Today’s beta update is an extra special one, because we have, a surprise, brand-new feature for you to try. This is an exceptional situation since the feature skipped developer, landing straight into beta. In this case, we just couldn’t wait to show it to you, so we’ve shortened our usual development cycle.

Presenting video pop out

So, what is it about?

This feature allows you to shift your video frame to the side of your screen, so that you can truly multitask: browse the comments, look for something in another tab or even prepare a presentation without missing out on the video action. Drag and toss your video around the screen, place it wherever you like, and close it immediately should the need arise.

How do I use it?

Go to a video page, such as YouTube, and run a video. You should see an additional button in the middle of the top border:

Middle Button

Click the button to pop out your video:

Detached Video

The video, of course, has its own controls to use. You can also re-attach the video or immediately dismiss it with one hit of the quick close button in the upper-right corner: this action will also pause the original video.
Video controls

How does it work?

This feature is based on HTML5 technology – we provide the functionality for content embedded in the <video> tag. This means that (hopefully) soon-to-be deprecated plug-in-based technologies, such as Flash or Silverlight, are not supported.

Caveats?

Yup, a few. The video control is still undergoing intense development, and we would like to use your help to improve this feature. So, whenever you spot a bug, or simply have an idea for how we could do things better– please let us know in the comments! We know that at least resizing of the video window is tricky. Can you find more problems?

Other updates and fixes

  1. As SPDY (open networking protocol for transporting web content) is going to be deprecated soon, we’ve switched our implementation of Turbo 2 to HTTP/2. This should be transparent to the end user, but we thought we should mention it.
  2. We have applied further optimizations to our ad blocker. The memory consumption has been significantly reduced.
  3. Language selection in the spellchecker now works correctly.
  4. The “Adjust Speed Dial animations for slower hardware” setting was selected, but not respected by Opera after a restart. This is now fixed.
  5. We have also fixed the Win10 Opera Menu icon color – now it’s red.

Hi Aneta, thanks for the update and fixes, the video pop out – nice surprise, I like it! 😉

    • nanana1

This Beta build actually broke the Opera tradition with the introduction of a new feature not tested in any previous Developer builds.

Must have been compelling to do this video pop out in these Beta builds.

      • BK

Indeed we broke the tradition 🙂

      • BK

        I warned you can expect surprises, didn’t I ? 😉

      • L33t4opera

Yes, it’s “hidden” by the opera:flags#media-detachable-view, which is not present in the latest OPD38 😉

  • Petras Sukys

Why Developer version is not getting video pop out feature? I was using developer version since it started to have all the newest features with all the hiccups tagging along. And now I do not get a feature which would dramatically increase productivity? I am disappointed 🙁 I do not want to install Beta/Regular versions alongside Developer… Please, issue an update to Developer with video pop out feature.

    • Aneta Reluga

Thank you for your good opinion about video pop out! To address your disappointment regarding developer, I just wanted to sort of repeat what was already stated in the blog note – we like the feature a lot and want it to make it to Stable as soon as possible, and the development was really rapid for this one.

      • Petras Sukys

I understand the motivation behind puting it in Beta from the start, but will it ever be included in Developer stream? 🙂

        • BK

Next week with next developer build update.

          • Petras Sukys

            Thank you! Looking forward! 🙂

      • x a

Not that it mattered much, but do you have data about the cardinality of the respective audience for beta vs. dev?

I’d be surprised, if there were more beta users than dev users. The usual number of comments below blog entries for beta compared with those to developer versions seems to support my impression, that Opera users tend to either use stable, or developer, but not least exciting beta (a passionate minority might test each edition)…

So one might be tempted to think, it’s not so much about a wider testing spectrum than it is about outracing competitors?

        • Aneta Reluga

First of all, developer is also getting the feature; obvious since it’s 38 and we want to have the video pop out for 37 (and 38, 39 etc.). Look out for the next week’s release.
Now, on to address your questions about audience. Both user groups, even though they differ in both the size and the approach, are equally important. The thing is – if we want the feature for 37, and want it quick, we just had to get it to beta. Developer is v38 already, and it would mean the feature would be delivered weeks later.

          • x a

            I’m patient, no worries. 🙂

I had (have) my doubts regarding the explanation, why the feature popped up in beta rather than in dev. But I’m not personally hurt by the decision. 😉 Not at all.

        • Marcin Mitek

I will surprise you then. Beta has more users than dev. Difference is significant enough to treat beta users as the wider audience.

