Exactly a week passed from our previous developer snapshot, and here we go again, with yet another release. We have changed quite a bit, including suggestions from our dedicated users – many thanks, you are most reliable!

For today’s release, we have the following highlights:

Users’ suggestions

Yes. A separate section only for the users’ suggestions being implemented. Go and see for yourself:

  • Behold – you can now have a completely clean start-page. However, to fully utilize this feature, you have to go to Settings -> Browser, scroll down and enable “Show advanced settings”. Then, open the start-page, click “Customize Start Page” and enjoy the ability to turn off everything:Start-page customization

Note that without the “Show advanced settings” checkbox enabled, you can only turn off themes and news.

  • We have also removed the white underlay from the news page so that the background is either generally clean and themed. Do you like it now?
  • The bookmarks bar folder icon has been updated to conform with the Opera visual integrity. Thanks for your input!

News configuration

As you can see on the screenshot attached above, now you can configure news from the start-page configuration panel right away – we have fixed the nuisance from the previous release :)

Themes configuration

The updated Themes carousel now appears in both the Settings->Browser panel and the “Show Advanced Settings” start-page configuration panel. You can select from both the installed themes and the Opera online themes:

Themes: Settings

Themes: SD settings

Of course, the previous method of Opera theming is also still available.

Other features

The ones below are currently hidden under flags, so please check them out when you feel explorative:

  • If you have some substantial history, you can try out the flag #personalized-news-start-page, and see how it works for you after you click through the configuration steps:Personalized News
  • If you have a slow connection (around 1Mb/s or less), news can be auto-supported by the Turbo2 mode without having to explicitly turn on Opera Turbo. To enable that, please switch the #turbo-for-news-on-startpage flag.
  • To test our current state of flawless switching between internal pages, please enable the #start-page-web-ui-components flag.

Important note for Linux users

For technical reasons, we are unable to deliver the updated Linux build today. No need to worry though – another developer update is expected soon. Your patience will be rewarded.

——

We have also updated the Chromium version to 49.0.2612.0.

Known issues

DNA-48596 On Mac, Opera freezes when going to the fullscreen mode with more than one extension in the expander menu
DNA-48602 More history content is not loaded when generating history and going back to the History tab

  • nanana1

Thanks, Aneta, for this Opera Developer build 36.0.2114.0 which includes feedback from some of our users !

  • Nekomajin43

Will we be able to use News as a separate page?

    • BK

If what we are developing now gets released as it is, rather not.

      • Nekomajin43

How will that feature allow me to keep my start page clean and read my RSS feeds? Is it going to be an RSS reader at all?

        • BK

Yes, if nothing changes, future iterations should deliver possibility for you to manually modify News RSS sources list.

Note that this is not a delivery promise.

          • Nekomajin43

So there will be no option to use it on a separate page. Useless.

          • plague

So, _if_ it will support manually added RSS sources in the future, I will have a Speed Dial littered with various text-only RSS feeds, mixed with the built in News sources, that I _cannot_ choose to display on a separate page instead!? Yeah, that seems like a _great_ idea… Come on.

If you don’t care, just say so.
For now, News is a dead feature for me. It’s been turned off and I have absolutely no plans of turning it on ever again unless it can be displayed on a separate page again.
            Simple as that.

      • Roby

So if I want to read my news occasionally I’ll have to have them load each and every time I open my browser?
It seems “News” will turn into a feature I’ll never use again. Bummer.

        • BK

I suppose you use more than one stream (dev/beta/final) of Opera.. Maybe you can have News turned on/off by default in various streams?

          • Nekomajin43

Maybe he can install a standalone feed reader… Come on…

          • Herr Pietrus

            Is it a joke?

What’s more, as I’ve said earlier, rearranged news page doesn’t allow me to read the news only form one category and then immediately switch to another one!
I’d have to open configuration menu, untick previously browsed category, tick the new one and close the menu if I’d like to!
Four clicks comparing to one or two in old/current stable build!

          • plague

That’s a rather crappy response honestly.
Your “solution” is to have multiple Opera browsers installed just for that _one_ feature?

But yeah, I guess this means I will never use News again either..

  • Vux777

switching between webUI components is much better now
history sometimes breaches out without css for a moment (during transition animation)
and you could expand that background from bookmarks, history …side bar under webUI menu

    Opera freedom?!

    • Vux777

and double click on history makes this
      http://prntscr.com/9sy38q

      • Kev87

        I can confirm this on w10 x64

      • Kornelia

History issue is probably the one already reported internally: DNA-48643

  • Ralf Brinkmann

Oh, the new Windows look is switched on by default now. I had to switch it off. I want the old look. And my Sync button back. I want to see if I’m not connected. I also found the setting for this.
The new “Customize Start Page with enjoying the ability to turn off everything” sounds really promising. Where is the little box to switch off the big PLUS symbol? Or is it hidden in the flags?

And: The download of an *.exe file still creates a subfolder “exe” and hides the downloaded file there. #@$/%!! I have never seen this announced as a new feature and I don’t want it.

