After last week’s revolutionary announcement of the built-in adblocking feature, Opera received a lot of attention, with significant press coverage all around the world. Today’s release is merely focused on bugfixing, and we have only the following highlights:

Risky files download warning

In short: some pages offer multiple silent downloads, and in some cases, you won’t even see they are being downloaded in the background. In this release, Opera recognizes this behaviour and offers the ability to cancel such download (which is particularly important in case you have automatic downloads activated).

Risky file warning

Minor ad-blocking feature update

The popup hint has been removed. Also, the whitelist now contains only 4 elements by default (and these elements are whitelisted for all country domains) – but this update will affect only the new users.

Future highlights

We have decided to share some of our work in progress regarding the ad-blocking feature, which is expected to be delivered with the next week’s release (which should achieve the beta status, by the way). The first one would be the refreshed benchmark page:

No-ad page benchmark

The blocked ads popup info will also acquire a refreshed look:

Please let us know what you think of these changes.

Chromium has been upgraded to version 50.0.2657.0.

Known issues

— At the moment, a new theme installation is a bit broken – instead of having it installed right away, a zip file is seen as downloaded instead, and then you need to select it manually from the locally available themes.
— We are also aware of a minor crash on exit and relaunch when in the fullscreen mode. Both of them are being worked on.
— Windows x64 experimental version is temporarily unavailable. We are experiencing issues with this version and they need to be fixed.
— Also, Mac 10.9 users unfortunately will not be able to upgrade yet. We are trying to identify and fix the issue.

Thanks, Aneta, for this Opera developer 37.0.2171.0 bug-fix update although I admit I am happy for the ads-blocking feature introduced since the last Developer version.

  • beBoss

Here http://arenabg.ch/torrents/ when you go on page 2, 3, 4 etc sometimes can’t catch the pop up, which is very annoying! This site is full of popup windows so have to check it!

    • Aneta Reluga

Thanks for the notification, we’ll check it out.

Edit: I can’t get any popup whatsoever for several minutes of browsing. I’m using Win7. What is your system? Thanks.

  • x a

Pleasing the eye: DNA-50696 Extension browser action icon shown in wrong scale 🙂

    • Vux777

      pageAction too

  • http://www.appsquadz.com/ Appsquadz Technologies Pvt Ltd

Much appreciated, Aneta, for this Opera engineer 37.0.2171.0 bug-fix redesign in spite of the fact that I concede I am glad for the inherent advertisement blocking highlight presented subsequent to the last Developer adaptation. The evacuation of the pop-up clue in this discharge will be a pleasant change for me

  • iYuzver

“Windows x64 experimental version is temporarily unavailable. We are experiencing issues with this version and they need to be fixed.”

    NNOOOOOOOOOO((((((((

    • Aneta Reluga

The assortment deficiency is only temporary, no worries!

  • Matheus Bombonato

Thanks for fixing the SpeedDial extensions 🙂

  • Emanuele

About the ad-block I was wondering if it’s possible/planned to:

    – subscribe to third parties filter lists;
    – block specific elements on the page;

or, to put it simple: will you cover all ABP/uBlock features, or the integrated one will be a basic tool?

    Thanks in advance

    • Aneta Reluga

This feature is still in its development phase, and at the moment we are evaluating quite a number of possible enhancements, including yours (if you had a moment to browse through the previous developer blog post, where this feature effectively debuted, you’d see a lot of suggestions). In short: I cannot tell for sure what or when, but it’s going to gain more functionality.

      • Nekomajin43

You know that it will be impossible to cover every national site with one international list. It will be also impossible to manually create/import national lists for every country. So you must give this option to the users.

  • Constantine Dinah

#simplified-fullscreen-ui does not work (html5 players), but works on players based on flash technology

  • L33t4opera

    • Leonardo Gomes

Wasn’t the personal news flag already there, maybe with a different name?

      • L33t4opera

Hi Leonardo, the #personal-news flag has been added in this build, and there’s also the old #personalized-news-start-page flag 😉

        • Leonardo Gomes

Interested in knowing the difference. Maybe we now will be able to add own feeds?

    • xirit64

And #disable-smooth-scrolling got renamed to #smooth-scrolling and reseted.

      • x a

Hmm. I had #disable-smooth-scrolling set, thus smooth scrolling disabled, previously. Now #smooth-scrolling is “enabled”, but hey, did sluggish old smooth-scroll all of a sudden get so subtle I don’t even recognize it?
        Or do I miss something?

        • xirit64

Don’t know about it, I noticed that (annoying) effect immediately then gone to the flags (with a bit of agony) to disable it again 🙂

    • RafaellaG

What I want to know is why there’s a new #rate-opera flag when there’s already a #surveys flag that could do the same?

      • BK

it’s internal development playground, don’t intended to be consistent, meaningful, helpful, etc.. sorry 😉

  • Laga Mahesa

Is there some way to reset the ad blocker whitelist? I nuked it before realizing the impact it has on, say, searching on Google.

    • Aneta Reluga

Just delete (or rename, if you want to be on the safe side) the file “adblocker_rules.json” from your profile. After a while, you should have the fresh whitelist.

      • Laga Mahesa

I wonder if we’re thinking of different things here. I meant the “Manage exceptions…” dialog. That’s the one that’s blank at the moment, and I’d like to repopulate it with the defaults.

  • Cryio

“Windows x64 experimental version is temporarily unavailable. We are experiencing issues with this version and they need to be fixed.”

    Was it ever available?

  • Cryio

    In 2nd picture:

    With ads: 12:53 minutes
    Without ads: 2:12 minutes => 53% faster.

What kind of math is that?

    • http://www.youtube.com/user/max1cp?feature=mhum Maxim

I think that’s seconds. But that image is weird.

    • BK

That’s what happens when designers do the the math.. 🙂 It’s not screenshot, it’s design outcome.

  • tarkus

Today I made the (feared by me) switch from win 8.1 to 10. Then I noticed something: Opera, when not in full screen mode, cannot be wide enough to cover the whole screen width (not hight). No matter what I do, there is always a desktop strip left to the right or left edge of the screen (or both). In a few words, I cannot make Opera 1200 pixels wide, I only succeed in reaching almost 1150 pixels and then it stops widening. It doesn’t happen with Edge, Firefox, Chrome or Vivaldi. I may neglect something, my question may be stupid or naive but…did anyone faced that problem and is there a setting I have to change? Thanks.

