Today, we want to show you another feature to try out in the developer channel for Opera for computers. It’s a personal news feed, one-stop news tailored just for you – from all over the world, your country, or your favorite news source, just as you like.

sf-personalnews-baner

People really need new tools for news

Reading news is one of the things the web is great for. The number of people looking for online news has been constantly growing during the last years. There is an almost endless amount of news out there, and you only need to find a link to discover new, exciting parts of the web.

Our research in this area found that, while many people love reading news on the web, the amount of news stories could be overwhelming to them. They were truly suffering from information overload. The more news sources people found, the less they felt they were capable of keeping up with the news.

We found out that you are looking for a solution, that:

  • Gathers your favorite sources, and only your favorite sources, in one place.
  • Is clean, minimalistic and readable.
  • Unlike on social networks, allows you to be in charge of what you see in you feed (If there’s anything, you’d like to remove from there, you should be able to do it easily).
  • Displays news on a structured timeline, so it’s easy to go back to stories published earlier.
  • Enables mixing sources from different regions, as many of you read websites in two or even more languages.
  • Is smart enough to automatically include publications you visit frequently.

That’s quite a few expectations, right? But, we found these insights very helpful and began building a news feed solution that matches up to our users’ needs. We started with re-doing what we had – the news feature, previously called Discover. We decided to power it up, adding more personalization, convenient reading and smarter options.

How it works

Today, we can show you the first preview of the personalized news feed, which gives you a quick, organized, clean way of following the freshest stories from the web. To start using it, go to the start page and click the newspaper icon on the left. Opera will show you the suggested list of sources based on your location and your browser history. Your browser history data will be kept locally, so it will not leave your computer (any private browsing is not included, since that browser history is not recorded).

Simply tick the suggested sources that you want to follow in your personal news feed, and untick the ones you don’t want to be included. Click the “Add more” button to add more sources from several categories such as sports, technology or food. You can also mix sources from various countries.

Your personal news feed is structured on a timeline. At the top, you will find the freshest stories, while news published earlier today and yesterday are listed below. You can easily change the way sources are displayed by clicking the icon on the top. Whenever you want to add new sources, just go to the side panel and click “Add sources”.

Share your feedback

As you can see, our personal news feed is much more than just a new incarnation of the previous news feature. It gives you many more personalization options and gathers content for you in a smarter way. It’s a first step towards a better, online news-reading experience.

Please help us improve this feature by sharing your feedback. We are very interested in what you think about this feature.

Browser VPN – the next steps

Thank you very much for your feedback following the latest browser VPN release in the Developer version. We hear it and we value it a lot.

We see three main patterns people would like to use browser VPN for: the full browser level VPN, a separate window (or a tab) and private window. That reflects situations, when we are on a public wifi and we want to protect everything we browse online. Also when you want to access only a few different websites, while keeping your other tabs at full browsing speed. Last but not least, when you want to enhance your external privacy, not only clear local traces (history and cookies). So we are going to polish the first and third use cases a little bit more to provide rock solid quality. However, we need to admit that current Blink implementation has too many assumptions about how regular window and private window work, so the second scenario will require additional effort.

Please keep providing us your feedback, so we can improve our product.

  • L33t4opera

Hi Maciej, nice article, thanks for the update and fixes 😉

    • You’re welcome 🙂

    • Vux777

passwords import/export flag is also new
or did I miss that in some previous builds?

      • L33t4opera

Hi Vux777, you’re right, this is new flag, introduced in this build, but to be able to see import/export options under “Manage saved passwords”, you need to select “Enabled” from the drop-down under the flag, and restart the Opera.

  • Zin

Great for lovers of news but the old features of Opera 12 back on newer Opera would be REALLY welcome, i doubt someone would diss that. 😉

    • Luca

I am also using Opera 12 for the news, and it is becoming quite rusty.
A pure RSS reader, without recommendation engine (or maybe used to divide the news in “interesting for you” and “other”), would be excellent.

      • Vux777

there’s old school RSS reader in extension catalog
        works great

        • Luca

I would still prefer something integrated in the browser, but it looks better than other RSS readers that I tried, and I will probably start to use it.
          Thanks!

          • Herr Pietrus

It’s fantastic and should be the part of Opera browser.

  • Nachiketa Ramesh

Just to clarify, the sources are the subset of sources automatically used previously in discover right? And if you happen to visit one, Opera will suggest it. Or is there some kind of RSS support?

    • Yes, we’re letting users to choose from the discover sources (around 10k individual sources). It’s not a regular RSS reader, but gives quite a lot of things to follow. Automatic recommendation checks whether you tend to visit some of the sites often and if that’s in discover catalog, browser would suggest it.

      • Nekomajin43

So you do the magic solution way again, instead of the simple and easy way, what we want.

  • Ghirahim

Still sluggish scrolling with (native) ad-block enabled.

  • All I want about news is make it sync with feedly :v

  • Backspace key stopped working as a “go to previous page” alternative.

    • NoName

      Confirmed on Win10

Edit: It was missing in the shortcut settings. Works after adding it again.

    • Aneta Reluga

Yes, this is a Chromium engine change. Apparently, not only a subset of our users wanted to have it removed. 🙂

      • Matheus Bombonato

I hope this is not a final decision. I use it a lot.

        • Aneta Reluga

This is probably doable (requiring to implement the code in our own resources) but personally I don’t know yet if it will be re-implemented.

          • It’s definitely doable 🙂 I always use keyboard for backward navigation on my notebook and I prefer Backspace (only a small move with my pinky) over Alt+Left (requires two thumbs). And after the 10th or 20th Backspace Backspace Backspace Backspace doh Alt+Left sequence in the last hour I added a small content script to my “Fix what Opera developers broke and there is no chance to be resolved in the near future” personal use extension.

          • Matheus Bombonato

@anet_qa:disqus It seems the Chromium project has a flag for that. Please, bring this flag to Opera too 🙂

            https://codereview.chromium.org/1854963002/#ps40001

          • Leonardo Gomes

Flags are mean to enable /disable experiments, so even if Opera had a flag for that, it would be a temporary solution.

      • Cryio

Such a horrible change. We need delete to work as a Back button 🙁

      • pauloaguia

I’d like to join the chorus of people who would like to have back the Backspace key as a back shortcut. Such a used feature surely deserves a big key to trigger it, not a key combination…
The only downside I can find to it is when sometimes I’m editing text on a page and something happens that takes the focus away from the text box, I type backspace and I go back to the previous page. But usually I notice that I stopped typing and the odds of it actually happening are so low, that I don’t really think of it as a valid drawback.

So, please, please, bring back the backspace for back 🙂

      • SQL

Just FYI, i also very much like having backspace as a “go to previous page” shortcut. It’s the same as in Windows Explorer (the file manager). So +1 for trying to reintroduce it from me.

