Welcome in the New Year! Today, we have the first developer release for 2016. This release is packed with features, some of them expected already by the ones who like to play with the flags, but we still hope there are going to be some nice surprises here.

Start Page layout change

The Start Page features quite a number of changes. In the attempt to increase ergonomics, the start page navigation panel is now positioned on the left side. Apart from that, we decided to merge News and Speed Dial, creating one simplified and configurable Start Page (please note the “Customize start page” cogwheel option in the top right corner):

Merged startpage with customization

Extension expander

We also enabled the extension expander for all those who tend to have many extensions and would like to access all of them even if they don’t fit on the toolbar, without having to refer to opera:extensions. Please note that the screenshot below contains quite a number of random (but nonetheless great for sure) extensions which are there only for demonstration purposes 😉

Opera UI for Windows 10 and touch screens

Windows 10 users, particularly these using touch screens, should notice some substantial UI improvements. These are currently hidden behind the flag #windows-10-skin but we decided to mention these anyway because the change, in our view, should be really pleasing.

First of all, you can now control whether you want the system or Opera colors by switching the setting in Browser -> Show system color on top bar.

Off and On examples

Second, the touch users will have additional icon for the full screen mode:

Fullscreen button

And, touch users will notice bigger context menus when Opera was activated by touch:

Bookmark deduplication improvements

Along with a few minor fixes, we have identified and fixed DNA-47472. Wit this fix, bookmark deduplication should now work more smoothly, and we are hopeful for a flawless performance. Please check out for yourselves and see if it works for you!

——

We have also fixed a few crashes and updated the Chromium version to 49.0.2593.0.

Known issues

— We are aware of a renderer crash on pages containing videos with audio. This is Chromium-specific and already reported.
— It is impossible to configure News (country and categories) until you turn the flag #personalized-news-start-page on – the fix is on its way and should be available in the next developer release.
— At rare occassions, Speed Dial may be broken on the fresh USB installation. Relaunching Opera fixes the issue.

  • Leonardo Gomes

Thanks for the first developer build of the year. Hope to see many more.

  • Bill Gates

opera 12 better! please go back to presto, tabs stacks, mail, custom menu/buttons etc.

    • Druszlak

      Boring…

      • Bill Gates

of course boring, no innovations anymore.

        • Mikolaj Boc

Technically speaking, presto, tab stacks, mail, custom menu/buttons wouldn’t be innovations because it’s something from the past 😉

          • Kev87

But sometimes it is not a bad idea to bring some things from the past back 😉

          • Mikolaj Boc

Sure, just joking. As we’ve always been saying, we’re constantly looking at features and selecting those that seem the most beneficial for the majority of users.

          • Gloriam

With this new developer version you’re finally making more options available to us to customize Opera, thanks for that. :)

  • Kev87

Thanks for the update! So far everything seems fine with no crashes. But in the customize start page wheel button, I miss the option to filter the news in categories or country, like it was before. Or is this option somewhere else available?

    • Marcin Mitek

      Read the known issues :)

      • Kev87

Oh, I’ve read the post a bit too fast out of excitement :)

      • Herr Pietrus

I miss the option to choose which category I want to read about, lik it was on the separate page. Now I have to tick for example sport and untick news if I want to read the news from one particular category at the time

  • http://pedro.albuquerques.net Pedro Albuquerque Santos

Does the inclusion of the extension expander also means that you are now able to reorder the extension icons? The lack of that feature is one of the few things that annoys me when compared to Google Chrome.

    • Aneta Reluga

Currently only under the expander, not on the main bar, but we are aiming for that.

  • plague

I don’t want News in my Speed Dial, as I have plenty of dials there already and want to keep it clean, so I turned it off.
But now I don’t have access to News at all instead…

Please consider re-adding the News icon back to the navigation panel if it’s turned off in the Speed Dial.

    • Herr Pietrus

      Totally agree!

    • Kev87

I also agree. Maybe you can just add a link to the a separate news page (the news page it was like in stable now) in the menu only, so that it doesn’t have to be on the speed dial twice then (link+news itself)

    • Gloriam

This is a must, I will stop using the news feature or try to force back the old start menu (once it comes to Beta) if it’s not added as a button while turning it off.

  • http://genius-lab.org/ Serghei Bulah

Thanks for the smooth Win 10 look and more options for customizing! Great job.

  • Bill Gates

    no search in speed dial.

    • BK

yes, is this a problem for you?

  • Cyrris

These UI improvements are the best changes I’ve seen in a long time, and are sure to keep me from switching for the forseeable future. Well done on a big first 2016 release.

I nearly blew a gasket when I saw you’d merged the news on to the speed dial, but after trying it out, I really like it. I can understand why others might prefer the separation though, and I do need to say that whatever you decide, the snappiness of the speed dial is paramount, so please ensure the performance remains responsive.

My biggest remaining problem: clicking quickly on a speed dial tile and accidentally hitting the (x) as it appears on hover. I have done this at least a dozen times now. Please move the close button down to where the text label is, or increase the hover time before it appears.

    • BK

Thanks, we will look into this.