    • escruting

Yes, i have had this problem too since Windows 10 launched. But this is not an Opera problem, if you use more programs you will find that it also happens on other programs like skype, utorrent, even with the file explorer windows.

This is related to the window snapping feature and is very annoying.

What i did is change the window border padding with a program (win aero tweaks, or something like that) to a lower padding and its a lot less noticeable than the default padding.

      • RafaellaG

        Also confirmed here (Win10 x64).

It does even happening with Windows-Explorer.
But it does not happen with iTunes. Don’t know why.

  • Luis Amaral

Installed the latest version and not only was I logged out of the website but I cant login back. Reinstalling previous version

    • Luis Amaral

I wanted to mean websites… Several forums that I read got logged out and cant login because of errors or cookies problems.

    • RafaellaG

Logged out from which website? What operating system?

      • Luis Amaral

win10. Got logged out even from disqus here and I was only able to login using the FB option. I usually log with my disqus account but a window opens with gears turning and then closes and nothing happens.

        • RafaellaG

I also use Win10. No problems here.

But for all websites where you “login” you’ll have to enable cookies, so they can remember, that you logged in.^^

If you generally disabled cookies you’ll have at least make exceptions (e.g. [*.]disqus.com /clear on exit) for that sites you want to login.

          • Luis Amaral

reinstalled 2163 and everything is working again.
Note that I installed the 64bit version of 2163 and previous to that the older developer versions. They are installed in different folders of course Program files (x86) and Program files for the 64bit. It worked going from the 32bit to the 64bit why wouldnt it work going from the 64bit back to the 32bit version.
The cookies are enabled for all sites.

          • RafaellaG

Maybe it has something to do with this:

            — Windows x64 experimental version is temporarily unavailable. We are experiencing issues with this version and they need to be fixed.

If you downloaded it before it got unavailable, it could explain your problem (as long as you used the x64 version).

          • Luis Amaral

I aactually reinstalled the 64bit version of 2163 and everything is working again. Will wait for the next version next week.

  • Ralf Brinkmann

What is the Windows patch file for?

    • x a

On the ftp server, you mean? It’s the incremental update file, providing the differences between indicated builds rather than a full installation package.

  • Ralf Brinkmann

The download manager page is still unusable and made only for tennis elbow lovers. Now tabbing around by keyboard possible.
Flash problems are still the same (mouse operation).
Black squares and full black pages everywhere (Flash pages, Facebook…).

  • tarkus
    • RafaellaG

If you maximize Opera than you got exactly the second result.

      • tarkus

But only then! Vivaldi has it & Firefox has an extension to do the same thing, even not in full screen. The space above the tabs is really useless & the actual browsing window smaller! I don’t see absolutely no use for that ‘dead’ strip – I don’t have any problem (as Vuxx777 suggests) to click & drag windows either in full screen or in window mode. I believe all ‘blind’ spaces must be removed.

        • Herr Pietrus

Are you joking? That “useless empty space” is a place for a menu and window buttons which – when the browser is maximized – occupy the bar where the tabs are displayed. No empty space = less space for tabs! (and ugly look)

          • tarkus

The ‘useless empty space’ – if you’ve seen the images I’ve posted, is between ‘O Menu’ and the Widows buttons. Have you ever seen – in full screen or in a window – a tab exactly under the windows buttons? So, your problem must be with Menu (i.e. one less tab). That can be solved by showing only ‘O’ without the description ‘Menu’. How other browsers (for example Edge, Vivaldi, FF) manage to do the same thing?

    • Vux777

probably because in window mode you need to have some “meat” to click and drag window

  • Nico

Thank you for fixing the context menu on Speed Dial (Win 10 Theme). That was fast and it looks much better now! 🙂

  • Kai Ockendorf

No 64bit for Windows this time? that’s too bad 🙁 I deleted the 32bit one & wanted to stay on 64bit… waited much too long for it…so I’ll wait for the next 64bit version…hopefully next build 😉

    • xirit64

64-bit is awesome, when you do the adblocking test you can see it renders pages much faster than the 32-bit. I hope they ‘ll work more on it so that it won’t remain “experimental” forever 🙂

      • Kai Ockendorf

Yeah! Fingers crossed for that 🙂

    • Marcin Mitek

Sorry. It should be fixed before the next developer release. We didn’t want to stop the release because of it, as we still consider it as “experimental”.

      • RafaellaG

        It shouldn’t be experimental^^

      • Kai Ockendorf

Thanks for your hard work & always keep an eye on the 64bit versions 🙂

  • Юлия

Spped-dial bug when ‘Adjust Speed Dial animations for slower hardware’ setting is enabled:
    https://i.imgur.com/VsCa2RH.gif
The setting also does not stick after restart; it looks enabled in the Settings page, but animations not disabled.

    • xirit64

I think they are aware of it (is happening in all streams since O36 was dev) and is on top of that reported as DNA-50091.

    • Tommy Wille

The second one is a known issue as xirit64 said. I reported the other bug for you, DNA-50928.

  • Peter

Great update 😀 Cool design, i was waiting for this! Thanks!

  • xirit64

    @Opera Team:
Are there any plans blocking the advertisement videos that are playing before the actual videos? For example: http://www.pcgames.de/Videos/

    • Kai Ockendorf

That would be more than awesome!!! Video ads are so anoying!

    • Leonardo Gomes

      It would be nice.

  • SiMcarD

With ad blocker in this site http://www.gazzetta.it/ most of the elements opens an ad page instead of the right content.

    • Kornelia

You’re on Win10 right? I cannot confirm this behaviour on our local machine. Maybe you’ve got some other extensions installed?

      • SiMcarD

Yes, Win10 x64. I tried with all extension disabled. Same thing.
For example if I click on the videos on the top of the page opens another site (I suppose the ad site) in the same tab.