    • Cryio

      Whaaaaat ?!

But I use it all the time.

    • L33t4opera

Hi @dqdb:disqus, go to Settings > Browser > Configure Shortcuts (opera:settings/configureCommands) > Back, and re-assign it – as @disqus_3M0bVH90cs:disqus mentioned below, it works wihout a problem also in my case 😉

      • Thanks, it is a clean and simple solution, I’ve solved it in a much harder way 🙂

      • Der Herr Nick

Many thanks! This one drove me crazy.

  • Leonardo Gomes

There are any chances of adding own rss feeds in the future?

    • NoName

It seems to already works with RSS feeds.
It fetches from those sides that publishes one.

But yea, would be nice to add custom RSS feeds, in case it’s not available from a website.

      • Leonardo Gomes

Yep, that was what i mean: add custom rss feeds. Currently it seems to get data only from some pre-defined list of sources.

It would be nice to be able to add rss from a forum or blog that i follow for example.

        • Aneta Reluga

At the moment the internal custom RSS fate is not defined.

          • Nekomajin43

Any explanation? The whole feature is useless if we can’t add ANY site that provides a news feed. You can build any algorithm, you will never be able to include small blogs and localized content.

          • Aneta Reluga

The only knowledge I have for now is that we have limited resources (in various meanings) and things are being researched and implementing according to their priority. Specifically, RSS is considered meaningful, because a lot of users are asking for it, and when I asked around, I didn’t get a “no” regarding the implementation, but not a definite “yes” either. I know it is not the answer you would expect, but at the moment I don’t have a better one. 🙁

          • Nekomajin43

It’s OK, but it would have been much easier to build an RSS reader, instead of this whole history analizing stuff you’ve been working for months. The RSS reader is in the top10 requests since the engine change.

          • Aneta Reluga

I can only hope for you and other users that, after Kornelia and I gather the feedback at the end of the day and forward it further, the RSS reader is going to get a bump in priorities.

    • Raylan Givens

Forget RSS. Why should we start bloating again the browser. RSS is thing of the past. The less the better. Only useful features that the vast majority would approve, like Native Ad Blocker.

Also, let us modify Mouse Gestures into our own liking. That’s it. Only security and speed improvements from now on, and of course native x64 for Windows 10 x64 ( the only reason I use Opera Dev ).

      • Leonardo Gomes

Well, i think that RSS is still widely used.

And including the possibility to add custom rss feeds would only improve a feature already included on the browser, so it would not being bloated.

  • Trevor Gough

I don’t see a single conservative news site on your list of news sites. The bias still exists. I will stick with a RSS newsreader like Feedly to customize and view my news. I really don’t understand this desire to push news from only certain sites unless there is some sort of agenda or inherit bias within. It makes Opera look less than fair-minded, to me.

    • Vux777

yea…there’s gay/hippie/liberal conspiracy against “good” ppl
      🙂
      btw. there’s fox sports
but only for Aussies and Asians
      bummer ha?

      • Trevor Gough

        Hi Vux777,
I really like your sidebar extensions. Great work there!

As for the topic at hand here, Opera’s news sources will currently never link to this news source which is playing a video that is going viral in Europe, but doesn’t fit the bent of the current news sources that Opera is offering:

        http://www.breitbart.com/london/2015/11/11/watch-anti-migrant-video-going-viral-across-europe/

All the best to you. 🙂

        • Vux777

          Hi Trevor
          tnx for comment about extensions

on topic, and on serous note:
I don’t really know does Opera avoids conservative medias or not, but if it does, it’s probably because Opera is international company and trying to be “politically correct” in broad meaning
Opera have users from Russia, Ukraine, USA, Middle East countries, Asia… etc, and serving conservative medias, that are usually more radical in their political stands, could create conflict with “other side”, whatever or whoever that is…

          I’m just guessing, ofc

    • Aneta Reluga

To put it mildly: as far as I’m concerned, there are algorithms which take various factors into account, including popularity, shareability etc. So, the answer would be: probably the sites on your mind are too unpopular to get to your feed. Still, with the personalized news, you can configure your feed with as many sites of any kind as you like.

      • Nekomajin43

Tell me how can I add my favourite hungarian news sources! 🙂

        • xirit64

Indeed for many people this feature is useless as there are too many countries missing and that is happening for a very long time.

        • Aneta Reluga

But, but… you’d like the popular ones, or the conservative ones? 😉
Jokes aside, the article base currently gathers info from about ten thousand sources from around the world, and it is fluctuant. I have no info though as of adding other languages at the moment.

          • Nekomajin43

That’s the point. I know that Hungary is not the biggest userbase for you, but there are several languages missing from the selection.

          • Aneta Reluga

I already gathered the feedback (at the moment concerning Hungary and Romania from the comments here) and I’m going to forward it at the end of the day.

          • xirit64

Lol seriously? That’s the way you ‘re going to plan this, by 2 guys in a blog forum? So I’m from Switzerland then and my wife is of another -also not included in the country list- nationality but it would be too much revealing more personal data wouldn’t it? Please start including the remaining european countries, half of Europe is missing already 🙂

      • Trevor Gough

In the USA, Fox News is much more watched than is CNN, but you have no Fox News selection available. So, your thought process does not seem to hold here.

        • Herr Pietrus

          Strange. 🙂

In Poland for example funny news form niezależna.pl (some kind of our local Fox 😛 or even worse!) are visible on the news site from the beginning 🙂

      • Trevor Gough

Also, in the USA the DrudgeReport website is immensely popular and has a newfeed for it, but again Opera gives no option for it in its news sources.

  • Cryio

I don’t know what’s happening to Opera lately. For the last few versions, they’ve been giving us feature after feature after feature. It’s like they actually want now to show us their skills as programmers and engineers.

I can remember the days of Opera 15-25, when almost nothing was happening.

    • Leonardo Gomes

They couldn’t start adding features without having sedimented the base before.
Now that the base is solid and consolidated, they can focus more on features.

    • Herr Pietrus

      cheap Chinese workers… 😛

  • Alex Wazovskiy

I think, custom RSS subscriptions will be a great addition to the new personal news feed. Personally, I don’t using news feed in Opera, but with mentioned feature I will read it 🙂

  • pauloaguia

I like to keep up with astronomy news. There is not a single site on the suggested ones that focuses on astronomy, I always have to dig through the “other” news to find the ones I’m interested on.
I’m not asking to add an astronomy site to the list of available sources – you’d have to add a cooking site, a gay site, a mothers and babies site, etc… I think the only way to solve this problem is to let people actually select what sites they want their content to come from (via custom RSS feed selection, for instance).