  • plague

    Bug:
The sound in atleast Twitch is extremely high and crackling in this build, despite the Volume Mixer in Windows (Windows 10) being set to very very low (15%) on everything, including Opera and Master Volume.

This does not happen in older builds and it does not happen in Chrome.

    • Aneta Reluga

Thanks for the report – logging. Internally DNA-48140 for the record.

    • wrm

I can confirm, the sound crackling on Twitch but not only, same problem on online radio (like ah.fm). I tried to understand what was the problem with my speakers for hours before I realize the problem was only on Opera.

  • Ralf Brinkmann

Happy New Year and congratulations to the first new version of this year. What I found out:

The new startpage is ok. First I was shocked about the big “News”, but then I could switch them off. Good. Finally it is possible to switch off the Google search field without contortions! Good.

The download of an *.exe-file like the new update version still creates a subfolder “exe” in the download folder and hides the downloaded file there. I DON’T WANT THIS. I can create my own fubfolders if I want to play.

It is still not possible to select all entries of downloaded files in the download manager (CTRL-J) and to delete them by keyboard or to reach the button “Download List” by keyboard and execute it. Vivaldi can!

Some pictograms look smaller now in Windows 10, for example the little extension images and the “O” on the tab of http://get.opera.com/ftp/pub/. Also the speed dial folders on the start page. Is that a W10-thing or must I change anything?

    • Herr Pietrus

“The download of an *.exe-file like the new update version still creates a subfolder “exe” in the download folder and hides the downloaded file there. I DON’T WANT THIS. I can create my own fubfolders if I want to play.”

Totally agree… annoying and stupid bug.
It is a bug, isn’t it?

      • Aneta Reluga

Nope. It is done on purpose as a part of certain solutions in development. My apologies, but I truly cannot give any details at this stage.

    • xirit64

I actually like the creating of folders according to their file extension, it can be helpful for older people who can’t sort & move the downloaded files by themselves.

      • Ralf Brinkmann

Why should I sort my downloaded files? They are already sorted by name. I want to see these files at once and to use them (for installation and so on). This is not the funny “easter-egg-search-game”. “Older people” who can’t sort and move don’t use Opera. They use their 12 years old granddaughter or grandson.

  • Zik

MS Edge still has faster 2-finger-zoom with touch-screen than Opera.
But new skin more better for touch.

  • https://laukstein.com Binyamin

    Just updated to version 36.0.2106.0.
It is missing mentioned chrome://settings “Browser” > “Show system color on top bar”.

    • Mikolaj Boc

You need to be on Windows 10 Threshold or later to see that thing.

      • https://laukstein.com Binyamin

The issue noticed on up-to-date Windows 10 Pro 64-bit.

        • Mikolaj Boc

Could you please tell me what your Windows 10 build is?

          • Vux777

this is how it looks on my win 10 x64

          • Mikolaj Boc

            Did you enable #windows-10-skin?

          • Vux777

            no,
            and now when I did
everything looks overblown and no title color from windows
            http://prntscr.com/9plyhg

          • Mikolaj Boc

What’s your winver? Run->winver OS Build

          • Vux777

            10586.36
            it’s on previous screenshots

          • Mikolaj Boc

Yeah sorry missed it. Actually I’m just checking whether the Windows version is 10 and if the flag is enabled. In those cases the setting should be shown. And you probably should set the accent color in Display Settings -> Personalize -> Colors

          • Vux777

yea, I forgot about dedicated option in settings
…still , BB height is much bigger than before

          • Mikolaj Boc

How high would you suggest it be to be easy to target with a finger and not too high at the same time? Maybe making it higher only in tablet mode is the solution, how do you think?

          • Vux777

you already have different UI elements for “touch” mode…

          • Mikolaj Boc

We’ll think about it. Thanks for testing!

          • Vux777
          • Vux777

            overblown as bookmarks bar height

      • https://laukstein.com Binyamin

It might be that I had already “Opera developer” on machine before upgrading to Windows 10 from Windows 7, in case if it changes anything.

  • Robert

and in this version hangs when I fix it?

    • Leonardo Gomes

You will need to provide more details.

  • Dave-H

I really like the changes to the Speed Dial, when it gets to stable there will be quite a few happy that the Google search bar can now be easily removed!
Two issues I reported last time haven’t been fixed sadly. The controls on HTML5 videos still do not behave as they should, and the browser is still crashing when I try to sync! :-(

  • https://github.com/rtws/ dqdb@rtws

What about an option to the new speed dial settings windows to hide + button?

    • Stanislav Stratil

How long it is when we first requested that?

      • https://github.com/rtws/ dqdb@rtws

This is an ongoing request since first Opera 15 build, so it is older than 2.5 years :)

        • Kev87

At that time there were more important things to do first for the Opera team, but right now they are in a stage where they might consider this. But I personally don’t see a reason why you should hide this. There will be more space and only your speed dial links, but you cannot add new speed dial pages anymore then (or you have to do it in the heart menu).

          • xirit64

Right Click on free area, “add to speed dial” :)

          • Kev87

Ok you’re right there, but I am still not 100% convinced though 😉 Anyway its to the Opera devs to decide, not me :)

    • BK

There are no plans to add this for the time being.
Is this the most important problem with the browser for you ?