  • Vlad

Guys, I suggest to embed the image viewer right in the browser. When opening a JPG, PNG, GIF, WebP etc. image, then scrolling the mouse wheel increases/decreases the image. The left mouse button you can pan around the image (like in PDF readers, Photoshop Hand Tool, Google Map Panning Hand, scrolling a smart phone, Grab-and-Drag extension on Firefox etc.). Like in “Hand Tool” extension for Chrome: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/hand-tool/paflchebahgbgeambpbhoieeanaddehf?utm_source=chrome-app-launcher-info-dialog
I guess, it would be very convenient! As in any image viewer.
Today, no other browser doesn’t offer similar features navigation. You would be the first! What do you think about this?

    • Stanislav Stratil

I just thought about this yesterday, and I totally agree.

It would be great to have this implemented in the browser, also with some picasa-like smooth zooming.

  • shane

Can you list the ‘flash videos user interface broken’ as a known issue with these builds and/or provide a roadmap to a fix?

    • Wando Schneider

      How to reproduce?

      • shane

Try to use the seek bar or other controls on this video: http://www.androidauthority.com/raspberry-pi-3-review-678323/

The same broken behaviour is experienced for every flash video. It has been broken for over a month.

        • Wando Schneider

          It’s working fine here. W10 x64 (with Opera x32) and flash 20.0.0.306.

          • shane

            I am using W10 Opera x32 and flash version: 21,0,0,191. (
            C:WINDOWSSysWOW64
            MacromedFlashpepflashplayer32_21_0_0_191.dll)
. Perhaps you are using the deprecated NPAPI version of flash.

It doesn’t work for me and I have seen at least one other person comment that it is a known issue, although Opera hasn’t acknowledged it.

Perhaps it is a bug with flash rather than Opera. It seems to relate to the mouse pointer location being offset to the wrong location.

          • Vux777

            hmmm I have 21… 182
and controls are fine on video you posted (win10, beta and dev)

          • xirit64

No problems on W7/64-bit either. Latest flash is 21.0.0.182, perhaps you are using a beta?

          • shane

Looks like it is a beta version – I must have installed the beta stream back when it was the only option for a PPAPI plugin.

I will try uninstall and install the .182 version when I next get a chance.

          • Leonardo Gomes

I have the same problem with .182.

          • Leonardo Gomes

Btw, what build of Windows 10 do you have?

          • shane

I uninstalled .192 and installed .182, the problem still persists.

I thought it might be due to Windows 10 scaling as I have a HDPI screen. However the problem still exists when setting this to 100%. I have Opera zoom set at 100% in both cases. Using windows 10 version 1511 build 10586.104.

Works fine in Chrome using the same plugin. It used to work fine in Opera using older builds – it broke about 4 or 5 versions back.

          • Leonardo Gomes

I said once that it’s known because it was reported before.

Doesn’t seem to be a Flash issue as it works fine in other browsers.

          • Ralf Brinkmann

How do you do that trick? That means, you can for example click on any position in the timeline of the video and the video will jump to this position?

          • Wando Schneider

Absolutely nothing 😀 Yes, I can.

          • RafaellaG

Works fine here too. Win10x64 with Flash PPAPI 21.0.0.182 (no NPAPI).

          • Ralf Brinkmann

Have you both flash versions installed on your computer, NPAPI and PPAPI? Or have you changed settings in Opera:flags for NPAPI and PPAPI?

          • Wando Schneider

I’m using PPAPI (C:WINDOWSSysWOW64MacromedFlashpepflashplayer32_21_0_0_182.dll) and i haven’t change any settings regarding NPAPI.

          • Ralf Brinkmann

My question was not, what you use, but what you have installed on your computer. If you use Opera, Chrome and Firefox for example, then you need both flash versions, NPAPI and PPAPI.

          • Wando Schneider

            I have NPAPI installed.

        • deus-ex

Same issues here as reported by Shane (Win10 x64). Tested Flash PAPI 21.0.0.191, 21.0.0.182 and 20.0.0.306. Older versions won’t run but request to update. Right-click video, choose “Settings” from pop-up, “Adobe Flash Player Settings” menu opens but cannot be accessed or closed.

        • Ralf Brinkmann

Indeed. It’s the same problem I described here: http://www.opera.com/blogs/desktop/2016/03/opera-developer-37-0-2171-0-update/#comment-2575071500. And in older postings in the last versions. Actual W10x64, actual Opera x32 and actual Flash Player 21.0.0.182.

          • Wando Schneider

            Flash 21x is beta, right?

          • Ralf Brinkmann

No, it’s the normal standard version and was automatically updated: https://www.adobe.com/de/software/flash/about/

          • Wando Schneider

Right. i’m using this version on this machine and it’s working just fine.

          • RafaellaG

21.0.0.182 is default. 21.0.0.191 is beta

        • RafaellaG

          Works fine here (Win10 x64 version 1511 build 10586.164).
With PPAPI Flash Player 21.0.0.182 & also with PPAPI Beta Flash Player 21.0.0.191. (No NPAPI installed).

          • Ralf Brinkmann

I have uninstalled NPAPI now, restarted the computer and Opera, emptied the cache and tried again.

Opera: No mouse operation possible, I can not jump to any location in the timeline or call open the icons in the lower right corner. Even not with all extensions, adblockers and so on switched off.

Google Chrome: I can play and operate the video by keyboard and by mouse, use the settings icons in the lower right corner, jump to any point in the timeline and so on. Even with all extensions and adblockers (the same as in Opera) switched on.

Firefox: I can start playing the video, but nothing else. I think, this is a kind of emergency modus in case the flash player is not installed. Extension and adblocker like in Opera.

Vivaldi: I can play and operate the video by keyboard and mouse, like Google Chrome. The same extensions and adblockers installed (if necessary) and switched on as in Opera.

          • RafaellaG

            Strange.

            Edit:
You could try to rename the userdata folder and try again.

          • Ralf Brinkmann

I have installed Opera to a new, empty directory c:program files (x86) opera developer as USB standalone installation now with a fresh, virgin profile folder and did not import any settings, bookmarks and extensions or change any flags. The same result. I can not use the mouse for flash files and not start them, if there is a PLAY button on the screen.

