I am happy to announce that Opera 36 has reached the beta status. Quite a number of changes here, known already to our developer users, and some even inspired by their feedback, including a serious redesign of the start-page and Windows 10 improvements. Please find more details in the following highlights:

New layout of the start page

Well known from the developer stream already, the new start-page layout is designed to improve the navigation ergonomics. The start-page navigation panel is now positioned on the left side. Also, the news and speed dial pages are now merged into one start-page easily configured by the “Customize start page” cogwheel option in the top right corner. Enthusiasts of the previous solution of having news and speed dial separated will still be able to opt out – if they turn off “News” in the start-page settings, there will be an additional news icon in the sidepanel for them to access:

News as Separate Option

Additionally, by popular demand among our developer users, if you turn on the “Show advanced settings” option in Settings > Browser > Advanced settings, you can notice additional options under the start-page settings cogwheel, which will effectively allow you to turn off pretty much everything (except the cogwheel and sidepanel themselves 🙂 ). Minimalist users should be really pleased by this one:

Start page clean view

Opera UI improvements for Windows 10 and touch screens

Now, Windows 10 users, particularly these using touch screens, can enjoy some substantial UI improvements. First of all, you can now control whether you want the system or Opera colors by switching the setting in Settings > Browser > Show system color on top bar:

Off and On examples

The touch screen users of Windows 10 will also have an additional icon for the full screen mode and bigger context menus when Opera was activated by touch:

Fullscreen button

Touch context menu

Extension expander

All users who tend to have many extensions and would like to access all of them even if the extensions don’t fit on the toolbar, should now be happy to have the extension toolbar expander ready. I’ll be repeating myself a bit, but nevertheless I have to do this: please note that the screenshot below contains quite a number of random (but nonetheless great for sure) extensions which are put there only for demonstration purposes 🙂

Extension toolbar expander

Themes configuration

It is easier now to visually select your theme: the themes carousel now appears in both the Settings > Basic panel and the “Show Advanced Settings” start-page configuration panel. You can select from both the installed themes and the Opera online themes:

Themes: Settings

Themes: SD settings

Synchronization improvements

Overall synchronization stability has been improved – the server connection is now more stable. Also, the synchronization button visibility has been tweaked so that it is not visible all the time.

We have also updated the Chromium version to 49.0.2623.23.

Known issues

We have a temporary issue with 32-bit Linux builds (both package types). Sincerest apologies. We will update the links as soon as the builds are ready – please stay tuned for updates.

  • L33t4opera

Hi Aneta, thanks for the article, and congrats on the promotion of the Opera 36 to the beta channel 😉

  • Roby

So your company might be changing owners soon huh?
Anyway, could you add a “Don’t remember history” option? Would be useful on a shared computer. In case I’m missing it enlighten me please.

    • Aneta Reluga

      Private mode.

      • Roby

Opening it up each time is not really an option…

        • Leonardo Gomes

You can login with your own username into the OS.

          • Roby

Making several accounts is still a heck of a lot more complicated and unnecessary compared to changing one setting.

          • Leonardo Gomes

Have your own OS account and make it for personal use only is probably one of the most basic rule to folow if you really care about privacy.
Specially when you have to share a computer with someone.

          • Roby

Which part of “complicated and unnecessary compared to changing one setting” do you not understand?
I have my reasons and I clearly said no. I hate it when people refuse to take no for an answer and try to force their opinion on me. Knock it off.
It’s a simple feature request which exists in other browsers, e.g. Firefox. Take it as that and move on.

That being said, since a lot of people and family hop on that computer on and off Firefox is indeed being used. I’d love to put Opera there instead but hey…

          • Leonardo Gomes

Conclusion: You don’t care about your provacy and is just acting like a spoiled child.

Please come back when you have grown up.

          • Marcin Mitek

Easy here, please don’t get personal. He has the right to his opinion, demands and vision on how browser should work.

            Let’s stay cool 🙂

          • Leonardo Gomes

            And i never said he hadn’t. 🙂

          • Roby

Glad your reached your conclusion and thank you very much for your concern. I have my personal password protected laptop.
Now then, I’d appreciate it if you didn’t butt into my life anymore as I’d like to pass on having to explain what user accounts or private mode are to people who aren’t inclined towards computers.

        • xirit64

          It’s the best option actually.

          • Roby

Yeah, in Opera perhaps. It’s not the only browser out there tho.
Feel free to take a look at the Firefox history options… They’re doing it better. So I asked them to add something similar here. Problem?

          • xirit64

No problem for me, Aneta has covered me already.

    • Leonardo Gomes

So your company might be changing owners soon huh?

      What are you talking about?