Old Opera let me do that and nowadays that’s one of the few features I still miss the most (I forgot most of the others. But every time I have to add a new RSS feed to feedly, I recall how much easier it was to do in Opera by clicking the RSS button).

P.S: I do know of the RSS extension… but in this day and age of multiple devices, I still value feedly’s integration bewteen devices (not having to read the same thing everywhere) more than the ease to add content 😛 and truth is, even old Opera didn’t have that

  • RafaellaG

    Thank you for #adblocker-phase3.

But would you please tell us if when opera:flags#adblocker-phase3 is enabled
we have to simply include the url of the filter list site (like https://easylist.github.io/easylist/fanboy-annoyance.txt) in the “custom block lists…” and if it loads every time we open Opera the newest version from that site; or what we have do to include and update the filter list?

    • Wando Schneider

      They’ll 😀

    • BK

Oh, you always have to be ahead 🙂
Basically yes, the plan is to have automatically updated adblock lists from the web source.
Please wait until the next dev build update for more updates.

      • RafaellaG

        Thanks.

Btw. If one has the option to enable a flag to use a feature, why not use it if it’s stable enough and can improve the work with this browser? 🙂

        • BK

Feature flag is sort of internal thing to play with. We enable it per given channel once QA’s, product managers & co decide that the feature is good to go for given channel.
In our case, we are not there yet.

          • RafaellaG

            Hm…
Then maybe you should make it impossible for us to change them ourself, if you don’t like that we play around with and ask questions about them.^^

Btw. I had only ONCE problems in my entire experience with playing around with them. So either they are mostly stable already, I am very careful or simply lucky 😉

      • Nekomajin43

        Thank you for this feature!

      • qwerzaq

I thank you also expect that it will be possible to import lists from this site link : https: //adblockplus.org/ru/sub …
and manual override , block element of advertising on the site manually
I export these lists uBlock Origin but they do not work in Opera AdBlock why ?
        http://pixs.ru/showimage/1234png_3345513_22010619.png

        http://pixs.ru/showimage/1234png_3345513_22010619.png

  • Ralf Brinkmann

    – Opera doesn’t play flash videos anymore: “Couldn’t load plugin”. The last developer and the beta from yesterday did.
    – Opera still wants to be standard program for all PDF files on my computer. A browser is a browser is a browser is a broswer, especially when I have deactivated all PDF plugins.

    W10x64
    Opera x64 (standalone)

Edit: I had the flag opera://flags/?search=ppapi#enable-ppapi-win32k-lockdown set to “all plugins” (what worked all the time). Now I changed it to “Standard” and the videos play. I don’t know what “Standard” includes.

    • BK

thanks for edit. All works here in default setup, also win 10.

      • Ralf Brinkmann

I have tried again now and I can repeat this behaviour.
        The flags I have changed:

        opera://flags/#browser-vpn = activated
        opera://flags/#forced-default-browser-prompt = activated
        opera://flags/#hide-sync-login-button = deactivated
        opera://flags/#other-webui-new-layout = deactivated
        opera://flags/#prompt-on-risky-download = deactivated
        opera://flags/#rate-opera = deactivated
        opera://flags/#smooth-scrolling = deactivated
        opera://flags/#save-page-as-mhtml = activated
        opera://flags/#enable-ppapi-win32k-lockdown = all plug-ins

And please can you explain to us what the last flag means? What means “Standard”?

  • NEO

The personalized news feed icon don’t shows up here

    • BK

Do you have news on start page? Try to turn them off.

    • Omar

I got the same problem. I just updated and the icon doesnt appear

    • L33t4opera

Hi @RockUndead:disqus @Omar:disqus, it’s disabled by default, go to opera:flags#personal-news, select “Enabled” from the drop-down, and press “Relaunch Now”, and then disable News on SD in “Customize start page”, and click on the News button in the Navigation panel 😉

  • Alexander

Please make ability to run Private mode in “new tab” not just new window.

    • Aneta Reluga

It’s going to be rather hard due to Chromium/Blink restrictions regarding window and tab management.

      • Nekomajin43

Maybe it is time for some structural modifications in the engine.

        • Aneta Reluga

Personally, I’m all for trying out new things, but it’s not up to me to decide, neither do I have any authority to allocate (limited) resources.

  • LoverOfLife

When you will add more countries (languages) ? Ex. Romania

  • Epyon

I just want you guys to fix the unstable downloads. Like: 0~64~0~234~0~313~0~64~0~64~0kbps
C’mon… Some of them even crash.

  • Tomasz Targiel

I have problem with Opera VPN. Everytime I click [VPN] button in private window the pop-up menu says: Connecting… (but it doesn’t connect). Is there any way to repair it?
P.S. Before update I was connecting easily to VPN in non-priv window.
P.P.S. Issue still exist for me in dev. 39.0.2234.0.

    • Ariane Lu

      Same issue, reported.

      • Aneta Reluga

        Indeed, DNA-54512

      • Hi, can you tell us if you use antivirus and if so which version ? Regs, Jakub

        • Ariane Lu

No antivirus software enabled, just because some website resolved 127.0.0.1 to local.example.com for connect client to get who is logged in.

        • Ariane Lu

No antivirus software enabled, except Windows Defender, last comment is not reply to you, ignore it 🙂

    • Hi, do you use antivirus and if so which version ? Regs, Jakub

      • Tomasz Targiel

I use Avast FA 11.2.2262 and the newest dev. Opera.
EDIT: With Antivirus disabled VPN works correctly.

  • icetom

“Automatic recommendation checks whether you tend to visit some of the sites often and if that’s in discover catalog, browser would suggest it.”

that means that it hinders people from reading new sources. people get feeded what they already like – also political views – , its what facebook does.

also i still have privacy questions, i dont trust that you dont give away our history. speed-dial also links us via referral, so you have much of our history anyway.
and the vpn is used to gather information and profiles for the price of beeing “free to use”, overall i think this is hypocritical. Everyone who reads more about Opera knows that you have advertisement-networks. And your opera Android browser uses Admarvel, facebook audience for advertisement marketing.

    • helsten2

If you think there are problems, then you don’t use Opera. It’s your choice… right?

    • Henrik Qvigstad

Hi, trust issues can not be overcome by a reply to a comment. That said, i’m a dev. working on #personal-news. This is not the first iteration of ‘personalized news’ internally. The previous (experimental) iteration would ask for permission to send a condensed history to our servers. This iteration was re-designed from the start to not have to ask by not sending anything about your history. We match your history with the source catalog locally, without sending anything to our servers.

  • Vlad Violenty

Please, fix newspages on FullHD Display. Add support “News by list”, like is bookmarks
    http://i.imgur.com/0cUgksQ.jpg

    Example of news: http://i.imgur.com/ZJ5kwgG.png

    • Leonardo Gomes

What is wrong with news page in full HD? I have a full HD monitor and news page seems OK.