      • Nekomajin43

Is this the most challenging feature to implement?

        • mies

Don’t troll. It really can be a time consuming task. You never know until you see the code yourself. But nevertheless it’s worth efforts. Advanced users want this customization and even inexperienced users asked me how to hide this button.

      • Ghirahim

Absolutely not, but is it that hard to add that option? :3

      • mies

Well, speed dial is a main page user sees. It’s quite important to make it look nice and ergonomic. That is why we already have ability to change background, change number of columns and select either text thumbnail or screenshot thumbnail. In this build you make further improvements related to speed dial design. So it looks quite important to polish speed dial further including this ability to hide “plus button”.

      • shane

Given the choice between news on the speed dial vs removing the ‘+’ button I’d certainly choose removing the ‘+’ button. At this point it is certainly up there in the most important problems. The start page is used a lot and is the ‘face of the browser’. Opera have bothered to add themes etc to the background to make it look nice, but not fully polish it by allowing removing this button.

For some people the ‘+’ button would push the news section further down the page. So even if news is the most important thing for Opera to be adding for revenue purposes removing the ‘+’ could help.

So it does seem worthwhile bringing up especially when a new speed dial settings panel has been added in this build.

      • Matheus Bombonato

I’ve never used this button. I add items through the hear menu.
An option to hide it would be great! Can be a hidden flag, but give us this option please :)

        • Herr Pietrus

I add the site to SD when I visit that site. Same as you I’ve never used that huge plus button, also in Opera Presto…

  • Cryio

Finally! Windows 10 improvements. Marvelous new additions. It was about time guys.

  • xirit64

Nicely done. I liked that with News optional in the sidebar, and the sidebar itself. The extension expander, themes for easy access.

    Some notions:
    – On a 15.4″ 16:10 laptop a zoom of 90% should provide 6 rows instead of 5, like it was before. To have 6 you have to zoom now to 75% which makes everything too small. Or provide +/-5 zooming increments.
    – The position of the tiles close to the address bar is nice but I’d say just a little more downwards is better like 3 pixels or something to give it more breathing room.
    – Rocker gestures: Completely redesign it for navigating easily and fast through tabs using the mouse. Who uses it in the current condition? I suspect by your telemetry data no one :)

  • Spideymang

Please make Extension expander a stable feature !!!! I looks great 😀 also start Page layout you rock!!!

    • https://vivaldi.net/unity/profile/chas4/6-blog Chas4

It will make it to stable when it is ready, see http://blogs.opera.com/desktop/streams/ for info on the different streams

    • BK

      That’s the plan !

  • Кostadin

Nice touch to the bookmark heart :) Certified by a certified colorblind man :)

    • Mikolaj Boc

I don’t quite get what you mean… But if you have any suggestions please define those explicitly.

      • Tommy Wille

I think he means with the new brighter red color of the heart, it’s easier for those with color weaknesses to actually see that you have bookmarked a page. So it’s a positive change you’ve done. Red and green is especially difficult for those with color blindness to recognize properly.

        • Mikolaj Boc

Oh, I see. Thanks for an explanation :)

        • hicksdesign

Yep, it’s a good design principle to not rely on colour alone to convey information – the intention is that the default icon state on Win10 (Outline icon rather than filled) provides a good contrast with the red, filled one :)

          • Vux777

            while on design subject

you could reduce number of those vertical stripes on start page and expand dimmed area from sidebars (bookmarks, history etc..) all the way to the left edge, so that it covers (goes under) webUI components

            http://prntscr.com/9uoq5y

          • xirit64

doesn’t look that better imo, maybe if there was a separator line until the end of the history icon.

  • Nekomajin43

So, what if I want to use News, but as a separate page, because I like my speed dial clean?

    • BK

Have you been using News as a separate feature?

      • Nekomajin43

Not at all. :) But I think about other users.

And if you integrate the RSS reader into News, I will use it, so it’s relevant.

        • BK

          Ah, ok :)
So you are planing to use News after we integrate RSS, but not unitl it’s on SD ?

          • Nekomajin43

Yes. I used the RSS reader in O12 and I use an extension now. But I have many speed dial items and I don’t like crowded pages.

However, I don’t think this implamentation is bad as long as I can turn it off like now. But a separate News page can live next to the start page. You have the code, you just have to load it on the start page and on a separate page too.

      • Herr Pietrus

        I had… :(

    • Юлия

Mine isn’t combined and I think is because of this flag. I don’t remember having it changed but hey.. You might want to give it a try.
      https://i.imgur.com/0RmwUM6.jpg

( colour changes depending of the page? nice touch, Opera :) I just noticed )

  • NoName

    Opening Settings (Alt+P) crashes/reopens Opera.
    Win 8.1

    • Aneta Reluga

      I am unable to confirm – neither on 8.1 64bit nor 7 64bit.
Can you open other internal pages (e.g. Themes or Extensions) or do they crash for you as well?
How does the Downloads page behave for you?
      Thanks in advance.

      • NoName

I’m not at my work computer at the moment, but I tried go on remote desktop to it, but now Settings works just fine :(

I don’t know if remote desktop could be the reason for it working now.