  • nanana1

Tested the video pop out and it’s feeling cool and awesome. Love it !
    – The color integrity of the pop out video looks slightly faint and flat compared to the original video in the Opera browser.
    – Closing the tab with the video also closes the pop out video

    • tdudziec

this is how it should work (regarding closing)

      • Vux777

        I think that’s wrong
why would you close pop up when navigating from tab?
        especially when user open playlist

        • MeMorYDeFeKt

not navigating from a tab, closing a tab

          • Vux777

sry, I meant navigating inside the tab to another url, not necessarily with video

          • MeMorYDeFeKt

if you move to another URL within a tab, you automatically close the video.
There is no source to the minimized Video and it closes

  • nan_43

    cool!

  • RafaellaG

The pop out seems to not always work.

Especially if it’s an embedded (youtube-) video. Only if you click on “youtube” (watch on http://www.youtube.com) it then works.

    Why is this so?

    (Win10 x64)

    EDIT: Example: http://www.pcgames.de/Cities-Skylines-Spiel-54756/News/Gigantische-Abwasser-Welle-zerstoert-Mega-Metropole-1192339/

    • Aneta Reluga

Thanks for the report and apologies – pushing the report forward.

    • tdudziec

in initial Beta release for this feature we are not adding detach button for embedded youtube videos.

      • RafaellaG

        Ok, thx.
I hope this feature is included in the next Developer release – for further testing in interaction with the other features

  • Vux777

    – opening preview didn’t paused main video
    – pausing main video also pauses preview (it shouldn’t, or…)
    – closing YT tab closes preview (?! is that by design?)

    • Aneta Reluga

      Thanks!

    • NoName

“- closing YT tab closes preview (?! is that by design?)”

Without a tab, the video has no context to run in. So yea makes sense to design it that way.
A hack could be to keep the tab context running in the background, until the video has been stopped or closed.
But having a site open that you cannot see anywhere is not a great thing to do either.

      • Vux777

I’m not sure about that logic
the whole point of the popup is to run out of the context of parent tab…
even if that tab is closed or something else is loaded in it

popup has it’s own commands (close, pause, play…), no problem with that

so the only reason is from technical side, because it is reading parent tab cache to render video, and when parent tab is destroyed, cache is gone

        • NoName

Some players need js to function while playing (I hate those, but they exist).
I don’t know if they actually work even now, I’m waiting for Dev build before testing.

  • Shion

    Poor Maxthon.

  • When will you stop supporting Opera and focus your resources on other stuff? We all know that even if you’d build the best browser ever you will never beat the other browsers. I think it’s a waste of time and resources. Your Opera Max stuff is very good, you could focus on it.

    • BK

You can stay with us watching as we kick ass of majority of browser-underdogs for 20 years now, and as we beat other major browsers 🙂

      • Well… it’s been a while since I started watching and you are still under the 2%…

        • tdudziec

The thing that we are under 2% NOW does not mean we would not skyrocket soon.

          • I hope it happens, you deserve it. But I think you have tried to “skyrocket” for long enough. Now you should be realistic and focus on other stuff in which you excel, like Opera Max

  • AB77

Hello Opera’s team ! I have a question : do you know when the adblock feature will realase for Opera Mini on iOS ? Thank you

    • Aneta Reluga

      I am sorry – that’s a separate team and myself, I don’t have such information. 🙁

    • Leonardo Gomes

Opera Mini for Android already has it in latest beta, so i guess it will not take that long to reach IOS, unless there is any limitation from Apple.

      • AB77

        Thank you for news 🙂

  • tarkus

I use O dev as my default browser. When can I have access to this feature?

    • Aneta Reluga

This should be ready in next week’s dev update.

    • ricksper

I have been seeing it in some my Dev installs and not understanding what in h*ll it was all about.

  • Marek

Nice. Since Vivaldi started developing I was thinking about switching the future, when there’s a stable version. And now that it is, I was testing it and Opera is still better, and lately with the new adblocker and now this, it’s really getting ahead of its competitors.
By the way, I liked the “dark theme” in Vivaldi which makes the adress bar in nice dark color, would this be possible to add in Opera?

    • BK

Thanks for good feedback. At the moment we are not working on dark theme support, you could keep checking dev stream for more news 🙂

  • Sidney Guioy

Video pop out Feature is awesome !
beeing able to put the video in fullscreen would be perfect ! ( dual screen user here ) So you don’t have to pop out full tab to watch a serie on an other display !

Ability to pop out embeded video would be a very usefull feature, more and more videos are embeded nowdays, so it’s really requiered ( as some embeded video don’t allow full screen unless you have and addon for it, or like i do on dallymotion, pick up video source and past in opera give native HTML5 player un full page 😀 )

  • Zero Kiryu

Does this new feature only work with Youtube videos?

    • Tommy Wille

“Go to a video page […] and run a video.” and “This feature is based on HTML5 technology”. Just tried on e.g. Vimeo.

