In today’s quick update we would like to offer you a few fixes:

  • DNA-49204 -[Linux] Can’t play h264 videos
Linux users shouldn’t have any problems with watching videos now.

  • DNA-50192 – [Mac] Network installer overwrites an existing O12 installation
As some of our users wanted to keep their old Opera 12 profile together with new one, we’ve made a fix to allow that.

We’ve also made some adjustments for Windows 10 users, such as: updating icons, background colours or tablet mode issues.
Chromium was updated to version 49.0.2623.87.

Hi Kornelia, thanks for the update and fixes 😉

  • yigido

Thanks for the update and fixes, I want to notice this here again., these are basic but unsolved reports.
Please check the reports. (DNA-51440) (DNA-51441)

Hi, I’ve forwarded your issues to our translation team. Best regards!

      Doesn’t seem that dark here.

      No problems on YouTube here.

          Not happening here.

Does changing opera://flags#disable-direct-write make any difference?

          • Паша Синкевич

Problem solved ! The fault was in the very Windows , I reinstalled Windows and everything was ok . Most likely due to a power failure at home, the power was lost in the apartment , and the computer is shut down abnormally .

Проблема решена! Неисправность была в самой Windows, переустановил систему Windows и всё стало ок. Скорей всего из-за сбоя в электропитании дома, пропадало электропитание в квартире, и компьютер аварийно выключился.

  • Zero Kiryu

It’s been 2 weeks without updates, maybe you could update opera developer 37 to 38?

  • blue_screen

Changelog is wrong: The 3 missing translations (DNA-50377 Go to browser settings not translated to any language) are not yet fixed (german),

Opera still displays white page instead of PDF-XChange Viewer NPAPI-Plugin.

    (Windows 7 pro 32bit.)

    • Leonardo Gomes

I guess they may just have fixed the issue that was preventing the translation to be done. Now it will go in normal translation process.

  • Oleksandr V

Seems like themes option in “Customize start page” sometimes works incorrectly. In particular when I chose default “Grey” theme for speed dial page, theme check-box doesn’t open sub-menu for changing themes. In this case the only way to change theme is to open global settings window. Is anyone faced with a similar problem?

  • oic

could you please make the webpage slider on the right edge a bit darker. I could barely see it sometimes when reading white background webpages

  • Alex

Hi! I reported the issue, you said it was known, I hoped in this release it would be fixed, but the problem is still here… Swipe left and right doesn’t work for me on os x (as navigation “back” and “forward”). I just can see overscroll instead of navigation. Please, fix this, it’s so annoying… Thanks!

“Adjust Speed Dial animations for slower hardware” is turned on, but it has no effect! I can still see the animation when I click on a SD folder! Developer, Beta & latest Stable version! Win 10×64

    • Leonardo Gomes

And why do you should not see it? Adjust may not mean stop.

      • Kai Ockendorf

Strange! In older versions there was no animation when I have it enabled! But maybe the Devs can say anything about it!?

    • Tommy Wille

I believe this is a known issue (there’s a few different issues with that particular setting, some are at least reported similar to your experience). The setting is not respected so it seems like it’s turned on, but it’s not. Look for DNA-50091 in future changelogs.

On-screen keyboard on Windows 10 now finally works! nice job, Opera!

  • ktxgio

    thanks for new release
“Chromium was updated to version 49.0.2623.87”
    Why not to 49.0.2623.110?

Is there a way to have “Double-click text to display context menu” option like in Opera 12?
If not, could you think to implement this option in new releases?
    Thanks

    • Leonardo Gomes

Because it reached (Chromium) stable channel just yesterday?

      • ktxgio

        thanks

      • Ricardo

Very wrong. Opera is always lagging behind Chrome security updates.
49.0.2623.87 is the version this Opera is using, and was released on March 8, 2016.
        49.0.2623.95 was released on March 15, 2016.
49.0.2623.108 security update was released on March 24, 2016.
        49.0.2623.110 was released on March 28, 2016.

        • Leonardo Gomes

Chrome apart, Opera is probably the Chromium based browser with Chromium build/versiom most close to the current one.

          • Ricardo

I would bet Vivaldi is that one. And I would like it become more stable than this Opera asap.

          • Leonardo Gomes

Maybe, but i don’t know how much Vivaldi features and UI may be affected by changes in Chromium nor how many changes they need to do in Chromium before updating it in Vivaldi.

        • Leonardo Gomes

There are lots of things that need to be checked when a new Chromium version is released before it can be updated in Opera.

If they just updated Chromium, there would be a high risky of things stop working.

          • Ricardo

Maybe they have a difficult process to merge chrome commits. Security updates are usually 95% certain not to break things, and are very welcome to protect users.

  • Gustav Ekner

What did you do to solve the Linux H.264 problem?

  • Spideymang

Hello Opera team and thank you for the update Kornelia
    Have great day!