    • Wando Schneider

“I want to see if I’m not connected.” – If there’s an issue, the icon will be displayed.

      • Ralf Brinkmann

Ok, but I have enough space. I have the button switchend on again. It’s good that I have a choice.

      • Nekomajin43

All the tinkering, instead of allowing us to show/hide buttons on the toolbar…

        • Herr Pietrus

Definitely they like to complicate some fucking simple things…
But we should get used to…

    • Aneta Reluga

From the bottom: the .exe subfolder is a part of a certain feature in progress, and this feature cannot be disclosed as of yet. Sorry for the inconvenience.

As for the plus symbol being switched off: the start-page cleanup is done by bigger chunks and I’m not sure if there are plans to atomize it further, but once I know, you can be sure I’m going to announce it.

And, as for the Windows look and Sync button: yes, the changes you mention are reflected in the changelog.

      • Matheus Bombonato

Please, an option to remove the plus button would be great. Even a hidden flag.

      • Herr Pietrus

Can you tell us how the download folder structure will look after the introduction of that mysterious feature? I assume that nothing will change because that folder, as well as many others for different extensions, is necessary, am I right?

    • Herr Pietrus

No, please, no, it’s enough to have to look on that ugly Windows 10 (if someone uses that auto-updating, spying crap). And now Opera is going to force using that new “great” modern skin…

  • Sierra

I like Show system color on top bar but I don’t need that spacing between icons and extension buttons. For me, win 10 skin will be disabled.

  • tarkus

Out of the box: Seems that the audio distortion issue has been resolved!!!
As for the looks: You really have a tremendous head start. Somebody has to be really biased not to admit that O is comfortably in front of the competition in that department!

    • Aneta Reluga

      o/

    • NoName

I actually had a colleague who changed to Opera when he saw my UI (pretty basic Opera).
      No persuasion from my side.

    • Mikolaj Boc

      Thanks a lot!

  • Kev87

Nice update. With the flag enabled, the white blinking is finally resolved! I really like the effect you’ve added to it. Now the Menu button is also at the right spot with the windows 10 theme and it looks so much better. Looking forward to see what’s next :)

    • beBoss

      What flag, what blinking?

      • Kev87

In the previous developer version and in all other versions of opera in general when you switch from speed dial to bookmarks, to history, etc (internal pages) then there was a white blinking when you switched the pages see my video (https://www.dropbox.com/s/2bgt1e5v44htwz4/2016-01-14-0030-53.mp4?dl=0) . Now when you enable the flag #start-page-web-ui-components the switch is more smooth and there is no blinking anymore. So nice fix!

  • Kev87

Also are there any plans to reduce the cpu usage when watching html5 videos in the future? For example if I want to watch a video like this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Kptu9qxj1w )and i switch the quality to 4k, I can watch it without problems in MS edge, because it uses less cpu while playing the video. In Opera my cpu is almost at 100% and it doesn’t play smooth at all. It’s the same in Chrome, so I think that it has something to do with the engine, but if it can be done in edge why not in Opera? I do have to mention that on my i7 desktop I don’t have this problem. But on my new laptop (although it has an i5 processor) it occurs, but it plays fine in edge, so it’s not a hardware problem or something. You’ve reduced the ram usage of Opera in the past, so why not the cpu usage now :)

    • NoName

It could be that the video is rendered using your GPU instead of CPU in Edge, and not yet in Chromium browsers.

      • Kev87

I am not an expert in this at all, but it’s sad that it isn’t like that in Opera and chromium in general. Or is there a workaround or something?

        • NoName

On Linux you are using ffmpeg for some videos, so there might be a chance there. But other than that, you just have to wait for it to happen…
It’s quite odd that it has such low priority in Chromium, when Google owns Youtube.

Also, props to the IE team. They have really stepped up.

  • Dave-H

Still immediately crashing when I switch sync on. :-(
    Now reported as bug DNA-48629.

    • Aneta Reluga

Thanks! I’m unable to repro on Win7 but I’ll push it further to see on XP.

      • Dave-H

        Thanks!

  • led9ru

Image, used in theme of Startpage, It is seen that = as if through a dirty gray glass!
how to turn off this shade?

    • Der Herr Nick

Yeah, a switch would be great. The grey shade could become an eye-friendly night modus.

  • Kev87

When you open the speed dail. Then click on history via the Opera menu. When the history page opens, the buttons for the internal pages on the sidebar don’t work. (win 10 x64)

    • Kornelia

Thanks, it’s already reported internally as DNA-48643

  • Wouter Mense

Can we have the ability to remove news providers that have a paywall?

    • BK

Hi. We are working on 2 fronts:
      – update of the existing feeds
      – for power users – delivering the possibility to have more control over News

      stay tuned.

  • beBoss

After update, icon in Startmenu on Windows 10 x64 b11099 is blank.

  • Вадік Дудар

when opera will have data savings info? (like in opera mobile)

    • Aneta Reluga

The data savings info makes sense on mobiles where the usage of data transfer/data plans via mobile operators is common. Are you using desktop Opera on a tablet or 2in1 with a mobile modem and have the need for the feature?