  • Druszlak

Actually… It’s amazing. Works even with minimized browser. Nice job!

  • Jaiba Mon

I love it. There are other browsers that does this but this is the most clean and fast implementation of this feature. Good job!

  • Stanislav Stratil

I already have a solution for this kind of feature.
Its called Copy url and paste it to my default video player.

Sorry, but this is just another feature, which I cannot appreciate. I would be more happy if you did some work on these things:
    – Optional search box, which is in unfinished and useless state. Yes, I was happy to have it back. But im not using it. Guess why.
    – Better search engine management, sorting, icons in context menu, grouping options etc (there are many things to improve)
    – Improved skin for win7 users (osx and win10 has it, why not win7?)
    – Opera menu. You said that you are improving this menu, and all you did was changed like 2 items there. Thats not improvement at all. It needs complete redesign.
    – Custom mouse gestures. Why its not available already?
    – Global options for opening results in current/background/foreground tab with ctrl and shift modifiers
    – …

I think there would be more, but this is enough for now.

    • BK

Copy and paste is really handy and convenient, I agree! Way much faster than 1click.

Thanks for the list. If you would to pick one from it, it would be..?

      • Kai Ockendorf

well, I would chose mouse gestures 🙂 …please give more love to mouse gestures!!

      • Nekomajin43

Why should he choose only one?

        • Stanislav Stratil

Thats a good question… but I have noticed that he done this “choose only one” thing before to someone else.

          • BK

no no, you are the ONE ! 😉

        • BK

We can do anything, but not everything 🙂 Multitasking in project management is best way to not deliver.

          • Nekomajin43

You can do everything, just not at once. But when you are finished with one thing, you can begin to work on another. 🙂

          • BK

Exactly, that’s why I’m asking what would be the thing to start with.

          • Nekomajin43

I think the most annoying are the abandoned projects. The dedicated search box, the sidebar, the reconstruction of the main menu, the toolbar expander…

I like the big projects, they bring back something from the old Opera feeling, but there are more and more unfinished features. Most of them are much smaller than the content blocker.

        • Leonardo Gomes

To show what is the most important?

      • Stanislav Stratil

Yeah, you are somehow right. 😀
But for me, its still better in my desktop video player, because I have there better video performance than in opera browser. But it must be something about chromium, because playback in firefox is ok.

So, if I could choose one, I would go with opening results in current/background/foreground tab, as I wish. Cause im usually on some site, where is plenty of stuff for searching in my search engines, and if I select text, and search for something, it will always open in foreground tab, and then I must switch back to previous tab.

If you are searching for plenty of words like this, and want to review results later, its annoying to switch back after every search.

Thank you for reply @disqus_YDJhOQt4lR:disqus I appreciate that.

      • Herr Pietrus

“I would go with opening results in current/background/foreground tab, as I wish. Cause im usually on some site, where is plenty of stuff for searching in my search engines, and if I select text, and search for something, it will always open in foreground tab, and then I must switch back to previous tab.”

        I have anything against video pop-out but please… ^^^

    • Ghirahim

      /facepalm

    • Bonnox

to me, the ony points I agree with you, are

      – search engines: they could be syncronized as well, why not to ?
      – mouse gestures: bring back that grey-ish circle popping up while holding rigth button like in opera 12, bwcause now I activate mouse gestures when unneeded too often. it would help me recognise the gesture triggering and cancel it. 😉

regarding the theme, I think is a matter of how the OS manages the windowing process. if you notice, for example, in linux no program is able to put buttons on title bar. Please devs confirm my suspicion 🙂

  • Nico

Thank you for the Beta Update. I have a few opinions regarding the Popup Icon:

    – When in fullscreen mode, it should not be displayed
    – Unfortunately right now, the button is always visible. It’s just a small button, but still, it should disappear automatically after a few seconds and only appear again when hovering the mouse over a Video.

Also, while trying this on YouTube (I didn’t check any other video page), while popping out a video, both videos were running and the original video didn’t pause (Windows 10 x64, clean USB/standalone install, no extensions).

    • Kornelia

Thank you for your suggestions Nico. I checked Win10 issue but I cannot reproduce it on my machine. I’m able to pause the video on detached window, and in the same time, oryginal video is pausing too.

      • Nico

        Hi Kornelia,

Thank you for your reply. And my bad, I thought the original video was supposed to pause when using the popup video instead. Sorry for the misunderstanding!

By the way: If I pause the popup video, the original video will pause too, so no issues here on my end as well.

        • Kornelia

Great to hear that it works on your side as it’s supposed to. Feel free to comment/share any suggestions you will have while testing this feature. Cheers!

  • icetom

    multitasking is a myth.

    • Wando Schneider

While Working, i agree. But while doing things that need less attention, it’s doable.