    • Henrik Qvigstad

Hey, thanks for the feedback. Your screen-shots highlight allot, some of which are already addressed, and some of which we have to look into. Can you please elaborate on what you mean by ‘Add support “News by list.”? Would you like 26px tall text only entries?

  • aventacron

Flash doesn’t work now. Instead stupid “update flash” text link appers, which leads to Adobe Flash download site.
Had to revert to 39.0.2226.0 version.
    Windows 7 x64, latest updates.
    Opera 32-bit version.

    • Ralf Brinkmann

Would you please have a look at opera://flags/?search=ppap#enable-ppapi-win32k-lockdown: What does it show? Which version of Adobe Flash have you installed? What does opera:plugins say about flash?

      • aventacron

        opera://flags/?search=ppap#enable-ppapi-win32k-lockdown is “default”
Adobe flash is 21.0.0.197 as it dispalys on opera://plugins/ page.
        Other info at this page:
        Shockwave Flash 21.0 r0
        C:WindowsSysWOW64MacromedFlashpepflashplayer32_21_0_0_197.dll
        PPAPI

        • Ralf Brinkmann

The plugin page sounds normal, but your flash version is old. You should go to https://www.adobe.com/de/software/flash/about/ and update.

          • aventacron

            Thanks!
I’ve got used that Chrome updated Flash automatically alongside with its own updates. Thought Opera does the same.

  • GDanger

It would be very nice, if the news could import my OPML feed I have. Sure it is RSS/Atom feeds, but it would mean I could move full-time to Opera

  • RafaellaG

I already ask in beta channel but would like to ask here too:

Is it possible to include the possibility to set the power save button to “always on” (and not to manually activate it every time the browser starts) and does the power saver feature also save power/lower the cpu utilization on normal desktop pc’s?

    • Kornelia

      I’ll post your suggestion.

    • Paweł Miniewicz

      Hi @disqus_RafaellaG:disqus!
Good point. We are now discussing your feedback and most likely automation will land in 39 development cycle.
Power Saving works on destkop PCs too, so you can enable “Always show power saving icon” in Preferences, turn it on and enjoy cooler, more eco-friendly PC 🙂

  • senna_4ever

if i could add my RSS feeds would be better

  • Herr Pietrus

Is there any way to see the full address of the source?
And will be there a possibility to display all these news from all chosen sources on the SD page?

    • Kornelia

We have delivered first version of personal news feature and we’re getting feedback. “Nothing is in stone yet”

    • Henrik Qvigstad

Hey, the sources in #personal-news most often have a one-to-one relationship with a RSS/Atom feed, but not always. Even when that is the case, our back-end does allot of work between the feed and the source as we present it in our #personal-news feature. Therefore, there is not always a clear answer to what the full address of a source is, or if it has much resemblance to the source as we present it.

I cannot promise anything, but several of us at opera would love to bring this #personal-news to the startpage.

      • Herr Pietrus

“I cannot promise anything, but several of us at opera would love to bring this #personal-news to the startpage.”

Great news 😉 I hope you’ll manage to do it.

      • Leonardo Gomes

The possibility to have personal news on start page together with the possibility to add custom RSS feeds would be great.

  • Herr Pietrus

oh, one more thing? how long the old news from the “history” will be displayed?

    • Henrik Qvigstad

Hey, I’m the dev. working on the interaction between the the history and the new #personal-news feature, as well as the opera:history UI. I would like to provide you with an answer, but I’m having trouble understanding what you are asking. Could you please be more specific and/or rephrase? Are you speaking about history in relation to #personal-news or opera:history?

  • mm utoo

It would be great if we could our own RSS feed. Right now I use inoreader mainly because it is available on mobile platform too. A feed reader in both opera desktop and mobile would be great. Also, the ad blocking capability would be amazing on mobile.

  • If you click the relaunch button in the notification on OS X 10.11.5, Opera developer loses all of open tabs and windows on relaunch

    • Kornelia

I couldn’t reproduce that on my MacBook. Both clicking on notification dialog and relaunch button on opera://about page restarts Opera and continuing where I left off. Are you sure you didn’t change startup settings?

      • The relaunch button showed before the rest of the Opera developer windows loaded, I did not see opera://about yet, I clicked on the OS X notification from Opera developer

      • Yep, been carrying on tabs & windows, since the very first Opera developer public builds (was around Opera 10 if I recall right)

  • ThanhLiem

Not relate to this article, but Opera browser wastes a long time to activate the Power Save Mode. you should shorten it within 5 mins or less.

    • Kornelia

What do you mean by “activate the Power Save Mode”?

      • ThanhLiem

I mean “power saver” feature of browser when running on battery.

        • Paweł Miniewicz

You can enable Power Saving at any time by clicking on the battery icon and flipping the switch. It takes faction of the second to turn on 🙂
I think you might mean the notification informing you about new feature. Indeed we show it with some delay after you have unplugged. If that is the case, I agree with you – we are considering displaying it right away.

          • ThanhLiem

            Got it.Thanks for your reply

          • Nekomajin43

Also, would you consider changing the toolbar icon to fit better into the GUI? The lines are too thin.

  • >However, we need to admit that current Blink implementation has too many >assumptions about how regular window and private window work, so the second >scenario will require additional effort.

This is valuable information. This is the type of stuff you guys need to tell us whenever it is the case. I think it’s a good approach that will help us (users) manage our expectations. So thank you for that.

EDIT: By the way, guys please, make the video pop-up icon disappear once you move the mouse away from the video. It’s so annoying waiting for it to go away.

  • pauloaguia

Whenever I Ctril+Click on a link on an image it is not opening on a new Tab. It still works on regular links. It’s very annoying, because I don’t even have an alternative – if I right click on the image, what I get is the image context menu, not the link context menu. So it doesn’t show me the option to open the link on a new tab…

    • Kornelia

I checked Win7 and Win10 and cannot reproduce this issue. What’s your operating system?

      • pauloaguia

W7, but after some more testing, that is not the issue. It seems to be site specific: https://www.tiendanimal.pt/summum-c-1_25_437.html
The HTML is strange, in that the a tag is after the img tag… (oddly enough, it works!) in retrospect, there are some changes to the website since I last visited, maybe it’s something they changed recently… I’ll take it up to them.

I should have checked against previous versions of Opera before posting, the behavior is similar there too… sorry for the false alarm.

        • Kornelia

No problem. Never too much testing 😉

    • Ralf Brinkmann

Here it works as it should.
      W10x64
      Opera x64

  • Heinz Witt

Why are the windows 64 bit builds actually still called experimental? The work here flawlessly!