      • muratservan

But page size info would be very good under world icon in the address bar.

        • Aneta Reluga

That’s a separate thing, but thanks for your opinion.

      • Вадік Дудар

Yandex browser do that. Why opera can`t do this?

  • http://seoblogger-google.blogspot.com Syahran Syah

Thank you very much for sharing..

  • Robert

1)All also hangs when switch the movie to HD.
2)All also hangs on website vk.com
3)Flickers when switching between Speed Dial, tabs, news, bookmarks, history.

    • Kev87

For 3) try to enable the #start-page-web-ui-components flag

  • Konstantin Paramonov

Video elements have top priority in Firefox, so Youtube videos play instantly without waiting for thumbnails. Can you do that in Opera?

  • Kai Ockendorf

The flawless switching between internal pages with the flag enabled is super awesome!! Love it :)

What I don’t really like is the color of the Google search field. I know I can switch it off & I played around with both options…on Speed Dial and/or near the address bar! Without it on Speed Dial the the distance to the address field is too low!! I would like to have it on SD either more grey/black or transparent…also the SD folders! Fit more to the great Windows 10 theme :) about the W10 theme: I guess it’s about time to make the settings menue black/dark grey, like real W10!

Last but not least: Thanks a ton for your hard work, the build release speed & the great ideas to suprise us :)

    • BK

Thanks for your comments. Distance topic is already on the agenda, should be fixed soon.

I will leave Mikolaj possibility to comment on Win 10 theme.

      • Kai Ockendorf

        Thank you!

    • Mikolaj Boc

Hi! Thanks for sparing some time to share your opinion about those. Could you please justify your choice of menu colors? Seems like Windows10 is quite mixed in that regard, having different menu colors everywhere.

      • Kai Ockendorf

Hi! Thanks for your reply. I mean the dark grey/black menue design when you right click on the windows start button. OK, maybe it’s only me, but I’m a hugh fan of that color design 😉

        • hicksdesign

Hi Kai! The dark Start Menu isn’t really used anywhere else in Win10 though, its not a conventional style for app menus 😉

          • Kai Ockendorf

Thanks Jon & Hi back! Yeah, I guess so, but it was worth a try 😉 looking forward to more awesome design changes! Opera is on a good way :)

          • plague

The Start Menu is a Metro app in Win10. So that context menu is a Metro thing.
I personally would not want Opera’s context menus be styled like that, _unless_ it was a semi-transparent black menu. _That_ would be nice.

  • xirit64

#start-page-web-ui-components on and clicking on History crashes the page, but I’d assume you already know that as it’s WIP :) W7x64

    • Kornelia

      Already reported internally DNA-48643

  • escruting

Please, make the Win10 theme an option in the settings. Be considerate with us, don’t stick this mess to us. I’ll stop using Opera if you make it default and without option or flag.

    • _artem_

      opera://flags/#windows-10-skin

      disable that crap bro

to opera team… when you hover #flag_name it shows correct path: opera://flags…….. but when you copy it.. you get:

      chrome://flags/#windows-10-skin

also chrome:// internal pages are in this flag..

      Enable Material Design extensions

      Mac, Windows, Linux

If enabled, the chrome://extensions/ URL loads the Material Design extensions page.

      • escruting

Uh, yes, i know about those options. But thats not what i’m talking about. If you’ve used Opera since they switched to blink you’ll know that flags don’t stay flags forever. And that they dont always become selectable options in the settings.

        • Mikolaj Boc

Okay, so you don’t like the theme itself or the size of the elements?

          • Ralf Brinkmann

For me: The size. And the distance between the elements. Ok, and the colour. So everything. :)

          • escruting

The size is too big, but i dont like the theme itself. Just because i use Win10 doesnt mean i like the visual styles that the metro apps or edge use. I dont use the metro apps nor edge, so the visual style opera is trying to implement by default is not something for me and for a lot of people. If you really want to make this win10 skin, atleast make it so we can disable it and go back to the classic and neutral win7 style.

          • plague

The theme icons match the Win10 Edge icons, but they do not match the same icons (arrows) in Explorer (not Internet Explorer, the regular File Explorer).
Personally, I agree with you, I don’t use Edge, I don’t have a Microsoft account attached to my Windows copy and I don’t use Metro apps if I can avoid it.

I’m not looking for a Win7 or Win8 desktop look, I like smooth, clean graphics, but I simply don’t think those thin line gigantic arrows look good on a gray background with lots of whitespace padding.

If the background was semi-transparent black, then yeah, thin white line arrows would have looked good, but not gigantic like that. The Explorer.exe arrows look better.

However, the padding is the main issue.
It’s unneeded, wasted space on a desktop computer.
Make it go away. Give us an option to turn it off.

          • Herr Pietrus

For me – the size and that thin ugly icons.
I hate Windows 10 design. And I hate Edge skin. If you force Windows 10 users to use only that theme and I switch to Windows 10, I’ll find another browser or I’ll stick to the last non-modern version as long as I can.