      • Leonardo Gomes

Some days ago i listened to someone on a radio program saying that human’s brain simply can’t do multitasking.
What we do is to quickly change focus from one task to another.

  • hspdion

I think I know the answer to this already, but just to verify: this won’t work with twitch.tv right now because while their player control ui is done via html5, the underlying video is still flash; correct?

    • Kornelia

Correct. twitch.tv is on our ‘to do’ list and we already noticed a problem there.

      • They are working on full HTML5. Hard to say when it will be updated. They don’t really have schedules for their feature updates. I think it is about a year since they did the controls.

  • Mert

hey maybe you can add native page translation feature(chrome-like) in the new betas
-yandex pretty successful, maybe a associate can be made

    • Leonardo Gomes

I guess it would be kinda difficult for them to implement as they don’t own a translation service.

Of course they could partner with Google, Bing or any other but any choice would bring complains.

    • Kornelia

      Every suggestion is welcome.

  • catup

It looks that the pop up only supports youtube.

    • Leonardo Gomes

Works on Facebook and Vimeo too.

    • Kornelia

If you’re sure that site is not using flash, let us know ones you’ll find not working video. We’ll take a look 🙂

      • catup

        Youku.com, 56.com

        • Leonardo Gomes

At least here, both sites are using Flash.

    • Gloriam

Seems to work for me on every HTML5 player I’ve tried.

  • Zero Kiryu

Are you planning to improve this video pop-out feature? For example, it would be great if I can create more than one pop-out (I open 2 or more tabs and than I can watch videos in different pop-outs).

    • BK

Yes, further improvements are on the agenda, including more than one video support. Any other ideas? 🙂

      • Gloriam

Certainly not a must but, at the moment both left and right mouse buttons are for dragging the window, could we have the right mouse button open the context menu like usual?

(All kinds of ideas are popping out of my mind no pun intended!)

        – Audio control with scroll wheel.
        – Able to use spacebar to pauze/unpauze video.

      • Druszlak

Pop out button should appear only while moving the mouse over a video, not always at the beginning of the video as implemented now. I know it’s a reminder that such function exist, but it also distract from the media content.

  • Sergjjj
    • Kornelia

Yes, we’re aware of that and we’ve got that reported as DNA-52258.

      • nanana1

Yes, thanks for the bug report that the color of the pop out video is a tad less saturated and flat.

    • KAYOver

По моему так даже реалистичней смотрится 😀

      • Aneta Reluga

🙂 You’d love Kodak Profoto from the analog film era 🙂

  • Ghirahim

That looks awesome, guys! Unfortunately I can’t test it YET because my main browser is Opera developer.

    • Kornelia

One update away from Developer, no worries 🙂

  • Gloriam

Loving the new feature, thanks for bringing it to beta right away!

  • Peter Rüthemann

This feature is so cool and useful that I didn’t realized that I actually missed this feature in the past. Well done.

  • Michal

    Wow, I love it.

  • Dask

Reloading a page with developer tools open crashes the page

    • Aneta Reluga

URL and your OS please? I’m trying on various pages and can’t repro. Win7.

      • Dask

        Windows 10 x64 – every page

But that was with the previous beta version. Forgot to update, so no worries!

  • yigido

Now, another reason to love Opera 🙂 I love that new outside window for videos.
    Thanks

  • Nekomajin43

I’ve just tried it finally. Pure AWESOME. What I like the most is the independence from the browser window.

  • xxxhugo

Is it possible to have tabs next to Opera menu in non-maximized mode, as it is in maximized mode?

  • Vlad Violenty

how about Idea of “Pause and play audio by touch to Favicon”

как насчёт Воспроизведения или остановки музыки нажатием на Favicon

  • kapsi

Cool but every tab should be able to do that.

    • Leonardo Gomes

      What do you mean?

      • kapsi

        Pop out every tab

  • Now this is innovation. Finally something fresh from you guys. Love it. I often listen to podcasts etc. on YT and it’s great to have the option to browse while listening/watching.

edit: On my Macbook Pro atm and notice quite a spike in CPU time when it is enabled. I hope it will be better optimized in the future.

    • BK

      Thanks for good feedback !
ps. Hardware encoding support is yet to come. One the to-do list.

      • Great to hear. Laptop getting real hot while using it 🙂

    • taneli

      Innovation?
      https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/picture-in-picture-viewer/efaagmolahogmekmnmkigonhfcdiemnl/details?hl=en-US

I’m fairly sure people have no idea what the word “innovation” means nowadays.
Let the downvotes flow, i guess.

      • It’s not always about being first with the idea. It is also about execution and improving upon ideas. Innovation can be a evolution or revolution. I rarely bring this up, but Apple is rather known for this.