I have to test again tomorrow, when I’m back physically at the computer.

Edit: opera:about worked fine when Settings was crashing.

        • Aneta Reluga

Thanks a lot! It would be valuable info, since I don’t see any reason why it would crash due to RD connection, but if it does so, it still needs investigating and your help is appreciated.

          • NoName

Just to be clear: It’s when I was NOT on RD it was crashing. I just used RD to test further, but then it didn’t crash.

I just tested it without RD again, I am no longer able to crash Opera on my work machine as before :(

I saw that Opera have disabled my extensions after the crashes, but after re-enabling, still no crash.

It’s funny how I am now annoyed that Opera is not crashing :)

The only thing I can think of doing before the crash disappeared, was visiting opera:themes as you suggested. But this is a long shot.

Report back if you want further testing.

Edit: I have crash reports enabled, so hopefully you have stacktraces of it.

          • Aneta Reluga

You’ve done a lot already. But if you spot reproducible steps, you are welcome to submit them :) Thanks!

    • Marko Koivuniemi

Cannot also confirm with 10 64-bit

  • Wraith

Why the team always have to mess with the speed dial look, I was confortable with the last design and bammm you come with a new look, that’s not nice :(, and I have to use 90% zoom to make the things fits with 6 item per row.

    • BK

We could actually deliver 6 item per row on 100%, seems there is a place for it.
How much SD’s do you use?

      • Nekomajin43

        How about custom size tiles?

        • BK

Yeah, maybe. We actually have that in bookmarks manager already.

          • Nekomajin43

I don’t see any difficulty in it. It was implemented in one of the earlier version of the speed dial, and it worked fine. What I loved the most is that I was able to set the same width and height.

      • Wraith

The 6 item per row never work for me, no matter what value above 5 is set in Settings, the speed dial only show 5 at 100%.

        • xirit64

This is not how it’s working, it means that if you zoom out then your rows won’t be kept locked at 5.

          • Wraith

Hmmm you are right!, I thought that this is to set 6 item per row at 100%.

      • shane

The ability to disable the ‘+ Add a site’ dial would save some real estate. It is quite redundant and occupies a lot of premium real estate space for something that is rarely used. The new settings panel could have a flag to disable it.

        • Gloriam

I’d definitely like to see this being implemented.

      • Herr Pietrus

It depends on the window’s size and screen resolution. I have only 4 items in a row.
1440×900, 110% DPI, Window narrower than the screen.

    HTML5 videos seem fine.

Edit: I’m trying to watch the Snooker Masters tournament live here and gaaaasp it’s annoying to have these sound issues. (They only have a Flash based video player to watch it)

    • Mike Makarov

Same here Win 8.1×64 also. Also for music files on vk.com.

    • Marcin Mitek

Tracked as DNA-48140, we are aware of it, and yes, it’s annoying. Sorry for inconveniences :(

  • L33t4opera

Hi Aneta, thanks for the nice article, it seems to be quite interesting, and promising build, I appreciate your work 😉

Just in case, that some of the users are interested in new flags, which are added in this version (although not all seem to work as for now):
    – opera:flags#news-stacking-layout
Enable the News stacking layout that produces grid layouts that are easier to read.

    – opera:flags#personalized-news-start-page
News sources are based on browsing history. The feature will only activate once it has detected that the user has sufficient browser history to provide valuable news suggestions.

    – opera:flags#start-page-config
Enables a configuration panel on start page.

    – opera:flags#enable-stale-while-revalidate
Enable the experimental implementation of the "Cache-Control: stale-while-revalidate" directive. This permits servers to specify that some resources may be revalidated in the background to improve latency.

    – opera:flags#force-ui-direction
Explicitly force the UI to left-to-right or right-to-left mode, overriding the default direction of the UI language.

    – opera:flags#enable-md-extensions
If enabled, the chrome://extensions/ URL loads the Material Design extensions page.

    – opera:flags#enable-input-ime-api
Enable the use of chrome.input.ime API.

    gif problem

It stops after second or two and I need to click or scroll mouse wheel to wake it

edit: actually, it looks like it was only in that tab problem (cashed)
If I open it in another tab, animation plays without problems

    • taneli

Didn’t happen here on the gif you just pasted, I did see, however the same thing happen once on another site just an hour ago… gif seemed to have loaded, but it just stopped, started rolling again after i rolled the page up and down a bit.

      • Vux777

yea, something weird is with gifs
if I switch to another tab, scroll page and then back to that gif, chances are (not always) that it will freeze

        • taneli

I didn’t even have to change tabs, now that i tried it again, went to a site that has 5 images per page, when the first .gif came up, it played fine once, then froze up, and only moved frames when i scrolled up and down, after rolling up and down for the duration of the gif, it then again played well after starting again…

Also noticed, that one gif on the site was actually animated, since it was completely frozen the last time i checked it, but now it started moving :p

Thanks for the reports – I can confirm something happens, I just spotted it myself (in my case, I need to have a page with a number of embedded gifs – a standalone animated gif works OK). We’ll investigate.

    • SiMcarD

      Confirmed.

    • Leonardo Gomes

I opened it on a new (private) window and it didn’t even play. Clicking on the page made the frames to change like in a slide show.

