@Opera team: Could you please give us a status update regarding the browser freezes under Windows 10 Build 1511?

    • Marcin Mitek

We are investigating it. Thanks :)

      • muratservan

Are you still investigating for 6 months after release of Windows 10? You guys should focus on fixing issues instead of polishing UI. Sorry I had to say.

        • Marcin Mitek

There’s been already quite amount of changes with the latest big (Threshold) update to Windows 10 that required investigation and changes from our side, what’s weird in it? Windows 10 is far from static/finished/mature software, whatever you name it. It still requires investigation.

          • muratservan

I had this issue since august. There is 3 months between build 1511 and july build. No excuse please. I don’t want to have pain when using other browsers. C’mon guys…

          • https://vivaldi.net/unity/profile/chas4/6-blog Chas4

Win 10 had a update in November that changed some things

          • muratservan

But I had this before build 1511. Aren’t we talking about same thing?
Desktop notifications crash Opera. I disabled Twitch Now and SurfEasy because of this.

          • https://vivaldi.net/unity/profile/chas4/6-blog Chas4

Yep, parts of Windows got changed a bit and developers have to look at the changes and test many things

          • eXzentrik

The freezes I mean are caused by certain HTML5 contents. Vivaldi is affected of the bug, too. So I guess it’s a problem in the Blink engine, but it exists only under build 1511 here. Windows 8.1 and older versions of Windows 10 are not affected here. Maybe there’s also a conjunction with build 1511, Blink engine and GeForce cards (I got one in use).

          • muratservan

Opps my bad, sorry. I thought we are walking about same problem.

          • Mikolaj Boc

@muratservan:disqus could you please specify the steps needed to reproduce the crash? The notifications kind of work for me. https://www.dropbox.com/sh/jynhni925zqb2vw/AAABWGyM5r5SwTD4RNQvVXLQa?dl=0

          • muratservan

It happens when Windows itself disables action center. I can’t enable it because in notifications settings menu it says “some settings are managed by your organization”. I don’t use any program like advanced system care or ccleaner. So my registery is clean and untouched. This is a clean, fully upgraded 1511 build. Anyways it was happening before 1511 too.

Some extensions (twitch now, surfeasy etc) and websites (web.whatsapp.com etc) which give desktop notification crash Opera. It happens till Opera disables all extensions, but interesting thing is it also happens when I only open private tab which has 0 extension.

Another interesting thing is I can get desktop notificaitons when using Vivaldi even action center is disabled by Windows..

I think I am not only one who has this problem. You can see here: https://addons.opera.com/tr/extensions/details/twitch-now/?display=en&reports#feedback-container

I have a bad english, I hope I could specify it well. Thanks for the help.

          • Vux777

notification click doesn’t work for a long time….

          • Mikolaj Boc

Damn that’ll be the first thing I’ll look at today!

      • eXzentrik

By the way: With deactivated hardware acceleration I got much less tab freezes since this stable version. Could be a coincidence, though. But with the last version I had many tab freezes a day (or browser freezes with activated HWA).

    • http://giuseppeattanasio.com master94ga

      Yep, this is very annoying

    • muratservan

I can’t use some of my extensions because of this problem.

  • L33t4opera

Hi Radek, congrats on the first build for this year, and I wish you all a successful, and productive 2016 😉

  • Kev87

Since a few builds there is a little bug in the pdf reader. When you open a file in opera and you right click on the pdf, the options to rotate the page in both sides have the same shortcut (http://prntscr.com/9p3qa5 ). If I remember well it was ctrl-shift-+ and crtl-shift– in the past (correct me if I am wrong) but that also doesn’t seem to work anymore. And apart from that, thanks for the first update for this year!

    DNA-46831 Issues with Montenegrin language

When I read it I had to laugh. It’s not a language is’s at best a dialect.

    • Marcin Mitek

Oh, language politics 😉 Well, it’s on our *language* list, so from our point of view it’s a language (technically).

You could say the same about UK/US English variants – is it that different to be a separate entry on the language list? Yet it quite often is :)

      • Dark Magician

I know. In Serbia we joke about it, because they have a kind of a complex and made up a couple words and letters so they could claim it’s not Serbian or Serbo-Croatian. There are maybe a couple of different words, and everybody understands each other.

We speak the same language but keep arguing like little kids that we don’t.
Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia, Montenegro everybody speaks the same language and keeps saying in that language that we don’t.
It’s kind of a Monty Python sketch.

I’m having trouble with Opera doing a lot of this: http://cl.ly/0C1z1z1l2r25 since first 34 stable. Just cycling tabs causes those bugs. Some tabs only renders in the upper left 1/4 of the browser window. A reload would render the page correctly. Known issue?

    • Arjan van Leeuwen

Hi @trimn:disqus , this is not a known issue. Which version of OS X are you using, and on which Mac?