Since you are expecting to get down votes then you are fully aware of your point of posting. Crawling comments for something negative to say isn’t really that productive.

At least you wasted a few minutes of my life.

        • taneli

Sure, sure, except this new “innovation” does not execute better, or improve on existing solutions.
          But, hey, don’t mind me.
Also, expecting down votes ’cause, you know, sheeples.
Anyway, you have a pleasant evening.

        • taneli

That was not “crawling comments for something negative to say”, just something that caught my eye.
          Sorry for taking your time.

        • Bonnox

therefore, according to your definition of innovation, the real innovation of old opera presto (tab bundles, tabs itself, pop up blocker, sidebar, and so on) was a failure, because the share remained under 2 % of the users in 20 so almost no-one noticed how great those festure were, but still managed to be copied by rivals.

this is not the real meaning of innovation, this is merely marketing, lol.

      • Stanislav Stratil

I wonder if developers knew about this extension.

There is actually only 1 innovation for me in this 15+ Opera, and that is its bookmark manager with visual thumbnails.

        • taneli

By no means that was to diminish what the team is doing, it’s great that they are adding new features.
Just the use of the word “innovation” seems to have gone the wrong way.

  • Victoria

I love the popup window for Youtube. but I am still having trouble with controlling flash videos with my DPI being higher than 100%. I can only pause still and this has been going on since the last 2 updates.

    • Leonardo Gomes

I guess the fix didn’t reach beta stream yet.

      • Victoria

Yeah I’ll use stable for now. A bit of a bummer.

  • ayespy

I guess I’m old-fashioned. I view the web as a particularly unsuitable way to consume video. It’s my work platform. And for the life of me, I could almost swear Opera ASA spies on my usage patterns and then meets weekly to debate: “What sparkly shiny innovation can we spend weeks or months developing, that will be of absolutely no use whatever, to Ayespy?” The browser is absolutely full to overflowing with these features now, and I’ll thank you guys to start spying on someone else to determine THEIR useless features, because at least one of them is bound to be something that would pique my interest! ;/

  • Bob Tarling

I don’t know what has happened during the update process, but my comprehensive Speed Dial page has defaulted to the few supplied in a fresh installation, even synching hasn’t returned the pages I had in my Speed Dial :(.

    • BK

Seems like you have installed different stream – final, developer, beta use separate profiles and don’t share the user data.

      • Bob Tarling

I didn’t install anything, Opera seems to have updated itself…

    • RafaellaG

But you can copy the Bookmarks and BookmarksExtra from on profile to the other if you like.

      • Bob Tarling

I don’t have more than one profile – I still seem to have all of my bookmarks, but not the personalised Speed Dial…

        • Leonardo Gomes

Have you checked in Bookmarks Manager > Other Speed Dials?

          • Bob Tarling

Thank you Leonardo – how do I change the Speed Dial with that?

          • Leonardo Gomes

Menu > Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks

          • Bob Tarling

I don’t have a problem accessing all of my Bookmarks, but I’d ideally like to have my Speed Dial as it was before last night… By following your previous post re: the Bookmarks Manager, and Other Speed Dials, I can see each of the previous Speed Dial folders, and their contents, but only through the Manager :(.

          • Leonardo Gomes

You can copy/move those entries in “Other Speed Dials” to “Speed Dial” to recover your Speed Dial status.

          • Bob Tarling

Thank you, once again, you’ve saved the day :).

          • Bonnox

excuse me sir, could you please tell me how to delete one device from tabs view (one of the options in the home, under bookmarks) ?

          • Leonardo Gomes

I don’t know if it’s possible. Try right clicking on the device name.

    chrome://flags/#enable-platform-accelerated-video-decoding

Is disabled by default? o.O CPU usage stays at 25-30% and video is really choppy. If I enable it the problem is fixed and CPU usage stays at 5-10%.

I don’t use Beta, I have Dev edition (which doesn’t have this problem), I just wanted to try the popup video.

    • Vlad Violenty

      where you find this Flag?

вы где вообще нашли этот флаг?

      • RafaellaG

Only in Opera Beta (for now).
        Enter opera://flags/#enable-platform-accelerated-video-decoding in address field

  • Ghirahim

Off-topic, but is it possible to have a red Opera icon on Opera developer? Now it’s silver.

    • nanana1

Opera Developer is intentionally silver icon to differentiate it from the red Opera Stable icon.

      • Ghirahim

I know but I would love to have the red one.

        • Bonnox

are there some resources we could change in the installation folder?

    • RafaellaG
      • Ghirahim

        Superb.