However, after have opened a second tab, the gif started to work fine.

  • Ghirahim

    Windows 10 skin looks great!!!

  • Goran

I am at Opera stable on Windows 10. It keeps crashing all the time. In task manager Opera task uses 0% CPU and I must “end task” and start it again (opera stops responding).

    It happens on multiple sites!

I reported this more than month ago. I set crash report mail to “stupar@opera.com”.

    • Leonardo Gomes

And why not place your comment in the post about Opera stable release instead of in one about Opera developer?

  • voyager75000

The toolbar for History, Bookmarks, …. is totally gone for me after the update. Its neither on the bottom like it used to be, nor on the left side like in the news above.

    • Aneta Reluga

Can you please check if the flag #web-ui-navigation-sidepanel is enabled for you? Also, do you have a screenshot? Thanks in advance.

      • voyager75000

Thanks for your fast answer. That flag was indeed disabled for me. I now remember that I switched it off some time ago, because with it, the entire speed dial background has some (imho ugly) overlay.

        Screens:
        http://prntscr.com/9q5yuo
        http://prntscr.com/9q5z3w

        • Aneta Reluga

Thanks for your insights. Although the opinions regarding the new design are varied and a matter of taste, I’m glad that the flag fixed it for you. :)

  • escruting

Will the downloads page be added to the navigation bar? Thanks.

  • Biohazard

    Opera Edge.

    • Kev87

It looks a lot like edge but it looks better imho

    • http://www.youtube.com/user/max1cp?feature=mhum Maxim

It does have many similarities with Edge. But that’s not a bad thing.

  • escruting

Will we be able to adjust the proportions of the speed dial squares? I think these wide/panoramic squares look ugly.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/max1cp?feature=mhum Maxim

LOVE NEW INTERFACE! This is almost perfect. Can’t wait for this to become stable.

  • Der Herr Nick

Extension icons don’t scale well when running Opera with e.g. 170% HiDPI-switch. Looks rather ugly this way.

    • Herr Pietrus

Confirm! Windows 7 with 110% DPI

      • Mikolaj Boc

Sorry we don’t support the ‘non-standard’ DPI settings, that is, we do support only 100, 125, 150, 200 and 250p. All of the other settings will be up- or downscaled to the nearest supported setting.

        • Herr Pietrus

          WHAT?!

Another great solution forced by Windows 10?!..

Oh wait, In Wndows 10 custom DPI can be partially forced, 110% doesn’t work only on Windows 8.

As I understand that ridiculous change was made in the current developer because in the previous build Icons were scaled properly, as well as the interface and websites!

At least it worked well in previous versions (I mean 33 and older)…

Fuck! Why the hell do not these morons from MS understand that people with visual impairments don’t always need huge letters and that it’s not always possible to get proper size combing only four DPI values with standard screen resolutions? With new Windows I had to buy new monitor, or perhaps huge TV to hang it on the wall?! It’s XXI century and UI configuration becomes less and less advanced…

          • Mikolaj Boc

Maybe I didn’t understand fully… @derherrnick:disqus could you please post a screenshot of what is wrong?

          • Aneta Reluga

            DNA-48194

          • Herr Pietrus

I said that, as Der Herr Nick mentioned, extension icons are no longer rescaled according to the system DPI. Then I received a reply that Opera stopped supporting custom DPI values – the same irritating situation we have in Windows 10 in which custom DPI works only in certain places (I mean it worked in beta version – if I’m right) and in Windows 8 in which we can use only 100, 125, 150 etc.

Are you planning something like that? I hope you remember that on Windows 7 custom DPI still works fine and some people still use Windows 7. So I hope that the answer is “no”.

Because I’ve checked that again and I see that on Windows 7 (DPI set to 110%) Opera’s interface is still scaled, as well as the native icons. The only problem I have concerns extension icons.

            http://i.imgur.com/j7TM7hQ.png

          • Aneta Reluga

Yes, the scaling of extensions is already logged.

          • Der Herr Nick

            I think I can 😉

            https://imgur.com/a/aDn9s

        • Herr Pietrus

What’s more I’d like to remind you, that Opera still works on Windows 7 which supports custom DPI!

  • tarkus

I really like browsing with Opera! It has fantastic looks. I finally got rid of the News and I’m eagerly waiting for the downloads page to be part of the Start Page ‘Control Panel’ (as @escruting pointed out). My only serious problem is the missing mouse gestures (bypassed only by programming the mouse buttons) & tab stacking. Great job guys – keep up the good work!

  • Herr Pietrus

No, please, leave the news separate!!!

and there is annoying bug, if we have more tiles start page background changes when we scroll through tiles, it should change only when we reach news section

but to be honest, that background change is ugly and completely useless, because each news has it’s own white background so they can be displayed directly on our theme…

We still can’t change number of the columns for SD elements
I don’t want to zoom out page to see more than four columns!

Is it really so hard to give us na option to set a number of rows and columns?
Pleas, give us such simple and obvious setting!

