Today’s beta is the stable release candidate, so please take into account that it contains just minor updates and stabilization fixes. Take a look at the following highlights:

  • There are a few adblocking feature fixes and adjustments, including the important fix for some pages not working when the feature was on.
  • The speed benchmark can now be correctly finalized regardless of the tab activity.
  • We implemented a few video pop out fixes, including the fix for the scenario that, when videos were covered by an overlay content, the detach button was not visible.
  • We have also fixed a crash when the system date/time was incorrectly set.

The Chromium version has been updated to 50.0.2661.87.

If you spot any issue you think is unsuitable for the stable quality, please let us know. Thanks in advance!

  • when can i subscribe personalized filter lists for the built-in adblock function?

    • Aneta Reluga

This functionality is intended for 38.x – so, basically, it is already available in the 38 developer stream, then it should reach 38.x stable within two months and beta a bit earlier.

      • qwerzaq

he will automatically download from this website? now it is impossible you presses speaks AdBlock isn’t established
and these lists will be updated by yourself ?
to me it is necessary RU AdList
        https://adblockplus.org/ru/subscriptions

он будет автоматически скачивать с этого сайта? сейчас это не получается нажимаешь говорит не установлен AdBlock
и эти списки будут обновляться самостоятельно ?
to me it is necessary RU AdList
        https://adblockplus.org/ru/subscriptions

        • Aneta Reluga

No. We want to give users full control over what they apply as their filters, so in fact the lists will have to be downloaded first, and then installed (possible after some modifications if the user wishes to do so).
Please remember that this functionality will be available in 38.x, not 37.x (this is 37).

          • Nekomajin43

Will you consider the ability to import block lists from online sources? I don’t want to manually update country specific lists, for example.

          • Aneta Reluga

We had a prolonged discussion here over this matter and the general conclusion is that, while it is very convenient for the users to have lists pulled from online sources, it also poses certain risks (such as malicious intents of the content provider if the source site gets compromised). I agree the probability is low, but then again, you never know (it is enough to read Hacker News to get a bit paranoid).

          • Nekomajin43

I don’t think you can solve this problem this way. Anyone can download a malicious file and add it to the content blocker, so at the end of the day, it is the same.

On the other hand, online lists are usually updated regularily by the community. Imagine that a user manually imports a list from the local machine, then a few rules become outdated, and you will get the complaints about a feature which is not working as expected.

So I would really like to ask you to reconsider this decision. A lot of us will use an addon instead of the built-in solution. Personally, I don’t care how much faster it is, if I can’t import other/custom _up to date_ lists with a few clicks. And I am sure I am not the only one.

          • qwerzaq

so I fully support you need to import block lists from online sources
most people can not do it manually which is why for the average user would be more profitable to these lists to receive automatic updates from Internet sources
            and as I wrote above
uBlock Origin in this regard is very convenient
            Thank you so much

          • Aneta Reluga

You have valid points here, I can only forward your opinion and let’s see what happens.

          • Nekomajin43

If I am right, the worst what a malicious list can do is to break sites by blocking elements that belong to the main content (for example articles, images, menus). Which is a serious issue, but it can be done with online and offline lists too, there is no difference.

Another downside is the location. If/when you decide to sync custom adblock lists (prettyplease! 🙂 ), it will be a lot easier to do from a unified location from the profile folder.

The best you can do in this case is to display a warning message in the adblock settings like you do in the extension manager for the private switch.

Or you can manage a collection of trusted lists and offer it in the blocklist importer. Similar to any adblocking extension.

          • Aneta Reluga

Well. Your suggestions specifically, word-by-word, are now inside DNA-53204. Please ping higher instances than me with this number all you want. 🙂

          • Nekomajin43

            Thank you!

          • firuz_u7

            Thank you so much

            спасибо большое

          • firuz_u7

I support even if it to appear O40 but I wait for it

поддерживаю даже если это появиться O40+ но я жду этого

          • +1
I just wanna set it and forget it.

And the ability to define rules oneself would also be great. The use case is when I need to fix an issue of one of the subscribed lists.

  • Michal

When the ad block is enabled, I cannot view the comments on vg.no. There is a blue button at the end of an article that opens all the comments, but nothing happens when I click it. If I disable ad block, it works.

  • redfox

    VPN?

    • Aneta Reluga

For VPN you have to wait just a little bit more, for 38.x version.

      • redfox

        OK

  • Pavel Aleksandrov

How close is this to a stable release?

    • Aneta Reluga

This is a RC, so if everything is OK, the next 37 should be stable.

      • Pavel Aleksandrov

Oh whoops I somehow missed those first key words in the post. Thank you.

  • iPristy

No DNA-52811 for me, can’t edit Speed Dials under special circumstances.

Well to explain further, that more users can try, last time i forget to mention disable search box on speed dial.

1.) Disable search box on Speed Dial (after enabling advanced options).
2.) Have just one or one line of Speed Dial thumbnails on screen.
3.) Try to edit one, it can’t be done.

    Proof:
    http://shrani.si/f/3Z/Sg/32xSQLKy/o.jpg

    • Aneta Reluga

It is fixed already for 38.x.
I’ll check if it is possible to port it to 37 (might be risky). In the best case, stable 37 would have this fix; in the worst one, you’ll have to wait for 38. My apologies.

      • iPristy

It’s OK, i guess the bug was born when you added option to disable search box on speed dial, that’s was in 35 i think.

      • RafaellaG

It may be fixed internally for Developer, but not in build 38.0.2205.0 !!! Still got the issue reported from iPristy.

        • Aneta Reluga

Yes, indeed, I forgot to mention that (I verified that issue myself), but the next developer update with this fix is really s00n.