  • kesha2000

Please, could you make on-screen keyboard to popup according to system settings, not just to a tablet mode. I don’t use tablet mode, but there is a system setting to bring keyboard with touch on textfields anyway, and it works everywhere… except Opera. It worked as it should in O35, I don’t understand why you changed this behaviour.

    • Mikolaj Boc

      Sure. DNA-51585

I am uptodate x64 Arch Linux user and there is still problem with youtube h264 html5 videos.

I need to install opera-ffmpeg-codecs package from aur repo. to watch those videos.

  • K.K.VinayKumar

Many websites still see Opera as mobile browser. Reported it in last update still hasn’t been solved.

    • Leonardo Gomes

There is nothing much Opera can do other than contact the sites and ask them to change the behavior.

      • K.K.VinayKumar

Just by changing the user agent( i.e by using extension) makes websites see Opera as desktop browser. Can’t the Opera developers just change the user agent to something that makes websites see Opera as desktop browser?

        • Leonardo Gomes

Well. most sites see Opera for desktops as a desktop browser.

The problem is with those thinking that see Opera and incorrectly think that it’s a mobile browser.

And the user agent contais info on the OS so i guess it should not be so difficult for the webpages to find out that they are being acessed through a desktop.

          • K.K.VinayKumar

Ok, then I guess GMail and Bing hasn’t updated their systems to determine which browser is using which OS. Everytime I use GMail Login Page it gives mobile version of its login page and everytime I search for images on Bing it always displays mobile version. Annoyed too much by this behaviour. Opera is the only browser I like and sad to see websites see this browser as mobile browser 🙁 .

          • Nachiketa Ramesh

Something is wrong with your settings. Works fine for me every time for Gmail and Bing.

          • K.K.VinayKumar

Whenever you visit GMail in other browser did you notice that there will be a transition effect when you type your email ID and press enter. That transition effect is absent in Opera.

          • Leonardo Gomes

It seems to be just Google doing the usual browser sniffing.

          • K.K.VinayKumar

It is not just Google even Bing also shows different page when anything is searched using Opera.

          • Leonardo Gomes

What is the problem with Bing? Seems ok here.

          • K.K.VinayKumar

Check out the images that I’ve posted in the following URL.
You can clearly see what I’m talking about. Above browser is Opera and below browser is Edge.

          • Leonardo Gomes

            Another case of browser sniffing.

          • K.K.VinayKumar

            Oh! 😮

          • http://eliotime.com/ eliotime3000

            That’s right.

          • Leonardo Gomes

Both Gmail and Bing load their desktop versions here.

Do you use any extensions? If so, check with them disabled. Also check with a clean standalone installation if needed.

          • Neil_hyg

Me too. Gmail desktop version. Never saw mobile version on the desktop.

          • Neil_hyg

For instance, the user’s display resolution is sent to the website. (Right?)

        • https://vivaldi.net/unity/profile/chas4/6-blog Chas4

Opera can do a BrowserJS as a work around, but as Lenardo said the best fix is to ask the site to correct the browser sniffing

What are a few of the sites with the bad sniffers?

  • 7thGear

Dear Devs and Mods, dear Community,
    dear Opera Software,

is there a chance to fix this? The Startpage is too dark http://abload.de/img/bild12os7y.jpg

Yes, i am on XP and i know, the Support for XP for Opera 37 has been stopped. But the 36 is still supported.

I am a theme designer (you can find me at the theme-catalogue) and i don’t have a clue how to fix a theme-File. The “Use Overlay=false”-Entry doesn’t seems to work, the Flag for “Overlay” as well.

If there is no fix in the next Build, how can i change the configuration in the Theme-Files?

I am begging you, dear Opera Software, please don’t stop the Support for XP. Please at least one more Version, Opera 37. It would be not fair, if O36 is the last one. Opera 36 is the Best Opera 15+-Version and its getting better with every Version. I am a Opera-Fan since 2001 and i had always supported you. I told anybody about this masterpiece of browser.

    Sincerely yours,
    Michael

    • Dave-H

The dropping of XP (and Vista) support has been forced by the Chromium project dropping support, it’s nothing to do with Opera themselves.
All Chromium-based browsers are affected, not just Opera.
Having said that, I thought all versions of Opera 36 would be OK on XP, and this version doesn’t seem to be being offered on my XP system, as I’ve queried above.

      • 7thGear

Thanks for the explanation. That would affect Vivaldi too, right?

        • Dave-H

Potentially yes. I did ask about it on the Vivaldi forum and blog when Opera made their announcement, but there was no official response. I’m hoping that the Vivaldi developers will try to keep compatibility with Vista and XP if they possibly can, but it may well get to a point where it just isn’t possible any more. I think the crunch will come when Vivaldi moves to Chromium version 50.