    • Marc

You can set how many speed dial columns you want to display:
      1. Settings > Advanced settings > enable: “Show advanced settings”
      2. Settings > Start page > Maximum number of columns:

      • Herr Pietrus

Yes, but it is the MAXIMUM number, so if you have smaller resolution or narrower browser window or DPI higher than standard 100% you still can’t have as many columns as you want until you change resolution, window width, zoom level or DPI.

    • BK

have you been using news so far?

      • Herr Pietrus

        Yes, I’ve been using them.
But on the separate page they worked better. I could browse one category at a time. I could switch to another one without opening hidden menus. In Opera for Android it works as it used to work on PC.and that’s good.

      • Gloriam

I also use news a lot, but I really want it on a separate page.

  • Herr Pietrus

Oh no, what have you done! Smart RSS Extension doesn’t work any more!

    :(

    • xirit64

What’s your OS? It’s working fine here W7/64.

      • Herr Pietrus

        The same – W7 x64.
I’ve tried to reinstall it and now the installation can’t be finished… I’ll try on a clean profile, but I’ve seen in comments on the extension site, that also on version 33 it doesn’t work well…

Perhaps it’s nothing strange, last update was made in 2014…

It would be the most wonderful thing if Opera added that marvelous extension to the browser. It’s sad, but now they are not capable of creating such a great tool…

        :(

      • Herr Pietrus

I’ve tried with the clean install – clean profile… Still doesn’t work..
To be honest I suppose that it didn’t work also in previous build/previous version…

Damn, that’s a really good reason to stay with Opera 28… :(

        • xirit64

Strange, in my case as you probably may remember, I installed the first O36 developer version, (36.0.2072.0) then installed both RSS extensions, then imported everything from an exported file of O34. You may try that build first. I installed first Smart RSS then the RSS Detector if that somehow plays any role.

          • Herr Pietrus

And after the update to the newest developer Smart RSS still works?
BTW – it worked also for me on the first dev build, but I had a problem with resizing Smart RSS panels…

          • xirit64

yes still works without any problems :/

  • Kev87

The new speed dial design is awesome, but can you please make the internal pages load faster (slow speed, and white blinking when switching through them). I’ve made a video to demonstrate it: https://www.dropbox.com/s/2bgt1e5v44htwz4/2016-01-14-0030-53.mp4?dl=0 It’s very annoying and it’s not the case that I am using an old pc.

    • littledoremi

This really needs to be fixed. The flickering is really annyoing.

    • BK

      white blinking – in progress – DNA-42333.

  • beBoss

    – opera:flags#enable-md-extensions
If enabled, the chrome://extensions/ URL loads the Material Design extensions page.

Can’t see any difference? Where to check for this flag, in the extensions page?

    • Leonardo Gomes

It’s probably a Chromium flag and may not affect Opera.

      • Mikolaj Boc

Yes. We should probably hide it though.

  • Sidney Moraes

News configuration are not being shown on that bar for me.

    • Leonardo Gomes

Read the known issues. You need to enable the flag #personalized-news-start-page

      • Sidney Moraes

        Thank you :)

Why my Opera can’t update? My Opera version it: 34.0.2036.31
And still is show: You have a latest Opera version. And the current version it: 34.0.2036.47

    • Mikolaj Boc

Well, that’d be the current stable version. This here is about Developer.

    • Mikolaj Boc

And you probably have to download stable yourself because more often than not we’re conducting gradual updates.

      • AS

If I’ll download Opera and install it anew then I’ll lose all added tabs. And I want to update this software, always show me a update of Opera now it doesn’t working! Otherwise at my friend the update of Opera was show, so why at me not? Something can locking the Opera update? In CCleaner program in tab scheduled update I’ve on Opera scheduled Autoupdate service, so why program can’t be update?

        • Aneta Reluga

Frankly, I’ve never seen such Opera behavior. But I’ll try to help.
          Can you please:
          1) make a backup of your profile folder (it can be shown in opera:about under the Paths section)
          2) update manually to the newest version
          3) close Opera
          4) clean your Temp folders
          5) copy back your backup to the profile location and restart Opera?
Alternatively, if it does not work: please uninstall Opera completely, clear your Opera and Temp folders, install the fresh version, close Opera, copy your backup profile to your profile folder and start Opera again. I hope this works for you.

          • AS

Aneta I did it as you wrote me, I updated Opera by downloaded newest version, I clicked in update and now I’ve newest version 34.0.2036.47, of course I did a copy of Opera Software from AppData/Roaming folder but after update of Opera all added tabs are on their place, so I didn’t paste Opera Software folder back to AppData, cause it isn’t necessarily? I hope that if the newest version of Opera will be release then the program will be update automatically.

  • Marc

The new interface looks great. The only thing I don’t like is how close the speed dials stick to the top when having the search box disabled. Also maybe space them out a little more? They look so squished together (especially when you have a lot of space on a larger screen).

An option to display news from sites we visited AND from other sources at the same time would be handy in my opinion. And the news as a separate page would be nice, too.
Also, tab stacking, please! That was the best way to organize tabs that belong together.

  • Matej Szendi

What is status of video theme CPU optimization? CPU usage is in my case constantly about 2-3%, even if the video theme does not appear in any tab.