  • yigido

Please fix this adblocker rule before the stable release of adblocking feature.
    DNA-52996
    and please hide these ads
    DNA-52397 – DNA-52399 – DNA-52400

    Thanks,

    • Aneta Reluga

First of all, thank you for your reports. Your issues are clear and well-described, which is much appreciated!
Regarding DNA-52996 – I’m sorry, but this is the EasyList issue. All we can do is ping them so that they update their list accordingly (which they will hopefully do soon).
The same goes for the remaining issues. We do not modify the EasyList ourselves.
With 38 version though, you will be able to download and apply your own blocking lists, or even create one if you feel like doing so. At that time, even if EasyList still doesn’t block the ads sufficiently, the others may do their job. My apologies for the inconvenience.

      • yigido

Thanks for the explanation. I got the point. I will report them to Easylist author.

  • yigido

and many thanks for all missed translations. Those are now all seem good.
Opera 37-38 will be great releases! Thanks guys.

    • Kornelia

Good to hear that those translations are fixed now. I was waiting for your verification. 🙂

      • yigido

        Thanks Kornelia 🙂

  • Roby

Let’s try again, bilingual spell checker, is that coming?
Having to switch back and forth between my native language and English tends to be quite annoying.

    • Leonardo Gomes

Seems to be working on O38, although it may need improvements.
Would need to test it more.

  • Felix

I don’t know how often that was already asked – but here’s the question:

Will Opera – that uses Chromium – ever be able to work with a Chromecast? It’s possible to install the “Google Cast” extension but it doesn’t work. I don’t find many answers on the internet and the ones I can find always point into the same direction –> it’s not working!

    Can you comment on this?

    • Leonardo Gomes

Does it work on other Chromium based browsers, except for Chrome?

      • Dwayne

It works on the Slimjet browser.

    • I have asked for this many times. It doesn’t look like it will ever be implemented.

    • Kornelia

We’re not supporting this technology at the moment. The “Google Cast” extension is also not supported by Opera Add-ons. We’re going to implement this in the future but no ETA for now.

      • Felix

Thanks for the answer! 😉 Keep going!

I’m an Opera user since ver. 6 and that Chromium based version is definitely heading into the right direction lately.

  • Any info about a future add of Speedial and Extension sync?

    • Leonardo Gomes

      Speed Dial is already synced.

      • Leo Lozes

In a quite strange way. You get a different Speed Dial for every machine you log in. Which I guess is fine for some people, but I want the same everywhere, and for that use case, the current syncing is really not working. There should at least be an option to choose which synced Speed Dial you want to use.

Also, it would be nice to be able to say that you want the “specific set of pages” to open on startup as pinned tabs. In other browsers the tabs you “pin” are kept between sessions, and currently it’s impossible to replicate that behaviour in Opera.

        • bwat47

Personally I really value being able to have different speed dials per device (devices with different screen resolutions etc… where one devices speed dial wouldn’t be suited to another, especially when syncing between say a desktop and a phone).

but it would be nice to have the option to choose an existing speed dial to keep in sync with (e.g. a ‘use this speed dial on this device’ checkbox or something when looking at other speed dials.

For example in my case, I like to keep the same speed dial between my desktop and laptop, but would hate having all those speed dials on my phone.

          • Leo Lozes

Yeah, I agree, the current implementation makes sense for some use cases (like yours). It just needs that extra flexibility to re-use a Speed Dial when you want to. I remember even having different Speed Dial between Developer and Beta channel on the same machine (!).

  • tomaasz

Hi, I would like to use all 3 versions on my computer (stable, beta, developer). How could I use one profile for all of them ?

    • Aneta Reluga

This would be tricky. I mean, it *theoretically* could be possible that you set custom path to the same profile, but there are two caveats:
      1) You’d be able to run only one instance at a time (the profile gets locked by the active browser)
      2) There’s the possibility that Stable would not run after developer was used. The reason is obvious: while we have profile backwards compatibility and thus developer will recognize Stable profile, the other way round may be impossible if updates introduced by developer do not match the behavior Stable already knows.
To prevent any of these, I truly recommend using separate profiles. However, if you want to have the same starting point, you can copy the profile from Stable to beta and developer, and from beta to developer. Just please remember not to copy “downwards”, e.g. from developer to beta.

      • tomaasz

        Thanks for explanation.
Is it possible do it only for extensions ?
How can I set custom path ?

        • Aneta Reluga

I’m afraid extensions are installed per browser/profile so you’d have to copy them around as well.
You can set the custom path by running launcher.exe from the command line with the appropriate parameter, e.g. on Windows it would be something like: launcher.exe –user-data-dir=”C:the-path-you-want”. Make sure that you have access rights to that location first.

      • Marko Koivuniemi

“Just please remember not to copy “downwards”, e.g. from developer to beta.” Except when current developer version is promoted to beta.

  • Dark Magician

Current stable version never starts in full screen.

    • Aneta Reluga

I’ve just done a quick recheck on stable and it seems to work for me. Do you have any specific settings?

  • catup

The shockwave flash plug-in has stopped working for many times.

    • Leonardo Gomes

Are you using the latest ppapi version?

      • catup

        Yes

        • Leonardo Gomes

What OS? And what happens when you go to a page with Flash?

  • Abdolahi

    i need RSS reader !
you have promised to give us that !

    • Leonardo Gomes

I don’t remember they promising such feature.
At most they said that they may think of include it in the future.

  • tomaasz

How far are you from full synchronisation of profile (extensions) ?

  • L33t4opera

New build – Opera beta 37.0.2178.31, and the announcement.

  • Nashuim

I’m guessing DNA-52223 only affects youtube?

  • Jademarisa

    Classic menu bar, please!