    • http://www.youtube.com/user/max1cp?feature=mhum Maxim

Yea, I have been reading about opera buyout for 5+ years now.

    • RafaellaG

You could open settings/privacy&security OR Menu/More tools and press “Clear browsing data…”
every time you leave the browser.

    • http://velmont.no/ Odin Hørthe Omdal (odinho/Velm

Maybe it would be good enough to change the Opera shortcut to start Opera like “opera –private”? Then it starts in private mode.

  • Alex Wazovskiy

So, will be support of NPAPI Flash Player in Opera 36? This is the only missing thing that prevents me from using Opera.

    • Leonardo Gomes

I don’t think so. Support for npapi tends to disappear with time.

      • Alex Wazovskiy

Then why Opera developers returned support for NPAPI plugins?

        • Leonardo Gomes

They did? Or maybe they just created some kind of workaround to bypass the lack of npapi support in Chromium?

          • Alex Wazovskiy

I don’t know. I just only want to know, should I wait for requested feature, or I can forget about it.

          • xirit64

            Forget NPAPI Flash.

          • Leonardo Gomes

Support for npapi plugins will probably be dropped by all major browsers sooner or later.

To be honest, i think that plugins will be gone in the future.

  • abaddon

Is there an option to have all speed dial boxes synched across devices instead having seperate one for each device? e.g. when new entry is added or deleted from one device it is also reflected on the speed dial of the other device. I don’t like current setup where every device has it’s own speed dial content, as it leads to having to maintaining it on all of the devices.

    • Aneta Reluga

This was evaluated some time ago and frankly, I don’t remember if there were any final conclusions. Personally, I can only say that this would be both a convenience for the users and a huge pain to maintain by the developers and the server guys (e.g. imagine you work on one machine, change something to speed dials while not connected, then do the same on the other device, and then go sync on both – and that’s one of the easier scenarios really).

      • abaddon

Thank you Aneta for a quick reply. My impression was that speed dial synch works in the same way as bookmarks. Is there at least a locally stored file I can copy from one device to another, so I don’t need to add and sort +30 entries manually?

        • Aneta Reluga

Long story short: yes, now speed dials work pretty much in the similar way as bookmarks, and yes, they are available in one file (called, surprise, “Bookmarks”). However, you would have to clean up your sync account before moving one local file to another, or at least be not logged in, or else your local and synced bookmarks on various machines would be ~combined.

      • Sidney Guioy

I wonder how that case is handled for bookmark ?
When i’ve reinstalled my computer, it created a new speedDial folder, had to copy all old thing to new folder.. ( and i also discoverd i had 5 speed dial folder with same computer name, reinstall * (opera beta + opera next ) + and old opera stable )

Maybe simply ask on first connection if you want to load from a folder or create a new one ?

i have to explain my sister that i needto do some manual stuff to recover her bookmark on her new computer, and why she can’t simply log in as before

I really think that it’s not a synchronisation problem, but more a ” we need to show user our new sponsored speed dial entry” i understand it’s how you guys make money and are able to provide opera for free, but i think we can find a just middle so everyone is satisfied 🙂

        • Aneta Reluga

It’s a bit more complicated and again, personally I would myself meet the merged speed dial with joy. Your feedback is being forwarded, that’s what I can say, but I cannot say when or if anything happens, unless of course it is on its way.

          • Sidney Guioy

            thanks ! 🙂

      • RafaellaG

That might work similarly as in the synchronization of Apple’s iPhones and their music playlists.

  • José Alberto

I think that the sync. status icon at upper side is important to see every time, because I can check the status at a simple views, so if it is not visible all the time maybe I think that the sync is OK but in fact is Off.

    • Tommy Wille

If there’s a problem, the sync icon will appear for you to take action or see status. So unless there’s a problem, it will stay hidden.

  • ammodytes

Is there any way to turn of this new smooth scrolling*

    • Leonardo Gomes

For now you can go to opera:flags and disable it.

      • ammodytes

        Thank you Leonardo! 🙂

  • Druszlak

Is it possible to sync extensions between computers? Maybe there is a file which stores extensions and can be copied to another machine?

    • Kornelia

There is no possibility to sync extensions for now but who knows.. 😉

    • Aneta Reluga

No syncing, but I think you should actually be able to copy the extensions stored in the local profile from one machine to another. I just never tried it, I must admit, so I’d have to try to be sure.

      • Druszlak

By “local profile” you mean installation folder (…Program files (x86)/Opera)?

        • Aneta Reluga

That’s the installation folder for Opera Stable. In general, you can check the profile path when you go to the Opera “About” page, listed under “Profile:”. If you have extensions installed, you should have two subfolders: >Extension StateExtensionsPreferences< file so that the destination machine can properly recognize the extensions.
I just tried this one with two separate standalone installations and it worked, so I think it should work with single-user or all-users installation too.