  • Druszlak

Finally, after all this time I have to admit that you’re really close guys:
    Opera 36 + smooth scrooling + more customizable interface > Opera 12

Keep up the good work! 😉

    • http://www.youtube.com/user/max1cp?feature=mhum Maxim

If we are being honest new Opera has been better than 12 for a very long time. Probably starting around v25. There will always be features that are missing based on different opinions.

For me the browser is almost perfect. However, I would really like to see the auto color pick up based on website color scheme like in vivaldi and auto tab stacking based on the domain name. These might not be so important for everyone, but for me they are.

      • Herr Pietrus

        You mean card colour?!
        OMG, it looks disgusting!

        • http://www.youtube.com/user/max1cp?feature=mhum Maxim

          Wat.

    • Olli

It really seems that the surfacing of Vivaldi helped them to get back on track. Competition is a good thing and now they really seem to try to keep their user base for the first time in many years. This, of course, is no good news for Vivaldi.

      • Leonardo Gomes

I really don’t see Vivaldi “bothering” any browser atm.

        • Olli

Of course they bother Opera. Especially power users might switch. Opera is making preemptive steps to prevent this. Other browser are neither bothered by Vivaldi nor by Opera because they serve undemanding users which do not need extended features besides browsing and using some addons.

          • Leonardo Gomes

Even if it was trhe case, how much of the users those “power users” represent? 1%? Let’s say 5%?

I still don’t think it bothers Opera or any browser that much.

    • Herr Pietrus

Opera 36 – Modern skin + RSS Reader like Smart RSS extension + separate search field with results opened in new card + a few things I don’t remember about now + smooth scrolling + more customizable interface = Opera 12

      :)

      • Druszlak

        … + old, inefficient and time-consuming in development engine = Opera 12 😉

  • _artem_

windows 10 theme looks ugly… on prev build i activated that flag.. and was shocked of how ugly it looks like on win10… thought it’s not ready yet.. and disabled flag again.. but now it’s on by default and it still looks ugly crap… huge buttons.. huge gaps between bookmark bar icons.. folders i used to their positions.. are now on another positions.

    • beBoss

It’s perfect I like it a lot, the best theme ever!

    • Rick

I’m with you on this, I don’t like the new look either. :(

    • Mikolaj Boc

All right, so is it the spacing a problem or the overall look & feel? Spacing can be fixed by a setting (touch mode on/off), theme switching would be more unwieldy.

      • http://pavelkouril.cz/ Pavel Kouřil

How do you turn off the touch mode? I can’t find it in settings. :(

        • Mikolaj Boc

We will have to first create that, that’s why I’m asking what is it we should really fix. :)

          • http://pavelkouril.cz/ Pavel Kouřil

Oh. Well, yeah, the current “theme” is too big.

What is IMHO the worst that it’s basically inconsistent with other maximized apps; the “header” (I can’t recall exact technical term) of maximized window frame for every other application I have is the same – be it Speed Commander, PhpStorm, whatever. But when I alt tab, it feels weird now, because Opera has few pixels more in height.

I would honestly prefer just an option to keep the older look. It honestly looked more compact and effective.

          • Mikolaj Boc

Well, I can’t agree with the caption bar height complaint:

            https://www.dropbox.com/s/cqsupxr4oavvtn8/stuff.png?dl=0

It’s basically the same as it was in O beta, and the same as in desktop apps.

We will make it possible to remove the paddings added for convenient touch input.

          • http://pavelkouril.cz/ Pavel Kouřil

I think you are comparing non-maximized windows. Maximized window comparison looks like this: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/18384599/screens/20160122131307_opera.png

Either that, or our Windows systems are behaving totally different. :(

          • plague

+1 to having an option to remove the extra padding.
I’m guessing you’re talking about the padding on the toolbar/urlbar/omnibar/whatsitcalled?

I’m not super fond of the new Win10 theme either, but it’s fine if I can at least get the toolbar back to the same size as before.
The extra whitespace padding is unneeded on a desktop computer.

          • Herr Pietrus

So you admit that this ugly modern theme will be only available theme?

            Great!
Why you have to spoils something every time you make something good? Balance in nature?

          • Herr Pietrus

So the touch mode will have even more empty spaces?

      • Rick

I personally didn’t like the new ‘trendy’ look and feel, so I switched back to the original – which looks more classy and professional in my opinion. The new look seems very dull and boring. I know other people are liking it so I’m just glad I had the option to change it back.

      • Herr Pietrus

        Spacing and look.
Damn, where is the problem with adding an option to choose a theme if you have both of them installed?!
Don;t force us to look at this modern crap.

  • wrm

    Thanks for the update!

I really like the new theme for Windows 10, the only thing that makes me prefer the old one (for now) is the space between items in the bookmark bar, I think the space is way too large.

  • Michael Maier

I still see a Speed Dial Tab in Opera’s Task Manager although there’s no tab any more. It takes about 15 to 20 % of CPU. I can kill it, but whenever I open Speed Dial and close it this entry persists.
I like most of the work done, thanks for that.
    Some wishes:

    – possibility to separate the news
    – own Speed Dial thumbnails
    – possibility to delete the plus (or at least it’s title)

    • Nekomajin43

      +1 for the first!