    • NoName

We don’t always see a 64bit build, so while it might seem perfect when it’s out, it’s obvious that the developers is fighting behind the scenes with it 🙂

  • Ralf Brinkmann

Oh, come oooooon: “Load Facebook, 8,1”

    • Kornelia

      Hey Ralf, no problem here…

      • Ralf Brinkmann

Maybe you must open more than 1 tab, I don’t know. I have mostly around 30 tabs open. When I scroll in Facebook, it stops after some lines (sometimes) or pages and I have to wait until I can go on. Videos mostly stop playing after about 0:45 – 1:30 minutes, but only the video part, the sound goes on. So picture and sound are not synchronous anymore. And so on and so on. And like João Gonçalves already said, this version is a bit slow everywhere.

        • Aneta Reluga

Is it as bad when you temporarily disable adblocking? Sorry but we have to rely on your help.

          • Ralf Brinkmann

Thank you for your answer, Aneta. It can take a while, I have to watch it. There are so many little switches which can cause a big thing. Yesterday I had a big crash that blocked the whole computer. I had to switch it off the hard way. After a restart Opera opened with a new, empty profile and I had to copy an “old” backup (2 days old). I don’t know if it was caused by Opera or anything else. At this moment everything seems to run smoothly. So let’s see what will happen the next days.

          • Ralf Brinkmann

Aneta, I think you are right. It looks as if embedded videos in Facebook always struggle or stop after a while when my adblocker (uBlock origin) is enabled. I have not tried the build in adblocker. Sometimes the picture of the videos stop for some seconds, while the sound is going on, sometimes the whole video is simply stopped. Also in the new developer 39.0.2245.0.

  • Юлия

Opera developer Internet Browser has stopped working

I get this very often, especially on cold startup as I noticed. Sometimes when I open Opera it crashes like 3 or 4 times, then it starts. Some other times it crashes on close (not much of a big deal in this case, it keeps my session, just an extra click).

This crashes started like a couple of months ago, just before x64 builds were introduced. So it happens on both x86 and x64. I don’t know if it happens on Beta or Stable as I don’t use them. I’m fine with it, I use Devedition, but just a heads up so you don’t port this to Stable as well.

This particular x64 build crashed twice since yesterday when I closed one tab (with click 3 from tab bar) which is something new.
Everything is disabled: VPN, AdBlock, News, and the only extension that I use is uBlockOrigin. Also it is a portable installation.

  • kristy

DNA-53282 is a very important bug that needs fixing!

    • Aneta Reluga

Thanks. AFAIK it is in progress with no ETA.

    • BK

      Thanks for pointing this out.

  • Vux777

    1) news page doesn’t load more when scrolled to the bottom in grid mode (works fine in list mode)
    2) previously, clicked news were grayed,… not anymore

  • João Gonçalves

This version is slow as hell! Totally unusable for me! Until the tab loads completely, Opera simply freezes. I cannot click or scroll anything until the tab loads completely. This just started happening in this snapshot.

    • redfox

Use v38, 39 is not good.

      • João Gonçalves

True, but if I go back, everytime I restart Opera, it updates itself!

        • redfox

You can block the autoupdate in your firewall. Opera itself has no option to turn it off.

          • João Gonçalves

Can you please explain me how? I sincerely don’t know how to do it and would love to stay in a particular older version for now. Which files or files do I have to block?

          • redfox

Block outgoing connections to port 80 for the process opera_autoupdate.exe

          • João Gonçalves

            Thank you so much!

          • João Gonçalves

Where is that lovely file located? So I can block it. I can’t seem to find it.

          • Henrik Qvigstad

You can run opera with the following flag:
            –disable-update
If you prefer to use 38, i would use the beta channel.

          • redfox

I think that Opera 38 Beta stil does not have the VPN enabled. Waiting for O38 Final.

          • L33t4opera

Hi Redfox, the VPN works quite well in the latest Opera beta, but it’s disabled by default, so one need to enable it in opera:flags#browser-vpn, and restart the Opera 😉

          • redfox

But only in private windows? Not like in the v38.0.2213.0

          • mikemanger

This is horrible advise, switch to using the Opera stable if you don’t want any bugs. Or beta if you want new features but don’t mind some issues. Developer has new features with bugs.

I wish they did a better job of advertising this (not doing big press releases about a developer version is probably the only way).

    • Kai Ockendorf

so, this is a call to the developers: don’t forget to focus on speed!! We need speed aswell 🙂 thank you!

    • Aneta Reluga

The same question I already asked Ralf please: when you temporarily disable adblocking, does it behave better, or is it equally bad? Thanks.

      • João Gonçalves

I have Opera’s native adblocking disabled since its introduction because I have Adblock Plus intalled.

        • Aneta Reluga

Ok. We have a known issue related to general slowness due to ABP, already reported. If you temporarily disable your ABP and see if it improves things for you, then we have backed this up also from your side.

          • João Gonçalves

Yes, I confirm. As soon as I disable ABP, smooth as butter again.

          • Aneta Reluga

            Thanks!

  • Jason Coplen

Is there any way to gain more control over the newsfeed on a new tab? Using Huffpost for health is like saying naturalnews is scientific.

  • Pushkar Gogte

Why the VPN does not work when cyberoam firewall is on?

  • Windsong

The use instructions in this article are incomplete. Newpaper Icon on side does not appear by default. First you must goto Opera://flags and search news then enable display news icon. Then you must uncheck News in custom speed dial setting gear icon on left of speed dial page, then news paper icon will be added to left side bar.

  • Windsong

I would like to be able to add Personal rrs news feed addresses to the list manually. as it is developed News does not alway locate new newsfeeds from the history of going to the website page.

    • Wraith

I agree, in my personal case “News” only showed me one site from several that I follow through rss feed, a lot of sites are not listed through the default source. So that’s why I don’t waste time with News and I will continuing using Feedly.

  • redfox

Regarding VPN, I get again numerous login popups like “its needed to login with de120.opera-proxy.net:443”, or de140 etc. What’s wrong with the proxy servers??
    Opera dev 38.0.2213.0 32bit/Win7

  • John Doe

    1. News. What I want is a kind of fully customizable aggregation something with the ability to choose my sources. Not making me choose from a limited list of sources somebody chose for me. Not putting me in a situation where I have to choose between “Trump” and “Hillary” – it’s like giving me two ice-cream corns filled with two kinds of frozen crap and saying that I need to choose one to eat. I need control. And I don’t understand why you make news-feed design kind of tablet-oriented – I don’t need big square pics, I need more text and context.

    • Tommy Wille

Frozen crap. 🙂 But yeah, I kinda agree, especially about the pictures.

  • John Doe

    2. VPN. It would be nice at least to have a (global) VPN on-off button somewhere near, without the need to open private window. And it would be better to have per-tab VPN button, so that these tabs would be VPN’ed (but not in private browsing mode). AND the private window tabs – why are you making them VPN’ed by default?