        • Leonardo Gomes

Nope, profile folder. See Menu > About Opera for the path.

However i think it’s not that easy to copy extensions.

          • Aneta Reluga

Right, it is not easy (you need to copy two folders and one preferences file, the latter means that *not only* extensions settings are being copied) but if someone really is focused on extensions only, it is doable. And the hash for extensions is also stored locally.

  • ammodytes

So far, i like cosmetic changes. But browsing expirience and page seems slower :/

    • ktxgio

i can confirm, new beta release seems very slow (windows 10)

      • Aneta Reluga

Can you please remind what your systems are, so we can try to evaluate the performance on our side? Thanks.

        • ammodytes

W10 x64 4GB ram, i will check on other, more stronger machine performance too

          • Kornelia

Hi Guys, we’re trying to track the problem. It’s already reported internally in our database. Could you please go to Preferences, enable advance setting (at the bottom of Browser section) and disable “Use hardware acceleration when available” option? Please let us know if that helped. Thanks.

          • ktxgio

I read your message now; this setting is enabled like in Opera 35 release (that work fine). performed tests: tried Opera 36 with and without hw acceleration and win 10 skin options vs Opera 35 (default options): win 10 skins seems not influencing performances, hw accelerations yes but Opera 36 remain generally more slow than Opera 35 (with hw acceleration enabled)

Have you changed how hw acceleration work?

          • Vux777

did you tried disabling smooth scrolling flag and see how Opera behaves?

          • ktxgio

Is “smooth scrolling” changed in Opera 36 beta respect to opera 35 stable?
Anyway problem is not scrolling: problem is loading page speed that is slow compared to Opera 35

          • Vux777

Is “smooth scrolling” changed in Opera 36 beta respect to opera 35 stable?

yes, smooth scrolling doesn’t exist in O35 stable

          • ktxgio

hi, i tried… don’t see any difference with or without smooth scrolling option.

i’m confused, during today tests i not see apreciable differences from Opera 35 and 36 (tested same sites of yesterday)

          • Aneta Reluga

Well… If the issue existed and now seems gone, it may mean that the sites are cached locally and that’s why working smoother. I can suggest that you clear cache and try again. Can you do this please?

          • ktxgio

every time that i performed a test, i clean cache and all temporary files of browsers (opera 35 and opera 36)

and i don’t understand why today seems to work fine and yesterday not

          • Aneta Reluga

Ah. Thanks. Although I’m happy the issue solved itself, I’m definitely worried that it happened in the first place, and this volatility makes it even harder to spot and fix :/

          • ktxgio

feb 02 updates: i’m confused, during today tests i not see apreciable differences from Opera 35 and 36 (tested same sites of yesterday)

        • ktxgio

i have a pc desktop with intel quad Q8300 (at 2.5 GHz), 4 GB of ram, more of 50 GB free space on hard disk and Windows 10 64 bit.
Opera 36 beta tested with usb installation on a pc folder (not on usb drive) and in the same mode i used Opera 35 stable that has no speed problem

is possible to return on old ui?

          • Aneta Reluga

Thanks. Just as Kornelia said, can you please disable the hardware acceleration and try if it helped? We need to rely on your help because the issue seems to happen only on selected machines. 🙁

    • pokemiu

Me too on windows 10 32b.

    • xirit64

Windows 10 -as any Microsoft OS before its first Service Pack 1- is full of problems, I’m surprised how easily and without any thorough research you people have jumped on that OS in the first place…

  • postdante

I don’t like the new rounded tabs under Windows 10, can’t stand it. It demolishes the whole modern look.

    • Raylan Givens

What? Did they make the tabs rounded even on windows 10? The clean UI is the reason I use opera… Can’t stand it either if that’s the case… Anyway to restore squared tabs?

    • xirit64

What does it look like? by the looks of the screenshots here I don’t see any rounded tabs.

      • Tommy Wille

It’s very minor. You see it at the very edges on the top.

        • xirit64

If that’s it then I find the whining over such a subtle trim really ridiculous, sorry to say that. I expected to see rounding of tabs like it’s on Firefox by the reaction I’ve read.

          • Tommy Wille

Yeah, it’s nowhere near Firefox. I have no problems with the current look.

          • postdante

It’s not ugly FF austrails but still it’s quite visible. They introduced new windows 10-like changes and made such a mistake. It’s not whining, it’s a matter of stating a simple fact – new tabs ARE rounded and some may not like it, including me.

    • Mikolaj Boc

      OneNote:

      https://www.dropbox.com/s/fwb8pq6ceaxxyeq/onenote.png?dl=0

seems to have corners that are a little rounded. They are a modern app – from Microsoft.