  • passie

Anybody else has the problem with video’s on this site?

    http://tweakers.net/video/11265/microsoft-zet-code-chakracore-online.html

there is an crack in the audio. Chrome works fine. Watching youtube works fine as well.

  • ChiHeng Lan

Some noise occurs when watching flash videos. Is there anyone have the same trouble with this version?

    • Marcin Mitek

We are aware of this issue, it’s tracked as DNA-48140.

  • Gloriam

I really like the new Windows 10 interface, but the start page needs an option to:

    – Turn off all the elements except for the speed dial features, but instead put the news back on the side as a button.

I really like the news feature Opera has, but I don’t want it in my speed dial, that stuff needs to be separate!

I do like you got rid of the wasted space by having an option to remove the search bar above (and unlike the konami code trick, it actually gets rid of the wasted space :D)

    • Herr Pietrus

Of course it needs to be separate… Especially that it was more handy in that state.

  • Emanuele

    Hi

just for curiosity: is the Windows 10 version a “modern app” or simply a normal program with just a different GUI?

    • Tommy Wille

      Just a UI redesign.

  • Eurock

Where’s GisMeteo extension on the screenshot??)))

  • Vux777

    how does opera://flags/#personalized-news-start-page works?

    – browser sends user history to Opera server
    – server decide what to push in user news by keywords
    ?!?

if that’s the case, you could be flamed for serious privacy issues

    • BK

Browser does not send the data to the server. Server sends all data always, filtering happens locally on the client.

      • Vux777

        ty

  • Vux777

btw. you could fix relaunch action (from flags etc)
other browsers brings back opened tabs after relaunch event, only Opera starts with fresh

    • Kev87

That’s a good idea and something I also want to see in Opera! Especially when you are trying out some flags and new things, that would be much more easier and comfortable.

    • BK

      Minor use case, rather not.

      • Nekomajin43

It could be done with a proper session manager…

  • led9ru

    1. The image in the background of the start page looks obscured, dim, but as usual was bright.

    2. White panel at the “search box in the address bar” in start page would like to have more transparent (as before)

Finally, you make a version that really well, thank you for it!
(and that the sync icon can be turned off – thank you for that, too :))

    • Kev87

How can you turn the sync icon off?

      • led9ru

        opera://flags
“Hide sync login button” = “on”

        • Kev87

          thanks!

  • Kev87

      • Kev87

Strange, also W10 x64 here. But sometimes it happens, and sometimes not.

        • Vux777

maybe some flags combo is doing that

          • Kev87

I’ve tested it for a bit now and with default (no extra flags at all) it happens. Also when the windows 10 theme flag enabled it happens again.

  • Octavio Rios

You guys are just ONE STEP away from having a perfectly beautiful interface: just change the damn folder icon in the bookmarks bar. Seriously guys, it doesn’t fit the style of the browser at all, it’s like a 3d model icon taken from the default windows XP OS. Please, just change that folders icon and you will have by far the most beautiful interface in any current browser. Congrats on the changes though, they are great!

    • BK

Yeah, maybe it could be the same icon as in the quick download menu and bookmarks manager. We will look into this. Thanks!

      • Tommy Wille

Definitely a good idea, Błażej. :-)

      • Octavio Rios

Exactly, something that seems more “flat”. Thanks for noticing.

      • Herr Pietrus

There is nothing too look into, just do it, :)

        • BK

          Ok then, DNA-48322

    • Cryio

If Opera polishes the UI, the most beautiful browsers on Windows 10 will be, in this order:

      Opera
      Firefox
      Edge
      Chrome

    • Herr Pietrus

Hard to say how many times I’ve wrote about that although I don’t use bookmarks bar…

  • http://genius-lab.org/ Serghei Bulah

On new Win 10 theme the fav icon on tab turns black (sometimes black square appears instead of the icon) when closing the tab.

    • Mikolaj Boc

      Nice catch. Thanks.

      • http://genius-lab.org/ Serghei Bulah

You are welcome. I’ve been using new Opera for few days now and I’ve noticed that tabs on new theme seem to be more laggy when animating (especially close). Maybe I am wrong and just got used to the native theme. Can’t say for sure.

After how many icons, the expander appears? I wish I could make all icons disappear – in other ways the expander to be activated after a number of icons set by me.

    • Aneta Reluga

Currently it is the percentage of space taken, approximately up to 1/3 and then the expander appears. Thanks for your suggestion.

  • Cockie Sunburn

I’m very glad this means that I can finally turn News off completely! There are so many news aggregators (Digg being the best, imo), that having a separate Opera newsfeed is somewhat useless.

An option to integrate RSS feeds would make the function better, and extremely customisable. Another idea: add the ability to select certain external news aggregators, and perhaps even turn off Opera’s own posts.

With options like that the new tab page would finally become useful! A personal news inbox of sorts. I’m sure many Opera fans would love it.

    • Nachiketa Ramesh

Yeah RSS support for news is genius. I would totally dump feedly.

  • bwat47

In some online music players, music comes out distorted (like scratches etc.) when using O developer – doesn’t happen when the same players are playing in O stable (for example samples in Amazon – https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B012JWGPN2?ie=UTF8&redirect=true&ref_=s9_simh_bw_p340_d10_i1)

    • Misiek Pysiek

      I confirm, sound scratches.