          • RafaellaG

Then I unfortunately have no idea any more.

          • Wando Schneider

Really strange. I have updated my NPAPI to 21x, and i’m using PPAPI 21x (both the last stable version), using Opera x32 on W10 10586.164 x64 and everything is working fine.

          • Ralf Brinkmann

What about the videos on http://www.lustigestories.de/fun/videos/? If there is a kind of START button or PLAY, I can not watch them in Opera.

          • RafaellaG

Works fine (first video “Smokin’ kills !”). First there’s a loading animation after which you can start the video.

          • Wando Schneider

            Working fine here.

          • Leonardo Gomes

Do you have system dpi set to anything higher than 100%? I’ve just checked and with system dpi at 100% the issue doesn’t reproduce here but happens with dpi set to 125%.

            @disqus_zNR3gDhovu:disqus @ralfbrinkmann:disqus @wandoschneider:disqus what about yours?

          • deus-ex

Leonardo Gomes, thank you for the hint. I have system dpi set to 200% on my 3840×2160 display. I can confirm when setting system dpi to 100% the Flash video interface is working again. It breaks with any dpi scaling other than 100%. This is clearly an Opera issue as Flash video is not affected by the dpi setting in Firefox, IE and Chrome.

    • Victoria

I’m also having an issue with flash controls not working. I can pause and unpause and that’s about it. Running on Win 10 x64 with the most recent ver. of both Opera Next and Flash PPAPI.

Flash videos work fine in both Chrome and Firefox. I even tried switching with the user agent extension and it didn’t work.

  • x a

I can confirm: DNA-49964 Speed dial extensions blank in latest developer build seems to be fixed here, ie speed dial extensions working again.

  • Alex

I still hope for fix DNA-50683. But it seems getting closer the day of farewell with Opera 🙁

    • Kornelia

Hi Alex, I’ll forwarded your problem to our developers. You’ve created the bug few days ago, so give us a chance to look at the problem and solve it before saying goodbye 😉

  • qwerzaq

add your adblock filters so that you can manually block ads on a page

добавьте в adblock свои фильтры, чтобы можно было блокировать вручную рекламу на странице

  • Leonid Frolov

Developers, should I expect sone continuation of SD development in near future? I am waiting for autozoom option for a long time.

  • iamtelephone

Is the URL bar suppose to be smaller in this release? On Linux it appears to have shrunk a few pixels and is now using a smaller font.

  • http://spillbits.no/ Einar Holten

I made a comment in the first post about the ad-block feature.

The subscribe button on YouTube doesn’t work when the ad-block is enabled.

Tested in Win7/10 x64 with the 32-bit version of Opera. No changes for this build.

    • Tommy Wille

Works fine here. Do you have any other extensions installed?

      • http://spillbits.no/ Einar Holten

Only Adblock Plus which which is disabled because of the native one. The solution from Kornelia worked for me.

        • beBoss

Use uBlock Origin it’s better and lighter!

          • RafaellaG

Not helpful for him if he wants to use the build-in feature.
Also not helpful for the Opera-Team to erase their bugs and make it a better feature

          • http://spillbits.no/ Einar Holten

I don’t quite understand this comment. You are not the only one doing this tho. So don’t feel like being targeted.

I am here to test a feature for a developer version. And to improve it and eliminate bugs. So I am not here to try different ad blockers. There is no reason to post such a comment, so why bother. Stop wasting our time.

    • Kornelia

      Thanks, reported.

    • Kornelia

Ok, @eholten:disqus, seems like we know how to solve this problem – you need to remove adblocker_rules.json from your profile folder. I had the same issue and now subscription works fine.

      • http://spillbits.no/ Einar Holten

Yes, this worked. Had to restart browser after removing the file. It was recreated after restart and I was able to subscribe again.

        • Kornelia

          Great 🙂

  • xirit64

    @Opera Team
Have you abandoned that interesting idea of saving the downloaded files automatically in the corresponded created folders (exe, zip, pdf, jpg, etc…) inside the download location? I found it very unique and useful, it would save me a huge lot of that “sorting and moving task” time.

    • Ralf Brinkmann

Oh no, please not! If I sort and move my downloaded files, then I move them to the installation folders on harddisk E: (e:files).

      • xirit64

To the installation folders? I’m hearing that for the first time, that’s wierd and dangerous, if you uninstall a program you could lose all your content. The right thing to do is keep your personal files independent, on other drives (if possible). Not even in My Documents, aka on the same drive with the OS, because of viruses, spoofing, OS corruption, etc.

        • Ralf Brinkmann

I think you misunderstood me. I have my normal drive c: with Windows, Program Files, Program Files (x86), Program data and so on. And I have another harddisc where I created a folder “files” to store all my installation files, in case I have to reinstall Windows and all my programs. The download folder (on again another drive) is only for downloading and checking files. After that I move these files either to the “files” folder into the respective programm installation directory or to my music, documents or video folder.

Installation folder is the folder, from which I install files. It’s not the program folder!

    • RafaellaG

If you download all in one directory and sort per extension it’s helpful.
But if you have to move all files from each (exe, zip, pdf,…) directory (and then delete each empty dir) it’s not really helpful and more work.

      So… please NO!

      • xirit64

You mean if you move all files to a folder hierarchy based on content? Yes it would be more work, but is it better doing so? I think it would be better if you do the content thing inside those folders, for example downloadspdfcooking recipes, downloadspdfebooks, downloadsexeutilities

        • RafaellaG

No I download all files in the same directory.
          It’s easier for me.

          • xirit64

You haven’t enlightened me much with this, you said above ” if you have to move all files from each (exe, zip, pdf,…) directory (and then delete each empty dir) it’s not really helpful and more work.” , now you are saying “I download all files in the same directory”. Please enlighten me 🙂

          • RafaellaG

Ok. If I want to keep them, I move them to another drive and directory. If I simply want to install them I’ll do it to the appropriate directory right away, etc.

And if there’s something left after all this I’ll delete the rest. Sometines at once, sometimes after 1 or 2 days.

I don’t need to keep the files in different sub-directories in the download dir. And to save same file types to another directory I simply order them by extension in the download directory, select them and copy them.