      • postdante

Yes, and there is also a dozen or so types of menus in Windows 10 now 🙂 Nothing is perfect

  • Ralf Brinkmann

    Hi!
    – After this big bad change in the developer version 36.x with the download manager page I was so happy, that you returned to the old way in the last developer 36.0.2129.0. And now in this Beta it’s the same shit again, that makes it impossible to navigate and interact by keyboard only. I MUST use the mouse! 🙁 Or is there any trick I don’t find?
    – Is it correct, that with “Start page WebUI components” enabled (standard) and/or “Navigation side panel” disabled there is no speed dial folder or icon on the start page?
    – Still problems with Facebook (and presumably Twitter).
    – I found out, that with the “old” skin the “rel Link Pager” for endless scrolling through pages by keyboard (https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/link-pager/cgddacggfmoggigikjjcogdodjiplibe) does not work properly. With the new, ugly Windows-10-skin it works, but I would prefer the old one.
    – Which setting in “PPAPI Win32k lockdown” is the standard?

    W10x64

    • http://velmont.no/ Odin Hørthe Omdal (odinho/Velm

      > – After this big bad change in the developer version 36.x with the download manager page I was so happy, that you returned to the old way in the last developer 36.0.2129.0. What? We did something good, then we regressed? I see it’s impossibru to tab around the downloads page. That’s not how it should be.

      > – Is it correct, that with “Start page WebUI components” enabled (standard) and/or “Navigation side panel” disabled there is no speed dial folder or icon on the start page?

You know that turning flags in other combinations than what we ship is unsupported, right? 🙂 There’s *so* many flags interacting on the start page right now it’s hard to really test everything every time we do a change. Though we would ofc like to keep things running. Not sure it’s worth backporting a fix though. Would users change the flag “navigation side panel” though? I’ve only heard good things about this change.

      • Ralf Brinkmann

Re-regression in the download manager in the new dev 37 still there. Not possible to tab around and delete all downloads by keyboard.

  • nick_el_son

    Like the UI.
But page loading is slower, especially fb.

    • ktxgio

      confirmed on windows 10

      • Kornelia

Could you please go to Preferences, enable advance setting (at the bottom of Browser section) and disable “Use hardware acceleration when available” option?

  • escruting

So, you removed the flag that enabled us to see the buttons that were too dark to see on windows10 dark themes. Instead, you combined this flag with the windows 10 skin.

What if we dont want to use the ugly windows 10 skin? Does this mean that the windows 10 skin will soon be enabled by default and without a flag to disable it?

If this is true, shame on you for continuing to not understand that customizable OPTIONS is what wins the game, not “cool” or “simple” “designs”.

  • oic

still can’t install smart rss extension to this version – able to do it in stable version but not beta or dev

    • Herr Pietrus

That’s really annoying, but we know what they will say and how it is with extensions – it’s their devs job to make them work… 🙁

      • Kornelia

Every change needs to go trough developer stream first. A little bit of patience 🙂

  • Robert

    1)hovering still present
    2)working browser not smooth
3)pages are loaded long and gradually

    • xirit64

I think something is wrong with your system in the first place… you keep writing about the same stuff that nobody is plagued with, how about you do a clean format?

      • Robert

        clean system windows 10 64x
if you are interested in PC Features here they are:
        Processor:Intel i7 4770k
        Memory:8 GB
        Graphics:GTX 760
        SSD 256Gb

        • xirit64

Well something sounds problematic to me I would check my RAM and SSD for problems/corruption.

    • Tommy Wille

Can you explain the first point?

      • Robert

When enter the site the browser hangs vk.com
hangs when watching movies when you launch and switch to HD

        • Tommy Wille

Ah, ok. Because you wrote hovering, which I thought was something to do with mouse hovering.

        • Ralf Brinkmann

Here no problems. Also W 10×64. But I don’t have an account there, so I can only open the login page.

  • 59er

Theme darkened quite a bit. When I have the theme change page open I can see a bright(normal) theme in the background. Once closed, not good. Using ‘Block Houses 2’ to test, but all are dark.
Note: No change when enabling flag ‘No Theme Overlay’
Also, stays dark when Speed Dial turned off.

    • RafaellaG

The darker theme appears only on SD page.
I still hope it will be fixed in O37.

    • xirit64

The theme on the SD has darkened intentionally so that the tiles can stand out more, so that the SD has more personality. I find it an excellent design choice.

      • RafaellaG

I think it has less personality. But that’s only my opinion^^

        • xirit64

Your opinion but you haven’t told us why, which is of importance here 🙂 .