  • taneli

The VPN was better the way it was in the first place, available for normal browsing.
Also, since the last update the VPN won’t connect anywhere, so, cannot browse if it’s on since no connection.

    Win8.1×64.

    • Vague Rant

I’m having the same issue on Win10x32. Attempting to load a page using the VPN results in a standard error:
The webpage at https://youtube.com/ might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address.
The VPN badge turns blue to say it has connected, but once I attempt to use it and see the above error, it turns back to orange and claims to be “Connecting…”

  • Dmitry Kirin

Thanks for x64 and news improvements! I’m not using News yet, and here’s what I’m missing:
    1. Adding my own news sources.
You wrote earlier that the current list of sources was formed from news people had clicked most. It’s quite a logical thing to do, but only in absence of more meaningful ways. It wouldn’t give us a lot of great sites. The current choice looks good at first glance. However, Vivaldi’s pre-installed bookmarks look much more tastefully selected. I guess the reason is selection by experts instead of leaving it up to statistics.

    2. Easy adding of the most typical news sources and common blog platforms.
Most of my own news feed sources are blogs at livejournal.com. It would be great if the news engine could add them by specifying them by username. The example is how LiveJournal accepts comments: it allows to choose most popular sources of web identification.
2b. Facebook as a source would be great. However, they would probably ban Opera for that, as that would undermine their whole idea of pushing the news they want instead of which the user would prefer. 🙂

    3. Group sources into folders.
My news sources are organised in 3-5 main folders: most important, science, people, humour, etc.
Your grouping by domains is great, keep it.

    4. Show the number of new/unread news articles or paint the read gray.
Outlook shows numbers of unread news articles in each RSS feed. It helps to narrow down the news display.

    5. Show site favicons in news source selection lists.

  • Dmitry Kirin

    6. There are three levels of news detail I’m used to seeing in my news feed:
    – article header, for display on the news feed (you have it);
    – full article in place: in the same news page, extend the article div to show its full contents (only rich text and images, no html layout or Flash).
    – full article at the source – by clicking the article and opening it in a new page (you have it).
The second one would be great. It would minimise the difference in the user behaviour with fully shown articles and those that turned out to be longer and have been cut.

    • Aneta Reluga

Thanks a lot for your detailed comments. I’ve added it to the feedback report!

  • redfox

I’d like a RSS reader capable of adding feeds directly from all web pages providing such functionality (like in O12).

  • SGRZ

Opera Team, please implement the feature to open a new tab in the background by changing the settings. It’s really annoying in having to get back to the current tab after clicking on “Open link in new tab”. The old Opera had this feature and I used to love it. I beg you to implement this back 🙂

    • Ralf Brinkmann

Isn’t this standard? I use an extension to open links in new tabs in the foreground and when I switch this extension off, the tab is opened in the background.
      W10x64
      Opera x64

    • pauloaguia

Mine always open in the background too.
If you middle click the link or press Ctrl while clicking it, does it still open in the foreground?
I looked for a flag or a setting that might control this but couldn’t find one. So maybe it’s some extension that’s causing it?

  • Matheus Bitencourt

Would be great to have the “Save offline page” feature in Opera desktop, just like we have in Opera for Android.

    • Leonardo Gomes

Like Menu > Page > Save as?

      • Matheus Bitencourt

No. This doesn’t work properly. Try it and you’ll see that the web page isn’t saved corretly.
You can save pages for reading whenever you’re offline on Opera for Android, all the saved pages are easily found in the Speed Dial. That’s the approach that I’m asking for.

    hello,
VPN (which is only a browser-proxy-‘vpn’) in actual dev (39.0.2234.0)
    (1) does not work on windows10-inside (fault: colour above changes to orange, every server, no connection, see screenshot below)
    (2) does not work on linux mint-mate 17.3 / ubuntu-gnome 14.04 / xubuntu 14.04-5 (same faults as in windows10-inside)
    (3) works only faultily on windows 10

    http://www2.pic-upload.de/img/30724998/ger-n.jpg

and timeouts on win7 (VPN working, but to much “Unauthorized access”) and …
=> seems to be buggy, very! Previous Version (2226) with less faults!

    who shall use that?

    • redfox

The “Unauthorized access” message seems to be independend on a certain Opera version, since you have the same result with O39 like me with 38.0.2213.0.
It is definitely a VPN/proxy server issue.

      • vertebranes

Going back to previous dev (39.0.2226.0), here there are 1. no VPN-probs, 2. no “Unauthorized access” messages.
and yes, apparently Opera has built in some code, which causes this VPN/proxy issues/emergences – nobody knows why…

        • redfox

The v39 is useless, as VPN does not work in normal mode.

        • Aneta Reluga

          Reported now as DNA-54769, thanks.

    • RafaellaG

Here the VPN connects alright (blue) in a private window. But when I try to open a page it changes to (orange) an I get this message – for all web pages, not only the one displayed below (doesn’t matter which virtual location I choose).

      This site can’t be reached

The web page at http://www.heise.de/ might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address.

      German:
      (Diese Website ist nicht erreichbar

Die Webseite unter http://www.heise.de/ ist möglicherweise vorübergehend nicht verfügbar oder wurde dauerhaft an eine neue Webadresse verschoben.)

      Win10 x64 with Opera x64 (39.0.2234.0)

      • vertebranes

yes, any page, the screen ist only ONE example! (w10-inside_14342) 🙂

  • redfox

The German VPN/proxy server 185.108.219.163 again displays only a popup login window, then a message “Unauthorized access.” on a blank page.
    Steps to reproduce:
    1. Select German in the list of VPN servers
    2. If the IP is 185.108.219.163, try to load a webpage
    3. Sometimes, only a popup window “Please, sign in” is displayed, then only blank page with the “Unauthorized access.” message on top.

    Reported as DNA-54685.

A workaround is to switch to a non-German VPN server.

    Opera 38.0.2213.0 / Win7

    • redfox

EDIT: The same result with another German server IP 109.236.92.172.
Either a message “Unauthorized access” or “Proxy Authentication Required”.

  • Ariane Lu

    Ahhhhh?

    https://ooo.0o0.ooo/2016/05/24/57444ac1623cc.png
Are you joking ?? Blocked 10k ADs?

    • yigido

No, it is possible status. Mine blocked 9k.. I will catch you 🙂
There too many invisible trackers advertisers out there.. Thanks to adblockers.

      • Ariane Lu

But… It says “10K On this site”, not total +_=

        • yigido

Can you please put the link of this website? So the devs and users can check

          • Aneta Reluga

I second to that, please post the exact website link.
Also, if the page asynchronously downloads ads on every ‘tick’, the count can probably easily grow into thousands. But to know for sure, we need the link.