    • Gloriam

You can set your own speed dial thumbnails, in a way, click on the speed dial link you want changed and go to the page, press the heart icon and switch between the thumbnails, then close the heart menu on the thumbnail you wish to use.

  • Pavel

When you going to release v36? Thanks!

    • Leonardo Gomes

You mean in the stable channel? Well, based on previous releases i would guess most probably two months after the release of 35.

      • Olli

Actually 4-6 weeks after the release of 35. So probably sometime in March (first half, I guess). 35 is probably going stable within the next 2 weeks.

  • aLvjn

I don’t know if Opera has fixed is not responding & crash issues for this version yet. But that’s a major problem for all users I believe.

  • https://twitter.com/brianrusso80 Brian A. Russo

I’m so excited to see these new features in Opera Stable :9 are nice!

  • qwerzaq

smooth scrolling is included by default in Chrome 48 and when in Opera to appear

    • xirit64

      only as an option please.

You have smooth scrolling in opera if you append “–enable-smooth-scrolling” to the target in the opera shortcut.

Thanks for the update. I don’t know if this is a known issue or intended but it’s currently not possible to ctrl + click (or middle mouse click) an article in the news to open it in the background.

    • Gloriam

Yeah, doesn’t seem to work as it did before.

Opera team, could you look at this. :)

      • Kornelia

What’s your operating system? I’ve just checked Win7 and Mac and works fine for me. Middle click opens News articles on a new tab.

        • Gloriam

Windows 10 with the windows 10 theme that came with this developer version, haven’t tried it without.

Also, it does open it in a new tab, but in the foreground, not background as it used to, I hope that helps. 😛

Opera Beta still opens a tab in the background when middle clicking on a news article.

          • Kornelia

Hi Guys, my mistake, sorry. Sure, it’s a bug. Already reported as DNA-48649. Thanks!

  • Gloriam

Good update, this way I think news on the same page could work out pretty well with the background staying the same.

I do have a request, in the old opera 12+ you could middle click beyond the [+] in the empty space to open a new tab, I was wondering if this could be implemented?
    Example: http://i.imgur.com/B1Ld7fV.png

    • BK

      Thanks..
Middle click? Hm.. let’s evaluate that.. :)

      • Gloriam

        Thanks! :)

      • EchoFromSpace

There was even an option that the new tab would go directly to the url in the clipboard when middle clicking. This was enabled by default on linux and could be enabled on window in opera://config. The setting was called: PageBar Open URL On MiddleClick. I remember I was so happy when I discovered this :)

        So, while you’re evaluating… 😉

    • Gordon Freeman

I am missing the “double click with left mouse button” feature to do so !

    • xirit64

I never bothered opening a new tab this way since day 1 when the mouse gesture feature was implemented…

  • Zero Kiryu

There’s a new flag in opera://flags called Opera Freedom feature. What’s this? Please, tell me that it’s full customization feature…

    • Ralf Brinkmann

Would be nice. :-) I don’t see any difference.

      • Kev87

Me too. I’ve enabled it and tried many things, but I don’t see a difference to anything. I hope it is some nice new feature.

  • LcGuedes

And where did the internal search field ( was exactly where now this new gear – Start page configuration I used a lot How do I enable again. . ?

    • Leonardo Gomes

      Afaik, it’s gone.

    • Kev87

Maybe an option to enable it again with the wheel would be nice for you to implement by the devs.

      • LcGuedes

Nobody missed this option ? The Google search bar , for me , and unnecessary. The internal search option – that yes – is necessary because many have not save speed dial items

        • Aneta Reluga

The speed dial items are visible as one of the bookmarks submenus, and you can perform search there. It’s just one click away, or two if you want to search only speed dials, not all bookmarks.

          • LcGuedes

Yes, it’s something plausible and I can do without problems. Aneta Reluga , thanks for the tip .

        • xirit64

          Nobody missed this option ?

          yep.
Seriously, that made sense in the “Stash” era, not anymore.

          • Kev87

            Good times… 😉

          • LcGuedes

            in your opinion

  • mattho1

Hi. Is possible change color (make it dynamic) of buttons “+” and “trash” in window header for Win10? If you have set dark color in windows theme, the buttons are barely visible. http://i66.tinypic.com/2r2auzl.jpg

  • bwat47

New windows 10 theme is looking great (aside from some oversized elements) Also really liking the changes to the start page/navigation layout in visuals. well on the way to becoming the nicest looking browser in windows 10

One thing’s really been driving me crazy since Opera 34 though, the order that new tabs open in the background by middle clicking (from the speed dial or bookmarks manager) is now inconsistent with opening tabs in the background from a webpage. See video example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lSAUCSKuX64&feature=youtu.be (browser window on left is Opera 33, right is Opera 36 dev)

Middle clicking speed dials on the sd page or bookmarks from the bookmarks manager opens tabs in the order of: 3rd clicked | 2nd clicked | 1st clicked

Middle clicking links on a regular webpage opens them like: 1st clicked | 2nd clicked | 3rd clicked

Prior to Opera 34 this behavior was consistent (it would always open in order of 1st clicked | 2nd clicked | 3rd clicked on both internal pages and websites). Starting with Opera 34, the order is reversed on internal pages like the sd and bookmarks manager, but on regular websites it’s still the regular order.