      • nanana1

That would be a regressional decision on Opera icon. 😉

        • Leonardo Gomes

I guess there may be going a little confusion about the icons colors.
What seem to be changing is the color of the Opera icon on the left of “Menu”, which is returning to red as it used to be.

The other icons (the ones for Taskbar, Start Menu, etc) will keep their current colors if i understood correctly.

          • nanana1

I checked my latest Opera Beta and Developer versions and the Opera icon on the left of “Menu” are already red in color.

The Opera icons in Start Menu and Taskbar remain as half red/half silver (Beta) and silver (Developer).

          • Kurt Zon

is that so if you have “Show system colour on top bar” enabled?

          • Leonardo Gomes

If you have that option enmabled them the icon color will change to “fit” the top bar color.

          • Kurt Zon

            thank you..

          • Ghirahim

Taskbar icon, yes. Can I change it? How?

          • Leonardo Gomes

            Afaik, you can’t.

  • Alexander

    Hello,

I’ve just cleared my web browsing data, re-lunched Opera, and Synchronization status icon as well as Downloads icon – are missing on the task bar…and I cant find any option to return them…Helpppppp)

    • Leonardo Gomes

Did you download anything after have re-launched Opera? Download icon will only show up if something has been downloaded.

      • Alexander

yes, I downloaded several files…but to see the donload window – you have to open it via O-menu…

        • Leonardo Gomes

Strange. Here i can see the download icon without problems.
Have you tried with a clean standalone installation?

        • The sync icon only shows when there are sync issues or you are not signed in.

The download icon only shows when you download something or have recently downloaded something and have NOT cleared your download history.

Also, some extensions somehow disable the download button showing up.

    • Leonardo Gomes

I may be wrong but i guess the synchronization icon will not show up unless a installation is made or the profile folder cleared. And just for some time, after which will disappear again.

  • yigido

under Opera menu, you changed the “Extensions” sub-menu string.
in Opera Beta there is “My Extension”
in Opera Dev there is “Manage Extension”
make a decision guys! Can someone tell me why you still do not translate strings even in this Beta? We are very close to stable release…

    • Leonardo Gomes

Translations are released usually on stable channel.

      • yigido

I hope so, what if they are will be untranslated into next stable? Should we wait for the next stable release?

        • Leonardo Gomes

Yep. 🙂 And for the next and then the next. 🙂

Thanks for the report. This is a known issue with Flash items on DPI higher that 100%. Should be fixed in one of the upcoming updates.

  • L. Kitu

Really useful feature guys!, but please add an option to open the downloads (Save in temp folder, like firefox does), instead of saving everything in the downloads folder.
Thank you so much, keep the great job!

    • Please check your settings. there is a way to automatically add it to a folder of your choosing or have it ask for a location to save every single time!!!

      • Vux777

I think OP doesn’t want for file to be saved, just downloaded in “some temp folder” and auto-run it after download

  • zakius

would you stop adding gadgets before you finish features?

The following site’s links do not respond with Opera 38b, but do for the most part with Opera 12 and other Chromium based browsers: https://www.altrarunning.com/men/olympus-20

    New build – Opera beta 37.0.2178.22 😉

  • mdiwncor .

I’d like a way to turn it off. The icon that drops down in the middle of the video is quite annoying, especially on looping gifs, as it keeps showing up everytime the gif starts over.

    • L33t4opera

Hi, go to the address bar, copy/paste opera:flags#media-detachable-view, and press Enter, select “Disabled” from the drop-down, and press the “Relaunch Now” 😉

      • shurname

Thanks you a million times, L33t4opera!

This thingie was driving me insane, although now that I have more info about it, I wish there was an easier way to turn on or off, like a button on the extension icons *wink~addon developers~wink*

      • Mel

Thank you so much for this! Very very helpful. I just happened to stumbled onto your post while looking for a way to get rid of the icon. I was starting to become one of those little things the bugs a person out of principle because there seemed to be no easy way to get rid of it.

  • Can you implement it as an extension and add also in chrome.google.com?

  • Nik

I just discovered it on Opera 37.0.2178.32, while watching YouTube. First I thought it was a Youtube feature. Then I saw it on Facebook and other obscure sites too. I thought may be its from an extension, but I didn’t have any for this purpose! I got scared, what if its some malware trojan thing! Then I Googled “pop up video opera” and HERE I AM! Pleasantly surprised that Opera has added this wonderful feature!! Thank you Opera!! I have been using it for past 8-9 years and don’t plan on switching ever!!

    • Bonnox

Me too! I tried searching something like “youtube window detach” but didn’t find anything. I just couldn’t realise that it was opera, until for a fluke I came across this page. great job devs, this is really a neat surprise! even more surprisingly, I did not see this feature pass through the next/developer step!