          • 59er

I would prefer the theme to stand out and the tiles muted. Also, If the SD is off why have the theme darkened? I pick themes based on how they look when going through them.
Back to my example, Block Houses 2, in its intended form it is a bright mountain meadow. In its darkened form its just not the same. I can adjust my monitor settings to improve, but that will cause problems else ware.

          • RafaellaG

I said it already (on developer). My SD screen is very tidy. Only 6 tiles. I want to see my background theme. That’s the only reason i installed one (theme).
So the “darker” theme is very annoying.
I prefer a theme with its original brightness.
And on a brighter/normal theme I can see the tiles very clear too.

Btw. when you pave over your screen with 100 or more tiles, then it matters not if there is a brighter or darker theme background or any at all^^

And why should I use a theme, if I can’t see it or if it’s ugly?

opera://flags/#no-theme-overlay has no apparent effect on SD

          • xirit64

What you like your browser to look like is subjective, the Speed Dial’s tiles is the flagship of Opera and not its wallpapers, so the design is clearly dictated by them. By using an objective term called “Contrast” they serve their flagship’s needs, (contrast is used to make things distinguish from each other -which is objective- and means: more personality, and not less as you say).

          • RafaellaG

So that’s why Opera highlights also the themes configuration (as you can see above).

SD isn’t only the flagship because of its tiles, but also because of its themes.
And a SD with an ugly background means an ugly SD!

Ask anyone if it disturbs him/her if the theme is displayed in its original brightness.

          • xirit64

Definitely not. You can get better themes with Google Chrome and be done with it, native SD with configurable tiles is what makes Opera unique from all the other browsers. And there is where the weight falls.

          • RafaellaG

Ok. Then bring back a uni colour background for SD. All is better your favorite theme that is castrated.

And don’t say I can use a uni colour theme myself.

As long as there is a possibility to use a theme I use MY theme and ask that it is displayed in its original brightness.

            So, finis.

          • http://velmont.no/ Odin Hørthe Omdal (odinho/Velm

#no-theme-overlay only works when you use the new “Use Overlay = false” in persona.ini in the theme.

So the themes need to be written for it to work. But we wanted to give you guys ability to /not/ have the overlay on. So themes got a bit more flexible now. When you do “Use Overlay = false” the textColor is also respected 🙂

            Enjoy! (Barring any bugs)

          • RafaellaG

Changed the persona.ini …works fine now

            THANK YOU! 🙂

          • 59er

How did you do that? Cheers!

          • RafaellaG

Extract the persona.ini from the .zip file in ..RoamingOpera SoftwareOpera NextThemes of the theme you want to show with full brightness. Open it in edit mode. Add the “Use Overlay = false” and save it again in the .zip. Don’t forget to enable the overlay flag.

A How to to the Persona.ini details (version 2) you can find here: https://dev.opera.com/articles/themes-in-opera-18-and-higher/

The “Use Overlay = false” isn’t shown here. But insert it in the [Start Page] section.

PS. Maybe you have to make some adjustments for version 1 themes.

          • 59er

Thank you. So far, it is not working for the theme I would like to change (Block Houses 2). When trying to save the Persona.ini I get a message that says, basically, you can’t do that. Will experiment a bit.

          • RafaellaG

            maybe your .zip is protected.
create a new one with at least the persona.ini and the background picture in it.
Or you don’t have the administrator rights.
Then you can maybe create a new one in Opera “create your theme” and edit the persona.ini from your created .zip

          • 59er

Success! Thank you. The process I used was to ‘Save As’ (Example Persona.ini 2) with ‘Use Overlay=False’ added. Delete the original persona. ini. Paste the new version, then ‘Save As’ back to persona.ini. Then delete the original change file (persona.ini 2) Kind of a pain and really should not be necessary, but like you I only have a few tiles and like to see my background. Cheers!

    god, why?((((
opera now is so dark on win10. please make permanent checkbox for flag “Windows 10 skin”
i love old good non-win10 skin.

    • Vux777

      there is a new flag
      opera://flags/#no-theme-overlay

      currently I can’t test it (I’m on win7)
did you try enabling that flag? does it help?

      • Lordbl4

i just use opera://flags/#windows-10-skin – “disable” and now i see old good skin. want permanent checkbox for this option in browser settings

  • Vux777

I can’t watch vimeo video no matter what I do
    https://vimeo.com/154567782

    fresh win7 install
    run all plugin content checked
    flash installed (trough opera downloaded)
    …canary plays it without problems

    • RafaellaG

      JavaScript enabled?

      • Vux777

        yep

    • Leonardo Gomes

Video plays fine here on Win10 64 bits.

Btw, it seems to use html5.

      • Vux777

        on win10 plays fine

        • Leonardo Gomes

          32 or 64? And what about Win7?