          • xirit64

All right, though this requires that you take immediate action after you download something, in the cases that you have plenty to download (work, etc), that you keep downloading stuff through several days or if you are lazy (not taking immediate action) then you are overwhelmed with the amount of files and the sorting-moving job.

          • RafaellaG

German: “Was du heute kannst besorgen, verschiebe nicht auf morgen”

            approximately in English:
“Make hay while the sun shines.” 😉

      • Herr Pietrus

        Exactly!
Fortunately Opera devs are aware of it! 🙂

    • Davey126

This is beyond the reach of a browser IMO and different than every other major player. I want my downloads from all browsers in the folder I designate – not scattered across multiple subfolders based on where someone else thinks they should go. Nor do I want some complex dialog to ‘help’ me decide where everything should go.

      • xirit64

A cross-compatibility non existent “standard” between (competitive) browsers as an argument for how Opera ASA does it best for their users, that was funny and unique 🙂

        • Davey126

Never said “standard”. Simply pointing out common practice followed by an opinion supporting that practice.

    • Herr Pietrus

I suppose that there was no such idea – they only needed tat folders to develop new download page with the categories.

And that’s good because saving the files with different folders was really annoying.

    • Bonnox

you mean a folder for each extension? it could be done using the explorer’s filters. 😉

  • Вадік Дудар

Please, work on download manager. Add multi-threading.

    • tarkus

I agree 100%, downloads are too slow!

      • Leonardo Gomes

Downloads are kinda fast for me. Depending on the server, of course.

        • tarkus

Downloading from the same server (Zippyshare) the same file (~110 MB) I noticed a ~10% lower speed compared to the native FF download manager, while downloading the same file with the external Internet download manager (multi-theaded), the speed went sky-high!

          • Вадік Дудар

            Exactly what I mean.
Firefox with downthemall plugin with 5threads for one download shows very fast speed (while opera slows for about 50%)

          • Leonardo Gomes

Do you have a couple of example links?

          • tarkus

I have a VDSL connection and the following timed results are only comparative and in relation to my network connection speed.
            Download these:
            1. http://www113.zippyshare.com/v/Rpe5qYJc/file.html
            File size: 136.45 Mb
            Timed results, as follows:
Internet Download Manager (external multi-thread accelerator) > download time – 38″
Opera native downloader > download time – 1:34″ (2,47 times slower)
            2. http://www53.zippyshare.com/v/uyYWeWyW/file.html
            File size: 106.3 Mb
            Timed results, as follows:
Internet Download Manager (external multi-thread accelerator) > download time – 30″
Opera native downloader > download time – 1:08″ (2,17 times slower)
By the way, you can keep the music – it’s great!

          • Leonardo Gomes

I’ve tried with Opera 12 and Opera 37 and the first seemed faster at a first glance.

I guess that allowing more connections to a server may be something that should be handle by Chromium, not sure how much Opera could change it.

          • tarkus

I’m not expecting Opera to completely replace my download accelerator (IDM), after all it’s not what it is supposed to do, but there are sites that do not work with accelerators and Opera takes ages to download files (don’t take the particular server as a measure, it’s way above the average in speed)!

          • Вадік Дудар

I know about sites with restrictions for connections to server, but, maybe, do something with algorithm? (Opera tries open multiple threads for downloading, but server not allowed multithreading – opera still download in one thread) Why not?
In fact, one thing to do – add multi-threading GET connections. If server don`t respond on it – opera still continue downlolad first (and only one) thread.

          • BK

Not only we CAN change Blink, we have been doing it for quite a long time – in fact Opera is second after Google contributor to Blink.
            http://operasoftware.github.io/upstreamtools/

          • SQL

That site has unfortunately been broken ever since Blink (the repository) got merged inside Chromium itself. Before there was a separate repo for blink but now it’s inside the chromium repo, so that site is sort of broken.. Currently “Chromium” has both chromium and blink changes in it.

No idea if anyone is really interested in maintaining that site anymore, but i wouldn’t mind a fix.. :p

          • Bonnox

            cool B)

            off topic:
do you make the “war of the biggest number of commits”?

            nah, just kidding. :^

          • Вадік Дудар

Opera just don`t open additional threads. I think change this is not very hard… 🙂 Please

        • Bonnox

and on your connection, obviously 😉

    • jg che

      Agree +1

    • Aneta Reluga

I’ve pushed your suggestion to the developers and let’s see what happens.

    • x a

By ”multi-threaded“ you mean multiple connections?

      • Вадік Дудар

Yes. Multiple segment downloading like in any download accelerators. Especially like in down them all for Firefox.

  • x a

The possibility to select ”All your languages“ from the context menu in text fields must be new. Great to have! But ist does not seem to work right now. [Win10/64]

Two suggestions on speed dial: 1. Can you make the animations a bit quicker when switching page on the left menu? 2. When you hover the mouse over a button on the panel, please make the cursor a pointer 🙂

    • Hylian Ticipated

All this, and more importantly please add a Downloads button to the column so we can access this page without going to the Menu.

      • Leonardo Gomes

Start Page settings > Navigation > check “Downloads”.

        • Hylian Ticipated

          I swear I checked! Cool.

  • Marko Koivuniemi

Still annoying bug or feature: When you have windows and Facebook tab on top. And you work in another window. Then you got Facebook message and you try to choose facebook window using window-menu. This Facbook tab blinks “Facebook…” and “(1) Message from” and therefore this windows changes location in window list which is ordered alphabetically.
Another feature I would like is to give colors or symbols or names in window and then tab menu option: “Move to “Yellow”. Dragging and dropping is not so handy – I would even like to disable it because quite often I actually drag tabs outside of window by mistake.

Opera is not opening insiderhub protocol: https://sway.com/mNCInMc1lDitdaVK
Scroll down and you will find this text:

“Head to the Quest section of the Feedback Hub for more details about our
    vision!”

Click the link and Opera should opens the insider hub app, but it isn’t, shows this error:

“Opera was unable to open the link since no application associated with insiderhub: protocol was found”

    • Leonardo Gomes

You need to associate a program with that protocol so those links can be opened in that program.