This really should behave consistently, I’ve never seen any other browser behave like this and the fact that it behaves different between the sd and webpages is confusing and messes with muscle memory. Are there any plans to fix this? I believe it’s in as DNA-44831

I don’t even mind whether they open in regular or reversed order, just that it behaves consistent between websites and internal pages…

I’ve taken to using chrome in the meantime :(

    • BK

Thanks for bringing this up, will up prioritize

Finally, the ability to remove the search box isn’t hidden behind the konami code! Would be nice to expand/hide news as and when I want to see it, rather than having it always there or always hidden. Would also be nice to remove the ‘Add a site’ speed dial, I don’t think I’ve ever used it…Looking forward to all this coming to the stable release!

    • Der Herr Nick

Yeah, this would be great! Maybe another icon on the “side bar” on the start page (do you call it side bar?)
Additionally, another icon for “Downloads” would also be highly appreciated!

We’re getting mature now. Users’ suggestions have always been welcome -now we just have the most crucial features covered already and can focus on building awesomeness 😉 in cooperation with the ones who are actively using our browser.

  • hspdion

Just one more post about this: please keep the #vibrancy-in-window-frame flag in Opera so users can disable the vibrancy effect in Yosemite & El Capitan–specifically in only Opera–if they wish.

    • Aneta Reluga

Yeah, I remember this request and I even remember myself asking why, but busy with other things I missed the answer somehow :/ so, thanks a lot for reminding me. And I’ll ask once again: does it look bad in some cases, or don’t you just like the effect?

      • hspdion

I would say it looks very bad in some cases and, overall, the effect also makes it harder to read the tabs’ text. Not a great deal, but it’s noticeable.

        • Olli

Especially because it was implemented in the wrong way and does not behave like in native OS X windows.

  • RafaellaG

Thank you for this update. Lately Opera gets better and better.

Now my request: Can you please change the spacing between speed dial items (when not displaying search box) and the top to the spacing between the search box (when displaying) and the top. So that the spacing is always the same(and a little bit greater than now)?
Now the speed dial items seem so “squeezed” to the top.
Maybe doing the same with news and the (left) sidebar items.
I think the spacing between the search bar and the top is exactly “right”^^

    thx

  • Freddy

I have some bugs to report. I’m using Windows 10 Pro x64 (version 1511).

    1. When in full screen mode, the hover of the caption buttons overlap the toolbar if the “Disable tab bar’s top spacing when browser window is maximized” preference is checked in the settings.
    2. When search results come up in Google.com, opening links in the background causes the tab animation to lag. Doesn’t happen with any other site so far. This is not caused by extensions (tried with all disabled).
    3. The hover for muting a tab has a grey square around the speaker icon, while on the stable release it looks better (the square isn’t there).
    4. If you open the bookmarks via the Opera menu, the Speed Dial, Tabs or History buttons don’t work (the column just flashes).

The new theme for Windows 10 looks fantastic. However, it needs more polishing (which I’m sure you are aware of). For example, the hover for the toolbar buttons should cover the whole toolbar height, like on Microsoft Edge.

It’s a shame that Opera is the only major browser not offering a 64bit version. I’ve read your reasons, but I still think you should offer it for the advantage in speed and security it offers over 32bit. I get it’s another build to mantain, but we are in 2016 and most computers sold today run a 64bit OS.

By the way, when is smooth scrolling going to be enabled by default? It’s going to make it to the stable channel of Chrome soon.

    • Tommy Wille

I reported the first one for you.

The square on hover is by design. Probably for consistency as when you hover over the “close tab” button.

      • Freddy

But it’s not entirely consistent. If you want it to be then the square should be the same shade of gray as the “close tab” button, and the speaker should not have a black outline. It would look cleaner that way.

        • Tommy Wille

Yes, you are correct. With the new Windows 10 theme it’s inconsistent, but in other versions it’s not. So it’s a valid suggestion to change it for the new theme.

  • Gordon Freeman

I like the new Speed Dial design !!!
But the background picture in Speed Dial is darker than e.g. “About Opera” or “Settings” page. You can take the same brightness and then add a checkerbox in
“Customize start page” for white or black font.

    • RafaellaG

      Can confirm this.
The background/theme in the “About Opera” page has the original brightness whereas the one on the speed dials page is to dark.

  • stdy_shock

Why do you call it “theme” when it’s a fucking wallpaper?

    • Leonardo Gomes

      Because it’s not a skin?

      • Dave-H

Playing devil’s advocate a bit here, I think the word “theme” implies a bit more that just changing a background image!
A “skin” is very much more than that of course, a “theme” is probably something between the two.
        I don’t condone stdy_shock’s language BTW.
        :-)

        • Leonardo Gomes

In Opera Presto, a skin allowed you to change (almost) everything: bars colors, buttons colors and design and so on.
A theme used to be a little more limited although they could change the color of the bars.