          • Vux777

            64
            win7 nope

          • Leonardo Gomes

            So Win7 is 32 bits?

I may be mistaken but i think there were several reports regarding video playback issues having in commom the use of 32 bits versions of Windows.

    • Ralf Brinkmann

      Like Leonardo no problems. W10x64

    • xirit64

      No problems here either, W7x64.

      • Vux777

why am I with weird problems :/

        • xirit64

          😀
is it playing on the dev version? (where it came from – plays fine here too)

          • Vux777

it doesn’t play on any of the versions I tried

          • Aneta Reluga

Do you get the html5 version or the Flash version when you check with the right click? My Win7x74 plays fine (a very nice video by the way, thanks 🙂 )
One more thing – can you please check the internal command opera:browserjs ? Mine is active.

          • Vux777

I was just temperately on win7… to test some things
            it’s “by gone” now 🙂

Works for me. Not sure if it’s the site or my connection but the page loads rather slow.. Oh and I have Flash Player 20 NPAPI installed which Opera refuses to detect. Maybe that’s the reason why it works for me..? https://i.imgur.com/5sSjasR.jpg

  • escruting

Could we have the speed dials vertically aligned?

    • Joe438

      What do you mean?

      • escruting

Centered. The speed dials are placed on a fixed “starting position” with a fixed top margin that is too low.

The margin should be bigger and adapt as you add more speed dials.

        • RafaellaG

Please don’t do this. I like the “free” space under the tiles.
If you have not many tiles they would look “lost” there in the middle of the screen.

          • escruting

I know, maybe not centered completely but not as it is right now. With the search box disabled they’re positioned too close to the bookmarks bar. On another version it was even more close, they tweaked it a bit to have more margin, but i think it needs even more.

          • RafaellaG

You will (probably) get used to it.

And a development version before the last they were even closer to the top.

  • Gloriam

Great update, I was a bit worried when the first developer build came out, but you’ve listened and improved the new stuff, thank you opera team. 🙂

  • Joe438

I really like this release. O35 was a nice release, but it is going to be really hard to wait for O36. Speed Dial has long been my favorite page, but now it looks like it is becoming a bit more of a control center.

My favorite aspect has to be the way space is more efficiently used from the removal of the white framed background of the speed dials to moving the navigation panel to the left. I also like the way the empty space above the speed dials is no longer reserved for the Search Box even when the Search Box is not there.

A close second for me, which is first for most people, is the Speed Dial control panel.

Centering the titles of the Speed Dials is a nice touch too. I had forgotten how much I wanted those centered.

I hope you don’t mind, but I want to add one tiny item from my Opera wish list, which is to be able to turn off the “x” on the tabs. For some of us this is not really necessary since a middle click will close the tab just fine and that way I can avoid accidentally clicking on the “x” if I need to quickly navigate back and forth between tabs.

P.S. I like how I accidentally closed Opera and restarted it and my text was still there 🙂

    • Aneta Reluga

Thanks a lot for your opinion – it was not only nice, but well-founded too 🙂

Regarding your idea of turning off “x” – I feel you so much because I cannot really count how many times I’ve accidentally closed a tab myself instead of just going to that tab. I’d just like to ask you how would you solve the middle-click counterpart (for closing tabs) on touch screens? We were thinking here about the double-tap action for tab closing. Do you think it would be acceptable? Or, maybe you have a better idea? Please share.

      • Joe438

I had not really considered the Opera touch screen counterpart. For the most part I had considered them separate, especially in regard to design. The double tap to close tabs sound like a great idea for touch screen devices 🙂

I’m eager to see what new direction Opera 37 goes in.

        • Aneta Reluga

          Thanks. 🙂

  • qwerzaq

smooth scrolling at chrome very smoothly goes, and for the opera smooth scrolling doesn’t work in general the flag is included or not correct please

smooth scrolling у хрома очень гладко идет, а у оперы smooth scrolling не работает вообще включён флаг или нет исправьте пожалуйста

    • Kornelia

Could you go to Preferences, enable advance setting (at the bottom of Browser section) and disable “Use hardware acceleration when available” option?

      • qwerzaq

no, didn’t help I switched off and I included Use hardware acceleration when available doesn’t help wasps of windows 7 x64 opera beta and developer both don’t work.
I have one desire, make that extension could be moved here and there

  • iPristy

Thanks that’s better, i can now retire bookmarks bar, disabling Google search box on speed dial did it. Can’t wait for final, testing…

    • Kornelia

It’s business as usual here, still the same people working on the same products 🙂

      • muratservan

So its true. Time to consider moving to Vivaldi.
Btw they won’t be same products anymore.