      • beBoss

        Works with Edge, so?

        • Leonardo Gomes

So both are Microsoft products? So they are supposed to work together?

Opera can’t handle those different protocols, it just can pass the data to another program.

          • beBoss

Funny! What about Vivaldi, Chrome and Firefox? Are they Microsoft’s products? Because it works with them!

          • Leonardo Gomes

I was talking about it working on Edge and that was all.Never said it doesn’t work on other browsers.

          • ricksper

      Confirmed. I’ll report this issue.

Can anyone help me with this flag: “Platform hardware accelerated video decoding”?

I enabled it on Win 10 x64, but nothing happens… I don’t get the built in AVC (mp4) hw accelerated videos on Youtube for instance… In order to get AVC, I have to disable “Media Source API” and so I did. What exactly the first flag I mentioned does?

    • Leonardo Gomes

It should be enabled by default.

The flag will not make you get avc/h264 videos on Youtube or any other site, it will just make hardware acceleration to be used on videos if your system supports it.

This is what i understand of this flag.

  • Vux777
    • Marko Koivuniemi

I’m not sure can I confirm or not. It has happened but I blame my Macbook going to sleep. I think it has not happened when I use normally.

      • Vux777

here happens usually when logging off google account, and on HTTPS sites

        • Aneta Reluga

This is a network connection issue AFAIK – the browser just reacts to the ERR_CONNECTION_RESET error, but does not trigger it.

          • Vux777

I can’t remember seeing that in beta…but last week I’m using dev mostly and it happens couple of times a day…usually when I’m logging in/off some services (gmail, paypal….)

          • Aneta Reluga

I’m using dev at the moment, but probably my page scope is sort of limited, because I have no such occurrences (at home I’m using dev almost exclusively and I can see such error maybe once per several weeks). I’d have to compare with other browsers with exactly the same page (unless it is non-repeatable on refresh, then it will be harder).

          • Vux777

yea, refresh fix it… those kinda things are hard to track
maybe it’s something on my side…I’ll switch to beta and see if it happens

    • Leonardo Gomes

I see it happening sometimes. Usually reloading the page solves the issue.

  • José Alberto

i`m tester dev version and i find that you didn`t put an option to block ads so I can not block ads that scapes to your control. so this is what you shoud use adblock professional….

    • Aneta Reluga

This feature is still in its development phase.

  • Licaon_Kter

Is the ‘right click on bookmark folder->open all in new tabs->nothing happens’ a known issue (Windows only) or not?

    • Vux777

open all works, but middle click doesn’t (win10)
edit: on bookmarks bar… I see now that it doesn’t on bookmark manager

      • Marcin Mitek

Tracked as DNA-51102, thank you 🙂

  • José Alberto

Devs, why don´t you spend your time in add-on-sync? be professional and don´t wast time doing something that another professionals do better that you, like ad block add.ons (adguard, ad block plus, ublock….).

    • BK

The thing is, whatever others on adblock are doing, we are doing it faster 🙂

      • http://www.youtube.com/user/max1cp?feature=mhum Maxim

Does faster = better though? Can you please tell us of the Opera teams concerns on filters breaking sites if there are any?

        • BK

Our thinking is – it’s webdevs that should deliver good websites experience without annoying ads. If they implement sites that break when you remove the ads, too bad for them, we expect users to move to the sites where they can get good quality content.

          • http://www.youtube.com/user/max1cp?feature=mhum Maxim

Fair enough. Thank you for the explanation.

    • Bonnox

i completely agree with the first half of the post, and partially disagree with the latter.

1)extension syncronization would be a real time-saviour (and also “killer”) feature, expecially for those who reinstall the OS often.

      2) they are working hard to improve the browser, even if slowly (there’s still a lot to do). this is enough to appreciate their work.

  • Jake

First of all, thanks for the latest update!

The touch keyboard still doesn’t pop up when selecting text-fields (e.g. address bar) via touch screen. It’s been working already in past builds but disappeared somewhere around Opera 35/36.
I assume this is not intended. Would be nice if you could fix this as it makes using Opera in Tablet mode without a physical keyboard attached quite uncomfortable.

    My system: Surface Pro 3, Win10 10586 x64, Opera 37.0.2171.0

    • Tommy Wille

      Yep, known issue.

      • Jake

Alright. Wasn’t completely sure as it has been present for a quite a while now, although this one being unknown still seemed really unlikely.

  • http://www.pocchong.de/ Kiyoko Kisaragi

ad block: it would be nice if I can see what exactly are blocked and choose specific contents to block, just like how the “classic” Opera behaves.

    • BK

why would you like to bother? What use of this you would make?

      • RafaellaG

She’s curious (for the ‘what exactly are blocked’ part).
        Me too^^

      • Bonnox

to get something something like the printliminator.

  • Vlad

    My little suggestion =)
Pressing the middle mouse button in this area opens a new tab: http://jpegshare.net/fd/d0/fdd0f886d801c658c83e9e30a5825699.png.html
It’s convenient because you don’t need to aim for the small plus sign to the right of the tabs. As implemented in Firefox.

    • xirit64

You mean like in Opera Presto 🙂
Anyway that’s why you have mouse gestures in Opera 🙂

      • Vlad

I mean like in Firefox 😉

        • xirit64

We are Opera fans in this blog so we compare everything to the previous Opera (Presto) in the first place, and since Opera Presto had it most probably before Firefox as many other things too (like browsing with tabs), that’s the correct way of saying it and not yours 🙂

          • Vlad

            Who cares?

          • ayespy

            Opera fans.

  • PaulW

Can’t see this is the outstanding issues but on both my Win 10 and win 7 PCs I can’t do a print preview. I just see “Loading Preview” Looked in the adblock area but can’t see anything that would stop it. Am I missing something??

    • RafaellaG

It’s the same here (Win10 x64). Also the preview window is overlapping with the address bar for exactly the grey line/space under the address input field.

  • Pavol

Dear Opera. With such a wide screen everyone of us have, we don’t need address bar to be like 1200px wide or even more; would you please make some customization so we can use half of its size as a space for our bookmark bar (bookmarks, folders, etc…). Please!