  • Degru

Could you please make it consistently auto-hide across all sites? When I watch embedded Youtube videos on The Verge, it won’t hide, even in fullscreen.

  • Lion De Oliveira Lorena

Just noticed this on the release branch.
Does not works on NetFlix, works everywhere else.
    Nice feature.

  • Dudok22

Absolutely awesome! It doesnt work on twitch though

  • Sayce

The video pop out feature ist just gorgeous! Works also when you do video pop out on your host machine and connect with RDP to another PC. Love it ! 🙂

  • Kishen Rao

I absolutely love the feature! (After I tried it out that is)
At first I thought that it’s a short-cut to display a video in full screen, but when I tried it, I found out that it’s a video pop-out, like the Youtube app in smartphones, but adjustable in size and position! I’m currently watching a music video as I type this!
I also thought that it was a Youtube or Facebook feature haha.
I love that the pop-out stays there even when you change the window or open a new program!

By the way I have some humble suggestions:
    1) Could you guys make the video pop out automatically on the bottom-right of the browser window (or the last adjusted position of the pop-out by us users), like in the android Youtube app, especially when the video is not in sight? (like when scrolling down to read the comments, or when going to a new/different tab or window)
It really helps especially when you want to read the comments or just wanna use another website but at the same time you don’t want to miss the video. Sometimes you just don’t have the time or just forget to click that little pop-out button haha.

    2) I get that this feature is still in its adolescence, but other simple features like adjusting the video’s volume, turning the video to full-screen by the video pop-out itself, and like in Youtube, pausing the video by just clicking on it instead of clicking the pause button would be great!

Thanks in advance! You guys are awesome!

    P.S. I appreciate replies!

  • Fernando

    Awesome! Really awesome!

  • biil

how can I disable it ?

    • Leonardo Gomes

      Disable what?

If you are talking about the video pop-out, for now you can disable ir in opera:flags but remember to read the warning on the top of the page.

      • biil

        yes and thank you

  • LifeWulf

If you go to https://www.google.com/inbox/ it shows the pop-out tag on the little intro animation. That should not be the case. Please only target certain websites for now.

    • roebling

Why? Wouldn’t your email open in a widget in the corner be a great way to keep up at work?

      • LifeWulf

You misunderstand me. The animation, and JUST the animation, is what pops out. Nothing to do with the actual function of the website itself. This won’t let you check your email in a little widget, and that’s not what the pop-up functionality is for. It is EXCLUSIVELY for videos, which is why this is a problem, however minor.

  • roebling

Looking for a popout video window to run in the corner while I’m working on other stuff. This is it. Surf to video you want &, when the pop-out logo appears, click on it. The mini screen appears and it’s moveable. Then either minimize the main screen (don’t close it) or surf on it for news or whatever while your video continues to stream in the foreground in the pop-out.

  • Patryk Wieczorek

    This feature is literally wonderful!!!

  • Suco Core

I accidentally removed the “always on top” feature, by opening a playlist (in win 10, it asked me which program to use to open the playlist) and from that time on, detached video is not on top.

  • to

    mine dnt work

  • valya

I adore this new feature. Thank you so much guys! At first I thought it was like a new YT feature, but then found out I can’t play videos this ‘popup way’ on the other popular browsers I use on my job. Really need to install Opera on my work PC.
    Thanks once again.

  • Rich

How do I disable it or change the ridiculous center location to a corner?

  • douglas

make this work with more video players like picarto and piczel stream players

  • Batman

How do you get the video control bar to disappear like its supposed to??? So annoying with it in the bottom middle of your screen all the time.

    • Leonardo Gomes

Any examples? Here they go away as should.

  • Florin Bardosi

An attribute on video tag which would disable this feature can be helpful. Having “custom” features on a player, which are not accessible in the Opera video pop-up player, may confuse the user. My question: there is such an attribute ?

  • Martijn Imhoff

Pop out is great for following tutorials and video lectures! However some (global) shortcuts would make it more awesome, like pause/play, 5 secs back or forward.

  • Cyrus Childs

    Not all you tube works.

  • Melvin Guerrero

Opera Youtube Pop Up at the beginning works for me, but not anymore. Now what it does is stay behind and not on top of my browser. How can I fix it?

    • Nik

It happen sometimes. Just close the browser and restart.

  • Please make it work for webrtc videos!

  • Strixe

Lately the pop out video always gets behind the browser. When I used it before that, it nicely position itself in front of the browser.

  • jnhks

Always-On-Top utility from labnol.org will keep your video on top of all else…. you can get it here:

  • Ferit Şen

pop out is a great feature. I’ve been waiting for resize options.

    • Ferit Şen

resize option has already been, amazed again.

      • Humanoiidd

Where you find the resize option ?