        • RafaellaG

          bye bye

      • xirit64

I really want to believe that you are not going to undergo another restructuring but I think you will 🙁

        • Aneta Reluga

          Think Volvo.
Also, I’d take it easy – from my point of view, it’s really business as usual. Releases are scheduled, plans are followed. Life.

          • Kai Ockendorf

So if nothing really changes for us users…then all is good! Still looking forward to new builds, design polishing & more awesome features 🙂 Opera will be my main browser…no matter what!!!

          • Christian Büte

If Opera will be the Volvo of web browsers, then we don’t have any reason to fear from some evil plans. When people think about Volvo, it means something, it means quality, right?

I hope that this deal will make the same thing with Opera.

      • Marko Koivuniemi

So we thought earlier: same people and same good old browser then made in Norway.

        • Leonardo Gomes

And also Sweden, Poland, France and some other places around the world. 🙂

    • Marko Koivuniemi

      Sad news.

      • RafaellaG

What does it matter who owns the company?
It is probably more important how the products (the browsers) evolve in the future.

And that is to be seen.

        • jedy123

Exactly. Also you’d think a company who’ve just bid $1.2 billion are going to be serious about making Opera a success.

          • jedy123

Has anyone thought this could be good news?

          • netwolf

Haha, a closed source internet browsing software in chinese hands, how could anybody not scream for joy?

          • jedy123

Why is this automatically seen as doom and gloom? Could there not be the chance that this will be a great thing for Opera? Not advocating it definitely will be good but there’s too much negativity already before the deal has been done.

          • Mingrui Chen

Even Chinese think it’s bad news. (I’m Chinese.) You don’t know what kind of company Qihoo is. They may “help you” install all the products of Qihoo automatically. In China we call it “rascal software”. That’s why we likes Firefox or Opera though Qihoo’s browser has some customised features for Chinese.

          • Leonardo Gomes

In a certain way, but i guess only time will tell.

          • xirit64

You don’t know that, there can be many reasons behind any acquisition. Qihoo 360 has already a browser called liked that, who knows if Opera will be renamed to Qihoo in the future and targeted primarily at the chinese audience? Or they need primarily the mobile “business” of Opera and not the browser itself? It will be a 100% acquisition, theoretically Opera as a name could not exist the day after.

          • Leonardo Gomes

I see it more as an investment, an easier way for the chinese companies to reach western users.

        • xirit64

Ehm have you thought that those two are actually interrelated?

    • Druszlak

When I thnk about scandinavian engineering with chinese assets…
      http://bi.gazeta.pl/im/e0/46/fc/z16533216Q,Volvo-XC90.jpg

      Not bad, don’t you think?

If only Opera could keep security and privacy at high level.

      • Aneta Reluga

You are right there about Volvo, yes; and as of the privacy and security, the Opera privacy policy http://www.opera.com/privacy is of course valid and there are no plans to change it.
Anyway, I think it would be much better if we could just get back to the technical issues. 🙂 I know I’m repeating myself, but it is really business as usual, and I’m here to help the users, gather feedback and respond to issue reports. For me, completely nothing changed. 🙂

        • Nekomajin43

Then give us some fresh O37 build! 🙂

          • Aneta Reluga

            Stay tuned 😛

          • Nekomajin43

            I am!

I’ve noticed, even though I have Plug-ins set to “Click to Play” in the Settings, they are automatically running without clicking.

    • Leonardo Gomes

      Seems to be a bug.

    • Aneta Reluga

All of them? Please check your “Exceptions” section and if it’s empty or does not match the pages, then it is definitely a bug.

      • albert71292

All of them, including the ones I haven’t added to Exceptions. Works properly in the Stable, just not functioning in the Beta.

        • Aneta Reluga

Thanks. I also rechecked; now reported internally as DNA-49421.

  • Stanislav Stratil

Hello, Im not sure, if its ok to post it here, but did you devs checked my suggestion on the forum? I didnt get any reply, so im worrying that maybe you even didnt noticed…

        • Stanislav Stratil

      Awesome idea!!!

    • Herr Pietrus

I like it! Really interesting 🙂

  • http://genius-lab.org/ Serghei Bulah

Can’t wait this to be pushed to Opera Stable. Let everyone see how Opera looks and feels now. Congrats!

  • proxxy

This beta is by far most buggy beta of all time. Lags and freezes often, hope that stable will be more.. stable 😀
    Windows 10 x64.

    • Aneta Reluga

Thanks. There is this saying: “If one person tells you you’re a horse, they are crazy. If three people tell you you’re a horse, there’s conspiracy afoot. But if ten people tell you you’re a horse, you’d better buy a saddle”. We are investigating it thoroughly because it happens on far too many Win10 machines. I can only express my hope it will be fixed soon.