      • http://tmn.io/ Tri

Using latest Mac OS X (10.11.2) on a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch mid 2014, with the i7 and the 750M GPU).

        • Arjan van Leeuwen

So you actually have the exact same system I do, I guess that’s nice :). However I don’t see this problem. Do you have any other ideas on how to reproduce? Any non-default flags turned on in opera://flags? Settings that might be interesting?

          • http://tmn.io/ Tri

            hah, nice! 😀

Changed is 0, so guess nothing was changed there. I haven’t tried the well known “delete the Opera files form Applications Support and Preferences” yet tho. Hoping that I don’t have to do that. Hm, you anything else I can check. No extensions activated either.

          • Arjan van Leeuwen

Do you know which GPU is in use when you see the problem, the integrated Intel or the discrete Nvidia? Or does the problem appear with both? You can run gfxcardstatus (https://gfx.io) to keep an eye on it.

You don’t need to remove your profile to test Opera with a clean profile. You can try this from the command line:

            open -a /Applications/Opera.app –args –user-data-dir=$HOME/opera_test

This will create a new profile directory called opera_test in your home directory and use it for this session. Your existing profile is left alone, and when you start Opera normally it’ll still use your usual profile.

          • https://vivaldi.net/unity/profile/chas4/6-blog Chas4

Might be a corrupted cache (I have the same GPU on a older model MBP), would holding a shift key with a page reload fix it?

          • http://tmn.io/ Tri

            @arjanvanleeuwen:disqus
looks like this only happens when I use external monitors (the discrete Nvidia will always be turned on apparently when using external displays(?)). And the browser window is on my Mac display. The most common form of this glitch looks like this: http://cl.ly/0Y0b1X3D4523 (the site only renders in the upper left corner)..

I’ve got two displays plugged into the thunderbolt ports (three displays active total), and the Opera window on the Mac display. Tried with the browser window in different sizes, doesn’t matters. But when it happens, and you resize the browser window, it gets back to normal.

            @chasapple:disqus
a reload renders the page correctly, but it returns to that state after cycling the tabs. But it’s not very consistent. It’s not always the same tab that turns into this fancy renders.

          • Arjan van Leeuwen

Do you move the browser window between displays or does it happen even if the browser window has only been on your Mac display from the start?

For reference, the bug is that it’s rendering the page at a scale that would be correct for your external displays, which I guess are not Retina screens.

          • http://tmn.io/ Tri

It happens even if the browser window has only been on my Mac display. But when moved to another display, it renders correctly. And ye, my externals are non-retina.

          • https://vivaldi.net/unity/profile/chas4/6-blog Chas4

Is opera://flags/#inert-visual-viewport enabled, a few stable versions ago I had a similar issue (like what is in the screenshot) with some pages being loaded like they were on a phone screen, and it turned out to be the viewpoint flag

          • http://tmn.io/ Tri

Nope, it’s not. Did you have it enabled? Looks like it’s what @arjanvanleeuwen:disqus mentioned about a bug where Opera renders page with wrong scale. It thinks it’ll on a non-retina display, when it renders on the retina display (since I’ve got two non-retinas connected to the computer, and one of them is set to primary display).

@Arjan, did you pinpoint the bug?

    • Kev87

I also had that issue in one of the first stable builds of windows 10. (but in you case it is on mac), but that was when I moved my browser window to the left or to the right of the screen. Now I haven’t seen this no more since a month or two, so I guess it’s fixed (can also be the case that it was a windows issue though, idk).I don’t know if these ones are related at all, but it was almost the same thing that I saw on my screen.

  • mikemanger

Now the blog lives in a directory some of the changelog blog post links are broken (missing the ‘blogs’ from the url).. might need to do a find and replace in the WordPress wp_posts tables. :)

  • Nachiketa Ramesh

FINALLY> I was checking this blog like EVERY DAY and nothing happened. So happy now.

    • Mikolaj Boc

Prepare for new builds gushing from the blogs.

      • Vux777

        I …I must..resist
not to put link to Rollins band video 😛

        The excitement builds

  • Spideymang

Thank you for all the support Radek and Opera staff!

  • blue_screen

The button “restart now” in opera://about/ does not work as expected:
New Opera version is not installed when using this button.
opera://about/ still shows the old version after the update.

    Win 7 pro 32bit, Opera 34.0.2036.25

    • ayespy

Same here on Win10 64. I NEVER restart until the update indicates that a restart will trigger the update, and the update is almost never done on restart. Always have to close it down, wait a bit, and start again.