          • http://eliotime.com/ eliotime3000

In my case, Opera and Chromium continous builds still run in my Windows Vista partition with plattaform updates installed and up to date.

    • Neil_hyg

Are there issues that make you sick at the idea of upgrading your Windows?

      https://sites.google.com/site/easylinuxtipsproject/mint#TOC-Pick-your-flavour:-Cinnamon-Mate-Xfce-or-KDE

For Vista / XP users, recommend concentrating on the “Xfce” version of Linux. “The Xfce edition is much more lightweight than both Mate and Cinnamon [versions of Linux]. Therefore it’s very suitable for older computers.”

  • Alex

    • Kornelia

Hi Alex, it is known as I told you before. We’re working on it and we will update the fix as soon as it will be ready.

  • oic

I just found out about opera’s animated themes had more themes available than those found on speed dial top right corner. Showing it all in one row gave me the impression that there wasn’t many available. I’ve been trying them all out and love them

  • Davide Repetto

    Hello!
I’m happy to see that you are fixing the font rendering on linux.
It’s not quite there yet, though. The subpixel rendering is back, but many other settings are still ignored. I’m testing this on Fedora 23 – 64Bit.
I’m including a link to a couple of screenshots. One of the old opera 35, whose rendering still matched the rest of the system, and one of the current stable, which currently ignores most system settings.
It is difficult to put down in words the exact differences, but switching between the two images should make everything self evident:
    https://www.dropbox.com/sh/ke4f7v477bbgrnb/AABEoKnYhDKKXiAUUIj3FQ6ta?dl=0

  • Dave-H

Does this version work on Windows XP?
It’s not offering me the update.
I thought it was only with version 37 that XP (and Vista) support was being dropped, and all versions of 36 would be OK.

    • Leonardo Gomes

      I guess it should work.

      • Dave-H

It does work, as I tried a dummy separate install and it worked fine, as you probably saw on the forum!
I just want someone from Opera to say whether the automatic updating should be working, because it isn’t at the moment.

    • http://eliotime.com/ eliotime3000

Officially, Chromium Team does not realize that Chromium still running in Vista with Plattaform Updated installed, wich brings a few library updates for this Windows version that solve many bugs in Vista.

          • BK

hm.. depressing. Let’s see what our happy design will say about it 🙂

        • Neil_hyg

The Bookmark Bar. True, it’s pretty drab.

I tried the Bookmark Bar for a while, but I find it is too short and takes up a horizontal strip of real estate that’s not worth it, so I stopped displaying it (from the Bookmarks menu). Easier to type into the Address bar which works pretty well. Or access bookmarks one of the other ways, such as from the Bookmarks menu, and I have lots more Speed Dials than I actually use.

  • Jademarisa

Is giving us a classic menu bar against developers’ or owners’ religion? No way of getting a decent menu and getting rid of awful Opera button? Does allowing users to really customise Opera with Opera SKINS (not Chrome “themes”) break any unbreakable moral rule? Just asking… (Unless Opera changes this and develops a true own personality it will still be Chrome in disguise)

    • Neil_hyg

Text on many sites started appearing too bold beginning with one of the recent version updates. An example is the text of these comments, which appear bold to me. I can play with the CSS and get it to appear as normal weight, so it seems the problem is related to that. Internet Explorer and Firefox both display normal weight text here.

    • Vux777

can you post screenshot how it looks on your side?…
      here looks as usual
and did you maybe changed something in opera://settings/fonts ?
…or maybe removed some fonts from your system, etc…?

      • dick_c

http://i1111.photobucket.com/albums/h476/dick_c/font-display/screenshot-1.jpg Sorry about having to use photobucket. You may have to click the “zoom” icon on the top right of the image for 100% size.
IE on the left, Opera on the right. I haven’t deleted fonts or changed font settings in Opera. Display resolution is 1920×1200 on a 17″ screen. This is on Windows 7.

        • Vux777

it looks like Opera is using Helvetica bold (or something like that) font where it shouldn’t

but in that case, Chrome would do the same
maybe you install it recently with some package or program
          …just guessing

          • dick_c

Thank you!! Yes, I installed a few weights of Helvetica for some graphic work. I just figured it was a browser update and never made the connection. For some reason IE and Firefox used a lighter weight — which was actually harder to read, but since I very rarely use them I let that go.

It’s all better now. Thanks again.

There is also a bug with Windows 8.1 jump-list and extensions. When I start Opera and open a private window, there is nothing worong. All my extension icons seem on place.

But when I start a private window directly from W8.1 jump-list, all my extension icons disappear. There is only address bar and no icon at the right side of it. Extensions seem to work correctly but I cannot use buttons of extension. They just don’t exist.

Is it a know bug? I’ve also reported it but nothing happened. I have to switch to another browser unless this is fixed. I always start Opera in private window from taskbar. 🙁