  • Miranda June

Why doesn’t this feature work with anything but YouTube? It would be nice if it worked for all video watching websites like: Hulu and Netflix

    • Leonardo Gomes

It should work with all html5 based videos.

  • blablablablaniewazneitakdisqus

Useless. It doesn’t stay where it should when I switch the website, just disappears. Why the fuck would I want two videos at once???? I don’t see any case in which I’d like a pop-up window with the same video I already have on the website. Can’t close the cart, can’t do shit with it.

    • Nik

You have to KEEP that tab with the original video ON. If you close the tab how will the video play?? Open anything else you need on new tab.

      • blablablablaniewazneitakdisqus

Yeah but I’d say the best would be to have the main tab closed! In such case, I can just open a new window, and I don’t need the main tab. Shitty. I have two simultaneous videos playing at the same time. You call that usable & efficient? SHIT.

  • Babunia

Only works for me for a few hours, after that it pops out like normal, but is always at the background of everything (wouldn’t be surprised if soon even wallpaper would switch places with it). Reinstalling works, but yet again for few hours only. Can anyone help me?

  • Sara Anderson

I like this feature. I was using it with Netflix. But the pop-out video would frequently stop and start or stop and not start, not until I returned to the original Netflix tab to allow the video to buffer. Once I returned to the original tab, the buffer happened very fast. I don’t know if this is related, but soon after I started using this feature, I stopped being able to watch any Netflix videos in the opera browser, with or without the pop-out. The screen frequently freezes as a white screen or alternates between blocks of the screen freezing as black or white. Sometimes the blocks, which switch shape and move all over, continue after I leave Netflix and move on to another site.

I would really appreciate advice on solving this problem.

  • Ramil

What’s the benefit, if floating window is always on top?

    • Nik

      Yes.

  • Tall Whitemail

There’s no way to turn it off! How could that get overlooked?
    Please correct that.
I don’t always want it there, it gets in the way especially on small screens.. Adding something to a software product (already in use) eliminates consumer choice except for the delete option!
I may switch browsers now even though faithful and I stayed with Opera for years now, could easily switch to Edge, being just as well, no on screen icon to pester me.
Am I the only one consumer that doesn’t want it? hehe.. Or are there really hundreds of thousands that don’t want an icon for nothing appearing on ALL videos, and don’t spend 5 minutes typing what they think of it. It’s great but I don’t want or need to use it, but thank you now turn it OFF, or let me!

    • Leonardo Gomes

You can disable video pop-out in settings.

      • Tall Whitemail

Thanks I had to google more than usual and it bothered me for a time now.
        fast response wow!

        • Leonardo Gomes

And didn’t you even thought about checking settings before all?

          • FM Last

I’m not the OP, but I didn’t realize it was a feature of Opera until finding this thread. Since I was only having problems with one site, I thought the problem was at their end, not with my own settings.

  • multiple video windows…..great feature … the window is very sleek and i actually want the code, so that i can have multiple videos playing at the same time, etc.

  • Jedd

Only started to use Opera a month ago and loving it (I don’t know why I haven’t switched sooner) and especially love this video pop out feature.

Unsure if you’re aware, but there’s a bug where if I press the back button while browsing another tab, the current popped out player will close.

    • Leonardo Gomes

      It’s known.

  • Edgar Sacadura

If i pop up the video of a playlist, when the video change to the next one the pop up close?

  • Davinderpal Singh

Hi I am using Opera 41 on Mac OS Seirra on Macbook Pro 15 and the pop out video feature has just stopped working for some reason

  • Shubham Waghe

This is a great feature, but I cannot leave Chrome for this,.. Any way to make it work on chrome? Some extension maybe?

  • AyyItsDom

Anyone know a command to use the pop-out player instead of clicking the icon? It works with twitch but the icon only comes up when loading the page then there’s no way to get it back without refreshing the page.

  • Leopoldo

With the new update on Netflix’s site, the pop-out button doesn’t appear when playing a video. Any thoughts?

  • Las2kno

Just downloaded Opera today. The pop out video started out fine but has now converted to a full screen “pop out” which is extremely annoying. What went wrong and how do I fix? It is installed on my Macbook Pro.

  • antalya cnc

    This feature is literally wonderful!!!

  • Grek Greka

Why Opera don`t have video speed up buttons for Vimeo like Chrome? Really, like Opera user I don`t need this stupid pop out =]

  • HOTD Fan

This needs a full screen button for the pop out video… i often use dual screens and use for videos while programming on the other one, and i don;t really like the fact of it not going, full screen, sure you can resize it yourself to fit but its really not the same… bit annoying to have to keep resizing it.it would just improve it greatly

  • Any idea when will this be available in chrome and firefox?