          • KONIK

            LOL it’s wallpaper nothing else 😀 😀

  • Herr Pietrus

Nice change of the news background.
Changing SD pages without that annoying blinking is also good, but I think that this left vertical bar under the SD menu icons should not change it’s opacity. Too much animations at once.

But my favourite extension still doesn’t work… :( That’s why I don’t like extensions… You change something and if the author doesn’t update his work…

    • Ralf Brinkmann

      Which extension?

      • Herr Pietrus

        Smart RSS.
I can’t resize panels in horizontal layout, what’s more articles’ list is expanded to the bottom of the screen.

      • xirit64

Mailto-button extension for example, it doesn’t work for ages, I have to use one from the Chrome extension catalogue…

        • https://www.daniel.priv.no/ Daniel Aleksandersen

Sorry, I’m not maintaining that extension anymore. No longer using Opera.

          • xirit64

            Too bad :(
Have you thought about removing it from the addons place then?

          • https://www.daniel.priv.no/ Daniel Aleksandersen

No, I don’t have access to my Opera employee email so I can’t make changes to it either.

  • Nico

Great job on the new Windows 10 theme! But please fix the look of the context menu on Speed Dial pages. It doesn’t fit the look of the other menus.

  • Herr Pietrus

Oh, one more thing, please, make the search results from the separated search field opened on then new tab… :(

  • xirit64

With #start-page-web-ui-components enabled, zooming Bookmarks at 90% does the same on Speed Dial, which is not at all desired, I hope it’s only because its WIP.

    • Tommy Wille

Without seeing the technical side of it, I would guess it’s because they are all on the same page and the content is shown and hidden based on the category you click, kinda like a single page application. But I might be wrong.

      • xirit64

I’d guess the same but the point is to do something about it which I believe they will.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/max1cp?feature=mhum Maxim

Since we have History, Downloads button should be added to the list of speed dial shortcuts. Also, double clicking on any of the shortcuts while having starpage webUI components on, makes everything invisible.

Why can’t we have same scroll bar on all web pages as the one we have on the speed dial?

    • Kev87

+1 for the shortcut. Maybe it’s time to look to opera 12, since there was in the sidebar shortcuts for addons, downloads, settings, etc. Maybe they can add this to the ones that are now there on the startpage, so that the old sidebar is then back (although it is not like the real sidebar from then = addon bar from now) and maybe an option to choose which ones are being displayed if possible.

  • laffin_boy

(Just tried to post this request to the Opera Developer forum but the forum site appears to be broken. Once you login the POST NEW DISCUSSION button disappears! Tried in O 36.0.2114.0 and in (ug) IE11) )

As I just mentioned i’m running O developer and I find it to be at least as stable as any “stable” ver of Presto I ever used and so i’d like to continue using the developer ver as my “default” browser. But when I installed this it didn’t write to the registry so Win 7 doesn’t know it exists + there’s no MAKE DEFAULT button in the options. Now I probably could cobble together a reg file to “register” Opera – maybe even without breaking the registry but i’m hoping that you can offer a better solution. But i’m really tired of cutting & pasting from my email app and i’m not going to drop back to the stable ver (that’s 6-12 mos behind?) just to get it ‘installed’ to the reg.

    How about it?

    • Ralf Brinkmann

No, you should go into the system settings of Windows. Look for “Standard Programs”. I hope, this is in English the same as in German. There you can select “Set you default programs”, find Opera and confirm. Then you have to restart Opera. I have the same problem after each update for many versions now.

      • laffin_boy

Thanks for answering, Ralf, but that won’t work because Opera was never “installed” to the registry. When I ran the dev install program it didn’t write anything to the registry – therefore, as far as Windoze is concerned, there is no Opera browser on the computer and it can’t be made default by that method.

I could download & install the stable ver of Opera, make it “default”, export the Opera install info from the registry, uninstall the desktop version, change the paths in the reg file to the dev ver and then re-write the reg file to the registry.

But if I could get an “install” reg file from Opera or someone else so I know *exactly* what keys & values need to be written to a Win 7 64 bit registry than I can change the paths in the file with no problem.

        • Ralf Brinkmann

I don’t know why Opera is not “installed” to your registry. I have Opera installed as standalone version on my W10x64 system and it is in the registry (was the same in W7x64). So I can find it there and make it my default browser.

  • tarkus

I have win 8.1 but maybe there are similarities with win 7: Have you tried to open control panel -> default programs -> associate a file type with a program and then begin to associate each file extension associated with O stable (html, url, etc) to Opera developer? If O developer is not shown, I believe there is an option to look in your computer for a program for association purposes. You can go to the Opera folder in the program files and assign it as default. This has to be repeated for every ‘web’ extension. After the first assignment there is a possibility of Win ‘registering’ the program. Well, maybe I’m wrong but that’s what I came up with!