    • BK

We are actually putting some features there, stay tuned.

    • Bonnox

just install some extensions, and it will gently reduce 😉

  • lassekongo83

A small request. Please fix this chromium issue: https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=168175
Many of the Google devs don’t seem to care about it. Beforescriptexecute and afterscriptexecute are official html5 events that should be supported. This would make it easier for addons like uBlock Origin to block certain annoying inline scripts. Firefox can already do this. More sites will probably use annoying inline anti-adblock scripts, so this would be a great feature to have when native adblocking arrives. 😉

  • Jiem Kram

How about support for 1 finger swipe with the Magic Mouse on a Mac to browse one page forwards or backwards? This function disappeared a few versions ago, but I don’t see anybody complaining about this. Is it just me with this problem?

  • Licaon_Kter

Since the last 2 or 3 dev releases, I’ve got extensions like: https://addons.opera.com/en/extensions/details/github-notifier/ and https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/autopatchwork/aeolcjbaammbkgaiagooljfdepnjmkfd getting auto-disabled after a while.
Is this a known thing (Windows build only) or any idea on how to track the reason why it gets disabled?

  • skpy

and if those measurement frames/boxes were in dark color, how would you see it on dark background?

      • Vlad

        Maybe need some smart mode?

        • Vux777

like analyzing dominant colors on image and changing background based on that?

-first, it would be overkill for native browser feature

-second, it would never work 100% correct, too much diversity and different combinations.
In that particular example from your post, problem is in tiny lines on transparent background. It is designer decision to made them that way, and that image probably have layers under it to look good on page environment

      I like it.

  • Ralf Brinkmann

What about https://forums.opera.com/ ? I can not reach these sites with Opera, only with other browsers. Anybody else or is this just my problem?

      I can’t open O-forums if I’m logged in…some bug with cookies

      • Ralf Brinkmann

I deleted all flash cookies, one forums.opera.com and the cache. Then I could get on.

  • Dmitry Kirin

When the download popup appears, it brings the entire Opera window to front. Normally, it’s not noticeable, as the browser window is already active. However, when you download a big file from mega.nz, it is initially downloaded to the local storage, and only when that download is complete, it starts copying the file to the download location. You may have Opera in background at that time. Along with the download popup, Opera suddenly jumps forth.
I think it would better not bring the window to front at that time.

  • Ralf Brinkmann

No easter egg today? No birthday edition? No new toy for rainy days?

I waited also something. I think Opera is in danger to become too normal (=boring) company – and I miss those days when there was more special builds, funny campaigns and more humor – Odd and Even etc.. Browser war is serious business but still.

  • MountainGoat

I’ve checked with the 37-0-2171-0 opera-developer on debian linux 3.16.0-4-686-pae (testing distribution):
    1. right click on a displayed pdf file causes an immediate crash. This is reproducible behavior that happens 100% of the time

    2. right click on any page to print / save gets stuck in the “loading previewer” message and never proceeds (however, interrupting this by clicking on “print with system dialog” still works)

Both problems were fixed when I downgraded to 37.0.2163.0.

Both of these problems are a significant regression from the previous version and, because they happen every time, 100% reproducible and easy to regression test in the future.

Why is the Chromium-specific drag-to-tabs-bar action not available for currently selected in-page text? It’s a simpler action than right-click + click “Search”, plus it allows me to choose where exactly I want the new tab to appear in case I don’t want it right after the current one.

And what’s with the cluttered Recent Tabs menu, listing the currently open tabs in there as well? I can already see the currently open tabs on the tabs bar – the Recent Tabs menu should be only for closed tabs. Or, if you must use a collapsible list inside it, make the Open Tabs section collapsible because that’s the part that’s not quite so useful in there and which many users will want to keep collapsed.

    LE:
Also, the default search engines should be at least reconfigurable if not deletable – I want to use “d” for searching a dictionary website, not for DuckDuckGo, and in the future I might find better uses for “b” and “z” than searching with Bing and Amazon. Single-letter search prefixes are the most efficient, why would you block an arbitrary subset of those so they can’t be customized?

    • Leonardo Gomes

If you mean tp drag a text to tab bar to start a search then it works here.

Tab menu (and not Recent Tabs Menu) may not be that useful for those with just a few tabs opened but can be very useful for those with a lot of opened tabs.

      • Don Joe

Not in the Linux version 36.0.2130.32 it doesn’t – when I drag selected text up to the tabs bar nothing happens. And there’s nothing in the changelog for v37 about this either, so I don’t think anyone’s been looking at the issue.

        LE:
Yep, tried the above-mentioned developer version as well and no dice – dragging text to the tabs bar does exactly nothing.

There is problem with any release of Opera. For sites running Moodle. Once login and password are saved for such site, Opera autocompletes it everywhere it’s is not supposed to be. For example, if you go to course settings you see Opera autocompletes Course ID Number with your site login (!), Guest access (when enabled and empty password) Opera filles in with your password from your site account (!). That is wrong. Autocomplete should fill in login and password only on main page or on login/index.php in Moodle.

When will there be a built-in translator websites in Opera

когда будет ли встроенный переводчик веб-сайтов в Opera

    • Leonardo Gomes

I wouldn’t say never but i would say it may have very low chances of happening as it would depend on agreements with a translation service.

Also, i don’t think a built-in feature for this would be better than an existing extension.

    • Dmitry Kirin

Add a new “search engine” with the working url http://translate.google.ru/#auto/ru/%s. You will be able to send selected text to Google Translate. The source code #auto means it will try translating from any language.

Добавь поисковую систему с url http://translate.google.ru/#auto/ru/%s. Это позволит выделять текст и легко отправлять его в гуглопереводчик. Хоть и криво, зато чисто стандартными средствами Оперы.)

Yes, its not a constant problem. Just happens sometimes. It happened only once to me, reloading the tab did nothing, only loaded fine when i opened the same video on a new tab. But the fact that it happened exactly the same way to other users shows that its something that should be fixed.

Opera no longer responds to keyboard input and gestures except for the address bar after right-clicking on an element in device mode.