          • Dmitry Kirin

Probably, some script is rotating images that get blocked.

I’ve noticed that when I load photos into a Facebook album, the blocked item counter spins fast, approx. +10 after each image has been loaded. Not as fast as 10k per day, though. (To reproduce, one can add photos into a new album. Publishing it isn’t necessary.)

  • João Gonçalves

I’ve added linkdecode.com to the adblocking’s exception list but still some elements are not displayed at all. Just like if the adbloking was still active, even though I’ve disabled it for that site.

    • Ralf Brinkmann

What is it, that you want to see and can’t? I use uBlock origin and everything looks correct. Which blocking lists are you using?

      • João Gonçalves

I don’t have any customs lists. I’ve simply checked the box “Show ads in this website” but somehow, it still blocks some elements.
In particular, it should show a “Download” link that is not displayed.

        • Ralf Brinkmann

Where should this download link be? I also don’t see it, even if I switch all blockers and other extensions off. Not in Opera, in Google Chrome, in Firefox or in Vivaldi. They look all the same.

          • João Gonçalves

            This one, for example:
            http://www.linkdecode.com/?maemoW1hYKieX6ehYKVrq6Kqq2Sc

It should display a “Download” button at the top right corner.

          • Ralf Brinkmann

I don’t see a download button. Should it be in the menu line or above he “Reviews” or where else? Do you have a screenshot?

          • João Gonçalves

Ok, this first screenshot is with adblocking disabled:
            http://tinypic.com/r/1z4a0dd/9

The second screenshot is with adbloking enabled, but disabled for linkdecode.com site:
            http://tinypic.com/r/2dhz0ps/9

So as you can see, I have to completely disable adbloking for it to show all the elements in the page. It’s not enough disabling only for linkdecode.com.

          • Ralf Brinkmann

Ah, now I see. It’s not a “Downlad button”, it’s a “Skip ad button”. 🙂 I don’t see this button, but I also don’t see the warning to disable my adblocker. I have all extensions and blockers including HostsMan disabled and cleared the cache. So at this moment I don’t know why it is not working. Sorry. Maybe anybody else.

          • João Gonçalves

Thank you for your help. I will try to investigate further.
What’s in your opinion the best adblocking extension?
I had Adblock Plus but it puts Opera very slow. I want to try others.

          • Ralf Brinkmann

We all should avoid Adblock Plus and it’s lists. I think, the built in solution is very good and uBlock origin also, but everything depends on the lists you use. Easylist once was good, but now it belongs to Adblock Plus. They sell whitelist entries to everybody who pays enough. If you install uBlock origin and have a look in the settings you will find enough alternative lists which you can use in the built in adblocker of Opera.

          • João Gonçalves

Thank you. I will install uBlock right now to try it.

Is this a bug? I don’t think so.

      • Vlad

This is a features request 😉

        • Leonardo Gomes

So why the bug report ID?

          • Vlad

            Because.

          • Leonardo Gomes

The BTS is to report bugs. You can ask for featrures here or on the forums.

          • Vlad

            I think this is a bug! =P

          • Leonardo Gomes

But it’s not. And you know it. -)

          • Vlad

            I don’t think so.

          • Leonardo Gomes

Jt doesn’t matter what you think or what anyone thinks. There’s a definition of what a bug is.

And this is clearly not a bug.

          • Vlad

            I don’t care =P

          • Leonardo Gomes

If you think you are helping by acting like this, then there’s nothing that can be done.

          • Vlad

            I don’t care =P

          • xirit64

I care for not having to see your spam and arrogant attitude hidden behind smileys so please stop it.

          • Kamen Minkov

The thing is that requesting a feature usually doesn’t do a thing (unless there are a whole bunch of people requesting the same thing – remember Stash in early versions of non-Presto Opera?).

I would, however, file a bug report for something that used to work one way and now works in another way.

          • Leonardo Gomes

The problem is that unfortunately (many)people seem to don’t know how to make a good request or suggestion.

People just come and say “you should do this”, “you should add that” several times, without showing why the request/suggestion should be accepted, how it would benefit the users and things like this.

Just a few seems to try to point some reasons for their requests to be implemented.

    • Aneta Reluga

Good catch. This is the result of the halfway development phase. The current build only saves version 2.0 lists – but there are plans also to include support for earlier lists, starting with Adblock Plus.
As you can see, 3 out of 6 lists included by you are 1.1 version and that’s why not supported yet. Yet.

      • RafaellaG

So, although I have them included, they are ignored completly?
Even if I download them as .txt files and include the locally saved files?

        • Aneta Reluga

In the current O developer version, yes. In the version which supports them, the lists should be downloaded and applied. (At least that’s what I know at this stage.)

  • Kamen Minkov

Can’t drag a tab out to create a new window. OS X 10.11, can’t remember whether this also happens on Windows.

    • Aneta Reluga

Works on Windows for sure, at least for me. Pushing to see on Mac.

      • Kamen Minkov

Yeah, I can confirm that it’s okay on Windows. Now that I checked on OS X, I must have tried dragging a tab from a full screen window (which doesn’t work). It works as intended with a normal (not full screen) window, so my bad (and OS X’s with its silly window management).

There’s another issue that still exists on Windows 10, though, and I don’t know whether it is reported or I should file a bug report.
        Steps to reproduce:
        1. Open an Opera window.
        2. Switch to another virtual desktop.
        3. Click the Opera icon (or press Win + if it’s pinned to the taskbar).

What I expect to happen (and what happened two or three versions ago): Opera should open a new window on the current desktop.

What actually happens: Opera switches to the already open window on the other desktop.

        • Aneta Reluga

We are unable to reproduce your Win10 issue, but I have a few questions to investigate:
          1) What is your exact Win10 version and type? (Regular or insider?)
          2) Do you use the regular virtual desktop option available from within the system, or the one provided by sysinternals?
          3) Have you tried to turn it off and on aga… err, to unpin and pin again?
          4) The “What actually happens” step means that Opera *only* switches to the already open window but *does not* open any new tab in that window?
          Thanks in advance!

          • Kamen Minkov

            1) It’s the latest Insider build: 14342 Pro x64 (installed on top of a previous build). Edit: same thing now with 14352.
            2) Yes, it’s about the regular virtual desktops in Win 10.
            3) Yes, I’ve tried that, no effect. In fact, it’s not just the taskbar icon, it does the same if I open it through the start menu, through Launchy or through a desktop shortcut. So since it does the same thing with a freshly created shortcut, I’d conclude that it’s not about a messed up shortcut.
            4) Indeed, I missed that detail – Opera switches to an already open window and opens a new tab in it.

I’m not sure that this is a change in Opera or in Windows (since I’m constantly updating both), but I can confirm that both Chrome Canary and Vivaldi exhibit the “What I expect to happen” behaviour. So I suspect Opera.