      • https://vivaldi.net/unity/profile/chas4/6-blog Chas4

I found if you wait a minute or so to make sure the downlaod completes then click restart it works most of the time

        • ayespy

That’s kind of my whole point. You have to wait. If you just press the “restart to update” button without waiting, it doesn’t update. That means the button appears too early, or the entire procedure needs to be integrated, so that the browser ACTUALLY UPDATES before re-starting. “Restart to update” is a false label if that’s not what actually happens.

          • https://vivaldi.net/unity/profile/chas4/6-blog Chas4

I think it is a small bug with the updater on Windows of showing the restart button before the update is ready to install on restart of the browser

  • http://djdb.me/ DJDB

After updating, the Mute tab option disappeared from the context menu. How do i re-enable it?

    • Kev87

According to the changelog, they disabled it by default for this version. I think that when Opera 35 becomes stable, it will be enabled by default again. If you want it back now, just enable the flag opera://flags/?search=mute#mute-tabs and restart the browser.

  • https://vivaldi.net/unity/profile/chas4/6-blog Chas4

Looks like HD videos on Facebook work with this update

    • Cryio

Still broken on my end, with or without latest Flash. Opera is version 34.0.2036.47

      • https://vivaldi.net/unity/profile/chas4/6-blog Chas4

        Flash Player at 20.0.0.267?

Try holding down shift and reload the page (might be a bad cache file)

Done 2 videos with no pixelation of the images

        • Cryio

Hmm. I updated Flash exactly after I posted my comment. Didn’t see they updated yesterday. Yeah, now it’s finally fixed.

          • https://vivaldi.net/unity/profile/chas4/6-blog Chas4

It was a emergency security update from Adobe at the end of December 2015

          • Cryio

No, I mean Flash was updated yesterday (well, 12 January).

          • https://vivaldi.net/unity/profile/chas4/6-blog Chas4

The update itself came out late December 2015 (Adobe did not do Flash Player they had Acrobat/Reader updates yesterday)

        • http://eliotime.com/ eliotime3000

Since Flash Player Overview website, it shows the avariable versions of Flash Player for all the avariable browsers (including the PPAPI).

Actually, the priority of the udpate is on the ActiveX edition of Flash Player for Windows 8/8.1/10 and Windows 7, wich haves critical bugs for the EOL of IE 10 on Windows 8.

Let’s wait until Adobe will bring the updates of the Flash Player for NPAPI and PPAPI plugin.

  • Dark Magician

Anyway it’s time for 64-bit Windows build, you are now the only browser without it.
At first it was understandable, since Google didn’t do 64-bit.

    • muratservan

Will 64-bit really make significant change?

      • Cryio

Better usage of RAM allocation and CPU with less overhead? Yes. It will.

      • Dark Magician

It might. Anyway there is no excuse not to have it, because Chromium is now 64-bit. And Opera had it (I think then only IE was 64-bit besides Opera), so it’s a regression.

  • Jari Karjalainen

    Does npapi plugins still work?

    • https://vivaldi.net/unity/profile/chas4/6-blog Chas4

Kinda (it is behind a flag right now), tho in the future it will be gone

  • Dark Magician

    New regression:
Speed Dial doesn’t react on click, after opening it.
    Replication:
Best I can tell it’s random, did nothing special.

Also, I think you should go ahead of the curve and start showing crossed lock for non HTTPS sites, and move all you domains to HTTPS.
    Why is the blog plaintext?

  • MountainGoat

    I just upgraded to opera-developer 36.0.2106.0 from 36.0.2079.0 on a debian linux i386 system.

Noticed right away that all audio played with opera, for example pandora or youtube, had a crackling sound although it played fine with chromium. This happened even after doing an update-pepperflashplugin-nonfree –install

Immediately reverted to 36.0.2079.0 and the problem went away.

  • catup

No one pays attention to the Opera icon in the windows 10 starting menu??It has been totally white for a while!!!!

  • Dark Magician

Windows 10 always keeps repeating the dialog to keep Opera default browser.
I don’t know if it’s Windows bug, or something in Opera.

    • Tommy Wille

Have you clicked ‘always use this program’ in the popup dialog? Also, Windows 10 will ask you again if you install new web browsers. Check default programs in settings and see if Opera is recognized as default browser by Windows.

  • Bali505

Unfortunately I must confirm a weird freezing issue on Win10.
Never had that before with New Opera…

It will stay my favorite browser but, of course 😉

  • Harry

Just a small question. I hope this is the appropriate forum.

I am patiently awaiting the arrival of a sidebar toggle switch in the address bar.

Is there a hidden flag or any other way of doing this?

    • Aneta Reluga

Do you mean the start page sidebar?

      • Harry

The one that displays when you click Opera … Extensions … Sidebar.

        • Tommy Wille

No toggle button as of today other than keyboard shortcut, CTRL+Shift+S

          • Harry

            Thanks for replying.

I can live with that for now.

  • L33t4opera