PS this is to answer to laffin_boy

  • Marko Koivuniemi

Synchronizing tabs are quite useless for me because I cannot restore state of my another browser where I have 4 windows for separate things. Is there way to achieve that or is this planned. (Without copying sessions file)

    • Marko Koivuniemi

I copied Current Session and couple of other files from my Windows 10 machine to my new OS X 10.11 machine and it seems fine. But I like to have opportunity to really sync my browsing sessions between my machines.

      • Aneta Reluga

In a nutshell: there are more use cases like this that were (and afaik are) considered, however – as this is huge (think all differences across versions/platforms, including mobile) – I wouldn’t make any bets on that. I am sorry.

Can we move tabs between windows or it does not work only in my system?

Strange scrolling behaviour on several sites: When I scroll up/down alternately using the touch screen, scrolling only works every third or forth time – otherwise nothing happens. This occurs e.g. on this page: https://www.ndr.de/nachrichten/niedersachsen/oldenburg_ostfriesland/fluechtlinge/Vorzeige-Familie-nach-Serbien-abgeschoben,abschiebung518.html
On other pages, e.g. this very site, everything’s fine.
    Can anyone confirm?

Hi, there is one more user’s suggestion: Please make us happy and add more customization options, most importantly, allow users move the bookmark bar on the right side of address pane. With 16:9 or 16:10 screens we don’t need address bar to be like 1600px wide, there is enough space for entire bookmark toolbar. Thank you

  • http://andreas8.wordpress.com/ Andreas

Dear Opera, why you have “rusTavhengig”, but no have, “rusavhengig”?
    http://s28.postimg.org/acg6ob6a5/why_no_rusavhengig.jpg

    • Tommy Wille

Because they didn’t create the dictionary in use. You can see where the source comes from in settings under “Browser” -> “Dictionaries”

      • http://andreas8.wordpress.com/ Andreas

Ah, but you see… Funny thing is, in Norwegian, “rusTavhengig” is not a word, still it’s there. However, “rusavhengig” is a word, and it’s not there.
        You so funny, Opera!

  • tarkus

My regular repetition – Two vital mouse gestures are missing: Scrolling through tabs & open new tab in background (In general, I would prefer cloning tabs with the same gestures as the ones that open links in foreground/background – when, of course, are not performed on a link)!
My suggestion for the future: Create nested folders in the speed dial tiles, making the traditional bookmarks a thing of the past (everything in the speed dial) and smoke the competition!

    • Vux777

My suggestion for the future: Create nested folders in the speed dial tiles, making the traditional bookmarks a thing of the past (everything in the speed dial) and smoke the competition!

  • postdante

Why are you starting to make tabs rounded? (under Windows) Squared ones are fine! (like in the current stable and beta channels). Please make them back or at least give option for that.

Please don’t make the same mistake that Mozilla did with it’s hideous FF australis.

Other thing is that Linux tabs are rounded (and ugly) from the beginning and they do not conform with the current Windows releases – are you going to fix that?

    • Harry

What’s wrong with rounded tabs? Where is it written that thou shalt not use rounded tabs?

Personally, I like them. If Opera wants to be different, so be it.

      • postdante

If you like them, good for you. I don’t like them. It’s a matter of personal taste.
For the same reason I can’t use FF (mobile version looks like an old gingerbread app and now they claim to remove ‘complete theming’ support for desktop version, which means bye bye to the ‘FT DeepDark’ marvel)

But if Opera claims it’s making the browser to conform with Windows 10 aesthetics, they shouldn’t round the tabs and they should make the other rounded elements, like buttons, squared, not the way around.

The same should go with Opera for Linux under different gtk themes (e.g FlatStudio).

At least an option should be given to the users based on their feedback. If not, well, Vivaldi is coming around 😉

Tab stacking and customizable search engines, people!!!
    Get your shit back together!
I don’t need to remove the default search engines, but I NEED TO BE ABLE TO CHANGE THE KEYWORDS.

Dear Opera, new ideas are fine, but why remove the old options as well ???

    1. Right now the bookmark / speed dial / News etc tabs are all on the left side, why can’t we have an option to move them to the bottom like in Opera 35 its quicker to move a mouse there than up and to the left !!!

    2. Your themes in 36, doesn’t seem to support a white background, I have tried using a plane white file to make a background and it always comes out grey ??? (using Win7)

      opera adds overlay to themes
to have better contrast on letters and elements
if you don’t want it, in your theme persona.ini add this

      [Start Page]
      use overlay = false
      title text color = #000060

      EDIT:
also, in stable you need to enable flag
      opera://flags/#no-theme-overlay

I think in developer builds that flag is enabled by default

Thanks, I am using version 36.0.2130.46 Stable. I am not a developer, so I am no expert, but I enabled the opera://flags/#no-theme-overlay … but I still had the overlay … so I tried to also copy your ini instructions, this is how my persona.ini file reads …

        [Start Page]use overlay=falseTitle Text Color=#000060Title Text Shadow=none

But then the theme disappeared and went back to the default theme … any ideas ?

you probably need to pull it out of Opera profile folder (copy)
make all changes, save it as zip file and then return it into
          …profiledatathemes
or drag and drop to internal Opera page themes

here is a test theme to play with

Thanks, the test theme worked out for me !!!