  • So is the take over approved?

  • Eugene B.

Hey devs! Any info about DNA-54194?

    • Leonardo Gomes

      What this one is about?

      • Eugene B.

Summary: The mouse arrow has an hourglass next to it for a long time. Very annoying! 😀

        • Leonardo Gomes

Any special steps to reproduce? I’m not seeing that problem here.

  • I’m on 39.0.2234.0, and the VPN appears not to be working any more. It will show as connected, but as soon as I try to navigate to any website, I get a website not available error, and the VPN button turns orange (connecting)

  • musonic

I’m running 39.0.2234.0 on Mac OS X 10.11.4. The VPN isn’t working at all. The dropdown location menu is empty and the VPN hangs on connecting.

    • Aneta Reluga

Thanks. This one is known, reported, and under investigation. If I may ask though – what country are you located in? We are trying to identify whether it is an internal issue or we are getting blocked area-wide externally, and your info might help.

      • RafaellaG

I have this issue as well in O39 Dev.
Though in O38 Beta it works well.

        So it’s not country-specific – more version/build specific^^

        But for you Information:
        I’m from Germany and working with Win10 x64 & O39 Dev x64.

        • Aneta Reluga

Thanks. We have one upcoming fix at the moment (for a similar issue) and we think it would repair also the endless ‘Connecting’ issue. Please stay tuned for the next week’s dev release.

      • vertebranes

this writing with dev39.0.2234.0 under windows8.1_64, the opera-VPN-bug isn’t country-specific (=> but VPN, server NL, works with win 8.1_64!).
As I wrote 3 days ago, the 39.0.2234 doesn’t work or doesn’t work correct
        1. on windows10-inside-14342 (fault: colour above changes to orange, every server, no connection to ANY site)
        2. on linux mint-mate 17.3 / ubuntu-gnome 14.04 / xubuntu 14.04-5 (same faults as in windows10-inside)
        3. on windows 10-1511 only faultily
there is nothing connected to countries. Caused only by the actual dev; the older dev-version 39.0.2226.0 has a faultless VPN! win + linux!

      • musonic

Been away, only just catching up. I’m in the UK.
Just upgraded to 39.0.2245.0 and the issue still persists…

  • Kurt Zon

Anything new to share with us??

    • Leonardo Gomes

I guess we won’t get anything this week.

      • Ralf Brinkmann

That would not be nice. This week we have so much time to play.

        • Aneta Reluga

          Next week. Promise.

          • Ralf Brinkmann

Ohhh, another weekend only with alcohol and drugs…

      • BK

no worries, most probably incoming early next week:
        – auto update for adblock list from URL
        – vpn in regular opera window
        – more updates to personal news

        • Ralf Brinkmann

If you have so much time for the next update, you can also fix this cr…. download page. TAB TAB ENTER.

          • BK

Hi Rafl, this is tracked as DNA-52409.

          • Steven Ball (Buddy)

Hello I would love to see the status of my favorite part time job.

    • ShintoPlasm

Yes – over 90% of Opera shareholders have agreed to the Chinese takeover. I guess that’s something worth sharing!

  • redfox

Does anybody know, if the VPN function in Opera provides also encrypted DNS resolution? Thanks.

    • redfox

      nobody knows?

      • Kamen Minkov

More like “nobody works on Saturday or Sunday”.

        • redfox

          I do.

          • Kamen Minkov

Yeah, as much as I hate generalisations, I did one here. I really meant “most people don’t work on Saturday or Sunday”, especially folks hired full time in the IT sector.

  • opticyclic

STILL no private tabs and temporary files like Office doc/xls, Citrix ica, Java jnlp etc get save to the Downloads dir instead of the temporary dir!

  • ervan rehanda

I hate downloading files using opera . When the network is busy , often downloading disconnected and can not be resumed . Even printed ‘download is finished ‘ yet unfinished . I hope the opera started to develop features ‘ download accelerator ‘ . I thought IDM can be a good reference .

  • L33t4opera

    New build – Opera developer 39.0.2245.0 😉

  • so the second scenario will require additional effort.

no RSS support? the news feed in the old opera version was way more useful then, I really like this new reader but when you say “gather your favorite sources” err no, my favorite sources are not in your list and I cannot gather them without RSS support

    • Leonardo Gomes

This post is old. Check a newer one.

  • ahsan munim

Hello, I can’t find the “News” on “Start page” anymore …It was really great.i am using the version 42.02374… realy realy missing the “NEWS” on start page..please bring back this…or tell me if there any tweak to bring this option back.. pleasee.

    • bigearth

      they ruined it!

  • bigearth

i preferred the old news style page. having to wade thru all these different news sources to choose what i want to see is taking me ages. it was simpler before where you just had the customise news page and you could select topics and they showed up by default on the start page. that was actually one of the best things i liked about opera and now you’ve removed it.

  • James

    News feed is terrible

  • Ian Gregory Young

Man I actually enjoyed the old system but I’m guessing the servers were getting high traffic from user’s just going to speed dial for their favorites.

  • Rolf Bause

I want the old news feed back, or at least an option for that. It made way more sense right below the top sites imo.

  • Paranam Kid

I need to organise my feeds in folders.

  • Andrejs Suvorovs

Are personal news synced together with bookmarks, settings etc.?

    • Leonardo Gomes

It should be, as far as I know.

  • C. Chaya Khan

How do you remove a news source from your personal feed? I have a button for adding, but don’t see anything for editing or changing.

    • Leonardo Gomes

You can only remove the ones you have added.

  • Jeremiah Atkinson

My newsfeed seems to have a liberal slant everything and I’m getting really sick of it.

  • Enn Pee

It is useful if the browser opens the news within , in READER mode , taking away actual website clutters full of Ads and one click touch / save option to Pocket or other READ LATER apps . Just redirecting to actual website full of clutters of Ads , does not add value to me. I could as well keep the specific website URL in my bookmarks and open as usual, right ? Could you please provide some clean READ mode opening the news within the same browser window ?

  • wenlala wen100

    this new personal news tab
how do I disable it ?
it’s of no use to me and taking my limited connection which is poor at best.
    others may find it useful……

found how to close the links,,,,,,,,,,,,, hover over the small icon (on left side ) and right click mouse and untick which ones. Hopefully that’s enough

  • Justin Rock

The news feed pulls from multiple non news organizations and there seems no way to remove it. Specifically, it seems to pull sensationalized news on both sides of the aisle leaving middle of the road news. Most of the “news” links go to website that are questionably news versus opinion blogs.

  • pastma

how to export personal new feed entries? is there any way to bulk feeds import from “opml” file?

  • tonydeli7

I like this, but I would like as others said to have a reader mode and add rss from sites that are not on the list..