    • Tommy Wille

It’s been mentioned earlier, so it’s a known issue.

  • http://andreas8.wordpress.com/ Andreas

Lovely! Well done on really integrating touch in to opera this time. Very nice and very well done! However… I still wish it was still possible to make small icons of the pages you bookmark on the speed dial. If I have two amazon-bookmarks in the speed dial, they both look the same. Back when it was possible to make small icons of the page it self it was easy to see which page was a bookmark of a certain book on amazon and which bookmark was a book mark to the front page of amazon. I really really want this feature back!

    • Vux777

      TL:DR
      gif

you can choose thumbnail for any bookmark, including speed dial, in the time of creation or later if you visit that page
only problem, if you have duplicate bookmarks (eg on speed dial and somewhere else), not sure for which one Opera will make thumbnail… probably first created.
Devs should take care of that situation with some simple choice or making speed dial bookmarks priority.
-while creating, you can zoom thumbnails with mouse wheel, or pan with left mouse button

  • Vux777

    history is still bugged
scrolling trough all history, days showing up randomly

  • Юлия

While that looks pretty (I like the thin buttons and the Opera Menu button) will you make a mouse friendly version? I mean the looks of that with the spacing/padding and font size of the current one. I don’t have windows 10 to try it, but from screenshots it doesn’t look too usable with a mouse.

Why can’t I trigger the autoscroll in Disqus area? It works with Firefox and IE, but not with the new Opera or Chrome. It’s been like this forever but still. I always have to move the mouse pointer on the side.

  • Taras Chornyi

New version looks very well but I very often have problem on many sites with error “ERR_SPDY_PROTOCOL_ERROR” (mostly on vk.com, wikipedia and facebook). For example http://prntscr.com/9qxfms

  • pisarz1958

Any chance that these improvements for touch support would be available on 8.1 as well?

    • Mikolaj Boc

Hi! We can enable the bigger context menus without a problem, although there’s no tablet mode under Windows 8, so the fullscreen button just won’t work there.

      • pisarz1958

        That would be great.

  • Nachiketa Ramesh

The new Windows 10 theme is awesome and this is quickly becoming the best Windows 10 browser hands down. It looks really really good.

A few criticisms and suggestions of the Windows 10 theme:
->Since the Opera Icon is the full circle, it doesn’t look good with the tiny left padding you have given it. If you gave it more like you have on the right side, it would.
->The lines between inactive tabs does not look good and I hate that firefox does this. IMO, if the outline was a full line both on the sides of the open tabs and the top, instead of just the sides it would look great. Alternatively if you set the hover color as the inactive tab color, that would work really well too.
->The Google bar on the Speed Dial and the customize start page look out of place with this theme. All you need to do is remove the curved corners for rectangularish corners for the search box and the border box and make the Customize start page opaque and make the border maybe a line instead and it would look great.
->Also the shadows around everything on the speed dial and the customize speed dial page don’t make sense with this theme at all.
-> For the sake of consistency, making the speed dial icons the outline ones like you have done elsewhere in the UI for bookmarks, speed dial and such would be awesome and look great.
->The tab switcher button looks weird and out of place. I suspect its something to do with the padding, but I cant put my finger on it.
->The tab switcher and menu buttons look out of place in full screen, especially since the menu button has lost its border.
->The dark grey theme in private mode should have white buttons for close, maximize, minimize, the opera button and the tab switcher when Windows color is turned off and when inactive.
->Inactive Windows when Window Color is turned off should go to a darker shade, not back to grey or like most Modern UI Windows 10 apps, just the buttons should go to a darker shade.
-> I can’t customize my news sources like in your screenshot for some reason.

And for using this theme as a touch UI:
->Putting the Opera Menu button in the bar alongside the tabs or on the same bar as search and sync like in edge but on the left and collapsing the two regions rather like Edge will allow you to make both the Menu button, Sync button and the tabs bigger and easier for touch.
-> Making the Speed Dial icons larger would really really help.

Agree with most of the suggestions.

    • Mikolaj Boc

Thanks for taking your time to write down these suggestions. We will evaluate them and you will probably see some changes in the next build.

An option to adjust the length of the separate search bar would also be nice. (a slider when hovering the little space between the adress bar and the search bar for example like in firefox)

Can’t watch facebook videos. Lags, the picture is awful and sometimes shows green screen. And it’s Opera problem for sure! Windows 10 x64 11099

How can I enable the Windows 10 theme on Windows 7? Love the way it looks and my touch laptop is down at the moment…
Even if its just to get the icons and new opera menu button.

    • Tommy Wille

      Not possible at this moment.

      • Noël K

        ): Okay.

  • Michael Maier

Newest version looks pretty so far, but it’s a bit laggy.
I don’t know if that’s the reason but when I open Opera’s Task Manager I see a Speeddial task, although no Speeddial tab exists.
It took constantly about 15 to 25 % of CPU. I can kill the process and Opera seems to perform better. But whenever I open Speeddial and close it this entry persists.

I know this screenshot is probably useless because I have no idea how to reproduce this bug, but sometimes elements are missing from speed dial, reopening the tab fixes the issue.