    Steps to reproduce:
    1. Install fresh copy of Opera Developer 37.0.2171.0, portable installation.
    2. Go to this page : https://bugs.opera.com/wizard/desktop
    3. Ctrl-Shift-C for the dev tools.
    4. Click ‘element.style’ in the styles section of the dev tools, and confirm the keyboard responds. No need to press return.
    5. Click around the page, activate controls, RIGHT-click on elements without selecting an option in the context menu. Repeat step 4 with every action.
    6. Click ‘Toggle device mode’. Repeat step 4 – keyboard should still work.
    7. Right-click an element – one of the inputs. Do not select an option in the context menu.
    8. Repeat step 4. Keyboard no longer responds.

  • Jademarisa

I’ll just repeat the same question I’ve posed in Opera 36 thread:Is giving us a classic menu bar against developers’ or owners’ religion? No way of getting a decent menu and getting rid of awful Opera button? Does allowing users to really customise Opera with Opera SKINS (not Chrome “themes”) break any unbreakable moral rule? Just asking… (Unless Opera changes this and develops a true own personality it will still be Chrome in disguise)

    • Leonardo Gomes

I think that a classic menu simply doesn’t fit in current browsers’design and also, IMHO, doesn’t bring any real benefit for majority of the users.

Not to mention that having two types of menus may cause confusion on users.

About customization in general, i think it would be nice to have some but it’s something that may require some efforts and planning to not cause problems and confusion like we used to see during Presto years and also to not turn Opera in sometyhing hard to mantain for the developers.

Btw, why Opera should have a menu bar and skins?

      • Jademarisa

Because many users would like and use them? You can talk for yourself if you don’t use a classic bar menu, good for you. Personally I don’t like sandwich menus and horizontal favourite bars. The point here is that if a browser wants (and needs, let’s be honest) to appeal to a big number of potential users, its design being versatile and customisable will appeal to a variety of potential users. As for “confusion” derived from the existence of two menus, you don’t need to use both at a time, you can CHOOSE (as it was possible in Opera 12-maybe you didn’t know you could disable one of them, it has always been possible FYI, I had the O menu disabled and the classic menu enabled) Can’t believe that you got “confused” because of the existence of choice. Of course it “shouldn’t” have two menu types. But it would be good, nice and user-friendly if it did.

        • Leonardo Gomes

Hmm, seeing that among the major browsers, Chrome doesn’t offer a menu bar and others like Firefox has the option to enable it kinda hidden couldn’t mean that not so many users are interested in having a menu bar?

And how a menu bar would benefit the (majority of) users? Would it worth the efforts to implement and keep it? Things like this should be taken in consideration.

        • Leonardo Gomes

Reagrding “confusion”, i was talking more about customization in general but it applies to menus too.

During Opera Presto years, it’s not uncommon to see people coming here or on the forums saying that they couldn’t see a new menu entry (or icon or toolbar) introduced in a new version. And after some investigation, they used to find out that it happened because they were using a custom menu (or toolbar).

So customization is good may be good but it may cause confusion.

    • Bonnox

I wrote a huge post in answer but thst stupid thing of discuss blocked it because it thought it was spam… -.-”
therefore i’m going to split in two parts, only the second is really related to your post, sorry, but I had to find where attach mine, and yours seem to have defined the topic.

      post below in self-answers.

      • Bonnox

to me, they could do (almost) anything they want, even if sometimes it irritates me (like the thousands of changes in the internal pages’ design), as long as the menu remains on the left. It feels really handful. During the opera 15 days, for me the transaction was a nightmare , because I had to wait a lot to new features to be introduced, but both opera 12 and chrome were, each in their sense, unpleasant in the user experience provided. the first had a great UI but poor rendering, the latter the opposite. I don’t actually know why, maybe it’s just a stupid “whim” (hope google translator did not make me do a bad impression, beacause I’m scared at any term I don’t perfectly know it gives me), but I find really unconfortable to “circumnavigate” the whole screen to target on a bad positioned button, while with “O” I just have to push to the edge, and surely will pick it right.

not to mention the bookmarks odissey wich anyone knows.

I then tried FireFox with remainders of many versions earlier in mind, but the whole program changed significantly during that time. the fact that copied chrome design and moved form the “F” button to the right-positioned “overflow button” made me upset quite a bit. I do hate when a software copies UI of another one’s, because it’s “selling” its personality, what it is inside the feeling of the user. And a curiosity, was Opera to dirstly intoduce this magic button at the corner? if so, FF copied again :p

now opera in about 36 has introducted this edge-like title bar, which I would personally like, if it only was less intrusive. Opera, keep at least a bit of your identity, while tring to follow the design guidelines! I know it’s difficult to properly design (and actually make) a complex software, but should remain more consistent with your history.

you could for example increase the “top margin” (the one mentioned in settings) by some pixel, and “un-fat” (sorry for the invented word) the icon at the left of address bar. well, they’re not actually fat, their “stroke” (java-like terminology, sorry) is indeed just a coulpe of pixel, but they look fat because of proportions in the content frame (the button) and between the image components itself as well. an example to clarify: “refresh” diameter too large, “back” angle too wide… and so on. or, at least this at first glance is what looks to me, because of the very small outline.

at least make the flag working. I tried to mess with some opera://flag regarding something like “native theme”, but nothing has changed. nor a pixel.

maybe this post is off topic (certainly will be), but I though it was a bit related so I unveiled my concern here, hoping someone will read.

        • Bonnox

returning in topic, the classic menu is quite a bit confusioning, because some might try to find a feature in the wrong menu, or maybe because this menu bar takes one row space of the screen, instead just a little piece near the tabs, so that no space is wasted at all. moreover, a browser is not a word processor, what’s the point of separate the actions in categories (not fully distinguishable among each other, moreover) ? almost every function in the current “O” menu is related to web browsing, so will nicely fit in one place together. Ah, and please, put “download new extensions” nested in “extension”. (woah, that might look obvious, but instead…), it clutter less, and is more rational/ordered.

tanks for reading this papyrus :p (do you use this expression figuratively for “long text”?)

          good night.

and God bless the “restore content-editable content” feature, another life-saving feature I think to remember opera inveted, don’t it? 😉