      • Vux777

I think smooth scrolling is part of the problem
since I disable it, I didn’t get any freezing or crash (that doesn’t mean I wont, I disable it yesterday)
and the whole browser is more responsive

        • Aneta Reluga

There actually are some issues with smooth scrolling already; we have to find out if it is also the culprit in the cases of “crashfreezes”. Thanks a lot!

  • christian

Is there a way to make fonts like ‘Source Sans Pro’ look not so blurry?

    • Aneta Reluga

Are you using Google Docs on HiDPI? Or is it some other web fonts place?

      • christian

The main problem is that it depends on wether ClearType is on or off, so it’s rather a Windows than an Opera issue. I tried to find a way to get certain fonts without ClearType less blurry but it seems to be impossible. 😉

  • Ralf Brinkmann

Problem with reading a PDF file with the built in PDF viewer within the browser. I can scroll till page 16 of 22, then it stops. For those of you, who want to try it out: http://www.mensch-westend.de/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/20160211-Mensch-Westend-Februar-2.pdf.
My system: Windows 10×64 with 32 GB Ram.

I can not confirm this issue.

      • Ralf Brinkmann

Did you use the built in Chrome PDF viewer? I have tried again. Even if I press END at once, it jumps only to page 16 and then stops. I can not do anything else on the page (scroll up or down) and have to close it.

        • http://www.blackcoder.de blackcoder

Yes, I use the Chrome PDF Viewer. Adobe Reader is deactivated.

          Already tried clearing the cache?

          • Ralf Brinkmann

Just tried out. And I tried out to download and read the magazin then. And now I think that the Chrome viewer simply showd me wrong page numbers, so that I thought there must be more. Thank you for testing.

Also dies on O35 stable; takes out entire browser (not just tab). Unrelated to this build but should be tracked/fixed regardless.

    • Ralf Brinkmann

The mistake is still there in the new Dev 37, but now an error message apperas: The PlugIn “Unknown” slows down your computer. You can stop it now or wait…

  • Jademarisa

Still no classic menu and no real customisation. BTW when the firm is bought by the Chinese bidders are you going to continue as a Chrome clone or become a Maxthon clone? So disappointed with the news. The day Opera is bought by the Chinese the day I am uninstalling Opera. For the same reason I haven’t installed Maxthon, I don’t want my data going to the Chinese government or Chinese mafia. Please don’t (At least NSA are our SOB)

  • Gloriam

Something I noticed after using the new start screen a bit more, I kinda liked it better when I was able to adjust the speed dials size without effecting things like news or history (especially news), could we have an option to adjust the size of the speed dial tiles, that would solve it. 🙂

There also seems to be an issue with youtube (and maybe more sites) that the website freezes for a bit, I’ve tested this on two laptops one with old hardware and another with fairly recent i7, and my gaming PC, like when you start typing on the search bar, only lasts for a couple of seconds, but it’s a bit annoying, certainly wasn’t there before. 😛

  • Vux777

tab freezes after couple of seconds (scrolling) on this site and any of the subpages
    stable doesn’t
in beta, smooth scrolling is disabled
    and both have disabled HWA

    • Aneta Reluga

Thanks. Tracked as DNA-49372. (It’s a general info, referring to your report as well as blackcoder’s, Ralf Brinkmann’s and many others’)

Pictures are not loaded on reddit, happens on beta only.

    • Ralf Brinkmann

I have tried https://www.reddit.com/ and I can load the pictures on the left border. Is it this you mean?
      W10x64.

      • SLR

I don’t see any pictures at all. Clicking the links opens them normally on imgur. Other websites seem to be working normally. Win10x64, extensions disabled, flags reset. I can also see the image if I right click > open image in a new tab.

        • Ralf Brinkmann

I can click on the image or on the link and the big image is opened. What you can try out: Close Opera, rename the profile folder (see: Opera:about) and restart Opera. A new, virgin profile folder will be crated and you can try your luck again. If it works now, you know that something is wrong in your profile.

          • SLR

            Yep, works now. Thanks!

  • Kaardilugeja

    Hi, couple suggestions.

    1. When scrolling down to News section in Speed Dial change the tab title to News instead of Speed Dial.
    2. Add time stamp on news tiles in News. (Opt in maybe?)

  • Henry Barton

I hate the Windows 10 interface so please don’t roll out the new Windows 10 look to the stable release. Opera’s standard look is a nice break from Windows 10’s interface. Also, the news feature is not good when young children are surfing with you.

    • Henry Barton

Other than that, I want to say I love Opera. You’ve done an amazing job, from what I’ve seen, on HTML5 support, plus it sips memory. It’s a very efficient browser. I completely gave up on IE and now use Opera exclusively, even on my tablet.
