control of the feed. There are two reading modes, one favours quick scanning the other is more visual and resembles layout from speed dial. In addition to all of that you can add any RSS source that you like.

I find it to be the best way to catchup with the news, both in the morning and later through out the day. Time sections are pretty useful for that.

      • Dask

Yeah, why not combine those two? The best thing about the old news feed was that I just opened a new tab and had all my news in front of me – which was SUPER convenient.

      • Nekomajin43

I am really not the fan of news on start page, but why don’t you just let to set any page as a new page? It could be the news reader, the bookmarks, or anything else we want.

      • Gloriam

Except for ‘my sources’ breaking and forcing me to click per site.. I might as well go to the sites themselves.

Please just bring it back as an option with opera://flags, it’s what it’s there for, the fact that you’ve removed this option in the first place while not fixing -anything- just makes me angry.

  • Dart

Opera x64 builds, autoupdate works well.

    • BK

      Great, thank for confirmation !

  • Izer0

    Problems persist!

BUG 1 – Tabs stacking – after I close a tab, all tabs is stacked to the left side, then slide back to full width, my eyes cry from this flashing everytime I close a tab (I use Opera heavily, searching for any tab after I close one is pain).

    Video: http://www.softpae.com/opera3.mp4

BUG 2 – long long term bug – New tab does not show icon if size of tab is below some threshold, on 1920 wide screen this happen on more than about 320 tabs, tested also on 1600 wide screen, threshold is somewhere about 220 tabs. Tested also on Opera with smaller window size on 1920 screen, working same, so the “key” is size of tab. Icons on this new tabs is not show until I close some tabs to make tabs wider. Old loaded tabs show icons independently on tab size! Only new tabs affected. Old tabs also show icons after Opera relaunch, new tabs never show icons until I close some tabs, so this bug persist between sessions. Video attached, look at right corner for tabs.

    http://www.softpae.com/opera2.mp4

Staying on 39 because of bug 1. My eyes crying, I use tabs very intensive and I have sensitive eyes because of laser eye surgery. So this version is unusable for eye sensitive people. Guys, why have you done this “stupid” animation on tabs?

    • Mikolaj Boc

Hey, sorry for that, 1. is actually a known issue. I’ll take a look at those.

      • Izer0

Please, take a look to 2. issue also, it’s heavy to use opera heavily if you lost any navigation points like icons, even if it is visible only for few pixels, but this few pixels is important. It must be some stupid problem, because icons on first 100 – 200 tabs persist even on browser restart. Icon is loaded, because is displayed when I open any of affected tabs, bud is hidden again after I select another tab. And this happen only on 100 – 200+ tabs, so some stupid error in resize handler… Waiting for very long time to fix this issue…

Update: It is interesting, this icon problem persist even if I copy session file from stable opera to developer, first +-200 tabs display icons, next 160 tabs does not show icons.

  • Why dont go opera to the windows Store whit desktop bridge?

    • Aneta Reluga

Indeed, thanks for the hint. We have to evaluate that.

  • Nekomajin43

Guys, one very important question. Will you remove / make it possible to turn off the reccomended and top50 sections? Those are still spam.

  • Ari

57071 is not resolved on this one, have you got any ETA for it?

Also I don’t get the idea of pop-up video. When I tried it I have to keep the original tab, not being able to close it, and it consumes double CPU since both original tab video and popup video are played.

  • Nashuim

I’m having problems with image popup in this version. All pop ups, no matter the size or website origin have huge horizontal black bars. Example from the video in this post: http://i.imgur.com/VpzM1ll.png

    • RafaellaG

I think, it’s because the pop-up is in a 4:3 window rather than 16:9 as the actual movie scene.
      On a 16:9 monitor that’s quite a little disappointing.

      • Nashuim

What do you mean by a 4:3 window? I have a 16:9 monitor. I’ve also tried this on different computers with 2 different OS (Windows 8 and 10)

        • Ari

Yeah I’ve tried it, it’s really annoying. Different videos and monitors still huge black bars. W8.1

          • Nashuim

Glad I’m not the only one. I’m guessing that this will go to stable like this with the attention Opera is giving

Scrolling in the Speed Dial is very choppy. Repaints do not seem to be hardware accelerated. Affects also modal windows: https://jsfiddle.net/winblood/ovr1xmj8/1/
Of course, you have to maximize the preview window.

  • iVarun

Having black screen in tabs with youtube videos and HW on. Something is definitely not right. Had the same thing on http://www.avclub.com homepage page.

When HW off things fine. Upgraded from beta 40 to this, x86 Opera builds, Win 10-64 bit.

Webpage scrolling is choppy on my usual sites, like reddit.

When I go to my bookmark bar, open a folder, rightclick a bookmark and then press v (shortcut for delete) Opera crashes (about a sec nothing happens, then the window disappears just to open again after maybe half a sec). If I click instead of pressing v it works as expected.
    Can anyone confirm that?

    • Mikolaj Boc

      Hey Ive, what’s your OS?

I use Linux Mint 17.3 x64 and Opera Beta 41.0.2353.10
I also tried clean installation on Ubuntu Mate 16.04 – still unreachable.

  • cicciazzo

I hate the new “load all tabs gradually”: on slow connections I really want to load tabs only when I click on them! also on metered connections it helps reducing data plan usage. fortunately there is a flag to revert to the old behaviour (please don’t remove the flag in a future release!)

    • oraco

      You are not alone 🙂

  • Gloriam

Looks like you people removed the opera://flag to bring back the old (and much better) news page, this one.. it hasn’t changed at all, in the tab “my sources” it still ends at some point for no reason, I just want my global news about gaming and technology, which you’ve offered for years, it was one of those features that really set Opera apart from other browsers.

Please offer an option to bring it back, this system simply doesn’t work right.

  • EchoFromSpace

Does anyone has the problem where the speed dial extensions only show a blank rectangle?

  • MadEddy

Nice build, it’s very fast compared to latest dev build. Problems of embedded content (captchas, videos) on 4chan seems to be fixed too.

  • oraco

How to stop reloading all tabs from last sesion? I want to reload only the tabs that I click on, like was before update.

    • cicciazzo

there is an opera flag, disable it and restart:
